I bought my 2004 Z06 because it only came with a manual transmission. The power is addictive! I did not buy it for cargo room. It's a sports car meant to be driven! Can't beat a Z06 The power is insane!
@@4KMotoring harshness? Really I don't experience that when driving. It drives like a sports car! Oh the thrill of feeling the tires hugging the pavement! What I do not understand why are you even bothering to bash a Z06 all corvettes are awesome in my opinion.
I hope you don't misunderstand, there is no bashing here, just noting that there is a clear distinction between the two models of car and one is not inherently better than the other. Other. They both have their pluses and minuses. Many look for the C5 Z06 because they discount the coup without noting that there are objective changes that make it a different vehicle
You do know that the coupes came with manual transmissions as well right 😂 and the z06 is only about 50 hp more than the coupe, just toss some headers and intake and the coupe will be near that range as well, will save you a couple of racks if your only buying the z06 for the power and not to mention the car sounding more aggressive…
As a proud owner of an 04 Z06, I tend to disagree with some of what you said, not all. The storage on it is quite more than you think. The Z06 does not have the cover for the storage bins in the back so those can be filled with groceries and smaller items which keeps things from rolling around in the back. As far as not a great touring car, I have taken mine from here just outside of Raleigh down to Southpoint to Myrtle Beach and to Mechanicsville to Zip Corvette for their customer appreciation day. It has also been up through Mount Airy up into Virginia in the mountains. The wife and I enjoy the comfort and feeling of safety if gives you. All of these trips I averaged 29-30 MPG. The C5 is an amazing car no matter which version you have. Is one better than the other?? That is the opinion of the driver. To say one is better than the other is setting you up for a flaming that may not be deserved. Keep of the great job you are doing with the channel!! Would love to get together one weekend with more Corvettes and all go for a drive and enjoy the cars.
Lol this guy isn't a car guy. Want storage? Get a storage unit, not a trunk. No one buys a z06 to compromise no matter what year. If your any kind of proud owner, your just feel blessed to own a vette. No one said anything is wrong with a coupe. When you spend the "extra" money on a z06 means you can sale the parts for a higher price than the coupe. No one buys the exhaust on a coupe. No one buys the heads, etc. This guy is trying to justify so hard. I love all vettes and I won't say this is why this is better. A vette is a vette. Feel blessed to have one No matter what
I owned a 98 C5 and now have a 2003 Z06. I have daily drove both except during winter and hands down I like the Z06 better. The power difference is night and day also the Z06 drove much nicer then I expected. The base coupe is a great car however and I loved it as well.
Your video did a great job of highlighting the features of the C5 coupe. I've owned mine for 10 years and have found it to be exciting, practical and economical. It checks all the hobby car boxes and doesn't break the bank. By investing in a few DIY modifications and bolt-ons you can make it a unique expression of your sports car dreams. I love my C5 coupe!!
Men are never satisfied with whatever they drive unless they figure out how to make it go faster and sound louder. The C-5 Corvette coup is an extraordinary car. The Z06 is faster. The coup is a beautiful car. The Z06 is also. Both will give you a sense of empowerment. The coup cost less than the Z06. The coup is a Corvette, so is the Z06. Did I mention they both look great in your driveway? Enjoy the journey.
picked up my 03 Z from Peoria, AZ. From there to my house 30-31 mpg's highway. Yes you can get 30mpgs. Neither car will get that city so not a discussion. Also its not about power it feels more nimble, has more power yea but lower rpm's it still feels faster, car has better braking and extra braking no matter the circumstances is always welcomed. I sold these cars and driven many. The car also rode great I daily drive my Z 1:45 each way in stop and go traffic most of the way. Z06 by far is a better car then the regular vette without a doubt. So if you cant pay that extra money which what it comes down to then a ls1 is still a great option. This is experience and I've owned LS1, LS6 and LT1 cars and C5 Z's are just incredible to drive weekends or daily.
I’m a c6 guy. But for the c5 I always liked the hatch better than the z96/frc. I still like both but I like the hatch and the targa better as far as looks.
My Corvette is a daily driver. Day in day out. I selected my mods very carefully. Brakes and improve breathing. I don't want all that noise . Car is already fast enough for me and I don't loose the comfort of a daily driver.
Best compromise for all of this is the C6 Grand Sport. I had a C6 Z06 and with the valve and rod issues, there was a certain pucker feeling every time I drove it. For C5’s though, I think the Z06 has magic being the halo car of the 5th gen.
Z06 all the way, I don't think I could own a base model because I would push it beyond it's limits. I'm more performance oriented, Z06 is a daily driver as much as a base model, I think it's actually safer because it handles better, brakes sooner and a little lighter. Both great cars obviously
Agreed, most ppl who buy the Z06 could care less about milage which isn't true in c5&c6. Nor is the drivetrain weaker. This os a base model video looking for content.
I agree with you completely. Just bought a C5 base model, stayed away from Z06 because it seems difficult to find any that haven't been ran hard or tracked. The 50hp difference isn't worth price difference either, in my opinion. Put a Vararam and long tube headers on base model and base model and it's just as much horsepower as a Z06, in a more comfortable car.
Oh, you like what you have. Hard to believe. LOL I've had a base c5 and I now have a 2004 Z06. It's not even close. The Z06 is not a race car, it's a very compliant performance car.
There's actually not a lot of "beefing up", the 2001+ Corvettes all get the stronger torque tube and engine mounts. If anything, the lightweight glass is a bit more fragile. All around these cars are holding up well for their age!
I saw the view of your engine bay and do you have a foam gasket at the body lip where the leading edge of the hood comes down? If not, rain and wash water can run in and soak your air filter, fyi. 😬

It would be interesting to know what C5 buyers of pre-owned cars were looking for when they made their purchase. In my case, the most important factor was it had to be a convertible. (OK, it was my spouse’s most important factor)! I’m quite sure potential buyer’s are specifically looking for Z06’s. But to your point, I’m not quite sure, cost down the road, cargo space and tracking the car etc. come into play when the time comes to buy. Nevertheless, you made some good points. Thanks.
Here's my question. For the cost, couldn't you upgrade a coupe with the components of a Z06 (besides the thinner glass) and get practically the same car?
@@4KMotoring Right, but even then the transmission can be changed too. Personally, I love the look of the coupe more than an FRC and I'm surprised I don't see more modded with Z0-6 like components.
It's all good brotha! You like the coup, I like the z06. The convertible would be pretty nice too. But not even I can say which style car is best. To whoever is in the market, go to car meets, look at the cars up close. Watch more videos. See which c5 is more your style 🤷♂️
I don’t think you really understand the difference. It appears you are justifying your coupe. I do get 29-31 mpg on highway driving in my Z06. It also looks so much better than the coupe. The power is stronger with the Z06, which I love! The handling is better than the coupe, as well as braking. I love the six speed. For the life of me I can’t understand why someone would own any sports car without a manual transmission.
The Coupe has a 6-speed manual as well. Looks are without a doubt subjective, but the differences in handling aren't significant. The Z06 came with slightly heavier leaf springs and sway bars, but has the exact same brakes (painted red). The Z06 has the same engine (with different heads), torque tube, and transmission. It just has less cargo space and thinner glass than the coupe. For the difference in cost between the two, a couple is just a better deal
Z06 is a better car all around. You can think your base model is better all you like, it's not. A z06 will always bring a higher resale value, so that negates the initial price increase on purchase. Everyone knows a guy that buys the base/cheapest option available, then will try and justify to you that it's better than the more expensive, top of the line model
Fact is, the Z06 is a better race car, but a worse GT car. There are plenty of reason the Z06 is a better car for some, but the base couple also has superior features for some purposes. Listing reasons the base is better than the Z06 isn't a full stop declaration
@@4KMotoring fact is, you sound unintelligent in the video, and in your comment. What gets me is all of these guys with these newer cars? All they wanna do is brag about the horsepower they have. So what are you gonna do with 1000 hp on the street? I could see having 500 -600 hp on the street but still where are you ever going to be able to use it.At 69 years old 350 hp in the C5 Corvette is plenty for me. I am not street racing or I don’t need to brag about high horsepower, etc. I really enjoy driving it and I do like getting on it once in a while.👍
I owned both models and I can say from experience the z06 is way better in every way looks and performance you talk about better gas and more room for you groceries lol well buy a van anyone that has the money and opportunity to test drive both I bet you that at least 90% will choose a z06 good day nice video tho
Not to mention torque Converter are different if u are planning on throwing a stage 3 cam like myself I have to get a 3000 and over torque converter which I have to get mines is automatic I guess the zo6 version of the car manual has the right torque converter just to throw a bigger cam stage 2 I wouldn't have to do a torque Converter
I've had a 2001 Millennium Yellow C5 (Base) Corvette for many years and with each passing year I love it more and more! I took it to the track once in all of the years that I've owned it. While at the track I took on two ZO6's and one Mustang GT. Beat all three by almost three seconds each. All I had done was an aftermarket dual air intake, Borla Stinger Exhaust and a $200 Dyno-Tune. I am extremely happy with my Coupe! I wouldn't modify anything else on it and I definitely don't race it on the track, except for that one day... So, is my Coupe better than a ZO6...that would be a BIG YES from me... Stay safe... Rico
I am so confused lol. Aren’t the models the stingray, grand sport, or z06 and not coupe. Also the trunk space and set up for the C8 corvette stingray and z06 are pretty much identical and both have different drive modes like tour mode which makes the steering and suspension softer and I’m pretty sure the gas mileage is similar as well. As far as for the c5 corvettes it’s only a 3 mpg difference for highway between models. The parts will most likely wear the same for the C8 cars too because the models are very similar to each other, so besides pricing I just don’t think there’s that many cons with getting the Z06.
It definitely changes between generations. The c5 is the only one with a different body configuration (hatch vs FRC), the c6 and up keeps the same trunk configuration. The suspension does get noticably harsher, but the Z51 package can bring the gateway ride to the coupe as well. The fuel economy is different between generations as well, but the Z06 is always lower. Z06 has different clutches, brakes, etc that are designed to be more performance oriented, but definitely cost more to replace and wear out faster. Many came with more lightweight glass so there is less noise insulation. Combined with the initial purchase price being higher, you're getting a car today is better on the track then it is on a road trip
I am very happy that you are a corvette owner. But most corvette owners are car guys. I believe you just enjoy your great mileage, Sears on sale tires and I am almost positive you use Armorall to shine your car. You know the old saying” If I have to explain”. Enjoy your corvette.
Yes, I want the slower pundy version. Said no one ever. My God what is wrong with people these days??? Don't drink the water wherever this guy is from.😅😅😂😂😂
@@4KMotoring you're the only one slower. 4.1 0-60 vs. 4.9. 0-60. But I would expect nothing less from a Multi Strada rider. Because you're AWESOME. LOL
Neither the C5 coupe, FRC or Z06 are fast by today's performance standards. So if you want to go fast either varient is going to need mods. So if you are into modifying your cars for performance the biggest question to ask yourself between the two is...do I want to build a fast car with a removable top or not?
@Matt Brad it’s all relative to what’s considered fast for some people. Those cars you listed with the exception of the Hellcat are all pretty slow in my and my friends opinions. New M3’s, M5’s, C6 ZO6, C7 Z06, C6/C7 ZR1s, ZL1s, GT500’s, E63’s, GTR’s…all 11.5 second or less 1/4 times. In stock form. And that’s just a short list. Some with just a tune have even more to gain. That’s a full second or more faster than a stock C5 Z06 in the 1/4. One second might as well be a lifetime in a 1320 race. I had a low 11 second C5 since 2007. I had to procharge it (634whp/568wtq) just to keep up with my friends.
@Matt Brad the only car you called out is the M3 and the 2030 M3 runs an 11.6 out of the box. I’ve seen plenty more guys running 12s in their C5 Z06’s than I have breaking 11s. Especially in bone stock form on a radial street tire. Hell the Z06 Quick List on Corvette Forum also confirms the same. I’m confident my car is a mid 10 second car with the new power. It ran 11.2 before the boost. This Spring I’ll find out for sure. Again, mid 11s is nothing to right home about. Edit: cars coming out of the factories today are coming with forced induction and are much faster cars. That’s the new standard. It is what it is.
@Matt Brad no doubt it’s the best bang for the buck performance car anyone can purchase. It’s a ridiculously solid foundation for building big power and the price cannot be beat. I’ve owned 3 C5s and still have the one I bought brand new for my 25th birthday. That’s the one that keeps getting built, broken and built better. The benefit to the C5 over the other NA V8s is the weight advantage. Those other cars are loaded with nanny tech, creature comfort’s, safety equipment and refinement. They are simply too fat. I was very happy with a forged big cam and heads setup until I wasn’t. Too many cars today are coming out of the factory with the ability to run low 11s and high tens with limited to no modifications outside of a tune. It was either put up or shut up and live with the fact that my beloved 11 second car was like having a land line and every punk ass and their brother is showing up with an IPhone. So I forged it and procharged it for less than what another motorcycle would cost me. Never mind another Vette.

Just say you wanted the z06 bro lol
Not in the C5 generation! I wouldn't say no to a C6Z though....
I agree. There is so much more to a z06 than he mentioned and so there will always be.
To the best of my knowledge, the Z06 was only available as a manual, it never had a torque converter
@@4KMotoring correct. Torque converters are only applicable to automatics.
The C5 Z06 01-04 and the 99-00 FRC variants only came in manual.
Rico
What type of track were you on? Sounds like you did real well!
You beat the driver, not the car
Beat them by 3 seconds? Lol...so you must have been in the high 9's with an intake and exhaust? That's amazing 🙄
Combined with the initial purchase price being higher, you're getting a car today is better on the track then it is on a road trip
i have an ls1 frc thats what i like best of both worlds
Quite the interesting car!
Wished they never screw up the roof on the C5 z06 😂
What spoiler is that? I dig it

I am very happy that you are a corvette owner. But most corvette owners are car guys. I believe you just enjoy your great mileage, Sears on sale tires and I am almost positive you use Armorall to shine your car. You know the old saying” If I have to explain”. Enjoy your corvette.
i like to go fast so the z06 is better for me for sure i cant do no base model lol i need superior performance
The base has a higher top speed
I have a 01 conv that's been 6.0 swapped. It's a fukn monster
I can only imagine! I recently saw an LSU swapped 02 Vette for sale, I instantly wanted it!
LOVE my coupe :D Z06 also sick but LOVE my coupe!
Yes, I want the slower pundy version. Said no one ever. My God what is wrong with people these days??? Don't drink the water wherever this guy is from.😅😅😂😂😂
The slower one with the higher top speed... Right...
@@4KMotoring you're the only one slower. 4.1 0-60 vs. 4.9. 0-60. But I would expect nothing less from a Multi Strada rider. Because you're AWESOME. LOL
175 mph top speed is not available with the Z06
@@4KMotoring I didn't buy it to go 175 m.p.h. I bought it for road racing. For which it's the perfect weapon.
03 z06 405HP,
Yeah right
Change out your DRL's cheap upgrade and a awesome better look! ijs
I have them in the garage, waiting on the knightdriveTV headlights to arrive for a full install
Neither the C5 coupe, FRC or Z06 are fast by today's performance standards. So if you want to go fast either varient is going to need mods.
So if you are into modifying your cars for performance the biggest question to ask yourself between the two is...do I want to build a fast car with a removable top or not?
Very well said
@Matt Brad it’s all relative to what’s considered fast for some people.
I would rather drive a corolla than own a c5 without the targa top, that's half the point of owning one
No subscriber here. Don’t agree with any of your assessments. 👎
Clearly you agree with it being a controversial topic!
Lol I don't hate on the guy but he's wrong the c5 base is a good budget car I hade one 6spd low miles sold it couldn't fall in love with the hatchback. Bought a z06 in person its just a nicer looking car. The upgrades the z has as well are worth it.
not even gonna watch this because its what every base owner says HAHA
All coming from a base model owner. 🫨The thrill of the Z06 performance is worth the down sides!
