- 1993 was an epic year for Video Games. Some amazing video games came out but it was also flooded with a bunch of not-so-great games. Here's a chronological look at just some of the SNES games you were playing in 1993.

In 1993 I was in 6th grade, and I swapped games to try out with my friend Tom. He gave me Gradius 3, I gave him SimCity. When I brought Gradius 3 back, Tom wasn't at school that day, so I just kept it in my locker, where it got stolen. (Friggin Lorenzo.) So my mom thought it was justified that since I lost his game, he got to keep mine. Parenting! Because of this, I asked for SimEarth for Christmas, and I got it, and... it sucks. One of the most disappointing game experiences of my life. At least I was able to get Star Fox that year
Yeah, trading games at school was always a gamble, especially with lockers. Once I traded my game (forgot what it was) for my friend's Spider-Man and X-Men (terrible). We traded back before school started, later that day he told me his copy was stolen. I felt bad for him, but was also thankful that we traded back early as I always kept my games on me (I never used my high school locker)
SNESdrunk i appreciate you I’ve been blessed to see all of gaming from 1980-Now
@@JohnRiggsappreciate all you do Riggs
Dewd I was in fourth grade in 1993!
SNESdrunk! Love your channel too! I feel like the old guy as I was 7 - 8th grade in 93!
Hey John, you got one thing wrong. SSF2 for the SNES was released in 1994. We got SF2 turbo in 1993. Great video. I really enjoyed it.
according to the wiki release date it was 93
Hey @@JohnRiggs the arcade was 1993, but SNES was August 1994. :)
@@JohnRiggs wiki is not GamePro!🤔
@@hectormontalvo5565 - The crew behind the site try their best; they link to every reference and try to clear up any inconsistencies that occur.
Besides, I was 13 and a reader of EGM, and I saw the article and cover for Super Street Fighter II in 1993. Then there was an article the next year that said it was coming to SNES in 1994.
So yes, wikipedia was 💯% correct on its release dates and I CAN CONFIRM.
@@chrisrj9871 I used to have all Nintendo Power, GamePro, EGM, EGM2, GameFan and Super Juegos until the PS3. But when I sold my collection to pump the money into my x-ray tech career I also sold the magazines for $.25 a quarter each! Of course I don't remember everything as there were hundreds of magazines.🤔
I rented games a lot from a store called Phar-Mor. Games were a buck a piece for 3 nights. I miss that store, and I miss the days of renting, although I think that's rosy colored glasses talking for me. Now that I think of it, I rented a lot of bad games. The good ones were always out!
I got great deals at Phar-Mor. I miss that place
Me too ,but was Rx place here it nes ,alot then later snes and Sega Genesis which bought cheap then and alot of VHS tapes
Renting games and movies back then was better if you ask me?
Nowadays it’s more convenient sure, but back then everything had more to experience and as a Result was more enjoyable imo!!
Going to Blockbuster on Friday after a long School week was always so exciting, even when you rented a Turd..
I’ll never forget one of my Favorites of all time that I rented and then later when it was time to Return it, Trading my friend Shawn RE 2 for, was none other than Gran Turismo for PlayStation!! (I know wrong Video)
But in general I don’t at all think it’s just “Rose Tinted Glasses” because it really was more of an Experience back then?!
I was 11 when PS1 came out in 95! I never got to play many SNES Games…
With SMB All-Stars you're not completely wrong. Lost Levels specifically (as well as the original Japanese SMB2) has a feature where if you finish the game with zero warp pipes you get to move on to "World 9" and finishing that world brings you to the letter worlds A through D which are mostly just harder versions of earlier levels. And don't forget that Secret of Mana supported THREE players simultaneous with a multi-tap! ;D
you're right about 3 players! I never got to try that. I only played it briefly as a two player
Every few days It was a sickness I spent more time at Video Express and Video center than the house 7-mile round trip not a problem and I was a chubby kid that is from over doing it after the trips
The US version (Lost Levels) lets you die & continue on world 9, but the original Famicom version just gives you ONE life. If you die there, it's instant game over.
He's surprisingly lukewarm about Batman Returns. I thought that game was incredible. So many badass moves. I'll never get sick of throwing guys through windows.
It's not a terrible game, a great rental. If it was 2-player I probably would have loved it more.
it was awful
I can't figure out the platforming stages without dropping several lives. The beat em up portion is super solid
If you liked that Bubsy idle animation, play Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run, and when you're pitching, don't press anything.
"Play the game, kid!"
I had a Genesis but my friends had SNES. We used to go back and forth about which system had the better games. Little did we know the answer was actually the PC Engine (or Turbografx 16, minus some of the stellar Japanese only releases like Rondo of Blood)
I was one of the few kids that had a TG-16 and even had the CD add on and it was not region locked so I had Dracula X Rondo of Blood. SNES was still my fave, but by 1993 TG-16 was just doing game sby mail order by the end of the year as stores no longer were carrying their games and it was the end of support for the most underrated console ever.
I also had a Turbografx 16 wish i had the CD attachment Turbografx 16 and Turbografx 16 CD had some amazing shoot em ups
Had a friend who had Rock N Roll Racing and played it till I beat it as you can upgrade your vehicle like RC Pro AM minus collecting letters. Also, played countless hours of WWF Royle Rumble and remembering the arm drag trick but remember the awesome intro music when highlighting each wrestler. I don't recall bonus levels in All Stars and I would borrow 7th Saga from a classmate and try to get as far as I could in the game with the same aava without them overriding it and getting stuck. I also still have a copy of Final Fight. Friends had Mortal Kombat and remember hitting R button with Johnny Cage and crotch shot everyone except Sonia through the tournament. Also had all three of the Super Star Wars games as a kid but no more.
StarFox blew my mind to pieces back then, could not believe that game. Love it to this day. And WWF Royal Rumble was _AMAZING_ to play with friends, me and my buddies during highschool years had an absolute blast every week-ends playing this together, so much fun. I'd say 1993 is the year when the 'dominance' of the SNES was truly starting, and probably 1994 being - overall - the best year of the system (in my opinion).
I've gotta comment. WWF Royal Rumble for me as a kid was so so enjoyable. And in a few ways was so much better than WWF Super Wrestlemania. More moves, larger roster, has the rumble and the game itself isn't lagged down like the previous release. Great video John
I played it all the time.
I loved it, I used to cheat with my turbo controller 😂win every grapple
@@Linuxpunk81 there was a cheat in the game you could unlock one punch to drain their life instantly
@@snbks4ever 😂no way. It never occurred to me to look for cheat codes for this.
Going to the video store to rent games back in the day is great nostalgia that ill always miss.
Oh, sometimes I still play Rock & Roll Racing, John. For me, that I love as s**t the nice old "RC Pro AM" for the NES, it was the best: futuristic feeling, cartoon graphics, rockin' music...it was everything for me.
I'm surprised you haven't mentioned Cybernator that game was awesome .
Fatal Fury was created by people that used to work at Capcom so… Whether it’s a clone or not I loved it and over the years found myself playing more SNK fighters from any other company. 3 Count Bout, Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, The King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown, Savage Rain, and World Heroes. Love them all!
rock n roll racing is probably the best 16 bit racing game ever. such an under rated gem.
Idk, it's arguable that the Nintendo Switch version of Star Link is the best Star Fox game we've had in a long, long time. Only on the Switch version, though.
Shanghai was on the Master System.
Star Fox is good because it laid the ground work for the 64 version.
EVO is a lot of fun. Painful when you choose the wrong upgrade and have to grind to get to the next one.
Captain America was such a good arcade game.
Silicone and Synapse is now Blizzard. so maybe Microsoft will remake Rock 'N Roll Racing where the drivers are WOW, FallOut, and Elder's Scrolls characters?
Blizzard! That's what I meant.
@@JohnRiggs but now that Microsoft owns them both you technically weren't wrong.
They already remade rock and roll racing
@@EirkenElite as an official remake or a fan remake?
This is the first time I've seen E.V.O! I must play this!
You should totally do a video on "clone games" so games that cloned super popular games like Asteroids, Centipede, Super Mario, Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, Metroid, Zelda, etc.
Pocky and Rocky is so cool! I love the colorful graphics and excellent music! It was also really fun! But man was it hard! I never was able to legitimately beat it! When I tried to get someone else to help me; we eventually gave up and popped in Mario Kart!
I didn't get my SNES until the following year for Christmas. If I had one in '93, then my picks would've been Batman Returns, Royal Rumble (had it on Genesis. Hulkamania brother!) and Super Mario All-Stars (which came with my SNES, along with the Super Game Boy). One you didn't mention, which would've been a must-have for me, is Tecmo Super Bowl. I know people have more love for the NES version, but I really enjoy the 16-Bit versions on SNES and Genesis.
2 years after the launch of the Super Nintendo, I became a fan of the Super NES in 1993. I had the 8-bit Nintendo NES, and the Game Boy. And I didn't have a Super Nintendo at that time, but I got it later in life in 2002.
I think this was the apex era for the 16-bit era. SO many great variety of games came out! I was 14-15 years old by then and it was truly a memorable time for me.
Many anime games were rebranded in the West due to licenses. That changed over time though 😉
ain't that crazy?
@@JohnRiggs not really… Japanese animation wasn’t mainstream until the late 90s, mostly with Dragonball Z, Pokemon and Digimon. Not only were anime series kinda niche and obscure, but licensing rights were all over the place 😅
It's a shame that we never got an official western release of the Sailor Moon: Another Story JRPG for the Super Famicom but at least there are fan translations.
I also somewhat liked the Tenchi Muyo! tactical JPRG for Super Famicom but that one was a lot easier than the Sailor Moon JRPG.
Mortal Kombat with the Genesis 6 button controller was the best way to play it outside of the arcade.
Grab your '80s Arcade air freshener johnriggs.myshopify.com/
and look out for more scents in the future like 'high school cafeteria', 'new game smell', 'grandma's house' and more.
16:17 7th Saga was so good BUT it was brutally unbalanced and at one point the game got to the ‘not fun’ level of hard.
I have heard the Japanese version is much better balanced.
Shanghai was released for the Master System and PCs. Same kind of game, of course. And the Genesis Captain America and the Avengers stomped the SNES version into the mud.
My all time favorite game Illusion of Gaia came out in ‘93 as well, although North America didn’t get it until the following year.
I learned pretty early on not get any movie licensed games, and that saved me a lot of heart ache.
Blizzard Arcade Collection has an HD remaster of Rock N’ Roll Racing. It’s available digitally for all current gen consoles and PC.
Honestly this is my favorite gaming channel on TH-cam. Loving the content.
I really need to play Secret of Mana again. I got stuck early in the game and quit playing it for awhile. Honestly, it was kind of hard to get into but the soundtrack and the visuals were amazing. Batman Returns and Star Fox are both EPIC games, Sunset Riders is challenging but a lot of fun, and back in the 90s I beat both of the Fatal Fury games. Terry Bogard and Kim Kaphwan were awesome!! Thanks John 🙏
I completely agree that THQ was like the new LJN. I grew up more SNES than NES, and when I saw the THQ logo on a SNES game, I got the same fear NES fans get from LJN. I remember THQ games always being in the bargain bin at the entrance of KB Toys.
I was a Genesis kid, so I played none of these in 1993...except at the Wal-Mart display. That being said, Royal Rumble on Genesis was probably the game I played more than ANYTHING. I even had my own notebook Federation tracking champions, King of the Rings, Rumble winners, etc. WWE 2K Universe mode, but analog 😂
I guess as a fan of Rock n Roll Racing I was fully aware of the remaster as part of the Blizzard Arcade Collection but I'm surprised by John here and many comments that it isn't common knowledge.
If you like Haggar from Final Fight 2 then you need to watch Godzilla: Final Wars 2004 because the character Captain Douglas Gordon looks just like Haggar from the video game!
Also, never even heard of Harley's Humongous Adventure for the SNES will have to check that game out!! My favorite fighting game is Clay Fighter just because it looked so different at the time!
I thought people preferred the Sega version of Aladdin more because you had a sword in that version.. Great video btw John.
I definitely remember renting Power Moves, Tiny Toons, Bubsy, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and Fatal Fury back in the late 90s. Had a cousin let me borrow Plok back in the day. Now I own the Super Famicom version. The artwork's alot different on the label.
To me, 1993 was all about Secret of Mana. I couldn't put it down
IMO the highlight of 1993.
I learned about Secret of Mana from a schoolmate who was roleplaying the stories and characters in the schoolyard. I eventually got it and beat it.
Super Nintendo Aladdin for the win and no I'm not wrong, I'm right. Yeeeeeaaaaahhhhhh 👍👍
I love Tiny Toons: Buster Busts Loose! It's an underrated snes game. easy to learn, difficult to master.
Not a lot of people mentioning Buster Busts Loose in the commets, makes me wonder if it's an obscure game not a lot of people played... but yes, it was cool. Very easy though, a breeze to run through, but I really remember liking how wallrunning made the levels FEEL different from other platforming game levels, like Sonic and Mario.
I got my SNES for mybirthday in 1993 with Super Mario All-Stars for free via mail...f*ck yeah!!
P.S. Shout-out to Final Fantasy II, F-Zero, and Super Mario World, the other games I got with my SNES...an awesome birthday indeed!!
The arcade collection has a revamped version of rock and roll racing as a definitive edition. The music used for it was modified to be the real deal and not just a rendition, but some tracks were replaced (paranoid was one track replaced by breaking the law). Also, they tried a free to play with heavy metal machines (even had Larry do the voice work), but lack of players made them have to shut it down.
Oh that's good news and ok I guess music I only SNES version
I've never been a 1993 guy.
All of my favourite 16 bit games came out in '91,' 92, '94, '95, and '96. (I'm talking NA releases here, so Asians, Brazilians, and Europeans probably had different experiences than I did.)
I guess the North American localization of Shining Force came out that year, and that kicks ass.
93 was a pretty grim year. Amazing games just before and just after, and there's a few hits in 93, but few and far between.
Jogurt!
Did you play Secret of Mana at all? It's one of my favorites and deserves the title of "a classic" in my eyes. The worst of it is that sometimes the enemies tend to attack and attack while the HP-loss animation is still going so you can't move, and you can only hold 4 of each item.
Still, it's a favorite for the gameplay, story and music, and the graphics really take you there, from right when the RPG boom was starting.
@@chrisrj9871 I didn't play it till years later, so it doesn't trigger any nostalgia for me. (in comparison, I played FF4, Super Mario RPG, and most of the best Sega Genesis RPG and PS1 RPGs within a year or two of release).
Never got into it, but I respect it. I think Quintet's trilogy of action RPGs (quadrology if you count Actraiser) are superior, especially as a single-player experiences.
Already bought one of the air fresheners at PRGE, its great in my game room.
the Shark Video Game MANEATER plays like E.V.O. for you fun evolving character game types. its fun punchy, and on modern systems.
I like The 7th Saga, I played it a lot as a teenager, but it is a hard game and it just gets harder as you go through it. Jurassic Park was an alright game. The lack of a save function in such a huge complex game was a major problem.
Battletoads battlemaniacs is one of my all time favourite snes game
Bubsy is a great game that doesn’t deserve the hate it gets. Once you learn how to play it (take your time, DON’T treat it like sonic) it’s actually quite fun
Moms playd SNES?? Must've had a really cool mom, ONLY time mine touched my games was to clean or throw 'em in "storage"! Never did find em after that 🤔lol
TMNT is phenomenal. Great soundtrack, great visuals, and challenging.
In addition to the games you mentioned, 1993 has one of my all time favorite SNES games Super Bomberman. I will also argue that Aladdin on the SNES is the better game.
Played Royal Rumble alot always liked picking Tatanka haha. Also a buddy had Plok so I'm familiar with and liked the game
Thank you for the upload! I must say to this day I'm still convinced the SNES is the greatest console of all time. The NES got peeps back into video games but the SNES was just like so many levels above it. I absolutely loved Mario World, Star Fox, and Lost Levels, but there were also all of the amazing RPG games like Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, Legend of Gaia, and Secret of Evermore. It most definitely had a huge effect on the person I am even to this day.
Goof troop is in my top 5 all time love love this game, my sister and I played it all the time
The 7th Saga is my favorite SNES game I've never beat
I never beat it, either. My fault for trying to play as the Robot haha
Shanghai was on many computers in 1986. The Apple IIGS version was outstanding - played it for many, many hours. And even my dad, who didn't like games, played it a ton.
I found your channel via Metal Jesus. I love all your videos, but these best-ofs are my most-favs.
Rock n roll racing deserves something, be a remake or remaster. I dont think it should change much, mb some updated graphics, more drivers and tracks, some new weapons and music. Gameplay and perspective are perfect the way they are! Fantastic game!
There was a gba game, but we really need a 3rd installment
@@MinorLG it did get a indie clone but was taken down
@@patg108 right, but an official release, licensed rock songs...
@@MinorLG its almost that, but spiritual successor/clone game tribute with unlicensed music in terms of use (it uses real songs but without the licenses)
Worth pirating to play it to see what it could look like, its pretty close to what the rock n roll racing would look and feel like
Rock'n Roll Racing has gotten a re-release, something called the Blizzard Arcade Collection along with Lost Vikings and Blackthorne... AND it still has the music in it!
I’ve watched this channel for awhile now but I never knew John Riggs thinks so little of one of the greatest Beat-em-ups ever in Batman Returns. He actually pauses and debates if this is better than the NES version.
I remember seeing Star Fox for the first time. I thought it looked amazing but after a few minutes playing it, I was done. Which is partly the opposite of Doom, I couldn't get enough of that shareware floppy going around at my school and it was my dream to have a PC that could play it at home. Took a few years but I eventually got one.
Street Fighter 2 Turbo was 1993 on SNES, Super Street Fighter 2 was 1994, which further proves your point in the video, DLC before DLC.
wiki is wrong
@@JohnRiggs yes, 1992 was SF2 WW, 1993 was SF2T, 1994 was SSF2, and if I remember correctly they all released in consecutive summers. Also I think the first Genesis SF2 was SF2 Special Champion Edition which was really Turbo/CE options and it was delayed until fall 1993 in the US, anyway.
Out of these, i had Fatal Fury, SMB:All Stars, Star Fox and, of course Mortal Kombat. But in 94 as i didnt get my SNES till Christmas 93, lol. Its really crazy to look back on these games 30 years later, as i didnt know what somenof them were. I would have loved EVO if i had known anything about it! 😂 Actraiser 2 was one i always wanted but never had too
This is my favorite series u do. It’s like a step back in time lol
I rented all those SF clones in 1993. Street Combat was the worst offender XD
Isn't clayfighter on the snes worth a good chunk of change?
I’m sure someone has already mentioned this, but you could hook up the Super Multitap and play Secret of Mana 3 player! One of my all time favorites!
Fun fact: The Sega Genesis version of Mortal Kombat outsold The SNES version by a 3 to 1 ratio.
good!
Suddenly them putting blood in the SNES release of MK2 makes a lot more sense...
So many games on the list I loved and put so many hours into.
Best idle animation was Earthworm Jim taking a piss.
Lots of great titles here; biggest stand-outs to me are SimEarth, Super Valis 4, Shadowrun, Rock & Roll Racing, EVO, and Secret of Mana. I first played SimEarth for my old Mac Classic (still have it), and while that version has more sophisticated terminology (e.g. avians instead of birds), the SNES version has color and music, and the soundtrack is borderline industrial at times; very interesting port. Loved Shadowrun, but couldn't get all that far; now that there's a mouse hack, I'm going to give it another shot, but I really loved the rereboot trilogy. Rock & Roll Racing was rereleased as part of the Blizzard Arcade Collection (also includes Lost Vikings and Blackthorne), but I couldn't tell you if it has multiplayer or anything like that.
Shadowrun was great on both platforms, rhey were just very different games. The SNES version was way better looking and had more of an adventure game feel with the Genesis being a much more traditional RPG. Shadowrun is a criminally underused IP. Rich and unique world that mixes fantasy and cyberpunk. I really don't understand how it isn't way more popular than it is
I know it wasn't on SNES because Acclaim had the console rights for the Simpsons duing the 16-bit era but the Simpsons Arcade Game would've looked fine on SNES assuming that Konami would've used the same graphics engine as TMNT: Turtles in Time. I wish Konami could've worked something out with Acclaim even if it meant Acclaim releasing it under their own label.
Some other TH-camrs have covered it, but the SNES port of Captain America & The Avengers was just complete garbage and should have been at least as good as the Genesis version, if not better. Technologically, I think those Konami arcades beat 'em ups like Simpsons and X-Men could have been pretty good for the SNES, if not arcade perfect. I think Capcom had the X-Men license for the SNES. X-Men Mutant Apocalypse was pretty fun on the SNES, btw.
Ahhh, the year video game hockey made me a lifelong fan of the sport, and of video game hockey up until 2005 or so.
Rock N Roll Racing is on the Blizzard Collection on current platforms, but it doesn’t have the licensed music.
Yes it does. It might be a missing a specific track or 2 but it does have the licensed music.
@johnriggs I laughed at the “a game your mom would play.” I completely understood the context, but I couldn’t help hear it in that schoolyard diss tone “your mom would play this” 🤣🤣
Lots of childhood nostalgia in this video.
Good games and year 1993
Actraiser 2 should've TOTALLY been named something else, like "Angels Strike!" or something
ooh, I like that name. Can even be in the same universe and everything, I wouldn't mind.
going from actraiser 1 to 2 was a real downer. i agree with the name change and agree it can be in the same universe. i wish actraiser can make a comeback.
What? No, shut up, lol that cracked me up 😅
I played the NES version of tmnt tournament fighters as a kid. I quite liked it! Also I love the 16 bit LJN wwf games!
18:28 I’m a big fan of this game! Plok’s ost is so damn sick! I worked so hard on Child’s play mode on this round! Rank 9/10
I have gave it some thought .. This is my favorite channel. Thank you
The Warriors of Battle is probably a mobile game.
That name does have that "shoddily translated gacha-game" vibe to it, I must admit.
Goof Troop was a master piece
Silicone and Synapse is now Blizzard. Also, there is a remake of Rock and Roll Racing being made. It has a different name (I think its called Motor Rock) because i dont think Blizzard has anything to do with it.
4:00 ayo literally pizza tower
i'd love to play a game called "The Warriors of Battle"!
Loved WWF royal rumble I was ten when that came out and I played it all the time great memories I might have to get online and find a copy now cuz I wanna play it
Lost Vikings looks like a Duke Nukem clone
Starlink was released on the Switch. It's kind of technically a Starfox game, right? 🤔
Buster Bust Loose was one of my favorite games growing up, period!!
An updated Rock N' Roll Racing does exist! One Blizzcon, Blizzard released Blizzard Arcade Collection which has an updated version of RnR Racing, The Lost Vikings, and Blackthorne. Has options to use updated soundtrack with real tracks or the original.
The Sega Genesis port of "Captain America and the Avengers," which was released in 1992, was much better. I got it that year for Christmas, along with "John Madden Football '93."
Combatribes is a blast
I loved Bubsy
Whoa! Haha, interesting to learn that Street Combat was just a reskin of Ranma 1/2!
Shanghai was on the NES and Gameboy to let that title make sense and it's pretty decent given the 8bit format too. Also you left out, Valis had a start too on the NES (Famicom) in Japan, sadly needs a translation since it has some poorly done cryptic bits in town streets areas to get the game triggered to move further yet the hack and slash was there too. Then later you hit on Plok and that one I saw that interview, seems Miyamoto calls it the 3rd best platformer on SNES and had considered publishing it until it looked like Yoshi's Island would maybe have its profit shared with it so they didn't. I'd believe it given I never played it until days ago when I finally found a copy and it's solid, very solid.
