My story isn't about weight, and I often regret that these conversations focus on obesity, although I understand why that's the case.
I went carnivore about a year ago, at age 63, and eliminated my eczema and blepharitis, which more than one doctor told me wasn't curable, only manageable. The relief I experienced from ending that wretched itching is indescribable. I hope anyone with a chronic condition takes matters into their own hands and researches the proper human diet. You do NOT need to suffer. And the solution is FREE. That's why it's unpopular.

What happens too often in the doctor's office is this:
A patient does keto on his own, and the doctor sees that the patient (1) lost 25 pounds (2) lowered his fasting blood sugar (3) lowered his blood pressure (4) lost his eczema (5) improved his mood (6) got rid of his digestive ailments (7) raised his "good cholesterol" (HDL) and (8) drastically lowered his triglycerides.
But then the doctor sees that the LDL went up, and declares that this diet is unhealthy,
Such a doctor simply needs to learn the science around cholesterol, and to stop taking medical advice from congressional committees and other bureaucrats.

Preach it Frank! My endocrinologist about fell off his chair when my six thyroid nodules shrunk 2 years running after growing (on SAD diet) for 8 years. This still can't change his mind to use Keto to reverse his type 2 diabetic patients. Medical doctors are so afraid of the lows. I can imagine that even one patient in a diabetic coma would be devastating to a doctor. Teaching someone how to dose insulin is so different than teaching someone how to eat low carb and safely lower their insulin. Even the smartest brains and most well meaning doctors can't seem to wrap their heads around how safe this is and how healthy it is! I will give him Dr. Westman's new book, End Your Carb Confusion and Gary Taubes' new book, The Case for Keto & keep shrinking those nodules. What else can we do?!?!

I did Atkins when his second edition came out more than 30 years ago. I recently bought his first book and read it in one day. Dr. Atkins did advocate a low carb diet, almost carnivore, and he even talked about intermittent fasting in different words. In addition, Dr. Atkins advocated eating beef. I was completely shocked when Dr. Atkins died in such a horrible way.

Appreciate the credit given Dr. Robert Atkins. He never got his due. "They" dogged him every step of the way, since his first book in 1972 which truly was a "Diet Revolution". They hated that he was right. I'll always wonder if the good Dr. Atkins's unfortunate slip on the ice back in 2003 was an "accident". Very convenient timing for "them", the famous Dr. Cornish included. Thanks.

You're right about Doctor Atkins. For a period of time, Atkins was THE face to the public of low-carb/keto. He took so much flak, unfairly, that soon other low-carb keto diets that were only Barely different from Atkins came forward (South Beach Diet, etc....) and they all said essentially "Yes, low-carb is the way to go but we're not like that crazy Atkins diet! Oh, No! Ours is entirely different. We do HEALTHY low-carb/keto...." blah blah blah. And they would mischaracterize Atkins as consisting of nothing more than only eating the tops off of pizzas. As I said, these diets were all not much different from what Atkins actually put forth, but they wanted to distance themselves from Atkins specifically. There's a diet plan promoted on TV right now, that talks about insulin resistance. It's all the rage now to talk about IR, and actually that's probably a good thing. But I first read about "insulin resistance" in the Atkins book in February of 1999. (I started low-carb/keto Feb 17, 1999.) And the Atkins book had already been around for several (about 20?) years by then.

I started my 'ketolife' with Atkins, and actually READ his book, took notes, used the recipes, and made mealplans from that book - and it worked perfectly.
And when you actually really look at the food lists and the 'rules' for the real keto diet, and for the Atkins diet that is written in the original book - they are EXACTLY the same.
But as they talk about, the Atkins name was falsely dragged through the mud, and some people still totally misinterpret the Atkins diet, because most of them very clearly haven't read the book.

I have no gall bladder and no thyroid due to cancer at 27 years old and I have been diagnosed diabetic type 2 in 2018, when I went keto and lost 90 lbs. My husband is doing Keto with me, he still has some carbs, because of his medications. He has lowered his insulin since doing Keto. I love Keto, I’ve never been happier eating, all the food I love to eat. Less than 30 carb and happy. I was in WW since 1985 - 2018. Imagine all the money and all the pounds I lost and gained back. I have been on metformin 1000mg twice a day, 1mg glimperide per day also on blood pressure & cholesterol meds. I retired in May & new medicare Dr. added the cholesterol med and wanted me to try the Mediterranean diet but he sent me to a nutrionist and she told me I wasn't eating enough carbs & said I need to eat at least 30grams of carbs per all 3 meals. I have been on stevia for a couple of yrs. I told her what I basically eat for breakfast around 7am included an egg & bacon, a piece of sola bread(2 grams ) with sugarfree peanut butter & plain cinnamon. She told me to add 30 grams of carbs and would rather see me eat regular whole grain bread. For lunch @ 12:00 I was eating a cup of soup or meat with salad also around 4:00pm. I wasn't loosing weight but I wasn't gaining either she told me because not enough carbs. I'm not doing a whole lot of exercizing either. I ask her about keto & she said people on keto loose muscle weight not fat weight & if I stayed on longer than a month would blow out my kidneys. I want off the meds! I wonder why I wasn't loosing weight just maintaining with lower carbs. I don't know??

I think a lot of credit should be given in retrospect to Professor John Yudkin who wrote ' pure , white , and deadly ' back in about 1970 . No it wasn't a book about heroin or cocaine , but it was about the dangers of refined carbs . It is also very interesting and tragic to see how ' vested interests ' acted to discredit Professor Yudkin. If his recommendations were taken on board at that time , think of what the health of high refined carb diet dependent nations would look like now !?

But if you're asking about Keto, there are as many different versions as there are keto gurus, and it's usually much more restrictive and complicated than old Atkins, so a much smaller percentage of people can stick to it and it tends to cause eating disorders in those who are vulnerable to that.

      @rbt5785 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@R2 D2 I don’t see enough people admitting both extremes of the spectrums, from vegetarian to carnivore, can provide substantial benefit. There’s a ton of research that suggests a high degree of benefits from either style are from what is removed rather than the diet itself. Being strict on not consuming junk is the real step one, which most people never fully complete before making judgments one way or the other. Also, extremists on each side who have not tried the opposite extreme and are not seeking the truth, become loyal to their team and just hate on the opposing side.
I’m a truth seeker. I’ve spent years I’d my life plant based, highly strict at times and very loose at other times. After trying carnivore out of pure curiosity, the benefits after only one month have been shocking. I’m not fully sold on something like this long term, but sticking with it for now.
The point is - people need to TRY and confirm before concluding and judging. We are complex humans and clearly a lot of this diet stuff is not even close to being fully understood. Take the shortcut, try it and do what makes you feel best. Get bloodwork, check your vitals, etc. Good luck to all

I have been so blessed with the Keto lifestyle! In almost 21 months, I've lost 110 lbs, am officially off ALL prescription meds (statin, levothyroxine, and pain meds), AND my sleep apnea has been resolved and I no longer need to use a CPAP! I feel wonderful and alive again! I will be 68 years young next month!

Thank you, Dr. Westman for telling us that you can't eat an unlimited amount of fat and still lose weight. A lot of people don't know this!
