    As a Pole, I admire the traditional ways every culture has. We make our pickles on the floor, prepping everything in big bowls, just as this one. It is a job for multiple people, since those bowls and jars wouldn’t fit on the table, as those pickles are meant to last for a whole year for the whole family. And I remember walking with bare feet as a child on a cabbage that we were preparing for sauerkraut in a big barrel. When I’m making it now I use a giant wooden hammer to smack it down, but I still can’t imagine moving everything onto the table, it’s just not the way I was built. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried kimchi before; personally, before I built a taste for it, I would gag and would feel queazy from just a whiff of it. My parents have always loved it and they would always try to eat it when we weren’t around. I love kimchi now and I even sell it, however, I understand that it does not have a pleasant smell and it is not for everybody; I too have had to apologize to my boyfriend who feels the same way I felt about fermented kimchi when I was younger.

    • @inspiredbytif
      @inspiredbytif 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      With that said.. don’t think that apologizing in advanced for a minor inconvenience due to the other person’s unawareness is wrong, but bashing these aspects and making it seem like people are crazy or wrong for following culinary traditions, that is completely wrong.

      @Hooman Being i’m not asian, in fact i’m black and my parents are from the caribbean. but it’s extremely normal for food to be prepared on the floor or outside. it’s normal to see women and children sitting on the floor with a mortar and pestal grinding spices or leaves, or for food to be cooked completely outside over a fire rather than inside on the stove back home. it’s not weird, nor is it unsanitary as long as the floor, the hands and the food is clean.

I prefer wipes over water tbh, but that’s because i also shower frequently. People who only wipe with TP are crazyyyyy idk who does that

      Also people who say gross to the floor just don’t know cultural differences.A lot of Americans wear their outside shoes indoors, and/or have dogs and cats that can track dirt inside to the kitchen area. So with that in mind I can see someone being grossed out about it, but what they forgot is the cultural difference and that not EVERYONE does what they do. I personally prefer no shoes indoors because if I’m breaking my back mopping I’d like it to be clean 😂

      My best friend who is Japanese took me to this temple on New Years back in 2015 and since it was the first time I've ever been to Japan I felt so out of place. But despite me not fitting in, the people there where really nice. I then decided to start learning Japanese in 2019 because my best friend wanted to take me to Japan again to visit landmarks. I learned a few basic sentences but I pretty much forgot them all later on. I still have a goal of learning Japanese one day. But it's like you said, seeing other people's cultures and traditions is a very cool experience.

    I’m Korean, and I’m genuinely surprised that making kimchi “on the floor” is such a big deal? It’s actually shocking to me that it’s regarded as something weird to other people since it’s the normal way it is done all the time hahaha. I never would’ve thought it would be portrayed as gross or unusual lol Y’all who are grossed out should try making big batches of kimchi on a table with a chair and experience how limiting doing it that way is 🤷
    edit:
    so to explain, kimchi is usually ( i mean traditionally) made in a hugeeee bowl about 70-90 cm in diameter (and you need multiple of these bowls), with maybe 10-30? cabbages (this depends on the person who’s making it, but usually we make kimchi to last a whole season or even more months) so it requires a lot of arm force and strength to even mix the paste in, marinate, and tossing around the cabbages and etc. This would be really restricting to do placed on the table. hence why we place the bowl on the floor and do our asian kimchi squat to make and toss around our cabbages in the huge bowls lol. And no, we don’t roll our cabbages around on the floor directly, that’s not clean!! I have tremendous respect and love to all the mothers and grandmothers who gather together to make kimchi for the whole family. It really is hard work. My mother would always have cramps all over her body after a long day of making kimchi. And also we are all very good at the asian kimchi squat because we have to do it so often haha But yeah, I hope this clears up some confusion!
