    This video talks about how speed affects various fighting games.
    Brawlhalla is a free-to-play 2D platformer fighting game developed by Blue Mammoth Games and Ubisoft for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Steam, iOS, and Android, with full cross-play across all platforms. It also has some of the most satisfying combo mechanics of any fighting game I've played, because doing successful low damage to kill combos is extremely hard. You have to either 100% know where your opponent is going or just make up some wacky play and hope for the best. It makes the kills all the more exciting. Brawlhalla has reached OVER 1 million in esports prize pools this year and over 50 million online players in total.
    Guilty Gear Strive is a fighting video game developed and published by Arc System Works. It is the seventh mainline installment of the Guilty Gear series and the 25th overall. The game was released worldwide on June 11, 2021. It uses Unreal Engine 4. Intended as a "complete reconstruction of the franchise", Guilty Gear Strive retains the core essence of the series but revamps many features and mechanics, except for the removal of the series’ signature mechanic, the Instant Kill. It introduces the "Wall Break" feature, which allows for stage transitions when a combo is initiated in the corner of the arena. Guilty Gear Strive was released for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Microsoft Windows on June 11, 2021. It was also distributed via Sega to Japanese arcades on July 29, 2021. "Limited Edition" and "Ultimate Edition" editions were made available for pre-order; console players who get the latter received early access to the full game on June 8, 2021. The cross-platform play was only supported between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions at launch. Cross-play with the Windows version is set to be added as an update alongside Season Pass 2. Ver. 1.05 added Korean voices, marking the 3rd game in the franchise to have a Korean dub, alongside Guilty Gear X Plus and Guilty Gear X2 #Reload.
    Street Fighter V is a fighting game developed by Capcom and Dimps and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows in 2016. Similar to the previous games in the Street Fighter series, Street Fighter V features a side-scrolling fighting gameplay system. The game also introduces the "V-Gauge", which builds as the player receives attacks and adds three new skills. The game features 16 characters at launch, with four of them being new to the series. A story mode and 30 additional characters were added through updates and downloadable content.

    Being 8 minuted in Brawlhalla kinda killed my enjoyment in the game lmao I still play it but I've turned my more competitive focus to Tekken instead. Speed is exactly why some people hate zoners, needing to play according to the other players pace that they want is annoying and you’ll rarely feel like you’re in control. Speed also makes grapples more balanced (most of the time) since if they were speedy like a rush down character, you’d be grabbed endlessly. Speed is both cool and wack

    • @javianbrown8627
      @javianbrown8627 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's fair. I feel like zoners hate some rush down characters just as much though as the fast movement rushdowns have means if you make a single mistake they get close and start their strike throw bullshit. What's weird though is I like both playstyles as I play mostly Karin and Poison in SF5 and in Guilty gear I play Millia and Testement.

  • @jerrellh4173

    I like longer games as opposed to slower. For instance DBFZ is fast paced and big damage, but you’ve got 3 health bars to go through with regenerative health. It makes the game a chess match of reads, adaptation, and strategy which is the fun part for me. I also dislike supers where there’s a cutscene and a bunch of damage taken off. It takes away from the actual “combat” in my opinion.

    • @GMP1isReal
      @GMP1isReal ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I don't mind supers because of how well it shows the spectacle of Dragon Ball while being a reference to something iconic, and the big damage of them are usually scaled, so it's not the end-all-be-all if you're hit by one (especially with the ways to regen that life).
      Another way to think about it is a moment to think (even if you're on the receiving end) in how fast pace the game is, and the cutscenes aren't really that long compared to optimal combos or how you play neutral.

    • @jerrellh4173
      @jerrellh4173 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@GMP1isReal that’s true actually I agree it does provide some pacing.
      I feel like the damage was done right in budokai for example, You had to really earn the damage in your super, and the cutscenes were interactive. It was more fun and more rewarding. How it is in dbfz def isn’t bad, mainly because you have to go through a 3-man team to win. More of a problem in single fighter games imo.
      Also I just hate the feel of some of them lol. Ss4 Gogeta lvl 1 and janemba’s slicy level 1, nappa’s lvl 1 for example, SSb Gogeta lvl 3 (lvl 5 is sick tho). Whereas I like all of hit’s supers. that might just be personal preference tho.
      I agree on spectacle and references, spirit Bomb, cell lvl 3, kid buu lvl 3, evil containment wave among others, They’re awesome every time.

    I honestly like both fast paced fighting games like DBFZ and slow paced ones like For Honor (idk if you'd count that as a fighting game, but I do). I always find it amazing when seeing people do flashy combos and strings that last a long while. And I like the latter because slow paced games tend to have higher damage output wich makes the game full of focus and commitment. One wrong move could cost you, and the entire match always makes me sweat trying to predict who is going to get a hit on who

    Very good video! That said, I have a slight correction: you mentioned (or implied?) how Strive, as opposed to SF5, wants you to move fast and gets there partly by making a lot of moves plus on block. To my knowledge the vast majority of moves in Strive are actually negative on block, while in SF5 the opposite is true, at least for normals

I've never play a platform fight that isn't Smash. SF4 has a formula for it's cancel system. Once you know it, you can use it. Normals (stick direction + button) cancel into specials (stick motion + button(s)) cancel into supers (double stick motion + button). Even with L canceled, Melee is a much easier game to learn compare to regular fighting games. Every Smash character has the same controls but usually everyone in regular fighting games has their own command list. Every character in Melty Blood Type Lumina has the same commands, which helps make the game easier to learn but at the cost of making characters feel the same

    6:44 guilty gear does want you to play more aggressively but that's not because a lot of moves are plus:
    1) the game has a much much different pace compared to Street Fighter
    2) you can block in air as well that makes aproaching from air easier but there is also a universal anti air so you don't really want to jump constantly
    3) the game literally punishes you if you play like a turtle(too much defense) you get meter penalty etc. also offense in this game is rewarded with positive bonus etc etc
    in conclusion: Just take the throw.

    This might be the first or the only capcom game that movement speed matter alot for both defense and offense.

    5:25 in Brawlhalla there was a time when Dexterity was a broken statistic, allowing gauntlets, bow and I think also katars at their release to do insane combos. Game was also slow then.
    Changes towards Dexterity killed the stat completely in a way that no one played a character with high dexterity only when a character had overtuned weapon buff.
    At the moment BMG tries to add fixed and variable frames allowing dexterity to be more useful, also game doesn't get patched like before, because only thing to balance now are signature moves. Yet adding new weapons just makes the game horribly balanced (talking about scythe, greatsword, boots (they are outstanding weapons from the ones already existing))

    Personally I enjoy slower style fighting games only because I absolutely suck at them so in order for me to actually function in one of those games I need everything slowed down to my reaction speed since I can at least perceive what's going on
    I remember for a short while I had this one fighting game called Godzilla Omniverse and because the device I had it on was slow I could not only barely match the fighting speed of the game but I only ever had one enemy that I had trouble against
    At first I didn't even know the game was running slow just cuz there were giant monsters I just thought that that's how the game normally ran
    Boy it was a huge blow to my already non-existent fighting game ego to realize that I was basically on easy mode and was still struggling

    As a guilty gear player trying out the sf6 beta, they feel like they're worlds apart. Guilty gear is all about going absolutely berserk on your opponent from just the slightest mistake, as those will usually net you 70% of the enemy's bar if you know what you're doing. Street fighter 6 though, feels very much like a game of chess. Every move can be countered or played against with a bit of reading and thought, no matter the situation (I compare this to happy chaos from guilty gear, as I myself play hc). I am very hyped for sf6 release.

    I definitely prefer whatever pace street fighter is on. Fighterz is fun but too many tod combos and too many busted dlc characters. Most of the players only play meta too and going against 3 goku characters or two and a broly is extremely unfun when its 9/10 games. More so fun with friends and people of your skill

    Yes there is something I very much disagree with but it doesn't really change anything.
    It's your reasoning why GG is more aggressive than SF. The frame data. You say look at how many plus moves there are in GG but have you seen the frame data for both games? I dare to say that SF has way more plus on block situations than GG. Instead it is the movement options that make GG more aggressive. You can get in without having to worry to get dunked on... Well not completely without worry but you get what I mean
