  • C5 Corvette long term ownership review. Let's talk about the good, the bad, and everything in between on what it's been like to own my 2002 C5 Corvette. I've had this car for a few years and I have to say, it's been one of my most enjoyable cars I've ever owned. Not the fastest, most expensive, or flashiest car, but that's what has made it the most fun to drive and own.
    I've made quite a few modifications to my C5 over the past few years, mostly set up for HPDE track days, so let's go over them and see how they turned out!

    Have a C5 Corvette
    Problems.....
    Ignition lock problem. Fixed with a bypass wire kit.
    Seats are horrible. poorly made, mechanicals/ electronics break constantly. Removed them and put in racing seats.
    Gas gauge issue. replaced sending unit in tank. still messes up occasionally. Reset on dash.
    Interior parts are poorly designed and made. Had to fix multiple problems including center storage latch.
    Stock radio sucks. Replaced with double din unit.
    HVAC system has dim lights. Had to re-soder LED leads.
    Charging system is very sensitive about what battery and alternator you use. Will also throw all kinds of codes if voltage is low.
    Harmonic balancer wears out and is very hard to remove. Have to lower the front subframe and remove steering rack to access the bolt.
    Upgraded all lights with LED as the lights are dim especially the headlights.
    Headlight motors use a plastic gear that wears out . Replace with brass.

      Well there are always Toyota pick up trucks. the corvettes were designed to be assembled quickly on an assembly line, not for ease of service. In GM's world the target customer just buys a new car before fixing a bunch of stuff.

    Charlie, I have an 09 base Corvette. I undersand why you sold the car and I'll probably learn a lot from your videos featuring the Porsche. I put the same wheels on it that you have; square setup; 200 treadwear tires. I went with Wilwood big brakes on the front and my car is a delight on the track (props to spec corvette). Same idea; modify it to a more track focused car but leave some canyon runs and sun runs in it. I can take my roof off like yours. My thought on this is that the amount of money I've spent, owning the car for 15 years, is so small compared to any Porsche owner, I don't know how you can really say anything other than Thankyou to GM for making this car. True, harmonic balancers and torque tubes are a problem with this car. Interiors are parts bin/cheap/tick tac box quality. But they're light and light means a lot in the sports car world. Great videos. To all of your viewers, if you want an awesome life changing experience, buy a Corvette!

    Money is the MAIN reason why ppl get the base. The list of reasons ppl say why they got a base is just to make them feel good about their purchase. I could’ve got a base and glad I didn’t because I’m sure I would’ve sold it. My C5Z is staying forever

    • @charliemanger
      @charliemanger  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess that makes sense. But why buy ANY C5 at all? A C5Z is still a cheap $20-30k car. Does that mean you only bought a C5 because you couldn’t afford a C6/C7/C8? Don’t be too quick to judge other people with a “lesser” trim car. I’d rather see someone driving a base C5 than a Prius!

    • @isiahgomez6860

      @@charliemanger I bought a C5Z because I wanted a C5Z looks alone made me love it, transmission gearing, free floating piston pins, LS6 block is stronger, a trunk. It was my 1st dream car so I got it. I like certain cars and trim models and get them when opportunity presents itself instead of settling. LT engines don’t do it for me. I race, so it’s a hard pass on anything with a LT engine. Learned my lesson getting cars I actually didn’t want. To me it’s like dating a chick you don’t see yourself with for long

    • @charliemanger
      @charliemanger  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      C6's don't have LTs. Also, dry-sump (important if you actually track the car), MUCH better brakes (again, if you actually track the car = big deal), mag-ride shocks (again, track = big deal). Even the "base" LS3 in C6's is a much improved design over an LS6. I only mention that stuff to re-phrase your first comment:
      "Money is the MAIN reason why ppl get the C5. The list of reasons ppl say why they got a C5 is just to make them feel good about their purchase."
      Having a pretentious attitude over people because you have a higher trim level (still cheap car though) is a sad way to be a car enthusiast.

I actually race and modify these specific cars all day everyday man and the hype on LS3’s are 🥱 just sluggish with ass gearing. Dry sump another 🥱 plenty cars racing without it. I got no problem with stopping with EBC brake pads and a good rotor. I’ve raced against modded base C5’s and LS3’s neither are competition because the transmission gearing on those cars is garbage plus base c5’s made before 2001 got weaker diffs. You know what you owned and barely even that from your video” still a cheap car” but list reason why you had got the cheaper version of it man stfu 😂 ya prolly got the 718 because the 911 honestly out of reach but let you tell it

    My pleasure is driving a convertible with the top down on a pleasant day with good company, with speed secondary to just driving a competent car. I feel a convertible is the ultimate expression of any pleasure car, especially the corvette, unless you need to speed.
    one advantage the C5 has is that the forgiving handling makes it easier to drive fast compared to the faster C6 and later models, with the C5 convertible having the most interior room of any corvette so far.
    the key to old cars is picking a platform you don't mind supporting with money, because although the cars value will continually depreciate with age, the maintenance requirements of a high line car never will.
    I've owned a few ' classic" sports cars and was temped to go to the top of that mountain and get a Porsche. I decided to cheap out and get a C5, because ultimately cars don't mean that much to me, and I didn't want to pay for those fine imported German parts . plus if out on a Road trip in America, Gm parts are easy to obtain, if you can find someone who won't screw up the car.
