I stuck with the SNES until 1999 and the main reason was because I worked at Target and they had a killer SNES collection for sale and they had a ton of $20 SNES games, so that kept me with the little gray and purple box.
Ocarina of Time and Parasite Eve pushed me over to N64 and PlayStation but I still consider SNES to be the best console ever
In Japan, there are loads of super Famicom games too by 2003. Lots of jrpgs were recommended over there for the snes
I mentioned this on another comment but we bought the SNES in 1998 when it was already on its way to getting discontinued. And I don't regret the decision because it has a massive library to choose from. You just had to go to whatever flea market close to you. That was a reason we also chose it over the Genesis.

I got my SNES in 1992 and stuck with it until 97. I finally gave in and got an N64. However, I still played my SNES regularly for a long time afterwards. Great system.
Fun Fact: Star Fox 2 was supposed to be one of those last SNES games but was canned at the last minute to focus all 3D games on the N64.

Seems to be the case at times. I can only figure it's because they started working on it before the next system was announced and took that long to complete.
That's was always the case then. And sadly nowadays we don't really see that type of programming prowess and ingenuity from developers. I think they have too many options and tools to work with. Back then necessity being the mother of invention never rang so true.
@@BdR76people still come out with stuff for Sega consoles. But most isn't AAA quality. Most of the original AAA developers moved on or are out of the business all together. You rarely see a new original SNES or N64 game. You never see a new PS ,PS2, or PS3 game, Xbox and so forth.
some of the first year games were awesome though on snes. sim city, zelda 3, final fight, castlevania 4, un squadron, contra 3, gradius 3, super ghouls n ghosts, act raiser. its like the first year and then last year of a console's life are the greatest.

Great vid; one aspect is that in Europe, the n64 didn't launch until March 1997 so if you were a Nintendo fan at the time holding out for an N64, there was a strange - and very long period - where we'd be reading about all these next-gen titles in magazines but the shelves were still mostly filled with 16bit games - so a lot of those late titles make a lot of sense in the context of the european market. Importing consoles was pretty rare given the power and TV differences then.
US gamers were very lucky at that time in terms of how early they got titles and the performance of NTSC over PAL games and I remember how jealous I was of them getting to play Mario 64 and so on months before us. I would spend hours reading about Mario 64 in magazines and trying to imagine what it was like to play just looking at the small, often blurry static images.
In France the launch was as late as September 1997.
Yeah, from our perspective here in PAL-land, Donkey Kong Country 3 was pretty much the SNES finale before the N64 came around, so from my perspective it's the peak of the SNES.

Man the mid 90s was great year for gaming. I still remembered when they had the SNES, NES, and Sega games at walmart next to the cd and cassettes aisle. Now CDs are rarely there anymore. Maybe one small section. Boy how the times as changed.
And yet vinyl records are booming, you can get them at target or Walmart.
@@andrewsveikauskas right. I'm sure vinyl will be here for a very long time. There was even a thing called "Blue Ray CDs" which was rare to get your hands on. I knew vinyl was still a think during the time when they weren't in stores which they were either only sold in record shops or some band camp album. Hell the Vapor wave albums cost a fortune and quickly sold out due to the popularity.
I have dk country 2 and I have frogged on the sega genisis to it’s the best home port ever .
The Donkey Kong Country trilogy wasn't claymation but CGI and they did so before even Toy Story came out, the first ever CGI animated feature film. DKC was out in 94, almost a whole year before TS, though in Sweden TS wasn't out until feburary 96 so it was shipping nine-ten months before DKC3 (which was released before the N64 here, EU didn't get it until march 97).
If I recall, the N64 was difficult to get at first (I mean, for a lot of people, this was the first 3D system so it was HOT!!!). I vaguely remember people in 1997 having a hard time finding one too. Definitely by 1998, you could find stock in Wal-Mart daily. By 2002, they were trying to get rid of every last one they had on clearance! (making way for Xbox, PS2, and GameCube)!
If only Rockman & Forte, Tales of Phantasia, and Star Ocean could've somehow been brought over. Then again it might seem a little odd for a game like Tales of Phantasia with such an adorable looking cast to have an M rating!
The Frogger episode of Seinfeld aired late April of 1998. Maybe that had something to do with the re-releases. They would have had to get permission to use the name, so Konami would have known with plenty of warning.
Donkey Kong Country 3 gets flack for being the “weakest” of the DKC trilogy on SNES.
But honestly it gave you a lot more to do and provided more of a challenge than the previous two entries. You can’t say Rare got lazy with it just cause Nintendo 64 came out.
And I still find Wrinkly Kong playing on an N64 with that 16 bit rendition of ‘Peach’s Castle 64’ very endearing. ❤️
I cant disagree. I found the first donkey kong country to be rather bland to play after too soon. it looked amazing but the gameplay was not as good as other platformers around at the time. It wasn't awful, but i remember considering the gameplay passable but mediocre at the time,
DKC3 is the victory lap of the series. The developers just had a blast with different ideas that they wanted to experiment with. It's nowhere near as good as 2, but it makes it such a unique experience amongst the trilogy.

but i was lucky i played dkc1 then i got dkc3 on christmas and then later dkc2 which was the perfect order for me.

The late 90s were great. Whether, you played a late SNES RPG with such deep stories to tell, an incredibly rememberable PS1 game that’s very niche or overlooked gems on the Saturn and Dreamcast, you were sure to get something good out of your buck when you were playing during this era and hey, a ton of games still hold up very well to this day… you just gotta grow accustomed to what was and wasn’t the standard for the early 3D titles hehe

Agree big time about a Robin Hood Disney game. Also, Incantation always reminded me of the Willow arcade game for some reason.
I rebought SF2 plenty. Then rebought on other consoles and, a few years ago, that collection on Switch. I'm octuple-dipping at this point.

I would personally rather buy street fighter 2 four times than pay for dlc on half the games i buy now since i would still save money in the end and be less annoyed.
The 90s was kind of an odd decade in gaming. IT was a golden decade for gaming, some of the best games ever made were released in the 90's. I find it interesting how the decade is split down the middle with two of the greatest generations of home consoles ever. Pre-95, the industry was dominated by Nintendo and Sega, the 16-bit wars were in full swing, and we were gives some of the greatest games ever for that generation. Post-95, the industry was dominated by the next-gen consoles, ps1 & N64 (I know Sega had the Saturn, but 95 also signaled the beginning of the end for Sega). Some of the GOATS were released in this Gen. Mario and Zelda basically redefined how 3d games were approached and played. With ps1 and N64 duking it out till the end of the 90s, gamers were given the absolute creme of the crop.

for me it was the 1985-1992 era of gaming. we saw nintendo's NES release in 85 and saw the likes of Super Mario... all the way to Mortal Kombat by 92 on genesis and snes. after that, things kinda... dwindled. u had tg16 and neo geo in the middle to mix it all up. but those were my golden years.
LOL Saturn *SH!T* on the 64. You’ve got to be joking. Saturn had over 1,200 titles. Did the 64 even have 300 games…? I think it’s actually way less than that. Also, no one cares about video games after the 90s. That’s when the medium peaked

@Retro Gamer 1985 to 1992 were great years (I started gaming around 1986 in arcades here and there, then at home on the NES in 1988) but it didn't stop there for me. The move into full 3D with the N64 was also some of the happiest times of my life. It was the 2000s that I started to feel kind of bored but nowadays I recognize that games are generally better than they've ever been (the Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 remakes are the perfect example).

Terranigma was definitely looked over greatly. A very good action RPG. One of my favourites for sure
I wish we got that game released in North America. Thankfully a friend of mine modded my SNES Classic to include it.
If we count the SFC games, Mega-Man & Bass(Rockman&Forte) was released in '98 for the system. Us Westerners didn't get that till much later on the GBA.
The SNES was the last Nintendo console I owned.
I never realized that Dixie Kong's Double Trouble never included 'Donkey Kong Country' the title. I think it would be nice if Nintendo did a remake of the DKC Trilogy to the Switch.
I never realized the load times in Street Fighter Alpha 2. But I was a kid back then so I probably didn't care enough.

@@JohnRiggs The proper term is "Pre-rendered" however 3D rendered isn't technically wrong, they were 3D rendered prior to being made into sprites, thus being Pre-rendered, either way I found it mildly amusing.

I covered the DOS version of Prince of Persia 2 on my own show a few months ago. The start of the game is combat heavy but the traditional exploration gameplay comes back into focus after that opening area... though the SNES version also plays RIDICULOUSLY fast for whatever reason. o_o;

We played a lot of Timon and Pumbas Jungle games on the PC. It was surreal how a game could have that Disney animated look at the time,
and it had quite a variety of mini games, the one with the most depth was the puzzle game that was like puyo pop with bugs. This makes me interested in checking out the Super Nintendo version.
Also Lost Vikings 2 is going on my list. The original is a classic. Great reminiscing.
I think Disney's "The Black Cauldron" would have made an awesome game.

It is a Sierra game on the PC. I played it as kid after grabbing a copy from Radio Shack in the late 80’s! It was very similar to the King’s Quest series. I would love to see a true remake of the Prydain chronicles in the future ;)

I was a die hard SNES user well into the N64 era. I still have Harvest Moon and Frogger CIB. Harvest Moon was amazing. Frogger was great looking but I was disappointed they didn't add an option for music during game play. And If I recall, the title screen was completely silent.

In EU Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow was called Donald Duck in Maui Mallard for the console games but was for some reason called Cold Shadow when it came to PC so when I saw Cold Shadow in a PC/Electronics store I thought "Wait a minute, that's the box art from Maui Mallard, why is it called Cold Shadow?". This was years before I saw the info online on Wikipedia. Also, I think that Donald Duck being Maui Mallard is like Duck Dodgers is to Daffy Duck, that's a character that he plays but still have the ducks personality coming through.

I've tried Harvest Moon for many years and platforms but never really got into the game. I really tried because everyone had it. You are right that we were too busy playing on N64 so we missed a lot.
Today I'm 53, and PS5, Xbox Series X and PC games are still more than just a hobby and I'm really excited to play the new Zelda with my grandson next weekend. (It all started in '77 with the Atari 2600, bc I was too young for the Arcades. Ok, _now_ I feel old..!^^)

The SNES port of PoP2 was GARBO! It's incomplete and glitchy as hell. For example, at the end of the game you need to become one with the flame so to speak, and they couldn't even get THAT part of it right... It had promise, but it fell flat on its face. lol.

I love the idea of these videos - I too was behind a few years in gaming tech but it did not matter to me and it meant I got games cheaper/2nd hand as others tried to finance the more modern stuff
I always think I'm done completing the collection of games I played as a kid... until you release another video. :D

I never played it myself, but I do remember Harvest Moon being advertised pretty heavily around that time. I'm still amazed about this time period though. Going to the video game section of a store and you'd see Wario's Woods, Playstation, Warcraft, SNES, and N64 titles all on the shelves at the same time. It was like three generations of games on there at the same time.

I noticed this in a video I saw about the best games on each gen. And some picks were released the same year or after the next gen console. Sometimes huge titles. So confusing but I guess the number of previous consoles means higher potential to sell more than a new console.

There was a game room in my building with SNES and Sega Mega 2 consoles and games, and then came N64 and Play Station, so "old" games and consoles were only for rent. After some time, my parents decide to buy SNES with some games: Super Mario World, Donkey Kong 3, Top Gear 3000, Power Rangers, and some Mickey and Donald game that never worked.
As far as I'm concerned, I couldn't missed DK3 - because that was the only one I played for year to come =)
Alpha 2 was a damn incredible port, especially the music! It’s a real love letter to the fans and a great send-off, considering the lengths the devs went through despite having almost no hope of turning a decent profit- and it was generally trashed in reviews if I recall.
It's a really good outside of the loading issues, they needed a little longer in Q&A to sort out the loading issues (someone's released a rom hack that eliminates them on original hardware so it was within reach).

Bumba and Timon jungle games, I had it for the PC it is so much more home on there.
The shooting gallery support mouse control and the game has tons of voice lines for the game and the animation looks so much better on pc.
I havnt played those Prince of Persias probably since they then, that was one of the most unforgiving

I worked at target when the transition from snes to n64 was going on and I remember we had Mr Do, also Hagane and Final Fight 3.. We had a crap load of Illusion of Gaia in a fat box with a t-shirt. I don't ever remember getting Kirby 3 at the store though

N64 was launched in germany in march 1997. The last SNES fullprice games I bought were Terranigma and DKC3 in december 1996.
The loading pauses on Street Fighter Alpha 2 had more to do with the audio than with graphics decompression as what was previously believed.
My god I loved my 64. It was my 2nd system (because "We already bought you a Nintendo") and the first I bought with my own money. Such great times!
I remember Rare put a N64 console in the background in DKC3. Cool little Easter egg back in the day.

Japanese Super Famicom release date Nov 21, 1990 until 2007 or so depending on if you want to include the Nintendo Power memory cassette service. That's well into the Gamecube and Wii's early years. Insane longevity!!!

If I'm not mistaken, the SNES version of UMK3 has balance changes which created a different meta. There are apparently still tournaments for it in places like South America, though I'm having trouble finding footage
On the frogger remake, we're about the same age, you probably remember the centipede remake as well . I remember the tagline for the frogger remakes was "He's back" and the commercial had him going under surgery or something haha
Yeah, I was a kid in the 90s but I definitely remember having to buy full priced "upgrades" for Capcom fighting games and Pokemon.
Heck the selling points of Pokemon Crystal over Gold and Silver when it launched was letting you play as a girl and moving sprite images for the mons.
Things like that are now free update patches.
Glad to see Lost Vikings 2 on there! The Lost Vikings games are so great! In the sequel you could play as a werewolf or a dinosaur as well as the 3 main Vikings.
0:40 Hell no, I was too busy deciding whether to put my savings towards a Playstaion or Saturn (an N64 was not in the equation) but in the meantime I managed very well with the (UK) winter releases of UMK3 and DKC3. SFA2 would have been a definite if at the time I hadn't assumed it were for the N64 missing out on it completely, still regret not reading through the 'Official Nintendo Magazine' preview of said game properly.

I was always a generation behind since I was poor growing up. So I bought Street Fighter Alpha 2 and loved it although I was surprised to find giant pauses between levels since it was cartridge. Bright colors and so much responsive than Super SF2 Turbo. I remember getting the PS1 version and disappointed that they didn't keep the Sakura petals for super combo finishings. More petals the higher grade of combo you did. Other than that, the PS1 had bigger sprites, more colors and bigger sound.

good game list mr riggs. i'll go so far as to say... that the first-year games on most consoles and the last-year games on most consoles are the best. example, first-year for snes had final fight, super mario world, contra 3, zelda 3, castlevania 4, gradius 3, super ghouls n ghosts.. just so many heavy hitters. a lot of the games later at the end of the snes life cycle were also pretty good with very good graphics. this is same for the genesis and nes as well.
I had a couple friends that had an N64, so I just played theirs. I was in way too deep with my Saturn to purchase another console at the time. I did get an N64 years later and I love the system still today for sure.

I have Nintendo, SNES, Sega Genesis, N64, Gamecube, PS1 and PS2 games emualated on my Xbox Series X
In Japan the picture with Super Famicom was different. In 1998 Nintendo released Wrecking Crew '98, Super Punch Out, Dr.Mario, Super Famicom Wars, Wizardry 1,2,3, tons of Mario Picross games on Nintendo Power "official flash cartridge". In September of 1999 there was release of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. And final game was Metal Slider Glory: Director's Cut released on November 29 2000.
Your speculation on the Disney games are correct! Maui Mallard is clearly Donald Duck, but they wanted to use the image of Donald but without having to worry about the "history" of Donald (nephew of Scrooge McDuck, dating Daisy Duck etc), kinda use Donald as an actor instead of a character. Kinda shame it didn't work out, I liked Cold Shadow.
And yes- Pinnochio was being taken out of the vault and was given a game to go along with it. Kinda curious if Robin Hood was ever taken out of the vault in a timely enough manner that he could've gotten an SNES / Mega Drive game...
The weirdest thing about the Space Invaders release was that it was originally released only in japan in 1994, but you could play it in NA if you got the Gameboy version released the same year. The whole SNES game was built into the Gameboy cart and was accessible when plugged into the Super Gameboy.
The last licensed game to come out on the SNES, or in this case, the Super Famicom was in japan on November 29, 2000. Very close to being out in 2001, certainly quite late in the SNES/Super Famicom's life. And the Gamecube, was to come out in japan in a little under a year from then, further going to show how much of a late title that one. was
I LOVED a good majority of these games even though I had a N64 (my parents spoiled me 😅)

With all these releases, I was happy with my Super Nintendo well into 1997-1998, and didn't feel the need of an upgrade. Street Fighter Alpha 2 had loading times, but I didn't care, it was so fun to learn and use so many characters and all the Super combos. Donkey Kong Country 3 was awesome as well, and I really don't get it when people call it a black sheep. For me it was on par with DKC2, and it's a lot more refined and advanced, in terms of gameplay, than DKC1. And of course, in the late 1990s, I also bought some older games that I had missed before, like F-Zero
I still remember waiting at Best buy to buy harvest moon. Still love that game.
We had a rental place that for some reason kept buying NES games when the SNES came out because on your last video on this I remember renting A LOT of those games you talked about. These however I have only seen on emulation or years and years later. I think it might have been when the SNES came out they didn't have as many games to buy for it because SNES and NES was it for my rental place but when the N64 came out there was PS1 they could buy for also so they didn't buy any SNES games.
I was never much of a Nintendo kid. Got a SNES for cheap in this era. Then went to college in the middle of nowhere... Found Harvest Moon for sale at the local mall and was mocked for buying a farming game.... I played it so much over the long winter. Such a great game
Even the Super Famicom in Japan was getting games up until November 2000, when the PS2 was just only released a few months prior.

You forgot "Do Run Run" which was a another Mr. Do game and my personal favorite.
I actually bought ultimate mk3 for snes even though I had a n64 because I didn't have a Playstation yet and my pc couldn't run mk3 worth a damn. Though I think this game came out before the n64 anyway but I was saving my money for the n64 so I couldn't get it then 😂I'd play it on my buddy's computer which was beefier than mine.
Kirby's Dreamland 3 is one of, if not my favorite, games on the SNES. I found it through ROMs many years after the end of the SNES.
Incantation looks just like The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse which also goes along with your Maui Mallard point about it being like the characters were acting in their own games.

I think my favorite SNES game is Dragon Quest I&II for Super Famicom English Translation. I play on the China Everdrive Clone using the Retroad 5 Plus from Ali-Express.
