I cannot listen to this demonstration enough!! Not only is the organ a masterpiece, but the playing is so beautiful, sensitive, musical. You know exactly what harmonies and range to make each stop sound perfect. I could listen to you improvise for hours.
Thank you so much for this excellent demonstration! The sounds are beautiful, and your improvisations are perfect. I am spending my quarantine voicing pipes for a new organ in America, and you have inspired me with these wonderful sounds. Merci!
M. Dupont, thank you, thank you for this masterfully intelligent and passionate explanation of just how subtle and magnificent this machine is. It is very hard to get non musicians and even some organists to understand the subtlety and richness or such a machine. Your exposition explains all. I first heard this organ on a recording of the works of Liszt in the late 1970s or early 1980s. At that time the organ was in a very poor state but its unique beauty shone through . I can barely express my joy that it has been saved and restored to be the truly magnificent example of organ building that it,most certainly, is.
Thank you very much, Monsieur Dupont, for this peek over your shoulder into one of the most magickal offices I can imagine. I fell in love with the sound of Cavaillé-Coll's mind already when I was a small kid. I think I've only grown more fond (pun intended) of it as I grew older, and to be able to get this intimate tour for my ears, eyes, and spine (organ music = body music) I find a beautiful privilege. Thank you.
Fabulous improvising, every note and chord, and that wonderful sound in perfect tune! Who wouldn't be inspired by the finest instrument in its class on the planet.
The quality - both visual and acoustic - is impressive in this video. I’m not sure whether I could even think of doing something “better”. This is very, very well done. No fluff, just sound and the input side of the machinery that makes it possible - and the human executor. Perfect.
I also think this is one of the best demonstrations of any great romantic organ but especially of a Cavaille-Coll instrument, Buy an extraordinarily accomplished organist. Thank you so much, merci beaucoup, M. Jean-Marie DuMont!
Wonderful demonstration of the symphonic power of this famous instrument. I’ve been a fan of this particular organ ever since Daniel Chorzempa’s Widor album came out in the 80s.
Thank you for the demo, very fine. Today I'm preparing to "block" (assemble the blocks and the resonators of) the latest Cavaille-Coll basson-hautbois that I make here at C. B. Fisk. This one is nearly identical to the one at St. Sernin. As a reed voicer, I also enjoyed your use of the word "notorious" for the vox humana.
What a great Tutti Sound! When I visited there with an organ tourgroup some years back they wouldn't let us crank it out like that. Even so, it's in my top 3 French organs (with St Sulpice & St Ouen!)
I think exploring all the Registers would be a good idea for a new video because each Register has a special sound on their own. A Full Chromatic Scale & some improvisations played on Each one of the registers individually, in combinations, & in full organ mode would really demonstrate it because the Pipe Organ has quite a big range.
Bravo, thank you for this wonderful demonstration of this magnificent organ! I'd love to see a supplementary video demonstrating the various ventil pedals, the pedals for coupling manuals and pedal, the sub and superoctave coupler pedals, etc.!
This church became a focal point for Widor and the inspiration of his Symphonie Romaine (10th). Although this organ is slightly smaller than St. Ouen in Rouen, it has a thrilling sound. It is my personal favourite!!
Wonderfully masterful tour of this splendid and much celebrated instrument and....without exaggeration, to hear the SUPERB gifts of Jean-Baptiste Dupont!!!
I love the extroverted personality of this instrument. Those chamades really shout, and when you drop the hammer on the bombarde, it's clobbering time!
I am so happy that I found this demonstration! This organ is impressive! Thank you for doing this , for we old and decrepit organists cannot travel to hear thee magnificent organs in person.
Great recorded sound. Just enough reverberation to make the sound 'live' while the clarity of the voices was ... 'clear.' Video editing was also perfect.
Leave it to the French! Superb. Also the best demo I have ever seen. So many organists on here do the dreary progression of “Here’s Stop X > arpeggio. Here’s Stop Y > arpeggio. It’s so unrealistic. In this video we hear a demo of the *families* of the organ, together with very insightful explanation of why and how departments of the organ are voiced the way they are. It was a joy to watch and listen to this video.
Nice demonstration and a good explanation for what different stops are used for in the intonation of the music played. The contra bombarde combined with the other reeds gave goose bumps.
Fantastic sounds, both flues and reeds. I was surprised at the end just how similar this instrument is in sound with the organ at Notre-Dame, Paris. It shows that they are both still part of the French style, despite one being modified so much over the years. I now understand the function of the Carillon and Cornet stops on these French Romantic instruments.
Hi Samuel, do you ever plan on posting more videos onto your TH-cam channel? I (and many others) very much enjoyed your content and would love to see a return.
@@OscarHerrick I would like to in the future. I have moved interstate since my last video, but as things stand it will still probably be a while until I do.
@Richard Harrold Richard, this organ has certainly not been "changed radically". It's been essentially unaltered. Just compare its sound with that of the organ in St Ouen, which is also basically unchanged and you'll see how similar they are - they've retained essentially their original sound. The organ in Notre-Dame, which has twice as many stops as this one, has undergone many changes since 1868, but these changes have mostly consisted in additions to CC's material. It can be registered to sound like St Sernin's. The flutes, the gambes, the foudations stop sare just as beautiful and expressive as those of St Sernin's.
@Richard Harrold Tragically, whatever happens, even if the original C-C console is reinstated, is the famous Notre-Dame 'touch', which in pre-Cochereau days was legendary.
@@lb2759 S. Ouen seems to have more 'gravitas' about it than the somewhat lighter S. Sernin. Both magnificent instruments, but notably different from each other.
They are called "Les pédales des combinaisons" - The combination pedals. These manipulate all the couplers and sub octave couplers, they also activates certain stops (those with red labels on the right side; some higher pitch stops, mixtures, cornets and reeds) and they activates tremolo.
Excellent demonstration of the organ and explanation of the need for and uses of the cornet and carillon stops. Many non French organists might not realise their importance in much French organ music.
With a few exceptions, I've long since stopped listening to French organ music played by non-Frenchmen. (Gerard Brooks is a great example of a non-Frenchman who knows what he's doing in this repertoire).
Thank you so much for a fabulous tour of one of the most beautiful organs in the world - I am so grateful to see this! And in your quieter improvisations especially, the soul of Duruflé (my favourite composer) shines through you. Absolutely wonderful.
Aristide himself would be proud, very nice!!
This is perhaps the most interesting demonstration I have ever heard of an organ. Great work!
Merci Jean-Baptiste.
Thank you for this wonderful tour of one of the worlds most magnificent organs!

I want to note that the videography is well done, also. Thank you for this tour.
Agreed
I would 'like' your comment, but the number of likes is at a very apt '32' as I type this - so I'm not going to change it!

Thank you for the very interesting demonstration of this splendid historical instrument. Those C-C reed stops are amazing! 💥👍❤️

What a beautiful instrument! Thanks for this wonderful demonstration of such a superb organ!
One of my favorite organs in the world. Hope to see this church in a few weeks when I visit Toulouse.

Very nice and interesting thank you for the upload

These improvisations scream French impressionist. Really lovely
Don't forget the lovely 'Classical' bits when that era was being discussed.
Thanks very much for your demonstration.

Those flutes.... Thank you!
Oh my goodness, they just don’t make organs like THAT anymore. Stunning! Thank you for a wonderful video.
Bravo, thank you for such a beautiful and interesting presentation!

Nice. So often we hear demonstrations where the single stops are brush over and before we know it 10 ranks are blaring away.
Really enjoyable and informative. Your brief improvisations are superb too.
Thank you, Maestro.
Fantastic instrument!
Bravo, Maestro!
Merci beaucoup!, M. DuPont.
Merci beaucoup.
Cher maestre, ça c'etait génial! Merci beaucoup.
Wonderful demonstration!
Divine sound! Love the French organs.
Bravo! Thank you so much.
As magnificent as the instrument is, the improvisations are equally as marvelous.
The Cornet Solo Mixtures are the Mid range Pipes, those are great for Solo playing & Full Organ mode they balance out the Low & High Ends.
Many thanks. Most interesting!
Amazing!!
Very nice, thank you!

Merci! Merveilleux!
