You simply just can't recast Iron Man. See, with other heroes you mentioned, like Batman, Spiderman, James Bond, etc. They were always immensely popular, and we would turn up to see the hero, no matter who was playing them, no matter the year, because we liked the hero. Iron Man, prior to the launch of the MCU, was always a middle of the pack Marvel hero. Downey Jr. was perfect casting. and turned Iron Man into a top tier hero. We showed up for him AND Iron Man. Not just one or the other. Also, the MCU was just as much about character development as it was heroes doing kickass things. We saw Stark, played by Downey Jr go from a eccentric playboy billionaire, to a man suffering from PTSD, and guilt and genuinely wants to protect the world. And this was a change that took the better part of 10 years. That's not something you can re-cast. Now if Marvel takes Iron Man and passes the torch to RiRi Williams as Iron Heart, and she plays basically the same role in the world, then thats fine. But you can't just replace Tony. Just can't, lol.
Major Jackson I don't know if I can agree with that. sure so far I could pratically say it for many of the Marvel characters. At his point more so than Paul Rudd Antman I think Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth are also synonymous with their character at this point. Thor and Cap did give us character and developement that made them some of the most well loved marvel heroes today, and it'S something that I appreciate especially with the recent RAgnarok and Infinity War Movie developements in Thors characer. They made Thor just so much better. I enjoy this Thor so much I don't even want him to be different ever again. BUT this is nowhere on the scale of Tony. Especially with Ant-Man I - and of course that's personal - don't think you can compare it anywhere to Tony Stark at this point. Not because I don't like Rudd's performance, but he is just nowhere as deeply immersed in this universe. He only appears in I think two movies and while he did a lot for the character of Scott Lang I think at this point you can still easily replace him and put another Ant-Man into the role because the many connections that Tony Stark has to this MCU universe just are not there yet with Scott. Scott Lang's character still very much exists within the boundaries of his own movie. You can absolutely recast him. Of course the new actor would have to be compared to Rudd - but he still might surprise you. And if he doesn't and can't pull off Scott Lang the way Rudd does, all you have is still just once character that you don't like as much as with a different actor. It wouldn't effect the grander universe, the continuity or the other characters of the MCU that much at this point. With Tony on the other hand, should they recast him ... this wouldn't be the Tony that built up a friendship with all the avengers through so many hardships and set-backs. This wouldn't be the tony whose parents were killed by bucky, or the tony who blames himself for all that shit gone wrong in the last movies, or the tony that is Spidey's mentor ... Tony has a connection - if sometimes only a formal one - to almost every single character in this universe. recasting him, all of that woul be lost, besides just tony's own character and the developement we had with him. With Rudd the only thing lost really would be the events and character of this one movie.
I do think a "Tony Stark" from another dimension IS possible and could be a workable change within the MCU (he's the same character but NOT the same person) but it would effectively be the same as your Iron Heart idea in that everyone would have to develop their own, new relations with the character.
Zak Nusbaum but I don't like that idea. Because than it would just be a different character... still. The problem with a new tony stark (even a multiversse stark) would be that he'd still have to always be compared to downey jr.'s stark. Even in new iron man adatations completely outside the MCU this would be a difficult task. But within the MCU, not only would the actor, his performance and interpretation hold up to scrutiny, but his character would also have to hold up to that same scrutiny in-verse. (As Bruce for example would always have to compare this new tony to the old tony). It's really really really difficult with not really much to gain. I always think it's easier and better option to just bring in a new character entirely that does not have to be compared to Tony. We don't NEED another Iron Man. We lso don't need to put rhodey in the iron man suit, he could just put some of the iron man suit updates in his suit and still call himself the war machine. We also don't need a new tony character really. for what purpose would we need that. Of course, I guess in 20 years it would be kinda cool t get a new iron man movie eventually ... but I'd prefer this to be outside of the MCU or in a reboot kind of thing ... not a new iron man in the mcu.

Rarity 1992 they’ve also altered the newer, modern comics to match MCU tony stark, that’s how much of an impact he’s had on the character. They literally adapted the comics to be like Robert Downey jr

I could NEVER watch a serious movie with RDJ as protagonist without thinking about the selfish an humorous Iron Man. I think Infinity War Parts 1 + 2 should be the time for Downey Jr.'s Iron Man to go out with a bang. He made it clear he doesn't plan on staying Iron Man forever. It would also be an appropriate time for Chris Evans' Captain America to end on a high note since Evans has also said he doesn't plan on playing it forever. It doesn't make for a true "war" if no main character dies permanently, which was Civil War's biggest problem with Rhodes not dying from the fall.
honestly just have iron man retire from the hero business and just let him provide support/assistance in hte background, maybe even have him cameo for a bit in some superhero films.
My favorite part is that the line was improvised, he was supposed to read the cards and keep his identity as iron man a secret, but RDJ decided to give that line instead. I think that decision helped to shape the MCU into what it is. And obviously had a huge impact going forward.

Thanks! Oh and they launched with him because most of their A-list characters were in the hands of other studios (X-Men, Spider-Man). Even Incredible Hulk, released later that same year, they had to share the profits with Universal. It was also cheaper than Captain America, since it didn’t involve period piece set dressing. Pre-Disney, Marvel Studios was VERY careful with how it spent its money (coming out of bankruptcy in the early 2000s).
Yup. For most people, RDJ IS Tony Stark. He is absolutely perfect for the role and Disney owes him A LOT because the MCU was really born on his performance and charisma. They shouldn't do him the disservice of recasting him, after all he's given them.
I don't think the question is can iron man be recast. It's should he be recast. RDJ is Tony Stark to most people, and anytime in the near future for a recast is too soon. Instead, i want to see the MCU introduce new characters that can look up to him as a legend after he dies. He'll be immortallized in MCH history, and maybe down the line his child or RiRi can take up the mantle. But when he dies, they should let it sink in for a while, not rush to recast him. I completely agree with you. If you wanted to replace RDJ, you'd have to replace everyone. I hope they don't try to do it. If he leaves/dies, they should just move on without him.
I think if you're going to replace any of them, You need to do it on screen in a "Passing the Torch to your successor" kind of way. Don't just recast them off screen and then act like they never changed actors. Like how Logan dies, but his Clone/Daughter has the ability to go on. Conversely, RDJ could either raise a son, or find another character to pass it on to, but it's gotta be on screen. That's the only way broader audiences will be cool with the transition. That way the new character doesn't have to pretend to be RDJ playing Iron man, they can be their own character with their own personality. It would be sad without the OG actors but they can't do it forever.
Even before I watched this video, only by the title, my first think was you commentary. Obviously you can't recast RDJ in the same universe (even spider man Sony could not do that, they needed to reboot). So if you want to continue the same universe, you necessary needs to "passing the torch" way. In the Iron Man 3 this kind of happened with the boy that RDJ was casting.
yeah, this guy is thinking way too hard in the wrong direction, of course you can't recast Tony Stark, but why would Iron man just stop being a thing in the MCU? Why not have a brand new Iron man with a different character altogether? It wouldn't really mess up all that much.

Each one can be iterated upon. They’re recognizable symbols with faces attached. Indiana Jones? Person. Luke Skywalker? Person. Tony Stark? Person. Tony Stark isn’t Iron Man. Iron Man is Tony Stark. And Robert Downey Jr. IS Tony Stark. You can make someone else Iron Man, you cannot make someone else Tony Stark. This is like recasting Han Solo. Bad idea from the jump. Other superheroes are different. They are the costume, the symbol, the iconography. RDJ made Iron Man a household name with his bare hands. Iron Man 3 had it exactly right. Tony Stark is Iron Man even WITHOUT the suit. He’s the essential component. Someone else can take on the mantle, but they do not get to be Tony Stark.

Nelson Roy Batman: Bruce Wayne, Richard Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Damian Wayne, Azrael, and Terry McGinnis, even Bane took on the mantle of the Bat. You can cast Batman as any of these characters, cause they exist and were once Batman. But we all love the Bruce Wayne and Terry McGinnis as Batman. Spider-Man: Peter Parker, Ben Reilly, Kaine, Miles Morales, Miguel O'Hara, and Otto Octavius, even Kraven wore the Spider Man suit and fought crime just to show he was better. You can cast Spider-Man as any of these characters, cause they exist and were once Spider-Man. But we all love Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Miguel O'Hara as Spider-Man. Superman: Clark Kent (Kal-El), Hernan Guerra (Lor-Zod), Hank Henshaw, and Bizarro. Should I go on?

They could recast Tony by having him have son/apprentice or just have someone who inspire to take up his mantle. I believe they should do this when Robert decides to stop. But, I will miss Robert as much as I miss Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

i think the dynamic between ironman and spiderman was the closest we got to this. obviously he wont be the new ironman but it may become a sort of torch passing. tony has already praised peters web design and gave him a suit he made just for peter. he also seems to have a sense of pride for peters accomplishments and truely cares about his safety. peter also got the most screen time when disappearing to have a bigger effect with tony. (yes, im sure that we will be getting them back at the end of infinity war 2) the groundwork has been made, though i feel like it would be better with at least one more movie to cement it. i feel like marvel is making their relationship more of a parent-child one for a reason this is just my theory though. im sure marvel will do something else in the end.

They should just let Iron man die with RDJ. With so many super heros left to mess around with and introduce still, why do we need more Iron man taking up time and space. We already have 3 movies and heaps of other apperiences! That more then enough for one character in the MCU. They should focus on bringing other characters to life and giving them movies instead of bringing Tony back for another round.

Sure they can. As long as you get someone who at least resembles the original actor and can sound just like them(as if they were doing a voice acting gig), it will be fine. Recasting is a normal part of the film & television industry and as long as it's done in a respectful manner, it's okay. There are so many stories from the comic books involving these characters to pull from for future MCU projects, and to stop using any of these characters in the MCU franchise just because the actor who's been playing one of them wants to quit the role or dies is really, really stupid and disrespectful to the characters, the real fans of said characters and Marvel's IPs, and to the writers & artists who have brought these characters to life over the years.
I think it is unquestionable that Tony Stark will stop superheroing after Avengers IW part 2, whatever it will be called. And personally, i hope it's by retiring... i reaaaaaally hope the one that sacrifices his life is Captain America, and Tony is still alive at the end, but decides to finally hang up the suit for good. It would just feel good for both characters, you know? that's what Captain America signed up for, and that's what Tony deserves. In any case, while you can't re-cast the character... why wouldn't he entrust the technology to make and pilot the suits to someone else..? If that happens, i hope it's Shuri :3
You can recast Iron Man but you can't recast Tony Stark. To recast Iron Man, you just need to make a new character to replace him. The same goes for Captain America.
Yes, as much as RDJ was definitive for Iron Man, it goes double for Chris Evans. Evans had the greater thespian challenge making Captain America, the quintessential blonde blue-eye patriotic ace, relatable that he would be supremely difficult to recast.

I highly doubt you could find someone to replace Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. all of the actors who play the Avengers currently are practically immortalized now, aren't they? and the side characters, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Tom Holland as Spiderman, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Chris Pratt as Starlord, Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange, Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Don Cheadle as Rhodey, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, and theres so, SO many others i dont have the time to write all their names, but i can assure you each of them deserve it. every one of the actors we've come to love over the past decade. do you really think any one of them could ever be recast? Paul Bettany as Vision, for example, if you compare him to his Comic book counterpart, is SOOOO much better. James Spader as Ultron was easily one of the best portrayals of the character as well. and i hope i dont even need to mention Josh Brolin as Thanos, who already has received critical acclaim the world over. and i just want to remind everyone that we have had the privilege to witness it firsthand. children, twenty, thirty years from now, will look back on this moment in history and think: "man, what was it like to see the first Iron Man movie in theaters? what was it like being one of the first people in the world to see Civil War? what was it like watching Thanos win in Infinity War?" i know that because, as a massive Star Wars fan, i myself do it all the time. what was it like to hear "No, I am your Father" in theaters? what was it like being the first to see Luke and Vader in the final duel aboard the second Death Star? this 10 year production is nothing short of legendary, and they still have plans for the years to come! this may be the end of Iron Man, and maybe a few others, but I know Chadwick Boseman still has more to go, Tom Holland still has more, we've still got a lot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to watch. and whether that includes Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man or not, i'm excited to see what happens next.
They could probably get away with Bucky becoming the next captain America maybe even falcon (can't remember for sure but I think that happened in the comic books) Thor could be temporarily changed to female Thor or beta ray if they do the unworthy Thor style storyline (which I'd love to see as a movie one day)

I honestly don't think we'll see a Tony Stark recast for many many years, if ever. Having said that, I do think that we could see another Iron Man, another character taking on the mantle.
Yeah, Downey can't be replaced, at least not for a long while. Retire him in someway, and go another 10 years of movies. Then, he can come back, or not, there are tons of Marvel characters that could work great in movies. I honestly want Dr. Doom to fill that "main character" role in future phases, now that they'll get the rights back.
dr doom could be the main villain for the next 10 years or so, he's dangerous and powerful enough, and at the end of that decade, just do a secret wars, make battleworld, and then recast or retire any remaining characters, by using the multiverse.
I'd enjoy seeing Doom brought into the MCU. He could rule or even form his nation, Latveria, since Wakanda exists, other fictional nations could also exist. Plus he wouldn't be the only MCU character to play the role of hero/villain and rule his nation. Black Panther can get away with it, so why not Doom too? He's great with robots, so if they do kill him off, it can be revealed to have been one of his many doombot doppelgangers. Maybe a Dr. Doom plot would involve using some remaining pieces of Ultron, or one of Ultron's own robots. Maybe reprogramming or adjusting Ultron's A.I. for instance or building a new A.I. from the fragments, that becomes a new Ultron? Or maybe the Red Skull returns, having been brought forward in time, by the Tesseract or reformed by it in the present? Red Skull working for Doom, and plotting to escape and reform Hydra?
I honestly can't wait for Doctor Doom. Magic + technology done in the MCU? Sign me up! It's why the shot where Iron Man flies in front of a spellcasting Doctor Strange is one of my favorites in Infinity War.
Here's to hoping that he would take a prodigy under his wing (like iron-heart but done correctly) and Spidey could get a new freind. That way they could correctly retire RDJ and still have a aesthetically similar character.
I think that's what MCU Spider-Man is supposed to be already. They're setting him up to take Stark's place like a Dan Slott, Parker Industries style thing. Then again since they have to share Spidey with Sony they might not want to give him too much importance in the MCU at large.
This would be a clever solution to the problem. Let Peter grow up and fill Tony's shoes and bring in Miles (which they already hinted at with his uncle Aaron in Homecoming) to be the teen Spider-Man. They can do the Parker Industries of the comics only not stupid.
One thing I disagree on - that Iron Man only came into prominence in the comics after the first movie. I think Civil War was published in 2006? To me, that was really the beginning of Iron Man being so huge in the comics. After that, he definitely got great writers and top-billing as far as crossover potential and utilization in world-shaping events, but I think the same thing sort of happened with Captain America, Thor and the Avengers in general. Comics at the big companies (especially with their top tier characters) have fallen into a cycle of huge events every year or so that have world-ending potential and far-reaching consequences with a lot of dramatic weight. The amount of characters dying to bring tragedy to main characters or shake up whole teams (or the whole universe, in the case of Xavier a few years ago) has been trending upward, which are part of the tactics that DC and Marvel have been using to draw people in. Since Civil War was marketed so heavily on Cap vs Iron Man and also brought in a ton of readers with the death of Captain America, huge stakes like that have been the norm for the last decade or so. Batman died, Superman died again, Robin died, Wolverine died again, Jean Grey came back again and maybe died again, Captain America has turned old or turned into a Hydra agent or been Sam Wilson or Bucky, and so on. My point is that Iron Man has been a huge part of this cycle in comics, and while the movies definitely had an effect, this really prominent Tony Stark in the comics has been building for more than a decade because the character had developed into a really interesting ideological foil to many other heroes in Civil War, and I'd say pretty much the majority of his development since then has been weighted with guilt over his actions . He has either been after redemption for his actions during Civil War, which lead to the death of Cap and the rise of Norman Osborn and the Sentry, or as a member of the Illuminati, which lead to problems like the Infinity Gems popping up again and the whole Battleworld thing.
I have to agree with a lot of this. Iron Man was a very popular character from the standpoint of comics. He also had a considerable presence outside of comics (primarily with children), during the post-animated 1966 series through the early to mid 70's, in the form of MEGO Action Figures, activity books, Underoos, lunch boxes, and several other items. After that time period, he didn't have much mainstream crossover appeal. He would appear in the cartoons of other Marvel characters and a series or two of his own, but he didn't seem to catch on. There was quite a bit going on in pop culture when they tried to make Iron Man a thing again. He didn't catch on in the mainstream in a big way until the feature film and the MCU. I credit the same pop culture that made it difficult for Iron Man to catch on with why he struck a cord with general audiences so quickly. You have to consider most of the comic book/superhero films since Batman 89' had taken on a dark or grounded edge. Make no mistake, we had a few anomalies here and there, but for the most part, dark and gritty/grounded and more realistic was the order of the day. Most of the heroes wore black leather or costumes that looked like something a real person would wear. Everything was starting to look and seem the same, and when they did try to go for something different, the filmmakers acted like they couldn't take the course material seriously enough. Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins and the Dark Knight notwithstanding (because Batman and similar films would've been the only ones to gain credibility following his template), comic book/superhero films were getting stale and general audiences were starting to lose interest. Audiences were looking for something a little different. Iron Man dropped, the MCU started, other studios started doing more with their comic book properties, and now Hollywood is crying because comic book films are making the most money.
I think what he meant was that the general audience... whenever asked who their favorite super hero was would always give generic answers like Batman or Spider-Man, but once the 1st movie came out.... you saw a rise in Iron Man fans and merch scattered everywhere. Yeah, Civil War did the character justice, but from what I noticed was that there was a complete tonal change that RDJ overhauled onto Iron Man in damn near every sense of media out there. If you need one quick example.... Iron Man is now considered to be the wise crack of the (MCU/Games) Avengers now, and no longer Hawkeye, I use to only ever see him crack a few one liners or some pun here and there for him to barely shut up now
Iron Man is the co-founders of The Avengers, Marvel's third most prominent superhero team. He was always involved in events and crossovers, even before Civil War. He was the lead in The Crossing event, which came out in the early 90's.

In universe he's always been a big important character, but out of universe he was pretty much a b or c list character as Captain Midnight says outside a few really good stories he just wasn't a really interesting character for the majority of readers. I didn't really learn about him till the 90s cartoon series and I loved that show and still do for as flawed as it was it took all the good stories that made Tony interesting in the comics and adapted them making a pretty cool and interesting character especially in Season 2. So for me, till RDJ that was my ideal Ironman. And I'm glad he's finally getting the recognition the character deserves.
Maybe among your niche group of friends that Iron Man became more popular in 2006, but to most people who weren't reading comics at the time like me, Iron Man was considered a B-list character at best. It wasn't until the 2008 film that even non comic book readers knew who Iron man was, and made him an iconic a list character. sure the 2006 civil war may have made him popular among you and your niche friends that only make up the small minority when it comes to watching the mcu. sure. but it was the 2008 film that made iron man the iconic character he is today among all audiences.
Eh, the thing is that a recasting also comes with a rebranding. The current ironman is only playable by robert, because the role has been molded around him more than people realize. The first time there was a new bond movie, or the first time there was a new doctor who, the people only knew one version. Sure, it may not be the same universe, but there are a lot of similar issues. And then there is the fact that in-universe, hero titles are passed down like a mantle. So technically, anyone can be Captain America, anyone can be Iron Man.
that last line I believe is also one of the things that really sets iron man apart and makes him very iconic is how he didn't try to hide his identity as a superhero. compare to every other movie hero out there, he is not keeping it a secret and is open about.
Recasting is so very different from someone else coming in to continue the legacy. Personally I'd love to see Ironheart. Would tie in so well to this "next generation" MCU that Marvel is building.

(NB: I may have put too much thought into this!)
Well, to be fair, both Batman and Superman have sported beards in these films, although if Cavill could not have avoided the mustache, they should have had him bearded up. It actually would make more sense to have one because he wouldn't have access to razors while being buried for so long.

He never interacts with any of the significant characters from his solo film again, so it really doesn't matter. Betty's dad reappears in Civil War, but Banner isn't even there. I would even guess that the recasting was the reason they made that film seem so disconnected from the rest of the universe.
Siddhant Sharma Sadly, that's your opinion. Many fans loved how comic based The Incredible Hulk was compared to Hulk. I personally loved Edward Norton. He had a somewhat nerdy tone to his banner side that everyone seemed to like. Not like the hulk actor now. He's not that bad, but you can tell he's a replacement.

MCU has given a perfect end to Iron Man, he had already passed torch to another super hero (Spiderman) before he died. While I'm fully aware that Spiderman is not even close to as powerful as Iron-man is but a lot of Tony Stark can be seen in MCU's Spiderman. The suit he has, his personal AI Karen etc is so Tony Stark and the impact Tony has on Peter is huge so its best to continue Iron-man's legacy through Spider-Man, re casting Iron Man would be a horrible idea. Plus since MCU & RDJ have made Iron-man by far the most popular character in pop culture in 20th century, it seems like Spider Man is the only character who can match that.
Maybe if they reboot the whole MCU they could/would recast him, but not in the current one. They should either kill him (OH GOSH, NO!) or retire him (please let him live on in peace Marvel, please.) but they should not get someone new. besides, they could probably ask RDJ to do a little more if they needed Iron Man again and he'd say yes. I don't agree with your sentiment. Having attachment to a particular actor is understandable, but gatekeeping the character is not. The character doesn't belong to the actor, no matter how good he was at the hands of that actor. Iove Tobey Maguire as Spiderman and I was excited when Andrew Garfield was the new Spiderman. I wasn't much of a fan of those movies, granted, but before seeing them, I had no problem with another actor doing another take on the character I already know. I think the reason why people can't accept the idea of anothet Iron Man is because they can't compare it to any other version. Unlike with Batman or Spiderman, most of the world doesn't know Iron Man outside of his most current film portrayal. Which is rather sad, because he's a great character in comics and some of the cartoons.

I agree that recasting Iron man though the multi verse would ruin the MCU franchise . it would be a lazy solution and it will show there is no consequences in the MCU . one of the flaws of Doctor Strange and the Fantastic Beasts was that terrible situations can be easily reversed . Flashpoint is a very good arc that remedies that problem . so , I hope that MCU would retire Iron Man and won't recast him.
I also feel that this universe’s Tony has had his arc. He was an arrogant carefree man who over many films developed into a man whose had to come to terms with his past and, most of all, take responsibility for his actions. By the time we reach Civil War he is emotionally broken and longs for stability. Spider-Man was a great movie for him because he went from the assuming the role of the protagonist to the role of father figure and mentor. But overall it’s time for him to go be at peace and I think a super epic death for him would be awesome.

Re casting is almost impossible in the MCU for the biggest characters. We saw it with RDJ and with Chadwick Boseman (R.I.P.) Marvel will not recast its main characters because they really do perfect castings that are truly loved by fans and moviegoers.
I've been saying for years that you cannot keep a "forever-connected" universe for Marvel movies like you can for Marvel Comics. Unlike in comics, actors age in real time.
Two words: Legacy Characters. There are plenty of characters that can take up the Mantle of most Marvels heroes and have done in the comics till they decide to undo it for various reasons. Done right, MCU can continue for a good long time without feeling too contrived. Like with Captain America, if Chris wants to retire from the role there is always Bucky or Falcon that have held the Mantle in the comics and could take it up in the future, as they both characters audiences already know and like and the transition likely wouldn't cuase much backlash.

This is in line with my feelings about the MCU, and particularly why it's been successful while copycats (DCEU and and Universal's Dark Universe) are failing. Because they'd licensed most of their A list properties - the ones the non-comic community was familiar with like Spiderman and Wolverine - they brought in a cast of characters that we non-comic readers had never seen before, and made great movies. If the MCU feels a need to perpetually recast these characters, it will get as stale as Batman, Superman, Spiderman and the other reboot favourites are. Give these characters enough time so that a new generation that hasn't seen them before can be introduced. A DCEU that kicked off with Suicide Squad would have gone a lot smoother than with Batman v Superman, though that might have robbed us of the fantastic Wonder Woman - who'd had more than 35 years on ice by then.
You gotta give it time. RDJ was Iron Man. He didn't play Tony, but instead he managed to convince producers to let him play Tony as himself. You need to recast someone to play Robert Downy Jr if you wanna make it work.

You simply just can't recast Iron Man.
See, with other heroes you mentioned, like Batman, Spiderman, James Bond, etc. They were always immensely popular, and we would turn up to see the hero, no matter who was playing them, no matter the year, because we liked the hero. Iron Man, prior to the launch of the MCU, was always a middle of the pack Marvel hero. Downey Jr. was perfect casting. and turned Iron Man into a top tier hero. We showed up for him AND Iron Man. Not just one or the other.
Also, the MCU was just as much about character development as it was heroes doing kickass things. We saw Stark, played by Downey Jr go from a eccentric playboy billionaire, to a man suffering from PTSD, and guilt and genuinely wants to protect the world. And this was a change that took the better part of 10 years. That's not something you can re-cast.
Now if Marvel takes Iron Man and passes the torch to RiRi Williams as Iron Heart, and she plays basically the same role in the world, then thats fine. But you can't just replace Tony. Just can't, lol.
Same goes for Ant-Man, Paul Rudd is one and the same with the Scott Lang Marvel created in those movies.
Major Jackson I don't know if I can agree with that. sure so far I could pratically say it for many of the Marvel characters. At his point more so than Paul Rudd Antman I think Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth are also synonymous with their character at this point. Thor and Cap did give us character and developement that made them some of the most well loved marvel heroes today, and it'S something that I appreciate especially with the recent RAgnarok and Infinity War Movie developements in Thors characer. They made Thor just so much better. I enjoy this Thor so much I don't even want him to be different ever again. BUT this is nowhere on the scale of Tony.
Especially with Ant-Man I - and of course that's personal - don't think you can compare it anywhere to Tony Stark at this point. Not because I don't like Rudd's performance, but he is just nowhere as deeply immersed in this universe. He only appears in I think two movies and while he did a lot for the character of Scott Lang I think at this point you can still easily replace him and put another Ant-Man into the role because the many connections that Tony Stark has to this MCU universe just are not there yet with Scott.
Scott Lang's character still very much exists within the boundaries of his own movie. You can absolutely recast him. Of course the new actor would have to be compared to Rudd - but he still might surprise you. And if he doesn't and can't pull off Scott Lang the way Rudd does, all you have is still just once character that you don't like as much as with a different actor. It wouldn't effect the grander universe, the continuity or the other characters of the MCU that much at this point.
With Tony on the other hand, should they recast him ... this wouldn't be the Tony that built up a friendship with all the avengers through so many hardships and set-backs. This wouldn't be the tony whose parents were killed by bucky, or the tony who blames himself for all that shit gone wrong in the last movies, or the tony that is Spidey's mentor ... Tony has a connection - if sometimes only a formal one - to almost every single character in this universe. recasting him, all of that woul be lost, besides just tony's own character and the developement we had with him.
With Rudd the only thing lost really would be the events and character of this one movie.
I do think a "Tony Stark" from another dimension IS possible and could be a workable change within the MCU (he's the same character but NOT the same person) but it would effectively be the same as your Iron Heart idea in that everyone would have to develop their own, new relations with the character.

Zak Nusbaum but I don't like that idea. Because than it would just be a different character... still. The problem with a new tony stark (even a multiversse stark) would be that he'd still have to always be compared to downey jr.'s stark. Even in new iron man adatations completely outside the MCU this would be a difficult task. But within the MCU, not only would the actor, his performance and interpretation hold up to scrutiny, but his character would also have to hold up to that same scrutiny in-verse. (As Bruce for example would always have to compare this new tony to the old tony). It's really really really difficult with not really much to gain. I always think it's easier and better option to just bring in a new character entirely that does not have to be compared to Tony. We don't NEED another Iron Man. We lso don't need to put rhodey in the iron man suit, he could just put some of the iron man suit updates in his suit and still call himself the war machine. We also don't need a new tony character really. for what purpose would we need that. Of course, I guess in 20 years it would be kinda cool t get a new iron man movie eventually ... but I'd prefer this to be outside of the MCU or in a reboot kind of thing ... not a new iron man in the mcu.

I think Infinity War Parts 1 + 2 should be the time for Downey Jr.'s Iron Man to go out with a bang. He made it clear he doesn't plan on staying Iron Man forever. It would also be an appropriate time for Chris Evans' Captain America to end on a high note since Evans has also said he doesn't plan on playing it forever. It doesn't make for a true "war" if no main character dies permanently, which was Civil War's biggest problem with Rhodes not dying from the fall.

Thanks! Oh and they launched with him because most of their A-list characters were in the hands of other studios (X-Men, Spider-Man). Even Incredible Hulk, released later that same year, they had to share the profits with Universal. It was also cheaper than Captain America, since it didn’t involve period piece set dressing. Pre-Disney, Marvel Studios was VERY careful with how it spent its money (coming out of bankruptcy in the early 2000s).

I don't think the question is can iron man be recast. It's should he be recast. RDJ is Tony Stark to most people, and anytime in the near future for a recast is too soon. Instead, i want to see the MCU introduce new characters that can look up to him as a legend after he dies. He'll be immortallized in MCH history, and maybe down the line his child or RiRi can take up the mantle. But when he dies, they should let it sink in for a while, not rush to recast him. Just my opinions

I think if you're going to replace any of them, You need to do it on screen in a "Passing the Torch to your successor" kind of way. Don't just recast them off screen and then act like they never changed actors. Like how Logan dies, but his Clone/Daughter has the ability to go on. Conversely, RDJ could either raise a son, or find another character to pass it on to, but it's gotta be on screen. That's the only way broader audiences will be cool with the transition. That way the new character doesn't have to pretend to be RDJ playing Iron man, they can be their own character with their own personality. It would be sad without the OG actors but they can't do it forever.
Even before I watched this video, only by the title, my first think was you commentary. Obviously you can't recast RDJ in the same universe (even spider man Sony could not do that, they needed to reboot). So if you want to continue the same universe, you necessary needs to "passing the torch" way.
In the Iron Man 3 this kind of happened with the boy that RDJ was casting.

Tony Stark isn’t Iron Man. Iron Man is Tony Stark. And Robert Downey Jr. IS Tony Stark. You can make someone else Iron Man, you cannot make someone else Tony Stark.
This is like recasting Han Solo. Bad idea from the jump. Other superheroes are different. They are the costume, the symbol, the iconography. RDJ made Iron Man a household name with his bare hands. Iron Man 3 had it exactly right. Tony Stark is Iron Man even WITHOUT the suit. He’s the essential component. Someone else can take on the mantle, but they do not get to be Tony Stark.

They could recast Tony by having him have son/apprentice or just have someone who inspire to take up his mantle. I believe they should do this when Robert decides to stop. But, I will miss Robert as much as I miss Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

i think the dynamic between ironman and spiderman was the closest we got to this. obviously he wont be the new ironman but it may become a sort of torch passing. tony has already praised peters web design and gave him a suit he made just for peter. he also seems to have a sense of pride for peters accomplishments and truely cares about his safety. peter also got the most screen time when disappearing to have a bigger effect with tony. (yes, im sure that we will be getting them back at the end of infinity war 2)
the groundwork has been made, though i feel like it would be better with at least one more movie to cement it. i feel like marvel is making their relationship more of a parent-child one for a reason

They should just let Iron man die with RDJ. With so many super heros left to mess around with and introduce still, why do we need more Iron man taking up time and space. We already have 3 movies and heaps of other apperiences! That more then enough for one character in the MCU. They should focus on bringing other characters to life and giving them movies instead of bringing Tony back for another round.

Sure they can. As long as you get someone who at least resembles the original actor and can sound just like them(as if they were doing a voice acting gig), it will be fine. Recasting is a normal part of the film & television industry and as long as it's done in a respectful manner, it's okay. There are so many stories from the comic books involving these characters to pull from for future MCU projects, and to stop using any of these characters in the MCU franchise just because the actor who's been playing one of them wants to quit the role or dies is really, really stupid and disrespectful to the characters, the real fans of said characters and Marvel's IPs, and to the writers & artists who have brought these characters to life over the years.

I think it is unquestionable that Tony Stark will stop superheroing after Avengers IW part 2, whatever it will be called. And personally, i hope it's by retiring... i reaaaaaally hope the one that sacrifices his life is Captain America, and Tony is still alive at the end, but decides to finally hang up the suit for good. It would just feel good for both characters, you know? that's what Captain America signed up for, and that's what Tony deserves.
In any case, while you can't re-cast the character... why wouldn't he entrust the technology to make and pilot the suits to someone else..? If that happens, i hope it's Shuri :3

You can recast Iron Man but you can't recast Tony Stark. To recast Iron Man, you just need to make a new character to replace him. The same goes for Captain America.
Yes, as much as RDJ was definitive for Iron Man, it goes double for Chris Evans. Evans had the greater thespian challenge making Captain America, the quintessential blonde blue-eye patriotic ace, relatable that he would be supremely difficult to recast.

Paul Bettany as Vision, for example, if you compare him to his Comic book counterpart, is SOOOO much better. James Spader as Ultron was easily one of the best portrayals of the character as well. and i hope i dont even need to mention Josh Brolin as Thanos, who already has received critical acclaim the world over.
and i just want to remind everyone that we have had the privilege to witness it firsthand. children, twenty, thirty years from now, will look back on this moment in history and think: "man, what was it like to see the first Iron Man movie in theaters? what was it like being one of the first people in the world to see Civil War? what was it like watching Thanos win in Infinity War?" i know that because, as a massive Star Wars fan, i myself do it all the time. what was it like to hear "No, I am your Father" in theaters? what was it like being the first to see Luke and Vader in the final duel aboard the second Death Star?
this 10 year production is nothing short of legendary, and they still have plans for the years to come! this may be the end of Iron Man, and maybe a few others, but I know Chadwick Boseman still has more to go, Tom Holland still has more, we've still got a lot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to watch. and whether that includes Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man or not, i'm excited to see what happens next.

They could probably get away with Bucky becoming the next captain America maybe even falcon (can't remember for sure but I think that happened in the comic books) Thor could be temporarily changed to female Thor or beta ray if they do the unworthy Thor style storyline (which I'd love to see as a movie one day)

I've grown up watching RDJ play Iron Man and grow into the amazing character he is now. In my opinion, he *is* the Iron Man and no one else can fulfill that role
I honestly don't think we'll see a Tony Stark recast for many many years, if ever. Having said that, I do think that we could see another Iron Man, another character taking on the mantle.
Yeah, Downey can't be replaced, at least not for a long while. Retire him in someway, and go another 10 years of movies. Then, he can come back, or not, there are tons of Marvel characters that could work great in movies. I honestly want Dr. Doom to fill that "main character" role in future phases, now that they'll get the rights back.
dr doom could be the main villain for the next 10 years or so, he's dangerous and powerful enough, and at the end of that decade, just do a secret wars, make battleworld, and then recast or retire any remaining characters, by using the multiverse.
I'd enjoy seeing Doom brought into the MCU. He could rule or even form his nation, Latveria, since Wakanda exists, other fictional nations could also exist. Plus he wouldn't be the only MCU character to play the role of hero/villain and rule his nation. Black Panther can get away with it, so why not Doom too? He's great with robots, so if they do kill him off, it can be revealed to have been one of his many doombot doppelgangers.
Maybe a Dr. Doom plot would involve using some remaining pieces of Ultron, or one of Ultron's own robots. Maybe reprogramming or adjusting Ultron's A.I. for instance or building a new A.I. from the fragments, that becomes a new Ultron? Or maybe the Red Skull returns, having been brought forward in time, by the Tesseract or reformed by it in the present? Red Skull working for Doom, and plotting to escape and reform Hydra?
I honestly can't wait for Doctor Doom. Magic + technology done in the MCU? Sign me up! It's why the shot where Iron Man flies in front of a spellcasting Doctor Strange is one of my favorites in Infinity War.
Nobody retired Batman after Nolan's trilogy was over. Why should Iron Man retire? Those movies aren't even that good to begin with.

I think that's what MCU Spider-Man is supposed to be already. They're setting him up to take Stark's place like a Dan Slott, Parker Industries style thing. Then again since they have to share Spidey with Sony they might not want to give him too much importance in the MCU at large.

This would be a clever solution to the problem. Let Peter grow up and fill Tony's shoes and bring in Miles (which they already hinted at with his uncle Aaron in Homecoming) to be the teen Spider-Man. They can do the Parker Industries of the comics only not stupid.
So eventually they will reboot the MCU with new stories. It's not going to happen next year, it will be 20 years from now
One thing I disagree on - that Iron Man only came into prominence in the comics after the first movie. I think Civil War was published in 2006? To me, that was really the beginning of Iron Man being so huge in the comics. After that, he definitely got great writers and top-billing as far as crossover potential and utilization in world-shaping events, but I think the same thing sort of happened with Captain America, Thor and the Avengers in general.
Comics at the big companies (especially with their top tier characters) have fallen into a cycle of huge events every year or so that have world-ending potential and far-reaching consequences with a lot of dramatic weight. The amount of characters dying to bring tragedy to main characters or shake up whole teams (or the whole universe, in the case of Xavier a few years ago) has been trending upward, which are part of the tactics that DC and Marvel have been using to draw people in.
Since Civil War was marketed so heavily on Cap vs Iron Man and also brought in a ton of readers with the death of Captain America, huge stakes like that have been the norm for the last decade or so. Batman died, Superman died again, Robin died, Wolverine died again, Jean Grey came back again and maybe died again, Captain America has turned old or turned into a Hydra agent or been Sam Wilson or Bucky, and so on.
My point is that Iron Man has been a huge part of this cycle in comics, and while the movies definitely had an effect, this really prominent Tony Stark in the comics has been building for more than a decade because the character had developed into a really interesting ideological foil to many other heroes in Civil War, and I'd say pretty much the majority of his development since then has been weighted with guilt over his actions . He has either been after redemption for his actions during Civil War, which lead to the death of Cap and the rise of Norman Osborn and the Sentry, or as a member of the Illuminati, which lead to problems like the Infinity Gems popping up again and the whole Battleworld thing.
I have to agree with a lot of this. Iron Man was a very popular character from the standpoint of comics. He also had a considerable presence outside of comics (primarily with children), during the post-animated 1966 series through the early to mid 70's, in the form of MEGO Action Figures, activity books, Underoos, lunch boxes, and several other items.
After that time period, he didn't have much mainstream crossover appeal. He would appear in the cartoons of other Marvel characters and a series or two of his own, but he didn't seem to catch on. There was quite a bit going on in pop culture when they tried to make Iron Man a thing again. He didn't catch on in the mainstream in a big way until the feature film and the MCU. I credit the same pop culture that made it difficult for Iron Man to catch on with why he struck a cord with general audiences so quickly.
You have to consider most of the comic book/superhero films since Batman 89' had taken on a dark or grounded edge. Make no mistake, we had a few anomalies here and there, but for the most part, dark and gritty/grounded and more realistic was the order of the day. Most of the heroes wore black leather or costumes that looked like something a real person would wear. Everything was starting to look and seem the same, and when they did try to go for something different, the filmmakers acted like they couldn't take the course material seriously enough.
Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins and the Dark Knight notwithstanding (because Batman and similar films would've been the only ones to gain credibility following his template), comic book/superhero films were getting stale and general audiences were starting to lose interest. Audiences were looking for something a little different. Iron Man dropped, the MCU started, other studios started doing more with their comic book properties, and now Hollywood is crying because comic book films are making the most money.
I think what he meant was that the general audience... whenever asked who their favorite super hero was would always give generic answers like Batman or Spider-Man, but once the 1st movie came out.... you saw a rise in Iron Man fans and merch scattered everywhere.
Yeah, Civil War did the character justice, but from what I noticed was that there was a complete tonal change that RDJ overhauled onto Iron Man in damn near every sense of media out there.
If you need one quick example.... Iron Man is now considered to be the wise crack of the (MCU/Games) Avengers now, and no longer Hawkeye, I use to only ever see him crack a few one liners or some pun here and there for him to barely shut up now
Iron Man is the co-founders of The Avengers, Marvel's third most prominent superhero team. He was always involved in events and crossovers, even before Civil War. He was the lead in The Crossing event, which came out in the early 90's.

In universe he's always been a big important character, but out of universe he was pretty much a b or c list character as Captain Midnight says outside a few really good stories he just wasn't a really interesting character for the majority of readers.
I didn't really learn about him till the 90s cartoon series and I loved that show and still do for as flawed as it was it took all the good stories that made Tony interesting in the comics and adapted them making a pretty cool and interesting character especially in Season 2. So for me, till RDJ that was my ideal Ironman. And I'm glad he's finally getting the recognition the character deserves.
Maybe among your niche group of friends that Iron Man became more popular in 2006, but to most people who weren't reading comics at the time like me, Iron Man was considered a B-list character at best. Please don't act like iron man was at any point before the 2008 movie up there in terms of popularity like Superman, Spider-Man, Batman and Wonder Woman because before 2008, I could easily ask over a 100 people, and every single damn one of them would know who those characters are, but most of them wouldn't know who Iron Man was. It wasn't until the 2008 film that even non comic book readers knew who Iron man was, and made him an iconic a list character. sure the 2006 civil war may have made him popular among you and your niche friends that only make up the small minority when it comes to watching the mcu. sure. but it was the 2008 film that made iron man the iconic character he is today among all audiences.

Eh, the thing is that a recasting also comes with a rebranding. The current ironman is only playable by robert, because the role has been molded around him more than people realize.
The first time there was a new bond movie, or the first time there was a new doctor who, the people only knew one version. Sure, it may not be the same universe, but there are a lot of similar issues.
And then there is the fact that in-universe, hero titles are passed down like a mantle. So technically, anyone can be Captain America, anyone can be Iron Man.
Sure, Iron Man can be recasted. Tony Stark can't.

that last line I believe is also one of the things that really sets iron man apart and makes him very iconic is how he didn't try to hide his identity as a superhero. compare to every other movie hero out there, he is not keeping it a secret and is open about.
Recasting is so very different from someone else coming in to continue the legacy. Personally I'd love to see Ironheart. Would tie in so well to this "next generation" MCU that Marvel is building.

Mind you, while the MCU appears to have fully embraced "facial furniture" (in varying degrees of hirsuteness!) - Captain America/Steve Rogers ('Infinity Wars' incarnation!), Winter Soldier/James "Bucky" Buchanan Barnes, Iron Man/Tony Stark, Thor, Heimdall, Doctor Strange, Nick Fury, Falcon/Sam Wilson, Black Panther/T'Challa, Star-Lord/Peter Quill...even Yondu & Rocket Raccoon (?!!) - whereas, apart from Aquaman (I'm just going to ignore anyone from 'Suicide Squad' - it's just "too soon"!), the DC Extended Cinematic Universe has gone in the opposite direction, eschewing the "hipster hero" look completely in preference of a cleanly-shaven upper lip, as Superman's digitally denuded terrible tache can attest in 'Justice League'! (NB: I may have put too much thought into this!)
Well, to be fair, both Batman and Superman have sported beards in these films, although if Cavill could not have avoided the mustache, they should have had him bearded up. It actually would make more sense to have one because he wouldn't have access to razors while being buried for so long.

Marvel can just either kill him off or have him move on and pass the Iron Man mantle to someone else (Rhody, Riry, even a new MCU character, it's not even a new concept, comics have been doing this forever (See also: There are countless faces behind the Captain America mantle).

What about the Bruce Banner recast, yeah I know it was at the begining of the MCU but it was strange that you talk baout War Machines recast but not Hulks.
Juan Luis Vargas Pareja It was after 1 movie and movie was terrible. All movies Tony Stark has been in have seen above average rating.
He never interacts with any of the significant characters from his solo film again, so it really doesn't matter. Betty's dad reappears in Civil War, but Banner isn't even there. I would even guess that the recasting was the reason they made that film seem so disconnected from the rest of the universe.
Siddhant Sharma Sadly, that's your opinion. Many fans loved how comic based The Incredible Hulk was compared to Hulk. I personally loved Edward Norton. He had a somewhat nerdy tone to his banner side that everyone seemed to like. Not like the hulk actor now. He's not that bad, but you can tell he's a replacement.
I really loved The Incredible Hulk is one of my favorite mcu movies, in the other hand Ironman was decent, Ironman 3 was garbage and Ironman 3 was really great. Btw I really like Rufallos version of Bruce Banner.

MCU has given a perfect end to Iron Man, he had already passed torch to another super hero (Spiderman) before he died. While I'm fully aware that Spiderman is not even close to as powerful as Iron-man is but a lot of Tony Stark can be seen in MCU's Spiderman. The suit he has, his personal AI Karen etc is so Tony Stark and the impact Tony has on Peter is huge so its best to continue Iron-man's legacy through Spider-Man, re casting Iron Man would be a horrible idea. Plus since MCU & RDJ have made Iron-man by far the most popular character in pop culture in 20th century, it seems like Spider Man is the only character who can match that.
Maybe if they reboot the whole MCU they could/would recast him, but not in the current one. They should either kill him (OH GOSH, NO!) or retire him (please let him live on in peace Marvel, please.) but they should not get someone new. besides, they could probably ask RDJ to do a little more if they needed Iron Man again and he'd say yes. Has happened plenty of times before.
Sorry but I think letting him live in peace for a while, have a kid with Pepper, return one last time to a final battle and sacrifice himself for the sake of the other Avengers then after a few years, his kid finds the suits and becomes the new Iron Man
I think the ability to kill off major characters that will leave a big emotional gut punch while *still* being able to continue no problem is the MCU's biggest strength they need to capitalize on #stilldontkillhawkeyetho
Even with the recast. Everyone has an emotional attachment to one version of the character. Christian Bale is batman. Christopher Reeve is Superman. Hugh Hackman is Wolverine. Chris Evans is Captain America. RDJ will always be the defining Iron Man
I don't agree with your sentiment. Having attachment to a particular actor is understandable, but gatekeeping the character is not. The character doesn't belong to the actor, no matter how good he was at the hands of that actor. Iove Tobey Maguire as Spiderman and I was excited when Andrew Garfield was the new Spiderman. I wasn't much of a fan of those movies, granted, but before seeing them, I had no problem with another actor doing another take on the character I already know. I think the reason why people can't accept the idea of anothet Iron Man is because they can't compare it to any other version. Unlike with Batman or Spiderman, most of the world doesn't know Iron Man outside of his most current film portrayal. Which is rather sad, because he's a great character in comics and some of the cartoons.

Great video though, and I agree that RDJ is irreplaceable. Marvel has plenty of options besides recasting, they've proven they can make any character interesting and relatable. Let's just get some new heroes in when the old ones retire. Spider-Woman. Black Knight. She-Hulk. The Thunderbolts. Marvel will be just fine if they continue to do what they do best: evolve.
I don't want to see anyone but Robert Downey Jr play Iron Man and I don't want to see a non Hugh Jackman Wolverine .
I agree that recasting Iron man though the multi verse would ruin the MCU franchise . it would be a lazy solution and it will show there is no consequences in the MCU . one of the flaws of Doctor Strange and the Fantastic Beasts was that terrible situations can be easily reversed . Flashpoint is a very good arc that remedies that problem . so , I hope that MCU would retire Iron Man and won't recast him.
I also feel that this universe’s Tony has had his arc. He was an arrogant carefree man who over many films developed into a man whose had to come to terms with his past and, most of all, take responsibility for his actions. By the time we reach Civil War he is emotionally broken and longs for stability. Spider-Man was a great movie for him because he went from the assuming the role of the protagonist to the role of father figure and mentor. But overall it’s time for him to go be at peace and I think a super epic death for him would be awesome.
Honestly, I think it would have a greater Impact for him to retire and basically enjoy live with Pepper.

I will kill myself if this is what happens. Shuri is a boring character with a bad actor who had a bad introduction and made racist comments in Black Panther.

I’m excited to see the conflict between T’Challa and Ulysses Klaue that’s so memorable in the comics come to life, and a fight between Kilmonger and T’Challa is going to be incredible too! Also the Dora Milaje and Shuri are sure to be huge highlights

I agree ...I think best case scenario is like you said, he just retires and disappears, or dies...or maybe, just MAYBE he sticks around as sort of a mentor and shows up every few movies but not nearly as much as he's around now.

What happens? They retire the character. Basically, RDjr cant be replaced. It will ruin the show and lose viewers. Best way is to retire the character and have someone else take the Iron Suit like War Machine. But nope. RDJr is Tony.
Re casting is almost impossible in the MCU for the biggest characters. We saw it with RDJ and with Chadwick Boseman (R.I.P.)
Marvel will not recast its main characters because they really do perfect castings that are truly loved by fans and moviegoers.
I've been saying for years that you cannot keep a "forever-connected" universe for Marvel movies like you can for Marvel Comics. Unlike in comics, actors age in real time.
Their best bet is to set a closing date to the MCU, but I'm pretty sure greed will cause them to wear the concept into the ground after Avengers 4.
Two words: Legacy Characters. There are plenty of characters that can take up the Mantle of most Marvels heroes and have done in the comics till they decide to undo it for various reasons.
Done right, MCU can continue for a good long time without feeling too contrived. Like with Captain America, if Chris wants to retire from the role there is always Bucky or Falcon that have held the Mantle in the comics and could take it up in the future, as they both characters audiences already know and like and the transition likely wouldn't cuase much backlash.

Couldn't agree with you more, I've thought this same thing for quite a while now. Going to be interesting to see what they do with the character.
This is in line with my feelings about the MCU, and particularly why it's been successful while copycats (DCEU and and Universal's Dark Universe) are failing. Because they'd licensed most of their A list properties - the ones the non-comic community was familiar with like Spiderman and Wolverine - they brought in a cast of characters that we non-comic readers had never seen before, and made great movies. If the MCU feels a need to perpetually recast these characters, it will get as stale as Batman, Superman, Spiderman and the other reboot favourites are. Give these characters enough time so that a new generation that hasn't seen them before can be introduced.
A DCEU that kicked off with Suicide Squad would have gone a lot smoother than with Batman v Superman, though that might have robbed us of the fantastic Wonder Woman - who'd had more than 35 years on ice by then.

You gotta give it time. RDJ was Iron Man. He didn't play Tony, but instead he managed to convince producers to let him play Tony as himself. You need to recast someone to play Robert Downy Jr if you wanna make it work.
