I'm a sugar addict. I've tried to quit multiple times and usually after a few days or maybe a few weeks I'd fall off the wagon and binge eat sweets. I'm currently eating carnivore which has helped with the cravings a lot. I'm about seventy days clean. Anyone who claims you can't be addicted to sugar is crazy. Dairy, I can take or leave it.
Have been off cigarettes and alcohol (thanks to AA) for 42 years, but have struggled with my addiction to sugar all my life. I'm now off it again (27 days) and the first week, as always, was hell. Thanks for taking this on in a video. Your analogy about people who don't easily addict, and their disbeliving attitude toward those of us who do, was spot on. And regarding my own current umpteenth attempt to live sugar free, THIS TIME I am applying the AA wisdom of One Day at a Time. Anyone can live without sugar for one day. I certainly can. And when tomorrow becomes today, it's just one more day to take it one day at a time.
I can totally relate...19yrs clean. I've been trying for years to live sugar-free, and I've often wondered why there isn't a meeting for people wanting to kick their addiction to sugar. Anyway, I just wanted to wish you success! May God bless you.

I was a sugar addict, hiding sugar, eating bags, boxes, a couple of family size packages eating it all. I’ve fallen asleep eating and experienced many sugar hangovers. I thank God for discovering Keto and then Carnivore and letting go of sweet taste. I thank God first for leading me, then for all of the great Truths brought to me through Dr Berry and all the others in this space.
It is absolutely an addiction. I’m a cancer survivor, had a couple of very scary diverticulitis flare ups and lifelong depression and I know that a proper diet is the way to keep me healthy. But this week I decided to compromise and told myself that as long as I don’t have any donuts that I deserved to have sushi and pizza. I told myself that ground beef and eggs would both be cheaper and healthier but I didn’t listen. Now I’m short on money for rent because I spent all my money on junk food that I couldn’t afford to begin with. It’s absolutely ridiculous that I’ve managed to resist drugs and alcohol my whole life but I’m screwing up my life with pizza.
I feel your pain (well, ulcerative colitis, chronic depression and add) it's amazing how I rationalize making the same mistakes over and over. I think we could form a support group just from people in the comments here. It's definitely hard to get any recognition/support for this! Everyone was certainly cheering on my alcohol recovery lol, but perfectly caring friends/family line up to shove pizza and cookies in my face as soon as they notice I'm trying to abstain...
@@amyc.peters1064 Yeah, I’ve made it clear to my co-workers what my issues, goals and intentions are, yet they tease me with a box of donuts and laugh at me when I give in and eat them. It really is a tragic state that our society considers this acceptable. I’ve worked in bars where I was pressured to drink as well. They would respect someone who says they’re an “alcoholic in recovery”, but when I said I need to “cut back”, it wasn’t good enough and they’d bully me into it.
Thank you for taking the trouble to make this video. I just feel so ashamed that I can’t control my appetite. Initially I lost 28 pounds eating carnivore, and I felt great but then I “fell off the wagon“ and I just can’t seem to get back on it. I live alone so it’s easy for me to hide the food I buy. When anyone asks me how my carnivore diet is going I just kind of put them off. I’m too ashamed to tell them the truth that I’ve been eating way too much sugar again. I have at least been fortunate enough that in 18 months I have only regained about 8 pounds. It’s hard to watch the videos of people who have remained carnivore for years. I admire them and wish that I could emulate them but it’s difficult to even watch the videos anymore because I feel like I’m so worthless that I can’t even control my appetite. You have helped me feel better about it all and feel some hope that if I at least keep trying I will eventually succeed.
I quit years of addiction to cigarettes and alcohol, but quitting sugar is so much harder. I have worse withdrawals after a couple of days of no sugar, then the withdrawals i had from the other addictions.
With cigarettes you have to be a minimum age, with sugar, you just have to have a pulse and no age minimum. And it starts wi most with he baby bottle milk
Me too! It's all around me all the time, and every cell in my body tries to tell me I'm dying if I don't have it it's ridiculous. So lots of stopping and starting so far. I keep trying though, because I did it for a month 5 years ago and was amazed. The mental health benefits alone, but so many physical issues that I've accepted as just a part of living were falling away.
For me, I need to get a hold of myself I allow people to talk to me into things at the worst times. I started keto in 2017 and then carnivore 2019. I started at 195 pounds. The lowest I’ve gotten because of my sugar addiction was 179. I’ve been bouncing around between 195 and 179 for seven years.

I have stopped smoking, drinking, recreational drugs, I AM AN ABSOLUTE BORE!! Foods has been an absolute drug for me. Behaving no differently than "common" addicts. I am a strong human being and have spent my life overcoming and improving. Carb addiction is like a monster

I got 16 minutes into this interview and got a massive craving for sugar because of all the junk foods being mentioned. I literally almost got up and drove myself to buy ice cream and chocolate and donuts and cake and I had to talk myself down so that I don’t ruin my 9 day carnivore journey. I’m terrified of my addiction, just being honest.

a safe alternative to soft ice cream is ....put canned coconut milk into a regular glass contaner, let cool in the fridge over night...put half a cup into a bowl and add sesemie seeds or little bit of blue berries (under 5 grams) for the desert. Let me know how it goes!!
I’m a sugar addict. Been keto and carnivore for 7 years which for long periods is great. Until I crack or “just have a bit”, and then over indulge, feel like crap and even sometimes give myself a fever with sugar poisoning. I know I’m an addict because I actually hate the stuff. I hate that it’s everywhere and that I still want it even though I know how terrible it is for me. Sugar is a potential poison, it’s addictive and it should carry a label saying so.
I hate the word remission! The word suggests that everyone is just waiting for it to come back. The word is reversal! It’s gone, and unless someone starts eating what they did before, it won’t come back. It’s like saying I had a bruise on my leg and it’s in remission, when if I hit my leg again, I’ll get a bruise.
I agree with you .. When I hear people who recovered from cancer state that they're in remission I negate it with words of blessings and full recovery.. they've been conditioned for it to come back..
I don’t agree. I’m a type 2 diabetic and always will be. It hasn’t gone away and I will have to eat very low carb to keep my blood glucose in normal range
Sorry I can’t agree! I was T2D. Went low carb (less than 20g a day) in 7/18. A1C dropped to normal (5.1) w/in 3 months! I reversed it by eating just good healthy food, kick the carbs. You CAN do it too! You do not HAVE to do that, it’s a personal CHOICE!! Buck up &choose good health instead of foods (or amounts of it) that are making you ill!🤗

All the shit they tell you about food is just sales hype, even 3 meals a day and I need some carbs to regulate my type 2 diabetes(type is a different game) You have to eat low carb because you are human, same as all the rest of us, what you have probably done it distroy your bodies ability to moderate reactions to sugar and will probably have huge insulin spikes and craving if you picked a couple of strawberries out the garden, but that doesn't mean that many who go back to the correct human diet aren't capable of eating a strawberry once in a blue moon when in season. Even bears eat berries in season(but that's to put weight on for hybernation, which we don't do, so we don't need to glut of fruits and berries)
I agree!!! I am not putting that label on myself!! Yeah my a1c was 7.5 but it’s dropping and it IS reversible. I hate when people say once a diabetic always a diabetic. It’s an excuse to eat bad.
Big sugar makes way too much money for sugar addiction to ever be recognized. I mean people still think cholesterol causes heart disease, when it’s actually sugar.
I am a sugar/starch addict. The Proper Human Diet has saved me, I not only no longer have the cravings I am actually turned off by those food ( 6 month carnivore). Would family members leave bottles of booze all around the house when their loved one is trying to get sober? I hope not, the chips and snacks are the same thing to us. Be kind.
I've addressed this at my job. Was told too bad...live with it. Candy and sweets stink up the place. And when people cook their food in the brk room. Horrible!! No kindness in this place. Was told by boss she struggles every day. Smh
Im a sugar addict as well. It is so hard once I eat one thing with sugar, Im off the carnivore diet. Right now Im ok and happily on carnivore. Feeling great as I should.
I’m another one who is a recovering alcoholic (40+ years sober) and 29 years away from cigarettes, but my addiction to sugar is way worse than either of those addictions, the cravings are awful and I have not been able to quit sugar!
Standing in the kitchen cutting up my pork belly for work later and hearing this talk about the conference in May in my home country makes me happy. BUT.... I know that "sugar" will be said a million times but the truth about what that word encompasses will be bypassed over and over again. When the diabetic nurse that's too fat for her chair and has weepy bandaged legs sits there and tells my husband to have wholemeal toast with low fat spread fro breakfast(a meal he's never eaten, so increasing his food window) and the dentist has a chart on the wall showing how many sugar cubes are in a variety of drinks but not orange juice or even milk and telling you to not have "too much" sugar but not explaining crisps(chips) will stick to your teeth and hang around for hours depositing sugar directly onto your teeth. No one has the balls to show just what sugar is really in. No one is explaining what the body does with all these carbs. I sit on my till and watch mother's putting pouches of fruit puree through with corn puffs flavoured with apple or puffed carrot sticks and mini rice cakes with natural strawberry flavour. Their whole shop is just repackaged sugar, even the fruits and veg(that they cover in sugar sauces like pir pir, bbq, teriyaki) and now a lot of the meat is drowned in these sauces too. It's all garbage. I'm lucky enough to of had a home economics/biology teacher who was hot on this even back in the 90''s and she peeked my interest in all this. They need to go back to basics and teach about what the body sees when we give it food and what it does with all the different components, it makes me mad to hear lies being repeated like it's truth.
Sugar addiction is terrible. I've managed to cut back over time and some of the sweets I used to crave, I can no longer tolerate. But I still periodically have strong cravings and sometimes I give in.
1. PLEASE try Carnivore for at least two weeks! 🙏 2. The more metabolically unstable you are, the longer it will take to get metabolically stable. 3. But it’s WORTH IT! 🎉🎉🎉
If sugar isn't addictive, then why do most go through withdrawls when they stop their consumption? I can say first hand that I had headaches, gastrointestinal chaos, foggy mental capacity, hot flashes, cold flashes, anxiety, depression etc. Gee, kinda sounds like kicking a hard drug to me.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking on this subject. I doubt it will ever be accepted as SUGAR addiction, because that would mean, they would have to remove it from all the food products. If the damages of Sugar should ever be accepted, you can just imagine what that would do to the food industry, if at the same time they should acknowledge the addiction to sugar as an official diagnosis.
I eat a high protein diet. I quit coffee 8 months ago. I quit all grains 4 months ago. I quit alcohol 1 month ago. I’ve spent my entire adult life trying to quit candy and can’t go more than 2-3 days without it. Ugh! Help!
So, I have this problem. Started with many things in my life across the spectrum of addiction. Carbs are the latest with caffeine. Going through the “flu” as we speak. The carnivore life is very attractive to me and I have begun. Currently eating BBB&E, when my supply of cheese and coffee are gone I’ll stop those. It is do or die, as I’ve tried everything else and need to lose 100 lbs. At this point I’m all ears. Keep it up, I need all the help I can get.
Hi FB. Choose Do and live. About 6 years ago i started walking everyday since i was too out of shape to ride my bicycle, a very nice mountainbike that i used to enjoy riding very much 20 years ago. Last year i pulled the bike out for some short rides. This past Saturday I rode over 50 miles, something i try to do about every other weekend now, a feat i thought i would never ever be able to do even when i was young . Choose a nice route/routine and begin walking like you are going somewhere every day and twice on sunday (hah, ya know what i mean). I think they call it zone 2 cardiovascular activity. I chose a route that takes me over an hour to walk, half of which is through the woods for some nature. I have lost 50 lbs. in two years now and have realized that i am not done yet. But the 50 lbs. are in fact realized. I just wanted to get healthy and be able to do things again. You sound like you are off to a good start understanding what you need to do for yourself. I dress for the weather. Winter days are some of my favorite walks bc i know i am the only one out there enjoying the crisp fresh air. Choose do, and don't look back except for the gratitude doing will bring you.
I’m in NA and we are works in progress. At any social event there are always sugary treats. 12 step programs know the solution is mind, spirit and body. But the last, the body, seems to be the final piece to recovery. Luckily I’ve gotten that message! It has made my A recovery so much richer !

I quite sugar and carbs 44 days ago, for the first 30 days I felt like I was in rehab. The sugar cravings were out of this world. I was trying to find as much information as possible on the withdrawal symptoms just to keep my sanity. The feelings of anxiety, depression among 10 other uncomfortable sensations are indescribable. You can’t have support because almost everyone around will tell you to have something sweet to feel better. It is fascinating how we use sugar to soothe our emotional discomfort. It is a complex problem. For the first 30 days I was convinced that I would not be able to live without it. Just imagining life without sweets made feel suffocated within my own body. Finally on day 44 the withdrawal symptoms are gone. It is not easy to do this on your own. You need a lot of will power not to give in, especially if you go 100% carnivore and no coffee. Now I have written on a board all the symptoms of sugar withdrawals as a reminder in case I get tempted . I don’t want to experience them ever again.
@@Augustuty Hello, yes I still don’t eat sugar. Today is day 97. It is incredible what has happened. I don’t think I will be ever forget those cravings. I am also surprised that now when I think about any sugary treats that are artificially made, I get a strong and definite NO to not eat it. I can’t believe that one can be free from that. How are you doing? The rehabilitation struggle is definitely worth it.

@@Augustuty Since sugar was on my mind all the time, I would watch videos on IG of the most inventive desserts out there. Just watching would somehow satisfy that ill need for sweets. In the first month I would have minimal amounts of grated cheese and diary with the meat. That helped too. Going for a long walk is good if possible. I wrote down every single negative consequence of having sugar and how that impacts my health on a big board so I could see that daily. The bouts of anxiety and depression as you go off sugar are thru the roof. Just reminding myself that I don’t want to experience those again would stop me. You see fruit is not as addictive as man made candies and sweets. Occasionally, I’ve had some cherries and watermelon( low oxalate fruit) after day 50 and I was okay with not having it the next day. So if having small portion or fruit will aid you, go for it. Sometimes I would call a friend who lives far away and tell them about my sugar fantasies just to get it out of my system, but never anyone close who was willing to make it happen. This is very much a psychological struggle so it is important to address it internally. We love sugar because it is a substitute for connection so even if you are lonely is it good to write down the stuff that you desire instead of eating. This is a complex battle really so you need to think of strategies that are going to be helpful just for you. If you can, it is good to immerse yourself in some activity even if that activity can be breathing and observing your thoughts. I would be fully present with my hours of anxiety and chemical depression until they went away. Knowing and understanding what you’re dealing with is key….. cold showers or showers in general. I would watch YT videos regarding the carnivore diet just to reenforce a healthy way of eating intellectually. I recommend entire carnivore community plus Sally K Norton. Her work on oxalates is a must to navigate oxalate dumping, not just sugar withdrawal. Also eating sufficient amount of protein and fat - without this it is impossible to succeed. Hope this helps 😊
Thank you for this, I am absolutely struggling with sugar addiction! I know I will regret it right after my last bite, but I still eat it. I can do well all week, then the weekend comes and everyone is home and eating the yummy stuff. 😢
Sugar addiction is very very real. I have tried to stay on Carnivore/ketovore diet for a few months now. It took me a month to get rid of the everything made with grains and everything packaged. Its now down to the 1chocolate bar and 3 icecream bars I consume every evening. Because of those items I cant lose the 55 pound I need to lose. The overweight has now put me in pred diabetic zone and borderline bloodpressure zone. I have taken on an evening cleaning job for the purpose of getting rid of that time frame of sugar consumtion. The last 10 years I have seen my weight rise. Used to be slim and fit. At 68 I have had it with the overweight. Its been a struggle to get rid of that last bit of sweets I consume in the evening so changing my evening routine will get rid of that for good.
I thank you Dr. Berry for your honest approach to extolling the benefits of the proper human diet lifestyle. At 72 years of age I am free! Sweets were always my downfall. Admitting that it was actually an addiction was difficult for this retired nurse. I have many more pounds to lose but I'm down 26 pounds now. Nearing my 90 days. God bless you and your lovely wife.
I am in and out of the proper human diet community because I can’t even afford $5 every month depending on my budget needs. I know I am sugar addicted November through December is the hardest months because of holiday gatherings, January I was finally able to get on track with bbbe, had a few slip ups in February but still been good enough to lower my A1c from 6.0 to 5.8, unfortunately being around people that don’t understand is hard, Wednesday night Bible study I usually end up sitting between guys that love cookies, swiss rolls, snack cakes, sure I can say no until I get home, but still on my brain for days even after binge eating after getting home sometimes, thankfully doing better and Wednesday night snacking is getting less and less, dealing with a old pet family dog is stressful, eating more beef is helping, having pork king pork rinds around when I’m really struggling also is helping
Thank you so much for this! It's true about carb addiction. If I eat carbs or sugary foods, I literally have lost my "off switch*, I cannot sense when I am full. I simply want more and more. It takes days for me to successfully reason with myself in order to stop. When I am consuming the carnivore foods, I am easily satiated, and am not obsessed with food. I fast 36 hours every other day, and try to stay on the keto carnivore lifestyle. I have released 80 pounds in the past 18 months. Sugar addiction has not gone away. I have to remain vigilant.
I think Dr. Unwin has been following me around over the last few days. As I started watching this video and scarfing down cinnamin pinwheels (yes plural). She was so spot on regarding the cravings. I want to blame the poor eating on the steroid injection I had a couple of weeks ago to control my asthma. I just need to stay out of the store when I leave work at 6 AM after being up all night, but I hear the calling of the sugar as my car passes every store.
That’s so true about food cravings being an almost uncontrollable drive. I remember I went through a phase of around a year, where once a month, the day before my period started, I would find myself in the Sonic drive-thru ordering an Oreo Sonic Blast. I never even decided to go. It was as if my car was on auto-pilot. It really was quite unexpected because I pride myself on being a very deliberate person. I even used to joke that my body took over without my consent. Fortunately, once I became conscious that it was happening, I stopped doing it. But you know, often, other things replaced it. It’s helped me though to tackle one thing at a time. I haven’t had a soda in 3 years and I cut out sugar in my coffee a year ago and half-sweet tea about 6 months ago so now I just drink water and unsweetened coffee and tea with a rare, occasional glass of milk. I’m totally adapted to that now. Never get ice cream anymore either. I am currently working on the french fries addiction. Thank God I don’t have to worry about dairy. I’m fine with just a few bites of cheese once a week or so and don’t want more than that.
On the weed thing, I was having one spliff every night, kind of out of habit. But after time, I realised it was having very little effect. So I just didn't buy any more. Now, the only time I might have one is every few weeks when an old friend visits. And guess what - it blows my head off! 😂 It's like being a teenager again trying it for the first time. So, given the harm it undoubtedly does, I would suggest that you either dump it completely, or save it for very rare occasions when you'll really enjoy it. 👍
I could have a drink and then wait a year to drink again and never think about it. But 3 days without flour and sugar I pull my hair out and get a knot in my back from the tension I hold.
If you’ve ever had chocolate raw by itself it’s disgusting. Hardly even palatable. That’s why the edible snacks are 95% sugar and milk. So really what people are after is a solidified chunk of sugar milk. Also it just dawned on me, if we’re carnivore we don’t need cupboards anymore 🤔

Sugar has been worked into beautiful presentations. Cakes, candies, glazes, etc. The drug is shown as artwork and celebrated. Add some chocolate and people are helpless.😢 Break the spell!
Yes it's very real, I couldn;t quit sugar or carbs no matter what I knew they did to our health. I finally got leaky gut, gluten intoI & malabsorption from my decades of sugar/carbs & was forced to quit it all and I still miss it.
Yes, when folks say they are over their carb addiction after 3 weeks carnivore, I call BS to that! I have been keto since June 2023 with no sweeteners, and strict carnivore for 180 days and carbs still call me! Middle Tennessee Rita ❤
Most psychological experts are absolute quacks and pharmaceutical shills. Of course, they’re not gonna say there’s a connection between food and mental illness because it is that very premise that keeps them all in business. Therefor to address that food affects psychology would put them out of business.

I have passed your good words on to my adult daughter living abroad, and my roommate. Both were shocked just how hard it was / is to break the sugar addition, if possible at all. I know purposely fall off the wagon about every other week an head to the bakery for an almond croissant. Then back on the wagon. In my opinion and experience, sugar is harder to beat than tobacco.
I hate my need for sugar. It must be what a drug addict must be like. I try to eat healthy, but recently read that bread and processed food have a lot of sugar in them. 😮
I used to be there. You can cut out carbs and after the withdrawal goes away, the cravings disappear. You can regain self-control and a clear mind. My cravings didn't go away until I went carnivore and obstained from stevia. It is hard but it works and the freedom is worth it!
Gosh, in central London, the Easter Eggs were out in Tesco (a national grocery store) right after Boxing Day (Dec 27). They didn't even wait for Valentine's Day to be over. That's how screwed up our society is when it comes to the marketing power and profitability of sugar. It's insane when you think about it. Can't believe how it was under my nose the whole time.
I found in raising my children the saddest part was the peer pressure on stupid holidays! Big stores plaster all that garbage right at the entry of the stores! My youngest are 51 years old and I was alone in my journey when I refused to get my 4 kids in that dungeon tunnel! But I was torn a lot of the time! Tradition and happy apple pie. It was sad but none of my children have weight problems and neither do I.
So true. A family member tried to make me feel crazy because my toddler at 2 had NOT eaten at McDonalds. A teacher told me a year or 2 later (after his kindergarten year) she had sneaked and given him sugar like that was funny
Former sugar addict here… but I’ve realized my problem is more an addiction to dopamine hits. I remember a time I was able to stick to avoiding carbs many years ago, and I replaced it with another addiction. Exercise. I would do a HIIT workout in the morning, then midday go run a 5k distance on a trail, then take a martial arts class or go to the rock climbing gym in the evening. Now I’ve been carnivore for almost a year, and I feel great after my morning HIIT workout, but I really notice my addiction after that (I don’t crave sugar anymore, but I crave activity that hits the reward center). So I have to use extra will power to sit at my desk and work. I’ve began using time blocking to help. And now it’s time for me to get back to my desk and start working.
I used to struggle with alcohol. If I stopped alcohol I had to have sweets. The first week was always the hardest. I now can go easily without either but I know that I am still a sugarholic.
I think the problem is not helped by the ideas of a ‘balanced’ diet and ‘healthy’ foods. There is no consensus on what foods are depicted exactly by these terms. ‘Balanced’ suggests that some sugars are acceptable and the word ‘healthy’ is written all over ultra processed high carbohydrate food packages.
I feel there's a hormonal component to sugar/carb addiction. As a child and young adult, I could take or leave sugar. I would take good home baked bread over sugary sweets. As I got older the sugar addiction started kicking in. I did low carb to lose weight and where sugar still wasn't such a big deal, once I cut out breads, pasta, taters and such, I did fine without them. Just fine. But, over time with all the offerings of sugar, thinking no biggie because I could never eat much sugary stuff, I would have a little. Now, sugar is my hangup. I can go without bread. But, I will hard crave sugar. Feels hopeless. I've gotten off it before, but everyone else in the house refuses to get on the same page. They think I'm crazy for claiming we need to get it out of the house. Their opinion is that it's my problem and I need to just not eat it.
This holiday season, Im going to only eat ground beef, eggs and sardines for 2 weeks before Thanksgiving and Christmas, then have a ribeye and bacon for these meals❤
Yeah ice cream is mine too. Yes on the hiding it. Or use the excuse to treat my granddaughter and me get some too. Sabotage myself ..smh. I'm 5 days clean...AGAIN!!
"buy with cash" "hide the wrappers and throw them out" -- OMG I thought I was the only one who did this! And I'm single, so there is no one else to track me. I was actually hiding it from *myself*. Any therapist would have a field day with that. I also had the habit of stopping at the store on the way home for a little goodie after a long day's work and eating all of it so that there would be no "evidence" after that day. Yikes! The only way I could break that habit was to willpower myself home where I would stuff myself with organic grass-fed hot dogs. That did seem to work. Been keto/carnivore for the last 6 month and down 15 pounds, still have 3-4 pounds to go. I look great but I'm STILL craving carbs like rice noodles and chocolate and those unwrapped Starburst. 😥

I’m 68, I’m addicted to sugar and all its forms (starch). I stopped bread and potatoes and rice over a year ago but only recently gave up adding sugar to coffee and tea. All my blood work was normal for the first time in 3 or 4 years. But the thing that surprises me most is people’s reactions to it. People offer food as a form of love and hospitality and when you reject it for personal reasons they act as if you are rejecting them. It’s been the hardest part of going sugar free. Know I’m in trouble when I’m looking at the clock an hour after I ate and wanting that treat that I’ve conditioned myself to get. I set a timer for the next meal and avert my attention to something constructive.
I have a purple house dress( Cadbury) color and each time I see it … chocolate comes to mine.Triggers me every time..WOW! I believe I shall get rid of it until control comes😮

To have said it: pretty sure sugar causes menopause and definitely dementia (type 3 diabetes) Healthy Keto has healthy fat, your brain is fat, hormones are cholesterol, fat is life. Personally mid 50s, regular cycle, no menopause symptoms. Sugar is deadly, it's a fact. It causes blindness, death, it's very statistically linked to dementia, Alzheimer's and more too. Doubtless it effects our sensitive reproductive systems. Makes more sense than fat doesn't it? Gluconeogenesis, your liver makes all the sugar (1-2 tsps) your body needs. Sugar is subsidized by the US government. $$$. Sugar is poisonous in large or continuous amounts. It hurts women more than men but it kills us all. Pretty sure it causes menopause too.
i cheated on bread once and it wouldnt stop calling my name, and reminding me to eat it.... it's so sinister i only managed to stop eating bread after 2 whole months
Since turning carnivore 3 months ago I haven't allowed even one thought to enter my mind about eating my old addictions. Entertaining thoughts is the first trigger. That said, I also live alone 30 minutes from a store which helps considerably.
I disagree with normalizing slips and falling off the wagon. Every time we relapse it reinforces in our brain that we cannot stay abstinent, and prolong the purgatory of withdrawal symptoms. Emotional maturity and freedom from physical addiction comes when we ask people for help BEFORE we relapse This is why 12Step group are so effective. we call upon friends in the program if we are having cravings or want to eat emotionally The person we call will help stop the behavior by saying things like “ please don’t hurt yourself again!” or “ talk to me for a while about what is causing you so much discomfort that you want to numb out with food.”
What a great video at a timely presentation for me personally. Im about 7 wks into full carnivore. I fit this slot. Had alcohol and cigarette issues. Beat those. Went on to marathon running until I physically had to give that up along with heavy exercise in general due to back issues. But here I am still dealing with a chocolate, coffee, and bakery goods addiction. I raised 7 kids. Three adult kids still at home. Husband who is sugar addicted, and 15 grandchildren who all enjoy their candy, holidays and all. Ive decided its MY problem. Its impossible to get a whole tribe of ppl to bend and accommodate me. And why would I want to draw that kind of attention on myself. Why would I want to cause everyone to walk on egg shells around me? I dont even bring it up. What difficult is having ppl become offended if you do not accept a helping of a sugar laden dessert. People who dont respect when you decline. They continue to chide you. I often dislike holidays and certain social gatherings bc of that. So I often avoid them.
What I would offer that might have been missed is that we need to invite ourself and others to embrace the post/neg consequences of our decisions. Do that mentally, emotionally, somatically. That gives us an unwavering experience holistically with what food does to the body-mind.
For me, it wasn’t necessarily sugar, but things like potato chips, french fries that type of thing that is very hard for me to give up I have and I, but it’s a struggle every day to not go back into old habits and get up in the morning and have a chocolate croissant or something like thatfrench fries for lunch
I used to have a big Costco bag of crisps and haribo in my car and at least two chocolate bars in my bag at any time until breast cancer diagnosis in 2013!! I was following the food pyramid advice of 6-11 servings of carbs per day 😮. Wake up call - I did my research and have been ketovore since 2017 having realised that I’ve been scammed-with a PhD in Human Nutrition- I thought I was doing the perfect diet with carbs, salads and low/no fat everything! I’m fairly 95% faithful to ketovore and doing well post metastatic diagnosis in 2021. Thank God I’m stable !!!
It’s not food addiction. It’s ultra processed food addiction. By design. And it is a drug that is in the form of food like substances. Also a key to overcoming sugar is not to have UPF. That’s the delivery system and is much more addictive than say in a homemade dessert with raw honey after a good protein and fat meal.
Oh wow I can totally relate I go to work and theres candy and chocolate donuts bags of chips nuts granola bars ... everyday everywhere I just dred going in if I eat just one piece of any of it im screwed I'll just keep goig taking handfuls of whatever I can cram in my face ugh then im miserable and sick blood sugar through the roof trying very hard to stick to keto so I just ate steak mushrooms and green beans with butter and good salt and pray I can bypass all the crap at work thank God I have a physically demanding job or I wouldn't be able to move 😢

A great conversation. I have recently seen a few videos on Keto as metabolic treatment for cancer (as an adjunct to standard of care). Interestingly, even people with the most aggressive of cancers (prognosis of 3 months to live), can find it ‘too hard’ to cut out the carbs citing social reasons often. To me, more evidence that there really is some addictive process I play here.
Thanks for mentioning dairy. When I quit dairy I used to open the fridge and look at the cheese. for 3 months! that's when cravings were finally gone and I started losing wait. amazing how my body still expected it (or my visits to the fridge were also a factor). 🙂
Which one? The sugar cane and rum trade going back 400 years or more. Everyone was addicted to sugar even back then. The British Navy used to give out a rum ration which was enough to get most people shitfaced and this is how they could reduce the food required to feed the sailors. After a few decades they figured out that they could water it down to save even more money with the same results. This watered down rum was called grog. It was still 100 proof at 50% alcohol. The full proof rum was 160 proof or more. The sugar could be converted to alcohol which was easier to store and sell. Always a market for whisky or rum so its been around as long as memory and you could blame a government but which one?

I’ve been carnivore since November and I still want sugar, I believe it’s because I can’t afford rib eyes that are fattier. I eat hamburger and add either bacon fat or beef tallow. But it doesn’t seem to fill me up….and I’ve been pretty depressed about it.
@@Amaryllis-4U Whole heartedly agree with this comment! We buy bacon in bulk since we live rurally, just the Walmart stuff, what we can afford. This last couple packages I told my hubby the bacon was so sweet it was almost sickening. I thought it was me, after 2 more packages (yeah I know I am slow...lol) we checked the ingredients. Walmart/Great Value bacon now contains 1 gram of sugar per slice!!!! Yes, PER SLICE!!! I was so grossed out we tossed it, I tossed all the fat I had saved from it and will be much more diligent in reading labels. As soon as we swapped I felt much less cravings and fuller. Always check the labels and watch out they may change them on you =/
The entire job of scientists employed by big food companies is to develop foods that maximize the “bliss point” (the point where the zombie lizard brain simply is not satiated no matter how much of the food you eat). The bliss point also drives you to seek that food over and over again. The medical community cannot add food addiction to the DSM and require insurance companies to pay for treatment because then insurance companies would be motivated to go after big food the way they’ve gone after big tobacco. In the meantime the only solution is total abstinence from all sweet tastes if you want the noise to stop.
It’s the one reason why I’m terrified to try carnivore again. I’m so addicted to carbs I don’t think I could ever imagine looking forward to thanksgiving or Christmas meals knowing I’d be staring at a steak. I want to be free of carb addiction but eating only meat forever makes me feel I’d never enjoy all the pleasures of eating ever again.
I’m a full blown sugar addict. It’s taken many falls off the wagon to admit that. I’ve started back on carnivore/ketovore yesterday and find myself obsessing over food, macros, addictions. If BBB&E was my magic answer I’d be 60lbs lighter. It’s an addiction issue.
Sugar addiction i think falls into a similar category as alcohol addiction. I also think that we are born with it just like some have tendency to be alcoholics. When i grew up sugar was not used a lot in our house. Yet I am the one in my family always trying to find sugar. It also has become more dominant since I started insulin a few years back.
I'm a sugar addict. I've tried to quit multiple times and usually after a few days or maybe a few weeks I'd fall off the wagon and binge eat sweets. I'm currently eating carnivore which has helped with the cravings a lot. I'm about seventy days clean. Anyone who claims you can't be addicted to sugar is crazy.

Have been off cigarettes and alcohol (thanks to AA) for 42 years, but have struggled with my addiction to sugar all my life. I'm now off it again (27 days) and the first week, as always, was hell. Thanks for taking this on in a video. Your analogy about people who don't easily addict, and their disbeliving attitude toward those of us who do, was spot on. And regarding my own current umpteenth attempt to live sugar free, THIS TIME I am applying the AA wisdom of One Day at a Time. Anyone can live without sugar for one day. I certainly can. And when tomorrow becomes today, it's just one more day to take it one day at a time.

6 years sober. I still cave to sugar on occasion. It was VERY hard to get and stay sober. But easy compared to getting sober from sugar.

I was a sugar addict, hiding sugar, eating bags, boxes, a couple of family size packages eating it all. I’ve fallen asleep eating and experienced many sugar hangovers.
I thank God for discovering Keto and then Carnivore and letting go of sweet taste.

It is absolutely an addiction. I’m a cancer survivor, had a couple of very scary diverticulitis flare ups and lifelong depression and I know that a proper diet is the way to keep me healthy. But this week I decided to compromise and told myself that as long as I don’t have any donuts that I deserved to have sushi and pizza. I told myself that ground beef and eggs would both be cheaper and healthier but I didn’t listen. Now I’m short on money for rent because I spent all my money on junk food that I couldn’t afford to begin with. It’s absolutely ridiculous that I’ve managed to resist drugs and alcohol my whole life but I’m screwing up my life with pizza.

I feel your pain (well, ulcerative colitis, chronic depression and add) it's amazing how I rationalize making the same mistakes over and over. I think we could form a support group just from people in the comments here. It's definitely hard to get any recognition/support for this! Everyone was certainly cheering on my alcohol recovery lol, but perfectly caring friends/family line up to shove pizza and cookies in my face as soon as they notice I'm trying to abstain...
@@amyc.peters1064 Yeah, I’ve made it clear to my co-workers what my issues, goals and intentions are, yet they tease me with a box of donuts and laugh at me when I give in and eat them. It really is a tragic state that our society considers this acceptable. I’ve worked in bars where I was pressured to drink as well. They would respect someone who says they’re an “alcoholic in recovery”, but when I said I need to “cut back”, it wasn’t good enough and they’d bully me into it.
Thank you for taking the trouble to make this video. I just feel so ashamed that I can’t control my appetite. Initially I lost 28 pounds eating carnivore, and I felt great but then I “fell off the wagon“ and I just can’t seem to get back on it. I live alone so it’s easy for me to hide the food I buy. When anyone asks me how my carnivore diet is going I just kind of put them off. I’m too ashamed to tell them the truth that I’ve been eating way too much sugar again. I have at least been fortunate enough that in 18 months I have only regained about 8 pounds. It’s hard to watch the videos of people who have remained carnivore for years. I admire them and wish that I could emulate them but it’s difficult to even watch the videos anymore because I feel like I’m so worthless that I can’t even control my appetite. You have helped me feel better about it all and feel some hope that if I at least keep trying I will eventually succeed.
I quit years of addiction to cigarettes and alcohol, but quitting sugar is so much harder. I have worse withdrawals after a couple of days of no sugar, then the withdrawals i had from the other addictions.
I agree! My bf has quit alcohol BUT cannot quit SUGAR. He at least will do keto sweets but still, I wish he would quit those as well.
With cigarettes you have to be a minimum age, with sugar, you just have to have a pulse and no age minimum. And it starts wi most with he baby bottle milk

Me too! It's all around me all the time, and every cell in my body tries to tell me I'm dying if I don't have it it's ridiculous. So lots of stopping and starting so far. I keep trying though, because I did it for a month 5 years ago and was amazed. The mental health benefits alone, but so many physical issues that I've accepted as just a part of living were falling away.
Of course sugar addiction is real! Very very real.

For me, I need to get a hold of myself I allow people to talk to me into things at the worst times. I started keto in 2017 and then carnivore 2019. I started at 195 pounds. The lowest I’ve gotten because of my sugar addiction was 179. I’ve been bouncing around between 195 and 179 for seven years.
These things aren't always obvious.

I got 16 minutes into this interview and got a massive craving for sugar because of all the junk foods being mentioned. I literally almost got up and drove myself to buy ice cream and chocolate and donuts and cake and I had to talk myself down so that I don’t ruin my 9 day carnivore journey. I’m terrified of my addiction, just being honest.

a safe alternative to soft ice cream is ....put canned coconut milk into a regular glass contaner, let cool in the fridge over night...put half a cup into a bowl and add sesemie seeds or little bit of blue berries (under 5 grams) for the desert. Let me know how it goes!!
I’m a sugar addict. Been keto and carnivore for 7 years which for long periods is great. Until I crack or “just have a bit”, and then over indulge, feel like crap and even sometimes give myself a fever with sugar poisoning.
I know I’m an addict because I actually hate the stuff. I hate that it’s everywhere and that I still want it even though I know how terrible it is for me.
Sugar is a potential poison, it’s addictive and it should carry a label saying so.
I hate the word remission! The word suggests that everyone is just waiting for it to come back. The word is reversal! It’s gone, and unless someone starts eating what they did before, it won’t come back. It’s like saying I had a bruise on my leg and it’s in remission, when if I hit my leg again, I’ll get a bruise.
I agree with you .. When I hear people who recovered from cancer state that they're in remission I negate it with words of blessings and full recovery..

Sorry I can’t agree! I was T2D. Went low carb (less than 20g a day) in 7/18. A1C dropped to normal (5.1) w/in 3 months! I reversed it by eating just good healthy food, kick the carbs. You CAN do it too! You do not HAVE to do that, it’s a personal CHOICE!! Buck up &choose good health instead of foods (or amounts of it) that are making you ill!🤗

You have to eat low carb because you are human, same as all the rest of us, what you have probably done it distroy your bodies ability to moderate reactions to sugar and will probably have huge insulin spikes and craving if you picked a couple of strawberries out the garden, but that doesn't mean that many who go back to the correct human diet aren't capable of eating a strawberry once in a blue moon when in season. Even bears eat berries in season(but that's to put weight on for hybernation, which we don't do, so we don't need to glut of fruits and berries)

I am a sugar/starch addict. The Proper Human Diet has saved me, I not only no longer have the cravings I am actually turned off by those food ( 6 month carnivore).
Would family members leave bottles of booze all around the house when their loved one is trying to get sober? I hope not, the chips and snacks are the same thing to us. Be kind.
I've addressed this at my job. Was told too bad...live with it. Candy and sweets stink up the place. And when people cook their food in the brk room. Horrible!! No kindness in this place. Was told by boss she struggles every day. Smh

Im a sugar addict as well. It is so hard once I eat one thing with sugar, Im off the carnivore diet. Right now Im ok and happily on carnivore. Feeling great as I should.
I’m another one who is a recovering alcoholic (40+ years sober) and 29 years away from cigarettes, but my addiction to sugar is way worse than either of those addictions, the cravings are awful and I have not been able to quit sugar!

Standing in the kitchen cutting up my pork belly for work later and hearing this talk about the conference in May in my home country makes me happy. BUT....
I know that "sugar" will be said a million times but the truth about what that word encompasses will be bypassed over and over again.
When the diabetic nurse that's too fat for her chair and has weepy bandaged legs sits there and tells my husband to have wholemeal toast with low fat spread fro breakfast(a meal he's never eaten, so increasing his food window) and the dentist has a chart on the wall showing how many sugar cubes are in a variety of drinks but not orange juice or even milk and telling you to not have "too much" sugar but not explaining crisps(chips) will stick to your teeth and hang around for hours depositing sugar directly onto your teeth.
No one has the balls to show just what sugar is really in. No one is explaining what the body does with all these carbs.
I sit on my till and watch mother's putting pouches of fruit puree through with corn puffs flavoured with apple or puffed carrot sticks and mini rice cakes with natural strawberry flavour.
Their whole shop is just repackaged sugar, even the fruits and veg(that they cover in sugar sauces like pir pir, bbq, teriyaki) and now a lot of the meat is drowned in these sauces too. It's all garbage.
I'm lucky enough to of had a home economics/biology teacher who was hot on this even back in the 90''s and she peeked my interest in all this. They need to go back to basics and teach about what the body sees when we give it food and what it does with all the different components, it makes me mad to hear lies being repeated like it's truth.
Sugar addiction is terrible. I've managed to cut back over time and some of the sweets I used to crave, I can no longer tolerate. But I still periodically have strong cravings and sometimes I give in.
You need to cut out sugar entirely in order for the cravings to go away.
The last fruit craving I had was yellow kiwis. Took a bite and spit it out. It was too sweet

If sugar isn't addictive, then why do most go through withdrawls when they stop their consumption? I can say first hand that I had headaches, gastrointestinal chaos, foggy mental capacity, hot flashes, cold flashes, anxiety, depression etc. Gee, kinda sounds like kicking a hard drug to me.

I doubt it will ever be accepted as SUGAR addiction, because that would mean, they would have to remove it from all the food products.
If the damages of Sugar should ever be accepted, you can just imagine what that would do to the food industry, if at the same time they should acknowledge the addiction to sugar as an official diagnosis.
I eat a high protein diet. I quit coffee 8 months ago. I quit all grains 4 months ago. I quit alcohol 1 month ago.
I’ve spent my entire adult life trying to quit candy and can’t go more than 2-3 days without it. Ugh! Help!
So, I have this problem. Started with many things in my life across the spectrum of addiction. Carbs are the latest with caffeine. Going through the “flu” as we speak. The carnivore life is very attractive to me and I have begun. Currently eating BBB&E, when my supply of cheese and coffee are gone I’ll stop those. It is do or die, as I’ve tried everything else and need to lose 100 lbs. At this point I’m all ears. Keep it up, I need all the help I can get.
Hi FB. Choose Do and live. About 6 years ago i started walking everyday since i was too out of shape to ride my bicycle, a very nice mountainbike that i used to enjoy riding very much 20 years ago. Last year i pulled the bike out for some short rides. This past Saturday I rode over 50 miles, something i try to do about every other weekend now, a feat i thought i would never ever be able to do even when i was young . Choose a nice route/routine and begin walking like you are going somewhere every day and twice on sunday (hah, ya know what i mean). I think they call it zone 2 cardiovascular activity. I chose a route that takes me over an hour to walk, half of which is through the woods for some nature. I have lost 50 lbs. in two years now and have realized that i am not done yet. But the 50 lbs. are in fact realized. I just wanted to get healthy and be able to do things again. You sound like you are off to a good start understanding what you need to do for yourself. I dress for the weather. Winter days are some of my favorite walks bc i know i am the only one out there enjoying the crisp fresh air. Choose do, and don't look back except for the gratitude doing will bring you.

12 step programs know the solution is mind, spirit and body. But the last, the body, seems to be the final piece to recovery.

I quite sugar and carbs 44 days ago, for the first 30 days I felt like I was in rehab. The sugar cravings were out of this world. I was trying to find as much information as possible on the withdrawal symptoms just to keep my sanity. The feelings of anxiety, depression among 10 other uncomfortable sensations are indescribable. You can’t have support because almost everyone around will tell you to have something sweet to feel better. It is fascinating how we use sugar to soothe our emotional discomfort. It is a complex problem. For the first 30 days I was convinced that I would not be able to live without it. Just imagining life without sweets made feel suffocated within my own body. Finally on day 44 the withdrawal symptoms are gone. It is not easy to do this on your own. You need a lot of will power not to give in, especially if you go 100% carnivore and no coffee. Now I have written on a board all the symptoms of sugar withdrawals as a reminder in case I get tempted . I don’t want to experience them ever again.

@@Augustuty Hello, yes I still don’t eat sugar. Today is day 97. It is incredible what has happened. I don’t think I will be ever forget those cravings. I am also surprised that now when I think about any sugary treats that are artificially made, I get a strong and definite NO to not eat it. I can’t believe that one can be free from that. How are you doing? The rehabilitation struggle is definitely worth it.

I still cannot go longer than 5 days without it. It is such a struggle and I cannot stop thinking about food all day and it seems impossible for me to go longer than that… But that feeling after eating lots of sugar and carbs is so horrible and I want to heal from this addiction so much that people like you motivates me to go on. @@Augustuty Since sugar was on my mind all the time, I would watch videos on IG of the most inventive desserts out there. Just watching would somehow satisfy that ill need for sweets. In the first month I would have minimal amounts of grated cheese and diary with the meat. That helped too. Going for a long walk is good if possible. I wrote down every single negative consequence of having sugar and how that impacts my health on a big board so I could see that daily. The bouts of anxiety and depression as you go off sugar are thru the roof. Just reminding myself that I don’t want to experience those again would stop me. You see fruit is not as addictive as man made candies and sweets. Occasionally, I’ve had some cherries and watermelon( low oxalate fruit) after day 50 and I was okay with not having it the next day. So if having small portion or fruit will aid you, go for it. Sometimes I would call a friend who lives far away and tell them about my sugar fantasies just to get it out of my system, but never anyone close who was willing to make it happen. This is very much a psychological struggle so it is important to address it internally. We love sugar because it is a substitute for connection so even if you are lonely is it good to write down the stuff that you desire instead of eating. This is a complex battle really so you need to think of strategies that are going to be helpful just for you. If you can, it is good to immerse yourself in some activity even if that activity can be breathing and observing your thoughts. I would be fully present with my hours of anxiety and chemical depression until they went away. Knowing and understanding what you’re dealing with is key….. cold showers or showers in general. I would watch YT videos regarding the carnivore diet just to reenforce a healthy way of eating intellectually. I recommend entire carnivore community plus Sally K Norton. Her work on oxalates is a must to navigate oxalate dumping, not just sugar withdrawal. Also eating sufficient amount of protein and fat - without this it is impossible to succeed. Hope this helps 😊

Sugar addiction is very very real. I have tried to stay on Carnivore/ketovore diet for a few months now. It took me a month to get rid of the everything made with grains and everything packaged. Its now down to the 1chocolate bar and 3 icecream bars I consume every evening. Because of those items I cant lose the 55 pound I need to lose. The overweight has now put me in pred diabetic zone and borderline bloodpressure zone. I have taken on an evening cleaning job for the purpose of getting rid of that time frame of sugar consumtion. The last 10 years I have seen my weight rise. Used to be slim and fit. At 68 I have had it with the overweight. Its been a struggle to get rid of that last bit of sweets I consume in the evening so changing my evening routine will get rid of that for good.
I thank you Dr. Berry for your honest approach to extolling the benefits of the proper human diet lifestyle. At 72 years of age I am free! Sweets were always my downfall. Admitting that it was actually an addiction was difficult for this retired nurse. I have many more pounds to lose but I'm down 26 pounds now. Nearing my 90 days. God bless you and your lovely wife.

I know I am sugar addicted November through December is the hardest months because of holiday gatherings, January I was finally able to get on track with bbbe, had a few slip ups in February but still been good enough to lower my A1c from 6.0 to 5.8, unfortunately being around people that don’t understand is hard, Wednesday night Bible study I usually end up sitting between guys that love cookies, swiss rolls, snack cakes, sure I can say no until I get home, but still on my brain for days even after binge eating after getting home sometimes, thankfully doing better and Wednesday night snacking is getting less and less, dealing with a old pet family dog is stressful, eating more beef is helping, having pork king pork rinds around when I’m really struggling also is helping
Thank you so much for this! It's true about carb addiction. If I eat carbs or sugary foods, I literally have lost my "off switch*, I cannot sense when I am full. I simply want more and more. It takes days for me to successfully reason with myself in order to stop. When I am consuming the carnivore foods, I am easily satiated, and am not obsessed with food. I fast 36 hours every other day, and try to stay on the keto carnivore lifestyle. I have released 80 pounds in the past 18 months. Sugar addiction has not gone away. I have to remain vigilant.
I think Dr. Unwin has been following me around over the last few days. As I started watching this video and scarfing down cinnamin pinwheels (yes plural). She was so spot on regarding the cravings. I want to blame the poor eating on the steroid injection I had a couple of weeks ago to control my asthma. I just need to stay out of the store when I leave work at 6 AM after being up all night, but I hear the calling of the sugar as my car passes every store.

That’s so true about food cravings being an almost uncontrollable drive. I remember I went through a phase of around a year, where once a month, the day before my period started, I would find myself in the Sonic drive-thru ordering an Oreo Sonic Blast. I never even decided to go. It was as if my car was on auto-pilot. It really was quite unexpected because I pride myself on being a very deliberate person. I even used to joke that my body took over without my consent. Fortunately, once I became conscious that it was happening, I stopped doing it.
But you know, often, other things replaced it. It’s helped me though to tackle one thing at a time. I haven’t had a soda in 3 years and I cut out sugar in my coffee a year ago and half-sweet tea about 6 months ago so now I just drink water and unsweetened coffee and tea with a rare, occasional glass of milk. I’m totally adapted to that now. Never get ice cream anymore either. I am currently working on the french fries addiction. Thank God I don’t have to worry about dairy. I’m fine with just a few bites of cheese once a week or so and don’t want more than that.
Im 5 days clean eating CVORE with ONE SWIG OF MILK til its gone cause thats a weakness for me. Also 5 days clean of weed too.🎉🎉

On the weed thing, I was having one spliff every night, kind of out of habit. But after time, I realised it was having very little effect. So I just didn't buy any more.
Now, the only time I might have one is every few weeks when an old friend visits. And guess what - it blows my head off! 😂 It's like being a teenager again trying it for the first time. So, given the harm it undoubtedly does, I would suggest that you either dump it completely, or save it for very rare occasions when you'll really enjoy it. 👍

If you’ve ever had chocolate raw by itself it’s disgusting. Hardly even palatable. That’s why the edible snacks are 95% sugar and milk. So really what people are after is a solidified chunk of sugar milk.

I have passed your good words on to my adult daughter living abroad, and my roommate. Both were shocked just how hard it was / is to break the sugar addition, if possible at all. I know purposely fall off the wagon about every other week an head to the bakery for an almond croissant. Then back on the wagon. In my opinion and experience, sugar is harder to beat than tobacco.
I hate my need for sugar. It must be what a drug addict must be like. I try to eat healthy, but recently read that bread and processed food have a lot of sugar in them. 😮
Anything that has carbohydrates has sugar it it - all carbohydrates (even "complex" carbs) eventually digest into simple sugars.
I used to be there. You can cut out carbs and after the withdrawal goes away, the cravings disappear. You can regain self-control and a clear mind. My cravings didn't go away until I went carnivore and obstained from stevia. It is hard but it works and the freedom is worth it!

Gosh, in central London, the Easter Eggs were out in Tesco (a national grocery store) right after Boxing Day (Dec 27). They didn't even wait for Valentine's Day to be over. I found in raising my children the saddest part was the peer pressure on stupid holidays! Big stores plaster all that garbage right at the entry of the stores! My youngest are 51 years old and I was alone in my journey when I refused to get my 4 kids in that dungeon tunnel! But I was torn a lot of the time! Tradition and happy apple pie. It was sad but none of my children have weight problems and neither do I.

I've been following Dr Jen Unwin for a couple of years now on Twitter. Awesome.
Former sugar addict here… but I’ve realized my problem is more an addiction to dopamine hits. I remember a time I was able to stick to avoiding carbs many years ago, and I replaced it with another addiction. Exercise. I would do a HIIT workout in the morning, then midday go run a 5k distance on a trail, then take a martial arts class or go to the rock climbing gym in the evening. Now I’ve been carnivore for almost a year, and I feel great after my morning HIIT workout, but I really notice my addiction after that (I don’t crave sugar anymore, but I crave activity that hits the reward center). So I have to use extra will power to sit at my desk and work. I’ve began using time blocking to help. And now it’s time for me to get back to my desk and start working.
I used to struggle with alcohol. If I stopped alcohol I had to have sweets. The first week was always the hardest. I now can go easily without either but I know that I am still a sugarholic.

I think the problem is not helped by the ideas of a ‘balanced’ diet and ‘healthy’ foods. There is no consensus on what foods are depicted exactly by these terms. ‘Balanced’ suggests that some sugars are acceptable and the word ‘healthy’ is written all over ultra processed high carbohydrate food packages.

I feel there's a hormonal component to sugar/carb addiction. As a child and young adult, I could take or leave sugar. I would take good home baked bread over sugary sweets. As I got older the sugar addiction started kicking in. I did low carb to lose weight and where sugar still wasn't such a big deal, once I cut out breads, pasta, taters and such, I did fine without them. Just fine. But, over time with all the offerings of sugar, thinking no biggie because I could never eat much sugary stuff, I would have a little. Now, sugar is my hangup. I can go without bread. But, I will hard crave sugar. Feels hopeless. I've gotten off it before, but everyone else in the house refuses to get on the same page. They think I'm crazy for claiming we need to get it out of the house. Their opinion is that it's my problem and I need to just not eat it.

"buy with cash" "hide the wrappers and throw them out" -- OMG I thought I was the only one who did this! And I'm single, so there is no one else to track me. I was actually hiding it from *myself*. Any therapist would have a field day with that. I also had the habit of stopping at the store on the way home for a little goodie after a long day's work and eating all of it so that there would be no "evidence" after that day. Yikes!
The only way I could break that habit was to willpower myself home where I would stuff myself with organic grass-fed hot dogs. That did seem to work. Been keto/carnivore for the last 6 month and down 15 pounds, still have 3-4 pounds to go. I look great but I'm STILL craving carbs like rice noodles and chocolate and those unwrapped Starburst. 😥

I’m 68, I’m addicted to sugar and all its forms (starch). I stopped bread and potatoes and rice over a year ago but only recently gave up adding sugar to coffee and tea. All my blood work was normal for the first time in 3 or 4 years. But the thing that surprises me most is people’s reactions to it. People offer food as a form of love and hospitality and when you reject it for personal reasons they act as if you are rejecting them. It’s been the hardest part of going sugar free. Know I’m in trouble when I’m looking at the clock an hour after I ate and wanting that treat that I’ve conditioned myself to get. I set a timer for the next meal and avert my attention to something constructive.

Since turning carnivore 3 months ago I haven't allowed even one thought to enter my mind about eating my old addictions. Entertaining thoughts is the first trigger. That said, I also live alone 30 minutes from a store which helps considerably.

Every time we relapse it reinforces in our brain that we cannot stay abstinent, and prolong the purgatory of withdrawal symptoms.
Emotional maturity and freedom from physical addiction comes when we ask people for help BEFORE we relapse
This is why 12Step group are so effective.
we call upon friends in the program if we are having cravings or want to eat emotionally
The person we call will help stop the behavior by saying things like “ please don’t hurt yourself again!” or “ talk to me for a while about what is causing you so much discomfort that you want to numb out with food.”

What a great video at a timely presentation for me personally. Im about 7 wks into full carnivore. I fit this slot. Had alcohol and cigarette issues. Beat those. Went on to marathon running until I physically had to give that up along with heavy exercise in general due to back issues. But here I am still dealing with a chocolate, coffee, and bakery goods addiction. I raised 7 kids. Three adult kids still at home. Husband who is sugar addicted, and 15 grandchildren who all enjoy their candy, holidays and all. Ive decided its MY problem. Its impossible to get a whole tribe of ppl to bend and accommodate me. And why would I want to draw that kind of attention on myself. Why would I want to cause everyone to walk on egg shells around me? I dont even bring it up. What difficult is having ppl become offended if you do not accept a helping of a sugar laden dessert. People who dont respect when you decline. They continue to chide you. I often dislike holidays and certain social gatherings bc of that. So I often avoid them.
What I would offer that might have been missed is that we need to invite ourself and others to embrace the post/neg consequences of our decisions. Do that mentally, emotionally, somatically. That gives us an unwavering experience holistically with what food does to the body-mind.

For me, it wasn’t necessarily sugar, but things like potato chips, french fries that type of thing that is very hard for me to give up I have and I, but it’s a struggle every day to not go back into old habits and get up in the morning and have a chocolate croissant or something like thatfrench fries for lunch
I used to have a big Costco bag of crisps and haribo in my car and at least two chocolate bars in my bag at any time until breast cancer diagnosis in 2013!! I was following the food pyramid advice of 6-11 servings of carbs per day 😮. Wake up call - I did my research and have been ketovore since 2017 having realised that I’ve been scammed-with a PhD in Human Nutrition- I thought I was doing the perfect diet with carbs, salads and low/no fat everything! I’m fairly 95% faithful to ketovore and doing well post metastatic diagnosis in 2021. Thank God I’m stable !!!
It’s not food addiction. It’s ultra processed food addiction. By design. And it is a drug that is in the form of food like substances.
Also a key to overcoming sugar is not to have UPF. That’s the delivery system and is much more addictive than say in a homemade dessert with raw honey after a good protein and fat meal.
Oh wow I can totally relate I go to work and theres candy and chocolate donuts bags of chips nuts granola bars ... everyday everywhere I just dred going in if I eat just one piece of any of it im screwed I'll just keep goig taking handfuls of whatever I can cram in my face ugh then im miserable and sick blood sugar through the roof trying very hard to stick to keto so I just ate steak mushrooms and green beans with butter and good salt and pray I can bypass all the crap at work thank God I have a physically demanding job or I wouldn't be able to move 😢
i have to add... yes, u can be addicted to steak, burgers, beef... i struggle with that very issue... i went strict carnivor 5 years ago & still struggle with over eating & all i eat is strict carnivor...
A great conversation. I have recently seen a few videos on Keto as metabolic treatment for cancer (as an adjunct to standard of care). Interestingly, even people with the most aggressive of cancers (prognosis of 3 months to live), can find it ‘too hard’ to cut out the carbs citing social reasons often. To me, more evidence that there really is some addictive process I play here.
Thanks for mentioning dairy. When I quit dairy I used to open the fridge and look at the cheese. for 3 months! that's when cravings were finally gone and I started losing wait. amazing how my body still expected it (or my visits to the fridge were also a factor). 🙂

I blame the government. They started it.
Which one? The sugar cane and rum trade going back 400 years or more. Everyone was addicted to sugar even back then. The British Navy used to give out a rum ration which was enough to get most people shitfaced and this is how they could reduce the food required to feed the sailors. After a few decades they figured out that they could water it down to save even more money with the same results. This watered down rum was called grog. It was still 100 proof at 50% alcohol. The full proof rum was 160 proof or more. The sugar could be converted to alcohol which was easier to store and sell. Always a market for whisky or rum so its been around as long as memory and you could blame a government but which one?
yes blame people like Ancel Keys pushed the flawed study of how meat and fat was bad for you.

I’ve been carnivore since November and I still want sugar, I believe it’s because I can’t afford rib eyes that are fattier. I eat hamburger and add either bacon fat or beef tallow. But it doesn’t seem to fill me up….and I’ve been pretty depressed about it.
Can you use butter? Ground beef with butter works well for me. Not the same as ribeye but filling when I eat enough.
Check the bacon ingredients. Many contain sugar. Might want to try butter or pork bellies or short ribs.
@@Amaryllis-4U Whole heartedly agree with this comment! We buy bacon in bulk since we live rurally, just the Walmart stuff, what we can afford. This last couple packages I told my hubby the bacon was so sweet it was almost sickening. I thought it was me, after 2 more packages (yeah I know I am slow...lol) we checked the ingredients. Walmart/Great Value bacon now contains 1 gram of sugar per slice!!!! Yes, PER SLICE!!! I was so grossed out we tossed it, I tossed all the fat I had saved from it and will be much more diligent in reading labels. As soon as we swapped I felt much less cravings and fuller. Always check the labels and watch out they may change them on you =/

The entire job of scientists employed by big food companies is to develop foods that maximize the “bliss point” (the point where the zombie lizard brain simply is not satiated no matter how much of the food you eat). The bliss point also drives you to seek that food over and over again. The medical community cannot add food addiction to the DSM and require insurance companies to pay for treatment because then insurance companies would be motivated to go after big food the way they’ve gone after big tobacco. In the meantime the only solution is total abstinence from all sweet tastes if you want the noise to stop.
It’s the one reason why I’m terrified to try carnivore again. I’m so addicted to carbs I don’t think I could ever imagine looking forward to thanksgiving or Christmas meals knowing I’d be staring at a steak. I want to be free of carb addiction but eating only meat forever makes me feel I’d never enjoy all the pleasures of eating ever again.
I’m a full blown sugar addict. It’s taken many falls off the wagon to admit that. I’ve started back on carnivore/ketovore yesterday and find myself obsessing over food, macros, addictions. If BBB&E was my magic answer I’d be 60lbs lighter. It’s an addiction issue.
I can’t even imagine at this point seeing and smelling cakes, donuts, chocolates and my mind saying “ ooh yuck”.
Give it time; your palate will reset…
Sugar addiction i think falls into a similar category as alcohol addiction. I also think that we are born with it just like some have tendency to be alcoholics. When i grew up sugar was not used a lot in our house. Yet I am the one in my family always trying to find sugar. It also has become more dominant since I started insulin a few years back.
