from a teenager to a senior citizen, Rush has been such a musical inspiration to me. They are great ambassadors of music, living righteous, and grounded lifestyles, and lifelong relationships. They lived to play music. That's all they ever wanted to do. And we got to enjoy their journey over the years. There is plenty of room for more Rush fans.

What you're hearing at the end of the guitar solo is a delay pedal set to "repeat and hold". He plays the same note several times and hits the effect, and it will loop the section while he starts playing the next section. Then he turns it off at the appropriate time. One thing that is REALLY missed in this age of digital music is the placement of Limelight right after YYZ on the album. They fit together so well. It's almost disconcerting to hear one without the other.
My Neil Peart story (bear with me): I'm rather introverted myself and this song really hits me hard. During the "dark days" of RUSH when Neil was traveling North America after the loss of his wife and daughter, I noticed him at a convenience store in southern Utah. Knowing that he cherished his privacy, I really wanted to let him know I recognized him without bothering him. I was almost in a panic to think of a way to acknowledge him discretely. His hands full, he turned to push the door as he backed out of the store and I couldn't help it - I "air drummed" a tom riff as he glanced my way. He paused for just an instant, raised the paper cup in his hand and disappeared out the door. I like to believe that he recognized the gesture for what it was - a fan respecting his space.

All the World is a Stage is from Shakespeare, Neil was a heavy reader and used many well noted historical quotes by changing a word or two. Take the lyrics from Red Tide, Let us not go gently
    To the endless winter night.
I'm pretty sure that came from, Do not go gentle into that good night
A poem by Dylan Thomas. (An excellent read about his father dying)!
In Suburbs he wrote; Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Could very well be a rewrite of Henry David Thoreau in Walden, he wrote; The mass of men lead quiet lives of desperation.
I could go on and on with these but you might get bored. Neil was a wordsmith. Always had things to say and spoke fast because of it. The key was making him feel comfortable to open up and discuss what was racing around in his head. He worked auto parts at his dads store. Its probly where the song Red Barchetta comes from. The thoughts racing and his love of cars. I absolutely love the line, mecanical music. Definitely some of his best lyrics were used on Moving Pictures. What a stunningly Perfict album!!
BTW; Alex's solo in this song always reminds me of Finding Nemo when Dora is speaking whale! 😂😂😂

Neil paid tribute, you may have noticed, to William Shakespeare in that song. "All the world's indeed a stage, and we are merely players", from "As You Like It". Here's the first line of this speech: "All the world’s a stage,
    And all the men and women merely players;
    They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
    His acts being seven ages."
I'm so glad you are enjoying your new Rush fandom! You're such a lovely lady!

As an introvert myself, I knew you'd love this one jist as much as I do; the line "one must put up barriers to keep oneself intact" has become a mantra for me, which I repeat to myself whenever I'm dealing with someone who's pushing my boundaries. If you'd like to see what a true genius Neil was behind the boundaries he'd established for himself, I'd like to suggest that you watch one of his extended drum solos, like O Baterista from their show in Rio, Der Trommler AKA Live In Frankfurt from their R30 Tour, or De Slagwerker from their Snakes And Arrows Tour video. Rest in peace Professor.

The one thing I don't believe you have observed is at the end of the concert, Neil always disappeared from the stage like in a puff of smoke. He literally ran from the stage, never taking a bow. He called the line across the stage where his drumkit sat the prime meridan and he only crossed it one time in his entire career to take a bow ... the very last concert he ever played with his friends. He shocked both Geddy and Alex, because he didn't tell them he was going to do it, and they were used to him disappearing. He never did a "Meet & Greet" - letting Geddy and Alex meet with the fans. There are videos where he discusses it, talking about people showing up at his door and how uncomfortable he felt about that. He talked about how mortified he would have felt to do that to his musical heroes. An introspective and sensitive genius, and we are all fortunate to live in his time. I'm still pushing for Xanadu ... but another song in this vein, a few years later, is Subdivisions. All three considered themselves nerds, and it's a song about those social divisions in school. A song for the rest of us. Absolutely love your reactions, and please ... listen to their live masterpiece, Xanadu from Exit Stage Left.

June 6th, 1981.. the Red Sox are in town in Oakland and me and my buds (still close buds to this day) are attending the Red Sox/A's game at the Oakland Coliseum. We pull in and the parking lot is pure mayhem, what's this? Oh it's just Rush playing next door at the Coliseum Arena on the Moving Pictures tour, so we're sharing the lot with the concert crowd. I was a Rush fan at the time but not nearly to the extent I would be come later on ,so I'm at the baseball game instead of the concert. It was without a doubt one of the best concerts I've ever been too only surpassed by Nightwish! The sound that these 3 guys could produce on stage was incredible. Neil's electronic drums were all keyed to the lights/lasers at that show and when he did a drum solo it was also an incredible light show! My friends and I had a small wager going as to whether or not they would play much old stuff or if it would all be stuff from the new album they were promoting at the time. They didn't disappoint and only played like 2 or 3 new songs - the rest of the night was the old stuff and they rocked it!! Great stuff - hope to see you do more Rush.

I had the music to YYZ in one of my guitar magazines and asked him to record it for me. When I got home I learned to it and just laughed - no way was that going to be able to play that! But my teacher had let the tape record too long, and he had copied Limelight as well. I was hooked. Next week, he was teaching me Limelight. Eventually learned it on bass as well - Geddy’s parts are so much fun to play. Loving your journey!

I had a similar experience only moments ago myself, when I entered a café and the lady behind the counter commented on my 'Sierra Nevada Summerfest Lager' hoodie, as that's a beverage brand you don't come across a lot here in New Zealand (Said hoodie had once been a present from my parents-in-law after they'd returned from a US trip).
So we had a nice wee chat with each other too, and it turned out she was originally from Colombia 😀
And I need to get my hands on a Rush shirt some time soon myself! They've been my favourite band since '89, when I was 19 😊
And lastly: There is no way around for you to also watch 'Xanadu' from this same show in Montreal! 🤩 Even better if you chose one of the videos which have it in tandem with 'The Trees', which segues into 'Xanadu', making for a 15-minute-long mind-blowing experience 😍👍

I loved that you thought he was holding out that long note during the solo. He used a loop pedal so that the repeating set of notes was simply repeating in order for him to play a second part over it. If you go back to that moment in the video, you'll see him walk up to the system on the floor and tap his foot a couple times at the beginning of that repeated looped sound and at the end, before they come out of the solo, he walks back up and turns it off with his feet. Part of their genius as a the piece was playing everything live, bit using newer technology like that to sound larger than a the 3 piece band.
In one video of Neil he talks about having some sound effect triggers for things that should be in the synth, but Geddy is singing, playing the bass with his hands and keys with his feet and can't activate the sound effect, but Neil can hit it on his kit.

Okay as a recent convert to your channel, I am pleased that the Rush thing wasn't a flash in the pan. 😊😊 Watching you have the same visceral reaction tom their incredible music as I have is incredible! Frankly your "not English good-ness" is better than most peoples' good English. You are honest. Please carry on.
Ahhhhh....introverts. NOW you have my attention as a....ermmmmmm.....ambivert thingy Whatever, I get Neil's perspective. I'm currently reading Ghost Rider. It is both heart-breaking and hopeful.
On a side note, and for purely selfish reasons, I want to say I am enjoying your FRINGE........look it up, it is English, from England and in fact the whole of the UK....I mean what the hell is a BANG? Sounds more like a hair trigger to me, right?! 😋😋
    💥💥
Anyway, moving on, as someone who is pleased to see that you DO read all these ridiculous comments (🤨😋😋)....have you a take on why Rush - as brill as they are - didn't sell as many records as....let us say, Beyoncé, who is frankly awful? Why?
Why Madonna and not Rush or the wonderful and talented Cyndi Lauper?
Why is Katy Perry a global phenomenon with her producers and ghost writers, but not Rush?
Why did Rhianna get a HUGE hit with S&M, when Ester Dean has an incredible voice, as shown when she appeared in Pitch Perfect? She was also behind hits from Beyonce, Rhianna and Katy Perry (when frankly none of them have her voice, not even close, and very little real musical talent)?
It honestly has done my head in for decades. Especially after Sandi Thom, a stunning singer/songwriter who had a good band ended up melting down on YT because she just couldn't make any decent money in music! She was great too, and a total introvert (oh my, she just couldn't talk to the audience after a gig, not even my young daughters)

Americans don't know what a 'fringe' is?! Mind = Blown 😅

Great reaction. Just such a great live band! I hope you got some extra sauces for having on the Rush t-shirt and being served by a Rush fan! I'd imagine it's hard enough living in the limelight anyway without being an introvert. Next? Closer to the Heart live (A Show of Hands)

In this case, I believe the high harmonic of the solo was on some sort of loop that he started and stopped with his foot. You can hear the difference if you check out the studio version.

Done with a Delay effect pedal, apparently. There's a 'Shred With Shifty' episode on the Premier Guitar channel in which Alex teaches Chris Shiflett from the Foo Fighters how to play this solo, and he also explains how to achieve that sustained note at the end 🙂

A woman who _REALLY_ appreciates Rush's genius, is rare in my world. I _LOVED_ your reaction. Will you marry me?😉 Kidding, but seriously, most girls/women I have known, either don't or won't listen to Rush. My theory is, it's because most of their songs are philosophical in nature or have to do with space and time. Very few (if any) love songs.
