So, what you're saying is that if you collect the Green Star you are softlocked.
Did you try crouching at the Meowser fight? I feel like you could have hit the POW block (at least once) if you crouched while Mega Mario

So, you’re telling me that in NSMB DS, a fungus that grants Mario a few extra feet of height can make him easily defeat bosses while a literal power star granting invincibility and the ability to one-hit KO enemies just by physical contact does not affect most bosses at all?

same exact thoughts. most notably, the mega requiring 1 bump and 1 stomp with world 5 boss, but starman you need 1 single touch. then in the mario vs luigi mode you cant knock away mega using a starman.
It's because they intended you to be able use Mega Mushrooms in boss fights, but since you can't hold Stars they didn't program the bosses to have the usual interaction with the Star. The exception of course was Petey Piranha because they had placed a roulette block with a Star inside later in that Castle so they knew there was a chance that you would have that powerup for that boss fights, so Petey has normal collision with the Star.

I actually found a glitch in the first Bowser battle in New Super Mario Bros. If you hit the button and Bowser at the same time in Mega Mushroom form it unlocks movement during the cutscene and you can burn Mario in the lava below. I didn't know if you knew that.
I don't know if it works with the other two Bowser battles, because I haven't tried.

This is because in New Soup, you can store a Mega Mushroom in your item slot through the orange Toad Houses. This allows you to use it in battle without cheats, therefore the bosses were designed to interact with it.
I love how all the NSMB bosses have that one moment of "OH F*CK"

For those wondering, mariokart wii DOES have bosses, they were just never added to the normal game. I’m pretty sure they are still in the game files, but you basically gotta hack the files and do some tech stuff that idk how to do.
The reason NSMB has behaviour for the bosses being hit by Mario using a Mega Mushroom is because unlike future games, you can store a Mega Mushroom for later, by way of the block trick or just getting it from a Toad House.

I like how the giant Goomba in NSBMDS is somehow still slightly bigger than Mario after eating the Mega Mushroom.
In NSMB it's actually much funnier when with the mega mushroom you beat the bosses with a ground pound, it really looks like you are actually trying to squash them

Yeah they’re not in the game normally they’re essentially just a bunch of leftover code of a mission mode that never got fully made,
Modders have revived them however.
