This video talks about various taunts in fighting games.
Brawlhalla is a free-to-play 2D platformer fighting game developed by Blue Mammoth Games and Ubisoft for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Steam, iOS, and Android, with full cross-play across all platforms. It also has some of the most satisfying combo mechanics of any fighting game I've played, because doing successful low damage to kill combos is extremely hard. You have to either 100% know where your opponent is going or just make up some wacky play and hope for the best. It makes the kills all the more exciting. Brawlhalla has reached OVER 1 million in esports prize pools this year and over 50 million online players in total.
Guilty Gear Strive is a fighting video game developed and published by Arc System Works. It is the seventh mainline installment of the Guilty Gear series and the 25th overall. The game was released worldwide on June 11, 2021. It uses Unreal Engine 4. Intended as a "complete reconstruction of the franchise", Guilty Gear Strive retains the core essence of the series but revamps many features and mechanics, except for the removal of the series’ signature mechanic, the Instant Kill. It introduces the "Wall Break" feature, which allows for stage transitions when a combo is initiated in the corner of the arena. Guilty Gear Strive was released for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Microsoft Windows on June 11, 2021. It was also distributed via Sega to Japanese arcades on July 29, 2021. "Limited Edition" and "Ultimate Edition" editions were made available for pre-order; console players who get the latter received early access to the full game on June 8, 2021. The cross-platform play was only supported between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions at launch. Cross-play with the Windows version is set to be added as an update alongside Season Pass 2. Ver. 1.05 added Korean voices, marking the 3rd game in the franchise to have a Korean dub, alongside Guilty Gear X Plus and Guilty Gear X2 #Reload.
Street Fighter V is a fighting game developed by Capcom and Dimps and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows in 2016. Similar to the previous games in the Street Fighter series, Street Fighter V features a side-scrolling fighting gameplay system. The game also introduces the "V-Gauge", which builds as the player receives attacks and adds three new skills. The game features 16 characters at launch, with four of them being new to the series. A story mode and 30 additional characters were added through updates and downloadable content.
BlazBlue is a fighting video game series developed and published in Japan by Arc System Works and later localized in North America by Aksys Games and in Europe by Zen United.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズX, Great Fray Smash Brothers X), often shortened to "SSBB" or "Brawl" (スマブラX), is the third installment in the Super Smash Bros. series published by Nintendo. The game was designed by Masahiro Sakurai, who also created the two preceding Super Smash Bros. games, and was developed by an ad hoc development team consisting of Sora, Game Arts, and staff from other developers, beginning in October 2005. The game was released on January 31st, 2008 in Japan, March 9th, 2008 in North America, June 26th, 2008 in Australia, and June 27th, 2008 in Europe. Up to four players can engage in local multiplayer battles at any given time with any combination of controllers, while Brawl also supported online play through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the first game in the series to do so. While Brawl continues to include the tournament-like "Classic" and "All-Star" single-player modes, Melee’s Adventure Mode has been replaced with The Subspace Emissary; a much more extensive side-scrolling beat-'em-up mode featuring both the playable characters and many enemies specifically created for the game.
Skullgirls is a 2D fighting game developed by Reverge Labs and published by Autumn Games. In Skullgirls, players fight each other with teams of one, two, or three characters, attempting to knock out their opponents or have the most cumulative health when time runs out. The setting of the game revolves around the "Skull Heart", an artifact which grants wishes for women. If a wisher with an impure soul uses the Skull Heart, she is transformed into a monster known as the "Skullgirl". The game was first released through the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in April 2012, and received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the animation and gameplay mechanics, while criticizing its initial roster size and online multiplayer features.

There's a universal mechanic in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure All Star Battle that if you taunt as your opponent is getting knocked down, they lose meter. This is to emulate the fact that canon fights in Jojo are about guile and mettle as much as they are about physical strength. The character Joseph Joestar has a unique counter to that mechanic. If you predict your opponent is going to taunt, you can taunt back, and the effect will be reversed, granting Joseph Joestar meter and having the opponent lose some. In the manga, Joseph is a clever trickster who has been shown to be able to predict what an opponent will say, and they did a great job translating it into the game.

@@butterfreedom5357 Yes, he can counter taunts. And this is the reason why DLC characters have interactions with Joseph : because they need his VA to record his "The next sentence you'll say is..." taunt-counter taunt, they also get him new lines to say for intros and finishes.

    • @hambor12
      @hambor12 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Notably, there is only one situation where this is not the case. Even though (Young) Joseph can counter-taunt Iggy and Pet Shop (animals) and Baoh (an otherwise nonverbal enhanced alien beast who has his own tacit narrator), he is unable to counter-taunt Wonder of U, the final DLC character and final villain of Part 8.
Joseph does not garner a direct verbal response from Wonder of U for Joseph to predict, resulting in him asking if they even heard him. For gameplay reasons, while no meter is removed from Wonder of U, Joseph receives a full meter of heat gauge for a successful counter taunt instead of gaining half while the opponent loses half.

There's a pretty interesting taunt in Guilty Gear +R with Dizzy where she interacts with her two guardians (Necro and Undyne are their names if memory serves me correctly). If you input a set of buttons in a certain order, it will activate a secret Insta-Kill where Dizzy is covered in a black sillhouette (simillar to when Sol activates his Install in that game) and KOs the opponent if they're close enough. This didnt didnt come back in Xrd, but I wonder if the implications are that she has a Dragon Install like her dad. It's a unique Insta-Kill hidden in a taunt detail. Neat.

    • @vguy8510
      @vguy8510 ปีที่แล้ว +21

oh nah in +R you dont need the taunt but you use it to do the charge input you have to do first for the IK, else you would jump and be unable to finish the motion.
her real taunt tech is it being unblockable so you can use it for some meme setups, but the startup of the taunt depends on her voice set for that match which is rng.

      1) dizzy's instant kill in +r isn't a taunt

6:37 I don't know if anyone else mentioned this, but Terumi's actually not the only one who can do this. Technically the entire cast can cancel their taunts into special moves mid combo, or into supers and Overdrive outside of combos. It's just that Terumi is the most notable example of this since he not only can just fill his meter back up again very quickly after spending it all, but he's also just the biggest piece of shit in fighting game history, so people associate this sort of tech with him since it fits him so well lore wise, because imagine him just stomping your head in, and then all the sudden being like "I'm waiting for you to SUCK LESS!" before caving you in further. That's just peak trolling and I love it.

I’m a big fan of Beowulf’s taunt in Skullgirls, due to it having an additional effect like every other taunt in the game (EX: Big Band’s buffs his lvl 1 supers, Annie’s is a counter, Filia’s having a hitbox, etc.), but by far having the most useful effect.
By using his taunt, Beowulf automatically gets 3 full bars of Hype (his own unique resource mechanic), which gives him access to crazy damage off of grab. Plus it’s super easy to land with a lockdown assist (EX: Big Band’s H. Beat Extend/Take the A-Train, Cerabella’s Excellabella) which gives Beowulf enough time to pop the taunt, and still prepare himself to set up for Oki.

In Jojo All Star Battle there were such a thing as taunt combos. If you managed to down an enemy and shot a projectile at them, you could cancel and immediately taunt, causing them to stand up and be immediately hit by the attack you sent out earlier.
Some characters got crazy huge damage out of it. But it was pretty unique way to get more damage out of your combos, since some characters were already limited in what combos they could do normally. Unfortunately, they would eventually end up patching it out, as it was too broken.

Otherwise, there's minimal application with hurtbox shifting amongst the cast, primarily (once again) Luigi's side taunt, as shown off in Sm4sh's intro dodging some narrower attacks, and Jigglepuff's down taunt which... At that point you may as well just crouch.

Tekken’s Bryan Fury also deserves a mention. It has a short hitbox but is unblockable and guarantees a followup if a move is done immediately after it hits. Without getting into frame data, Bryan has a move that is fast enough to launch the opponent and give a full combo. The taunt is kinda slow and can be interrupted, but the thing is that Bryan can also cancel it by blocking sidestepping, making it a mindgame between you and your opponent. While it is broken, it is balanced by that fact that it is so hard to that that even the best players struggle to do it consistently.

I know Kazuya has much better options at all times but his four hit combo taunt actually kills off the side and connects properly where a lot of his other ground vs ground followups will work.
Not as interesting as Luigi's taunt and it doesn't have any ground invincibility like Ganon's spinning one but still functional as a flex. Like if the 10 Hit Combo actually worked on people who aren't asleep at the wheel.

I personally do like a good taunt that straight up insults the opponent character when you're fighting, 1 example of this is in the new upcoming SF6 where Luke trolls Ryu (or Ken/Akuma) with a HaDoUkEn. it doesn't have any effect in them but I just fine it funny is all.

In Gojira - Kaijuu Daikessen, if you taunt close to your enemy, you can partially fill their feint meter. Considering that if you top out on your feint meter not only will you be knocked to the ground (where you are forced to take some free hits), but you would also lose your Wrath state (a rage state + your ultimate / super). This makes taunting in GKD a deadly tool to punish your opponent.

@@cosmic5665 funnily enough its actually kind of viable in combos, because the trumpets hits actually continue combos decently well but i think it works best for wall combos, i'm not sure though since its been quite a while since i've played skullgirls! best part is that it either fucks your opponent's mental up or make the pair of you burst out laughing, which is a win win scenario :)

Some others I can think of are Taokaka in blazblue, which in the Chronophantasma games does actually have combos using her taunt (not in Central Fiction tho), Yuuki Terumi has a super that IS a taunt, and every character in Skullgirls has at least some use for their taunt.
And while not directly the same, taunts were part of what brought Roman Cancels into Guilty Gear, and by extension Rapid Cancels into Blazblue, and similar concepts in other Arcsys games.
Also in Guilty Gear strive, Jack-o can remove her mask for the rest of the match using her taunt. And in older Guilty Gear games, taunting at the end of a round would give the enemy a massive amount of meter at the start of next round

Hey, Terumi main here. Just wanted to say, if you have all of your meter and your overdrive ready while you’re health is kind of low, Terumi can do some pretty funny stuff with his taunt!
First, start a combo with Serpent’s Laceration (A version). Rapid cancel the second hit, and immediately taunt. The opponent will be locked in hitstun for a very long time.
Then use Cleaving Fang. Make sure you don’t mash the button and get the extended version. Cancel the final kick into overdrive activation.
Next do 4 loops of his jumping down drive and his backwards drive, building meter. Finally use Snakebite. By now you’ll have a full meter bar ready to go, and you can either finish the combo with a powerful super, or if the opponent’s health is low enough, you can finish them off with his Astral Heat. This means that Terumi can use 2 full super bars, taunt you, and use his instant kill all in one combo!

Semi-obscure example: Big Bang Beat 1st Impression has taunts that work like in Third Strike in that they provide buffs of some sort if fully executed, up to three times a match. Then there's Heita Zinnai's. The longest in the cast, and seemingly doing nothing. However, get three in and taunt again, and Heita goes into his super mode, with greatly increased speed and power, for the rest of the match. (Going to need confirmation if those types of taunts carried over into Revolve.)

My favorite taunt is taokaka's cause you can apply it in combo or used to way back when and it was actually really good for combo fodder not because of the damage but just looping it. Another favorite from blazblue is Carl Clovers, because during the taunt the way they set up how you control ADA - the puppet uses 1 button out of the 4 that doesn't command Carl at all its purely just for accessing the puppet's commands. so while taunting . you can input the puppet to do all of its regular command's (Minus supers or distortion drives) because I am pretty sure he poses while giving the puppet the command.

Smash Melee has a weird thing with Yoshi's taunt. The game has a Z axiz for hitboxes even tho the game is played like a 2D platform fighter. In Yoshi's taunt, Yoshi steps up closer to the screen meaning that his head hurtbox isn't in the axis where most of the hitboxes are, meaning that in theory you can dodge some projectiles with the taunt

Has taunts that count as a part of the gameplay mechanic, the taunts buffs characters the attacks and super throw for example if you do super throw without taunt then its a avarega super throw but if you do with taunts the big "SUPER" font appears and that also increased the damaged.
There is one more thing you need to know about Slam Masters 2 taunt, if you get hit during taunt then you get a insta dizzy as punishment.

  • @auroricaura

one thing to note is that the inputs for big band's trumpet is somewhat accurate to the valves on actual trumpet. the only ones that dont work are C and G which are both no valves, but every other note is correct (for the main register of trumpet, because the physics of how the instrument works the interval for no valves gets smaller and smaller hence the next register having different fingering). The way they fit all of them is both E and A are valves 1 and 2, but with big band it's LP + MP for E and LK + MK for A.
It's also great that they made C and G valve 3, because of how the valves open 'portions' of the trumpet. Put in incredibly simple terms, valve 1 opens up one 'measurement' of air. valve 2 opens half a measurement. Valve 3 opens up roughly one and a half, but the sound for notes that use one and a half measurements are better when you press down valves 1 and 2. Which is why both E and A *can* be played with valve 3 but it's typically frowned upon.
Apologies if I got explained anything weird or messed up something, it's been a while since I seriously took trumpet lessons where the mechanics of the instrument were involved.
