      But yeah, MJ is relatively bad, in my personal opinion. Her arc is entirely dependent on Peter. She isn't her own character enough. Her damsel in distress role is frustrating for everyone watching, but that's already been said. But her whole arc was about her getting together with Peter. It was built erratically. Even her acting performances end up being used as a plot device to get Mary Jane mad at Peter, rather than being, well, something else. Aside from that, though, I enjoyed the movie.

    Both videos seems to have missed the point about Aunt May kicking the banker. She mentions that she’s been giving piano lessons again to try and get the loan, she clearly hasn’t hence Peter’s surprised response - “you have?!” The joke is that she’s supposed to kick Peter, so he’d be quiet and not give the game away but she accidentally kicks the banker.

      Her arc, especially in the first movie, is actually REALLY good. The whole movie is her latching onto guys that treat her poorly in different ways: first Flash just sees her as an object, Harry sees her as a way to make his father proud, and Spider-Man... is some guy she doesn't really know but finds exciting.
      Then there's Peter supporting her all the while, slowly realizing that she's more than the girl next door. He's the only person in the movie that tells her her dreams are valid- this clearly shocks MJ after a lifetime of demeaning- and he's invested in her career.
      Finally, at the end of the film, when she's about to die on the bridge, she realizes it's not Harry or even Spider-Man that matters most to her but Peter Parker... and Peter is finally mature enough to deny himself a relationship with her for her protection. And all this perfectly sets up great arcs in the sequel.
      I mean, come on. That's brilliant drama.

    Am I the only one who shed some tears in Spider-Man 2 when Aunt May insisted on Peter keeping that $20 on his birthday? The music kicks in while Aunt May vents on about Uncle Ben and that he deserves that money. Peter starts to shed a tear while having that blank face look like he is staring into abyss, this scene alone is so powerful. The whole Uncle Ben story.. the fact Peter is so selfless despite being behind on rent, losing his job, failing school, and the burdens of making his loved ones around him happy. Harry, because he takes pics of Spidey and then MJ because he preaches how much he wants to be there for her but he never can be.. Tobey makes me feel for him like no other Spider-Man has before. I am 21 now, he was my childhood Spidey growing up and I can not wait to eventually show my future kids this Spider-Man. Thank you Tobey Maguire..

    • @HungryTacoBoy
      @HungryTacoBoy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      Exactly. People complained that he wasn't enough like the "Peter Parker/Spider-Man" of the comics but what I think the films did amazingly well was create a Peter Parker/Spider-Man that was three dimensional and highly relatable; he felt like a real person, unlike many other comic book movies. His strained relationships with those around him and his life struggles make his heroism all the more impressive since he's still heroic even when his life is in shambles.
      That's something sorely missing from Spider-Man: Homecoming, where Peter doesn't feel as fleshed out, Peter makes many poor choices but very few negative consequences arise because of those choices - which is completely antithetical to the theme of "with great power comes great responsibility", it doesn't feel like characters could actually die or are in danger, and Peter is rather immature.

As much hate tobey gets for his crying, he made that scene so much more powerful. My Opinion on the trilogy.
    Spider-Man: An awesome film, and it's reputation was helped by the fact there was a brand new CGI movie based off everyone's favourite web slinger.
    Spider-Man 2: Great emotion, arcs, an amazing film. The best of the 3.
    Spider-Man 3: Boring in some parts, but I liked the tone it gave off, it got darker, like a person growing up discovers darker things. Some weak scenes, but great never the less.

      Spider-Man 3 didn't really kill the franchise, in fact it was the most successful of the trilogy in terms of earnings (which is really the only thing that matters to getting a sequel). Raimi just couldn't agree with the studio for Spider-Man 4 ideas, and was tired of Spider-Man since he had basically been doing it for 7 years at that point. So he ended up leaving.

    Spider-Man 1 is amazing, Spider-Man 2 is a masterpiece, and Spider-Man 3 is at least a lot of fun and highly entertaining. I think the trilogy is rather solid. They're a lot better than Amazing Spider-Man 1 or 2 for sure.
    Edit: I just finished rewatching both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, and I've gotta reiterate: Spider-Man 2 is phenomenal. Everything about it is so good. All of the internal and external conflict just keeps building and building, and it finally climaxes with the train sequence. Mmmmm... It's so good. The theme of "trying your best, but to no avail" is captured so perfectly and it's painfully accurate. The stakes are much higher than before and the few action scenes present are a sight to behold.
    Spider-Man is still amazing, though I have noticed a few glaring problems upon rewatching it. A lot of it has to do with the pacing. It creates huge time gaps waaaayyyyy too often. Like, one scene, they graduate from high school, and the next, Peter's already fired from a job we didn't even know he had and he's in college. It's so weird. The other thing that stuck out to me as problematic are how some shots are lazily layered over each other, most notably when Peter is looking through the newspaper and a huge opeque jpeg of a car comes zooming towards the screen. I couldn't help but laugh at how bad it was.
    Other than that, I still love it. The CGI, while noticable, is impressive for 2002, it's full of great one liners, it embraces the campiness, and I relate to Peter's awkwardness on a spiritual level. Tobey is such a good Peter Parker.

      It all comes down to the ones who are always ass kissing the MCU and completely ignoring the flaws all the movies have, it was great back on 2008 with Iron Man 1 and Hulk, then everything else just became crappy comedy movies with some action slapped on them.
      Infinity War was the only one that really impressed me, thanks to the Russos, but besides that, it's all just unfunny comedy and lackluster action with Spidey always getting his ass kicked (Homecoming), how could you praise that huge unfunny mess and say it's "accurate to the comics"? @@gooseofwar5711 not really.
      The reason the film has heart is because Peter Parker/Spider-Man seems like a believable high school kid who struggles to balance out his everyday life stuff while also being the ''friendly neighborhood'' Spider-Man. The film establishes the relationship with Tony Stark, wanting to impress his school crush and the conflict with the Vulture, particularly the scene where the twist happens and the conversation in the car happens.
      The reason the scene works is not only because Spider-Man lifts all of that rumble, but also because he seems like a kid who is genuinely afraid and cries out for help but when he hears echoes of what Tony Stark told to him, he understands how with great power comes great responsibility and lifts all of that rumble.
      He messes up a lot of the time throughout the film, particularly in the boat scene where he nearly messed it up and in the end he does make up for those shortcomings by doing at last one thing right by stopping Vulture.
      While Sam Raimi's Spider Man films are brilliant, but i feel that Homecoming deserves credit for where it's due.
      Not sure how Homecoming does ''not have heart''.

    What I've always loved about Sam Raimi's Spider-Man is that you can tell they are clearly Sam Raimi movies. His style is all over them. Let me explain: Raimi got his start as a director in horror with The Evil Dead movies. The general audience may not know this, so Raimi intentionally snuck in a sequence or two in each movie that has a bit of a horror vibe to it. The first one had the lab scene with Norman Osborn and his lab assistant. The second one has the infamous hospital scene where Doc Ock kills the doctors and nurses. And the third one had a bunch of them, but 2 in particular. One where Peter is trying to remove the symbiote on the church tower and the other one where Venom stalks Peter in the construction site. Raimi used his background in horror to help him make these movies great. Even the premise of a boy being bitten by radioactive spider and getting the powers of one is very terrifying in a realistic setting. He used some horror with a silly comic book tone and he made it work. He even did this in his most recent movie, Oz the Great and Powerful, with the sequence where Theodora becomes The Wicked Witch of the West.

    I think the scene where Peter confessed to Aunt May was very powerful. She was hurt and she felt betrayed, not just by any regular guy but by her own family. She needed time to process all that pain. But in the next scene where they see each other again, Aunt May had time to recover and have a better look at things from a higher perspective, that's why she didn't want Parker to feel any shame or negative emotions when she referred to the incident, she simply brushed it aside and trying to give the impression that Peter's actions were irrelevant to Ben's death. Aunt May was my hero in this scene, she took all the pain for Peter.

    • @princess_shell
      @princess_shell 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Yes, Aunt May's reaction to Peter's confession made sense because she had blamed herself all those years for the death of her own husband. When Peter confessed about his lie, & how he could've stopped the man who killed her husband, she was in utter shock & speechless. That whole scene always hit me right in the feels.
      & when she sees Peter again it's a heartwarming moment how she showed him grace & unconditional love by forgiving him. You can see how her character was now at peace, & able to move on with her life...even by letting go of her own home & ready to move ahead. She even acknowledged Peter's courage for telling her the truth & being honest with her. ❤ It's a beautiful moment. Aunt May is such a strong gracious woman.

    One thing I would like to point out is that most of the "goofy" scenes are when peter is engaged in a full on superhero battle. You know...when the movie becomes most like a superhero comic book? Otherwise when we get scenes like peter confessing his role in uncle ben's death to aunt may it's all treated very seriously and played with genuine emotion. Raimi knows that the most ridiculous and unbelievable aspects of the Spider-Man mythos are when he is fighting super villains in a red and blue body stocking. He doesnt try to shy away from the last inherent ridiculousness. Instead he makes it his mission to develop the characters and make their personal struggles feel authentic and relatable so that it is easier to buy it when the crazy fantasy battles happen.

      when raimi SM1 first released they mentioned prioritizing their vfx budget on getting the weird "comic book" styled web swinging to look right, as their initial attempts were too realistic like a real guy playing tarzan in NYC and they had no desire to make a movie that could be mistaken as taking queues from xmen. as part of the stylistic decision they changed both the proportions and motions of spiderman during swing scenes and while it did end up looking "more fake" it also looked "so much better" than what they experienced when using anatomically accurate swinging spidey CGI. The fact that people use this as a way to call the CGI "dated even for it's time" just shows you how stupid the average person is.
      This "style over photo-realism" aesthetic is also consistent with the other "comic book" styled effects in the movies, like the many scene wipes that are basically raimi-styled homage to comic book panels (goblin scene wipe to graduation scene using caps as the wipe mechanism is a good example) or the obviously wobbly goblin glider against an obvious green screen background which is also a raimi-styled homage to comic book wiggle lines. And when people complain that the spiderman/goblin/balloon scene is basically a giant cartoon I have to just shake my head because that is quite literally the first time we had a GOOD (joel shumacher batman movies aren't good) colorful daytime superhero fight that properly mixed cinematic motion with comic book color and style. that specific scene from the very first long-distance shot of the approaching glider all the way to spidey leaving MJ safely in a park is the precursor to every great MCU movie we have so it seems oddly insane to criticize it for not being photo-realistic enough.

    The reason why I love the Raimi trilogy is because those movies convey Peter as a person more than a hero and it makes him more relatable. I just really like how Peter is constantly given reasons NOT to fight for humanity but he just won't allow himself to be corrupted even in his weakest moments. He's also a self made hero (he doesn't make gadgets or anything but he learns more about himself throughout the films that in turn make him a stronger person).
    I don't like MCU Peter since he lacks what I mentioned above. Stark provides all his gadgets and the movie had a "disney channel" tone to it that I don't appreciate that much. But hey, I'm not saying it's bad or anything. I just don't prefer it.

It feels as if Spider-Man now relies on iron man to be a complete character and if you say he not there in far from home that’s not what I mean, in far from home he’s still very much “there” and peter even makes his suit with iron mans technology listening to AC/DC. Dude, yes! I'm surprised when people say they dislike the Raimi trilogy. I always point out that they laid the groundwork for the tone and humor of modern Marvel movies. And most importantly, modern Marvel movies are so cookie-cutter and slightly cynical. I do love the modern Marvel movies, but they don't really believe in the drama of their own stories. They have sweet/meaningful moments, but then they immediately undercut those moments with comedy as if they want to wink at people who don't like sweet/dramatic/tender moments. They never just linger on those moments.
    I will never forget that line from May in Spider-Man 2 where she talks about how heroes give up the things they want the most, even their dreams, and that is what gives the rest of us our dignity to live and our courage to die when our time comes. Like... Jesus... that was such a good line and I know they'd never put something like that in a modern Marvel movie.
    Spider-Man 2 is the best super-hero movie ever made and (at this rate where directors have less control) probably will ever be made.

    Why is everyone saying the "Did your husband make that for you?" joke is dated?
    How? The joke had nothing to do with Spider-Man making fun of gays. Bonesaw was supposed to be a Alpha-male Macho Man Muscle-monster and Spider-Man was basically saying he was a woman/emasculating him by saying he seemed like a housewife in his eyes. If the problem was a "same-sex marriage" thing, I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with that. If the problem is being called a woman is supposed to be offensive, that isn't demoralizing TO women. He's demoralizing someone who is CLEARLY NOT A WOMAN which is the joke. Like calling someone a scaredy cat, you don't have to hate cats to call someone that. -.-
    I fail to see how that's dated. THAT is a nitpick that bugs the crap outta me, because I still think it's funny. Not hilarious, but it puts a smile on my face.

    • @GuruR97
      @GuruR97 6 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      I think you missed the mark. It was not meant to make him seem like a woman. Because in real life, the saying usually goes "Aw, did your mom/wife make that for you." Peter added another layer on this by making him seem gay. And this isn't really a nitpick, because I picked up on that line on a re-watch a year or two ago and thought "Damn that doesn't belong in this year." I still think it's funny, but in a 2000's lens.

    • @aaaazzzzable
      @aaaazzzzable 6 ปีที่แล้ว +138

      @@GuruR97 I think it's the other way around, but it isn't really your fault. It's the 2018 lens that's distorting the joke because there is nothing wrong with the joke. This a time where people actively seek anything that is even the tiniest bit offensive. Even if said thing has to be taken out of context or mistaken to be considered offensive (i.e. PC Culture). That's just our natural mindset for the past several years now, "Seek and Destory".
      So that is why I explained in detail why that isn't the case. Yes, he could have said "Did mommy get that for you", you could have inserted several different versions of that joke. Sam/The writers went with that one because, until 2014 it was nothing more than a mere playground jest not a homophobic or sexist hate statement like we claim it is now. The only 2000s lens, in this case, is the implification that men marry women (which is still nothing to get offended over, nothing wrong with heterosexual marriage). Therefore, Spider-Man implies he is the woman [in the relationship] which circles back to my original comment on why even THAT isn't offensive.

    Because it's so simple it's there's no crazy acrobatics or insane superhuman style of stuff it's just them using some type of martial arts against each other beating the s*** out of each other throwing them into brick and glass and throwing grenades.
    It's a short fight but it just shows nothing has to be over elaborate in a final fight between the Big Baddy and your hero it can be simply in a small area.

    Mary Jane is absolutely a terrible person in these films and the worst part is definitely in 2 where she leaves her husband on the altar on their wedding day without a word and just runs to some other guy. The only reason this is seen as a good thing is because Peter acts as a surrogate for the audience. John Jameson is never even portrayed as being a bad guy.

      Well obviously we cant call him wrong. These are all his opinions. I grew up on the Raimi trilogy too, and really liked Toby as spiderman at the time. But I gotta say in comparison I think Tom Holland is the definitive Peter Parker AND Spiderman. Willem Dafriend was a good Norman but it was a little over acted (which might be on the director), Alfred IS Doc Ock and I cant really picture someone else taking that from him, Franco was kind of just an ok Harry, Kirsten Dunst is a good fit for MJ but she's a terribly written plot device, there has possibly never been a worse casting than Topher Grace as Venom. That one old dude is still MY Uncle Ben and not to mention BONESAW IS REEEAAADDYYY!!!! But I absolutely love Homecoming and I think it is the best Spiderman film made so far. But all those are my opinions. You can try to tell me I'm wrong but it wouldn't make sense lol. Cuz we are not speaking in fact. So you would just be disagreeing with me. Which is totally fine. I still have the Raimi trilogy on DVD and like to pop it in every once in a while (and yes I watch all 3 when I do, and I don't skip past P-Emo Parker). So I can understand why people like it, why people like it more, and why people don't like it. Cuz its subjective.
