I got the SNES after a cousin rented SFII and I fell in love with the game. A Link to the Past was my 2nd favorite game in 1992. In 1993 SFII Turbo made me forget about every other game.
Kids these days have no idea how freaking huge SFII was back then. I remember when I was a kid my local arcade had 6 arcade machines of SFII all in a row, and there was always a line for each one whenever I showed up. Even some of our Burger Kings had a SFII machine set up. It was bananas.
My sister & I got a SNES for X-Mas in 1992. My parents did a bang up job. Super Mario World & Super Mario Allstars along with Actraiser, U.N. Squadron, Lemmings, Legend of Zelda, & Super R-Type. WWF RR, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Super Maro Kart, & Turtles In Time came shortly after... I still got a nice collection of around 150 games! (& a Game Genie!) Super R Type is way too hard! Can't make it past lvl. 4 without a cheat.. Legend of The Mystical Ninja is underrated!
I loved the arcade pit fighter game. The snes version was my 4th snes game to buy with my paper route money and boy was I severely disappointed. Walmart let me return the game for super ghosts and goblins. I picked up super contra after shoveling snow all day and I still have all my games in good condition with the original packaging. Your channel brings back so many memories.
It's funny that you mentioned that Walmart lets you return your game because you didn't like it. KB Toys did the same thing for me with pit fighter back when it came out!(think about all the people that return to that game) 🤣👍 That would never happen today though.
@@andrewmoe7078 I totally forgot about KB Toys. The KB at my local mall would set their own prices on games. They were the only place around with Street Fighter 2 in stock and I paid $70. Lmao. I'm still mad at myself for that.
TMNT IV: Turtles in Time is one of the rare cases where the SNES port is far superior to the arcade version in almost every way (except for the lack of 4-player simultaneous play). Better gameplay, better bosses, more stages, and even the mode 7 graphics were better than whatever the arcade version of Turtles in Time was doing.
John, you’re one of my favorite TH-camrs. Your voice, tone, and cadence are super calming. Your videos are super helpful for relaxation. You have a super positive and calming energy. Also I just love the content. I can’t get enough of old school gaming. Seriously thank you for what you do.
I agree, man. I'm 43, and just about everything on this channel meshes well together. Nostalgia mixed with an upbeat attitude and a nice presentation make for a relaxing and enjoyable few minutes during a hectic day. Thanks!
I agree. You should consider stitching some of your similar videos together into a long compilation. Another TH-camr, Whang!, Who I really like, does that, and I thought I was weird because I would put those videos on to fall asleep and keep it playing because I don't sleep well, so when I would wake up in the night, it would still be playing and I'd fall right back to sleep. Lo and behold, there are tons of comments of others who do the same thing. Just something to think about.
Zelda 3 and Super Star Wars were my favourites and I still play the games several times every year. Super Star Wars had a fantastic soundtrack too which made the game so much better.
Wow, what a stellar line-up of games! So many classics, so many memories. I remember playing Super Star Wars during Christmas of 1992 and we were blown away!
1992. That was such a good year for my SNES. I received that year in order: Contra III: The Alien Wars, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Street Fighter II, TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, Super Star Wars, and Road Runner: Death Valley Rally. I also received a Genesis for Christmas that year.
A Link to the Past for me. It's in the Top-10 Best Games of All-Time in my opinion. A very special honorable mention goes to TMNT IV: Turtles in Time as well. I also really enjoyed Ys III: Wanderers From Ys...but on the TG-CD.
Super Adventure Island was the first game I rented for the SNES and 30 years later I still go back to it frequently. So much nostalgia for The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, a fantastic soundtrack to boot.
I have a strong attachment to so many games from 1992. I got my SNES for Christmas of '92, and along with SMW being packed in, my parents got me and my brother Super Double Dragon, so that's actually the first game we played on it. Joe and Mac was also the first game I rented. I had surgery in early '93, so I got Zelda, Street Fighter II and Super Star Wars to keep me occupied during my recovery. ALttP is probably my favorite game of all time, but man that was a killer lineup.
In 1992 my friend got an SNES for his birthday, and for the next several weekends I stayed over at his house every Saturday Night and played Top Gear, Street Fighter II, and Final Fight.....also Super Mario World because it came with the console. Those are some of the best memories I have.
1992 was such a great year. Thanks for making this video. It actually brought back many memories. Even though Magic Sword, TMNT, Star Wars, Double Dragon, Zelda, Mario Kart, and all of shooters were either owned or rented, my favorite was Street Fighter 2. It was the system seller for me. I traded my Genesis, a few games, and mowed many lawns to get the SNES, two controllers, and Street Fighter 2. I put so many hours into it, and still am good at it to this day.
Yes!. been waiting for more in this series. I've been curating a games list for my son to play as he grows up. This, John hancock's hidden gems and CGQ's launch games videos are an invaluable resource.
I played Super EDF at a friend's house when I was a kid and never could remember the name of the game. I only knew the music to level 1 and now after 30 years I can finally play it again! Thank you!
1992 may well be my favorite year of childhood gaming... Turtles in Time, Link to the Past, Street Fighter 2, Super Star Wars., Mario Kart... man, every Nintendo Power that came in the mail was a harbinger of the awesomeness id be renting in the near future - and the NES had some bangers that year too.
Thank you for bringing up the NES in 1992. Even though we already had a SNES in the house, I got Mega Man 4 and Darkwing Duck for the NES that Christmas and had a great time with each!
@@MichaelTaylor-qp2xf oh man; I got DWD for my birthday that year and also got MM4 for Xmas! Love the NES in 92; just wish I had the foresight to grab games like Panic Restaurant, Little Samson and Felix The Cat before they got crazy!
So many great games for the SNES in 92. Think my favorite from this group would have to be TMNT 4: Turtles in time. But had such great times with Street Fighter 2, Bart's Nightmare , Mario Paint and Mario Kart (amongst others). Also got some games I need to check out soon that I haven't had the chance to enjoy yet (all these years later). Great video John, looking forward to the next one.
I love this “next year” of classic gaming consoles. Everyone has done the launch titles thing to death. But it’s the first year or two where some of the most interesting things come out (at least back in the day. Now video game consoles kinda just “are” for the first few years).
It’s cool to see the games that released on the year I was born. I’m grateful to remember - being able to get new SNES games for Christmas & birthday as a child (1996). I was born JUST in time to still get new games being released at the end of the SNES’s life. (Games like Kirby’s Dream Land 3, Donkey Kong Country 3, Super Mario RPG). Luckily, my older brother had already acquired some of the games listed in this video, so I didn’t miss out. SNES will for ever be my favorite console. Great video. Thanks for sharing!
Probably my favorite part of Mystical Ninja was the mini-games in the carnival section. I also really liked the silly humor in the story cut scenes such as the new transportation device which was a cannon that fired you across the country.
I just found this channel, but i remembered playing legend of the mystical ninja as a kid at my cousins house and all i could remember from it was the art design of the houses and one of the bosses. I have been trying to find the name of this game for years! And this video did it!
Also, Cantra III may well be the cream of the crop: Atmosphere, Action, and Aggravation were all on 11 for it...still more fun to play than many titles for the SNES...
War of the Gems, Turtles in Time, X-men Mutant Apocalypse, Mario Kart, Mario all stars, Maximum Carnage, Separation Anxiety, NBA JAM and Super Castlevania 4.
As somebody who still has an SNES to this day, nostalgia is an understatement. There are way too many memories you've unlocked behind some of these games. Case in point: Super Mario Kart went on nonstop at my house during parties and get-togethers. But, my all-time favorite will forever be Street Fighter II; I remember incessantly begging my momma to take me to my granny's house just to play SF2 with my cousin and his friends, until I eventually got the game for my console and my other cousins would play along with me 😊
Zelda for sure! That’s the game I always go back to and never get disappointed and play to the end. Great video, so nice to be reminded of the golden era of video games
John I love your consistency I've found so many great games from your channel and I have to say I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and time with us! Much love man! 🎮📺
Wanderers From Y's was one of my favorite SNES games that came out in 1992. I like that game so much I even own and played Y's III on the Sega Genesis.
I love it too. I have on both SNES and Genesis. I like the music better on Sega, it rock harder, but like the better colors on Nintendo. They're both fun 😊
I was born in 1992 but I do remember beating Contra 3 in 1999 and is still my favourite game today. Still need to watch the Super Cyborg video you released, but my god did that game truly hit the contra itch I was looking for a 5 years ago, still looking to scratch that contra itch though today.
I still remember the day we saw SFII in the arcade and it just looked soooooo sick, and then we were literally able to play it on our TV at home later that night, just amazing
Contra 3. I was jamming on Sega with Road Rash 2, Streets of Rage 2, and Sonic 2 as well. 1992 is probably one of my favorite years in gaming of all time.
My absolute favorites from this list are Ys 3, Axelay, and Imperium, and of those, I'd have to go with Ys 3; it has great music, a cool adventure, really wild-looking equipment icons, and a crazy-big moveset right out the gate! Still, lots of really underrated games on this list, and even more underrated soundtracks; Joe & Mac, Ys 3, the weird Super Adventure Island, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Super Double Dragon, Magical Quest, and even Spanky's Quest! Spanky's Quest also had such surreal visuals; I especially liked World 3 and 4. Also, I will absolutely go to bat for Final Fantasy Mystic Quest; it has a lot of neat features, and is definitely worth a play.
The background in Axelay actually isn't mode 7 which is even more impressive. Also my favorite game in this list is hands down is The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
I was living near Osaka, Japan in 92. I remember going first thing in the morning to a small store to buy a couple copies of SF2, then mailed one copy back home to Canada.
1992 was a pretty good year for the SNES. Pretty sure I played most of these games. Contra 3 definitely brings back memories. It was my turn to rent a game, and I remember asking my brother about Link to the Past, since he rented it before. Well, I get to Blockbuster, and they didn't have it. But I found Contra 3, so that was a good consolation prize. Rampart was another one of my brother's rentals. Lost to him every time. And last but not least, Joe & Mac. The last game we ever rented from Blockbuster.
I received my SNES the Christmas of '92. It was just the deck with one controller. I got Final Fantasy 2(4) with the system. The first game I bought the very next day was Legend of the Mystical Ninja. I loved that game. I liked going to the arcade areas and playing Gradius.
How to cheese pit fighter. Play as the kickboxer and put your opponent close to the crowd and between you and the crowd. Use your jumping double spinning kick special which will help them twice and knock them backwards into the crowd. After a few frames the crowd will bounce them back to roughly where they were. While they are bouncing back to you use your double jumping kick again which will throw them back into the crowd etc etc
I was probably the most hyped person in the whole entire world when The Rocketeer was coming out for the SNES. After I got it, I was the most disappointed person in the whole entire world. I remember refusing to rent it from Blockbuster and swore to myself it was gonna be a masterpiece, so I saved up and bought it. God I regret that purchase.
I missed out on the golden Era of SNES. My siblings and I got an NES in 1988. We begged and pleaded for an SNES when it came out, but never got one until 1995. A year later the N64 came out, but I didn't get my hands on one of those until 1999.
You basically pinpointed my whole childhood in one video. It's insane how many games I used to have that came out in 1992. I guess my brother went crazy buying stuff that year, probaby my dad got some salary bonus or something that year. I was really brought back watching this vid.
Hell yeah. Gonna have that Top Gear song in my head all day. I saw a video not too long ago where a Brazilian fighter/boxer came out to that track as their entrance music. So awesome.
I played the hell out of Another World, bought the PS4 & Vita versions from Limited Run games. But I think I played more of Skuljagger that came out in late '92, love that game still today !!!
I have played very few of these and don't own any of them but the one I probably want the most is super mariokart; having only played it on a snes mini at a friends house.
My old neighbor had Ys 3 for the SNES in 1992, and for Christmas she gave it to me that year. I know Ys 3 gets a lot of negativity, but I love that game, it holds a ton of nostalgia for me and I always return to it.
Great game review video John. Played most of these games back in the early 90s when had unlimited time on hand like Super EDF, Axelay, Zelda 3, Mickey, SF 2, FF2, Mystic Quest, Top Gear. These are great games and didn't cost millions to make taking hundreds of hours to play through.
Top Gear was all the rage here in South America!!! It has a silly glitch: if you end a race by crashing into the metal columns of the finish line, you'll get points for the place you finished + the next position (i.e.: you finish 1st and 2nd, so you get points for the 1st and 2nd position).
Axelay is amazing BUT, it didn't actually use Mode 7! It used Mode 1 and 2 layers for the scrolling. Konami pulled out a lot of visual tricks for this one.
LTTP was my favorite from the list that I played in '92 as a kid. I remember I had the game before having a snes to play it on. The anticaption to eventually play it definitely burned in me. Other mentions from me are SF2, Super Adventure Island, Rival Turf, Super Mario Kart, and TMNT4. I'd eventually become an rpg buff in the following years, '92 was a pretty memorable year from my childhood.
The only game from this list I actually played, as in, get into the most, was Super Star Wars. The bosses were so fun to fight, but they were hard as hell to finish. As for Legend of Zelda, we never actually learned how to play it, we even had some difficulty in traversing the map and we never knew where we should have gone next.
Oh 1992 What a year . I finally got my Super NES for Christmas with Super Mario World and I couldn't be happier. My mom also got me TMNT 3 and Ninja Gaiden 2 for NES I didn't ask for them but I accepted them anyway. On New years eve my mom got me Street Fighter 2 I went to my cousins house who got a Super NES for Christmas like me and we spent all day and night playing Street Fighter 2 until my mom came to pick me to go home on New Year's Day.
I picked up a Snes mini when it came out but haven't really gotten around to trying it out. I never had a Snes back in the day though. I switched from Amiga 500 to PC to play Doom .
Even though I'm a 92 baby I love me some old systems I mostly played the Sega Genesis as a kid it wasn't until much later I played the Super Nintendo thanks too Nintendo re releasing the Mini and I got too experience some of my favorites Super Mario all stars plus world and Donkey Kong Countrys,Castle Vania 4,Aladdin,Super Mario Kart and Star Fox are my favorites
so many bangers on this list I wouldn't know which ones to highlight in my comment! TMNT 4 was amazing we blew through that game the first day we had it, but still kept coming back to it, definitely the best one in the series!! street fighter 2, I have so many memories of playing the game with my uncle he was absolutely a beast at the game! mystic quest was alright, but the battle theme had no business being as good as it was! I remember rival turf being fun, IDK if I was as into the sequels, though.
1992 was just ridiculous for video games: - TMNT IV - my favourite beat-em-up on the system - Mario Kart - my favourite racing game on the system - Street Fighter 2 - such a class fighting game - Legend of Zelda - my favourite SNES game period! And on the Sega Genesis side of the pool, Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2?! What a year to be a young gamer with some disposable income!! :D

My favorite was Mystical Ninja. Recently played the Goemon SNES series translated and loved them all.
I love playing Super Mario Kart was my number 1 favorite SNES Game of All-Time that I play it so much when I was a 7 year old child since 2008.
Great video!! Saw another video recently explaining how Axelay uses mode 1 and not mode 7!... I also never knew that! Keep it up!
So many memories when I was 7-9 playing a lot of those games miss 😢my snes I gotta get another one ❤❤❤!!!
The background in Axelay actually isn't mode 7 which is even more impressive. Also my favorite game in this list is hands down is The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
This is why the donkey Kong series will always be my favorite games ever. It brings me back to such a simple time in life.
My fav was Zelda a Link to the past, 2nd was Contra 3.
Best summer of my life was 1992! Final Fantasy 2, Street Fighter 2, Pilot Wings ruled my nights!
I will sing this song until the day I die:
Legend of the Mystical Ninja is one of the greatest SNES games ever made.
I still love video games but it was something special to have your friends over and fighting over whos up next.
So awesome.
For me; Krusty's Super Fun House, Home Alone 2, NCAA Final Four Basketball, Prince Of Persia, Q*Bert 3, RoboCop 3, Strike Gunner and Super Scope 6,
Lots of good games here.
One game that came out in 1992 not mentioned in video, Aero fighters. Boss music rocks, good two player game, & all kinds of pilots to pick from.
My older cousin had Joe & Mac and Pit Fighter for the Sega Genesis. I played both a ton on his Genesis. I actually liked the Sega Pit Fighter.
I had forgotten how many great games were launched on the Snes in 1992 but wow. I really enjoyed "Legend Of The Mystical Ninja" along with many more.
Shadowrun is the hidden gem of the entire Snes library, it's a damn shame it doesn't get more recognition.
Konami pulled out a lot of visual tricks for this one.
interesting!
@@Vulpas because my brother and I played SNES games together as kids. I did really play a lot of Star Wars on SNES though.
I remember sinking hours into super wrestlemania with my friends. Used to love that and it had completely slipped my mind. Same thing for Joe and mac
I still play Turtles in Time all of the time, along with all the other classics. I've never grown out of the Snes!!
Kick.. punch… it’s all in the mind! Love the Parappa the Rapper reference, Riggs!
I was hooked by the title alone! Bravo!
I had FF Mystic Quest when I first got my brother and I got out SNES. Fun game and the soundtrack is awesome
Adventure Island is underrated
My fave was final fantasy mystic Quest that year, love the game so much, the music, still have the game actually.
Joe and Mac is awesome. I always had to gi to my cousins house to play it. I got it from them, so now I have it.
Thank you for reminding me how awesome Mickey's Magical Quest is.
so many bangers on this list I wouldn't know which ones to highlight in my comment!
1992 was just ridiculous for video games:
- TMNT IV - my favourite beat-em-up on the system
- Mario Kart - my favourite racing game on the system
- Street Fighter 2 - such a class fighting game
- Legend of Zelda - my favourite SNES game period!
And on the Sega Genesis side of the pool, Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2?! What a year to be a young gamer with some disposable income!! :D
I remember playing Joe and Mac with my cousin as a youngster - so many good memories.
