This is the very reason why I preferLemonRX 7ch for planes like this. They are much easier to set up and the flaperon setting is just a dip switch setting. Its just easier for me and I prefer no computer programming needed. I have set up several of the Lemons on the fly at the field with outstanding results. I think that I will get another one one of these and fiddle with a LemonRX to get it to my liking. Also nice to see you trying all these different methods to slow it down! Not a damn thing wrong with experimenting to see what works best for you! Thanks for sharing! Also you have a package that was delivered today according to my tracking info😜😜😜
I love Lemon Rx too. It's my Go-To when I'm doing PNF, but like with the Boeing 737 Max 9, I had this $100 Rx, and I couldn't stand to let it sit idle. It's a GREAT piece of equipment, but WOW is it over complicated...but is there really such a thing as having too many features??? LOL As for the package delivery, I didn't see anything yet...we'll check the mailbox ;) Looking forward to getting into it!!!
I love both ;) Wish the AR636 was a bit easier....but knowing that they can be rolled back to "non-Safe" firmware, is promising, as that will unlock a simple setting for flapperons.
Romano Seven spektrums work fine! Just too complicated for me to set up. They are set up as default to use the dial on the radio as master gain too. And can be switched off!!
Brian, I did this air brake mode on my eflite f16 thunderbird 70mm and wow it really worked good! I'm amazed at how much shorter my landing approach was!😝😎👍💯thanks for teaching me this pro trick! Now i dont need flaps! I managed to contour the air brakes so they fit flush against the f16's belly and are scoop shaped when open! Very nice
Hello Brian and Mrs Megan aka camera crew. The master of mods strikes again lol. Well done as always. Thanks camera crew aka Mrs.Megan. Just having fun RC'n with friends and family members
Man that jet is sexy, sounds really nice! Nice flight. Thank you for doing what you do with the RC stuff! And you can't even see the upgrades you did, airbreak worked really nice! ☠ SEMPER Fi 🇺🇸🐾🐾🐾
Mrs Philips camera crew, you must have the patience of a saint, your other half is crazy, my departed wife once mentioned that she felt for you as she married a clone of you meaning me, cant leave things stock out the box, I run 5th scale gas mostly but do have the TRAXXAS UDR & a knock off copy of LOSI's Super Baja Rey it is actually better than the LOSI yes I had both, looking to get the Rock Rey if I can find a reasonable condition used one, I was hoping a buggy would be made by the company that made the truck copy, as prices of the LOSI vehicles is getting more and more expensive, the only things still stock are my XK X450 Aviator and my JJRC M02 VTOL, only because still not had a heavy landing yet so no breakages yep surprised me, but looking to FPV one also run a Wi Fi camera to record from on one of the VTOL's. Thanks for your content always put's a smile on my face, and don't be so cruel, showing the very nice meal your wife prepared and cooked for you, as I am now a widower, my menu and standard of my meals has hit rock bottom, so yes I had not eaten when you showed your meal, please put a warning up so I can skip passed the food you will be served, cheers.
Nick - I'm sorry for your loss! We hope that we can bring you a smile, and possibly you will be able to copy this delicious platter. It would scale to a single serving well, actually... We're glad you're here with us, and appreciate you kind words!
good afternoon Brian this and very very very very beautiful but very very difficult to drive has little support has to land faster but congratulations my friend continue to cheer us up and thrilling with your beautiful work a big hug.
You can also attach a clear piece of plastic in the front openning of the nose gear bay with a 90 degree bend and it would be flush with the underside of the jet when the gear is sucked in its hollow openning
Brian, you CAN roll back the firmware to change the 636a to non-safe "open stock." I had been having a similar conversation with Horizon support when trying to get flaperons on my Conscendo Advanced. I wonder if you could set up crow braking that you could fiip on once the wheels are on the ground? Anything to avoid rolling off! I watched two guys snap their nosewheels in one day doing that.
No crow on this plane, since only one aileron on each wing ;) I did have an idea to setup leading edge flaps (or slats). I'm mostly concerned with the additional flight envelope. I'd like to fiddle with flaps while flying for different maneuvers, and I think it would be REALLY cool.
Sometimes I’ll use safe when I launch a plane on its maiden . Once it’s in the air I turn it off and make my trim adjustments. Also a bad habit to get into using safe on landings !
I did watch his stuff ;) He's very helpful....unfortunately, what I NEEDED to do was ROLL BACK the firmware to non-safe version, so I could just turn on FLAPPERONS. It would have been a lot simple, but didn't realize at first how to do it.
very cool that you can fly in your front yard,.. I just got my eflite F-16 waiting to maiden this weekend if it doesnt rain.. I have 6s 4000 60C pack weighs in at 610g . I noticed you placed the 3200 & 4000 pack all the way back against that ledge . is the CG basically the same with either pack? im using 90-100mm for the CG? waiting for a response
I want to fly the plane with batteries as far back as possible to help with high alpha. I will be trying one more modification to help with this, but video isn't published yet....not filmed either...so might be a bit. Start with you battery all the way back into the Rx.

I fixed the mis-spelling. Thanks for the heads up. I had another guy (or you) earlier this week ask about it, and I totally missed the point, in the comment...yours got my attention. Thanks!
I've ENDED up in grass - LOL ;) As for the mod in grass, probably not necessary, and would more than likely get ripped off in the grass, I suspect (if that was where you were going with the question). This plane will do neatly manicured grass, but it's gotta be fairly short.
yes, 100%...but you don't need the 8 channel to do AVIAN ESC...it would be supported on the AR631 even...but if you want all sort of crazy setup like we did here, YEAH, better go with the AR8360T bit.ly/3crfA6H
This is awesome! Love the creativity. And it seems that the plane is a bit more noisy? (in a good way) It worked better than the flapperons. Well done!
Brian do you know if the original umx timber has tape hinges or not? My rudder is very loose and can not see how to fix it. Thank you for your videos and help!
Most all UMX planes have pinched foam hinges with tape reinforcement. You can just use a piece of tape. Make sure you pinch the tape TIGHT TO THE SEAM, so that it doesn't bind up the rudder movement. It's easy, don't worry...it will work :)
you should do a stabilator mod, full moving horizontal tail surface would be amazing. course with the current elevator the pitch rate is pretty impressive, but still...
@Brian, I really think you misunderstand the word break, versus brake. Aircraft use additional surfaces or features to "get dirty": to slow the vehicle the same way the brakes on your car. These are air brakes NOT breaks. I was not using a play on words as you suggested, it was correcting your use of air breaks. True, the surfaces that deploy to slow the aircraft do "break" the airflow, but they are called air brakes non the less.
Looks like the landing gear air brakes work better than the flaperons did. I have a feeling that you are not finished modifying this one. Fun times abound. And your camera crew continues to amaze me with her recording talent.
Thanks! I agree, she's good. As for your assessment, YES, these worked better, and simple solution. I STILL long for leading edge slats, and I bet I could have her flying at 10 MPH in rock solid high alpha, but I'm just too busy right now to tear up a perfectly awesome plane.
Oh hell i'm getting an EDF and never flown a plane. i'm sure i'm going to crash it up. Been flying fpv quads for 5 years. Going to get the 70mm Viper or the 64mm A-10 and put a Caddix Vista in it for my DJI goggles. TRIAL BY FIRE! Yolo and all that shit the kids say! Figure a few hours in the simulator beforehand will help, and FPV is easier then LOS anyway.
I genuinely hope you’re successful. I’ve only been flying models for 9 months. I’ve actually had a UMX Mig EDF and a 1.7 HK Cherokee for a few months and still haven’t flown them yet because I’d like to land them more than once. I’ve also been flying quads since 2015. Brian and the camera crew are actually to blame for my addiction to model planes... and the fact that I now literally have an entire room and many other sections of my home filled with models, parts, batteries, and foam trash that “would make good landing gear”. They make it look so easy and super fun. He’s done the work to make it look easy. It isn’t easy for me yet but it is an incredibly fun and rewarding hobby. Best of luck with that EDF! It would probably make a great video series on your channel. I wish I had the confidence to share my experience on YT if only for other newbies to get an idea of what to expect and what their homes will look like in short order once they’re hooked.
Make sure you have a LOT of room. If you fly quads, you CAN fly a plane, but keep in mind, you CAN'T just stop ;) If you want to start slow, you will be more likely to keep flying fixed wing. I love your enthusiasm, BTW!!! Apprentice 1.5m RTF bit.ly/2CfTCBY (perfect for you, then you can work on the jets????)
Clever but I don’t think anyone who flies this at a normal field needs to slow down as much as you do, the people who manufacture for E-Flite (I’ve heard it’s ST models among others) have actually designed this very well for controllable slow flight and good approach handling. That said what I did was incorporate droops that go from reflexed to 25 deg drooped and it’s like a STOL jet - oh and I DONT fly Spektrum or SAFE which makes it much better too.
Hi Brian thanks for such great informitive Videos and your camara crew for doing an excellet job of filming I wonder if you have some suggestions of how to repair control horn fixings .i picked up a used Fms 1700mm F4u Corsair and the previous owner had over tightened the fixings squishing the foam ! Maybe just glue them, and try to squeeze them a bit more??? OR take them out, and put in a larger piece of plastic backing top and bottom....or another piece of foam, scrap from a dead plane???

Yeah for a great while I got stuck on flying on safe all the time. It was hard to get out and build up my confidence.
There's ZERO shame in it, but at some point you will want to be free of it ;)

Yeah, without the tip, it's so much harder to ram it in!!!!
Damnnn that airbreak oooooo thats hot
It worked well ;)
It’s also an air brake as you’re taking off too!
yes
That’s a pretty cool mod
It was an unusually simple BrianPhillipsRC mod ;)
Sometimes I’ll use safe when I launch a plane on its maiden . Once it’s in the air I turn it off and make my trim adjustments. Also a bad habit to get into using safe on landings !
I don't hardly use SAFE anymore...I feel out of control...but I needed it at first, and it was invaluable.
When it comes to Spektrum programming give RC Air Marshall (his TH-cam channel) a shout he can get you strait
I did watch his stuff ;) He's very helpful....unfortunately, what I NEEDED to do was ROLL BACK the firmware to non-safe version, so I could just turn on FLAPPERONS. It would have been a lot simple, but didn't realize at first how to do it.

I’m confident that it’s spelled air “brake”, as in a thing to slow the craft.
Jeeze, I can't believe I missed that!!!!!!! Super embarrassing! I'll fix it all ;)
I fixed the mis-spelling. Thanks for the heads up. I had another guy (or you) earlier this week ask about it, and I totally missed the point, in the comment...yours got my attention. Thanks!
Brian Phillips I was a consistent spelling champ in school. It’s a curse that just keeps on giving.
Best recycling I have seen. Good idea. You tried to land on grass at all?
I've ENDED up in grass - LOL ;)
As for the mod in grass, probably not necessary, and would more than likely get ripped off in the grass, I suspect (if that was where you were going with the question).
This plane will do neatly manicured grass, but it's gotta be fairly short.
So if in have the fancy 8 channel reciever plus the 1080 Avian, I should definitely be able to get reverse thrust hooked up eh?

I'm not sure I caught the noise...
@@BrianPhillipsRC Hmm, I could be wrong, I felt like it made more "air rushing" noise when it flu by, nonetheless, the reducing speed is remarkable.

you should do a stabilator mod, full moving horizontal tail surface would be amazing. course with the current elevator the pitch rate is pretty impressive, but still...
I think the same thing. It would be cool looking, but maybe a bit impractical.
When I land, I will just hold the elevator stick down all the way and hold it there the whole way down. It slows it dow nicely.
Are you landing in SAFE?
Who wants a plane that BREAKS in the air? Mind you, having Air BRAKES to slow it down would be useful.
I think I understand your play on words... Full scale planes use breaks in the air all the time ;)
Brian Phillips no, they use "air brakes".
The su-30 does :)

Maybe it would be possible to reverse the ducted fan, to slow down when on the ground.
You can only do that with a Reversing ESC. The newest SMART ESC's will do it, but they're very expensive.
😮🤔🙂
I agree ;) LOL
High alpha landings was the only way I could land at the proper speed on this plane
These breaks help a lot, but still pretty much landing with high alpha.

This is a 70mm EDF
@@BrianPhillipsRC thank bro. You have great ideas on some easily formulated tips. Thank you

What’s easier to fly, this f16 or eflite’s a10
A10
So I guess flaps aren’t enough?
The flapperons were just not effective for this application. I still have an idea or two, but so far this has been quite effective!
Question Mr Brian have you ever flown the F 15 Eagle just wondering Thank you keep the vids coming really enjoy the from Ohio
Not yet!
U need to kill the power sooner and come in lower closer to the trees but and high alpha it about 20% throttle with the nose as high as u can hold it
It's a tight squeeze. If you were here, I'd like to watch you do it a few times.... did you see my recent Vampire video???
Brian, I would like to ask you, I really like HONDA JET, would you be able to present one to us on your project?

What?
Brian Phillips you keep spelling air brakes wrong... minor thing, but looks silly on a video title.
