  • In this video I look at the Hori Pad Mini. This is a third/(second) Party Nintendo 64 controller only released in Japan. I Compare the Hori Pad Mini to the the Official N64 controller.
Note: There are only 10 versions of the Horipad Mini The transparent orange one shown in the video is fake.

I find it very odd that the Hori pad does not come in original gray.

Duke Nukem 64 is a great game for the Hori Pad, since you can map the weapon select forward/backward and items up/down on the Dpad without having to reach over from the analog stick with the left hand.

The Hori Mini Pad is a SECOND party controller. Hori had very close and still has a very close relationship with Nintendo. That's why their Mini Pad stick was shrunk and put on the Gamecube Controller. Nintendo even let them use the N64 logo and Nintendo logo on the plastic moulding.

    • @Accrovideogames

It's about time that I replaced my N64 controller. I have the exact one that I used as a kid in the 90's connected to an adapter on my pc but the stick is finally going out and L button is busted. Not bad though for decades of use. I have went through 7 different 360 wired controllers in one life span of an N64 pad lol.

    • @darrellgardner4561

@@darrellgardner4561 i use it on pc for emulation so I need the L for SNES games. Since it can be used with the joystick or d-pad its perfect for emulation.

Recently got a brawler64. Havent used it on a n64 but on pc it doesnt seem to work right. The little notches in the stick basically keep it from registering the stick being pushed in that direction all the way.

YOU PLAYED MARIO PARTY WITH A HORI MINI!?
    YOUR A FUCKING MADMAN!
p.s youd probs enjoy the tridant with gc style stick, you can get one for like 20$.
also there are the 20year old horis, and those transparent one, are made by another company, not hori, and it has differences like a better dpad.

FINNALLY PEOPLE ARE MENTIONING THE FLIPPEN SENSITIVY OF THE JOYSTICKS
Yes i hate the fact that the joysticks ware out and sadly the original controller is not ergonomic for my hands(i don't hate the design )
But for so long almost nobody mentions the sensitivity of the joysticks (for non fps games it is probably a better option)

Hori pad is so much better then the regular 64 controller it isn’t even funny. The 64 control stick is total ass. Feels so in-precise and difficult to get the perfect angles you want. My best example of this is the room in the Fire Temple of OOT where you get the Megaton Hammer. Running on that little ledge without falling down is hell with the 64 controller but is infinite easier with the Hori because of how precise the analog stick is. Aiming is much better with the Hori for Zelda too. Couldn’t disagree more with that aspect of the video. If you play N64 a lot, it’s not even a question whether or not you should get it. The only time I use my regular controller is for Kirby 64 and Pokémon Stadium

the hori pad sucks if you like n64 wrestling games. but for everything else it's great. i would advise either having one of each, or getting the newer Retron Fighter brawler controller, which is great for all games.

TL;DR horipad is only good and useful in certain cases and all comes up to preference, OEM is objectively better in all aspects except for how the analog stick grinds down to dust.
every horipad has a different kind of analog stick box inside and different analog stick angles so people's tastes with it will vary, although most horipads in good condition have good and similar angles, it's not very good with shooters, IMO it's only good for something like SM64 or other 3D platformers. as a speedrunner, i just prefer using a horipad because it's very aesthetically pleasing (it's weird idk how to explain it) and i don't like replacing an OEM controller and wasting tons of money just to do runs. OEM is a pretty good controller and the sensors for detecting movement are some of the best, the only problem is the analog stick bowl grinding down to dust :/

Also, apparently the NA n64 controller lacks a lube that the Japanese version had due a patent error or something, so lubing the socket will solve that issue.

Good riddance, the horri is so over hyped. Analogue stick is junk and many of them have drift issues. Load up the analogue stick stick test on your everdrive, they dont ever get anywhere near the offical lines. Get a gamecube adapter and add button mapping for different situations IE melee controls for smash and fps controls, etc.
