    This church became a focal point for Widor and the inspiration of his Symphonie Romaine (10th). Although this organ is slightly smaller than St. Ouen in Rouen, it has a thrilling sound. It is my personal favourite!!

    The quality - both visual and acoustic - is impressive in this video. I’m not sure whether I could even think of doing something “better”. This is very, very well done. No fluff, just sound and the input side of the machinery that makes it possible - and the human executor. Perfect.

    Thank you for the demo, very fine. Today I'm preparing to "block" (assemble the blocks and the resonators of) the latest Cavaille-Coll basson-hautbois that I make here at C. B. Fisk. This one is nearly identical to the one at St. Sernin. As a reed voicer, I also enjoyed your use of the word "notorious" for the vox humana.

    M. Dupont, thank you, thank you for this masterfully intelligent and passionate explanation of just how subtle and magnificent this machine is. It is very hard to get non musicians and even some organists to understand the subtlety and richness or such a machine. Your exposition explains all.
    I first heard this organ on a recording of the works of Liszt in the late 1970s or early 1980s. At that time the organ was in a very poor state but its unique beauty shone through . I can barely express my joy that it has been saved and restored to be the truly magnificent example of organ building that it,most certainly, is.

    I think exploring all the Registers would be a good idea for a new video because each Register has a special sound on their own. A Full Chromatic Scale & some improvisations played on Each one of the registers individually, in combinations, & in full organ mode would really demonstrate it because the Pipe Organ has quite a big range.

    Thank you very much, Monsieur Dupont, for this peek over your shoulder into one of the most magickal offices I can imagine. I fell in love with the sound of Cavaillé-Coll's mind already when I was a small kid. I think I've only grown more fond (pun intended) of it as I grew older, and to be able to get this intimate tour for my ears, eyes, and spine (organ music = body music) I find a beautiful privilege. Thank you.

    Leave it to the French! Superb.
    Also the best demo I have ever seen. So many organists on here do the dreary progression of “Here’s Stop X > arpeggio. Here’s Stop Y > arpeggio. It’s so unrealistic.
    In this video we hear a demo of the *families* of the organ, together with very insightful explanation of why and how departments of the organ are voiced the way they are. It was a joy to watch and listen to this video.

    Mille mercis, cher J.B. pour cette présentation de notre instrument (Roi) : l'ORGUE. Nous en sommes le chef d'orchestre, les pupitres, les solistes. Sous nos 10 doigts, nos 2 pieds, notre approche, nous faisons chanter tout un orchestre , et ce avec notre sensibilité personnelle. Chacun d'entre nous, ce que peu appréhendent , sommes un Karajan, un Georg Solti, un Barenboim.... Nous sommes biens plus que des D.J. de messe à la solde de curetons ignares. C'est à nous que les auditeurs, paroissiens, fidèles ou autres, doivent , au delà de toute notion de croyance ou de foi, le soutien et l'aide de "la musique consolatrice" (cf Dr J.V.PAILLES musicotherapeute) . Fantastic sounds, both flues and reeds. I was surprised at the end just how similar this instrument is in sound with the organ at Notre-Dame, Paris. It shows that they are both still part of the French style, despite one being modified so much over the years.
    I now understand the function of the Carillon and Cornet stops on these French Romantic instruments.

      @@Sathrandur it's worth noting that neither organ is unaltered. Saint Sernin has been revoiced, and the acoustic changed radically, since 1888.

    • @lb2759
      @lb2759 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardharrold9736 Richard, this organ has certainly not been "changed radically". It's been essentially unaltered. Just compare its sound with that of the organ in St Ouen, which is also basically unchanged and you'll see how similar they are - they've retained essentially their original sound.
      The organ in Notre-Dame, which has twice as many stops as this one, has undergone many changes since 1868, but these changes have mostly consisted in additions to CC's material. It can be registered to sound like St Sernin's. The flutes, the gambes, the foudations stop sare just as beautiful and expressive as those of St Sernin's.

    • @richardharrold9736
      @richardharrold9736 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lb2759 the Saint Sernin organ was revoiced twice, once in the 1930s by Puget (an excellent firm, several of whose instruments are just as highly regarded as S. Sernin), which just increased its power without changing its character, then again in the 1990s in an ill-advised restoration when the entire nave was stripped of its plaster, destroying the acoustic. Go and listen to the old recordings on my "AnOrganCornucopia" channel, by André Isoir and Jean-Claude Raynaud. It was, even then, not unaltered, but it sounded very different as a result of the acoustic being far more reverberant than it is today. It had more power and more brilliance. When the nave was scraped back to the brick, it lost a lot of impact and so had to be further loudened to get the power back, and it just became coarse. The mixtures scream in a way they never used to. The reeds are rough. Frankly, the Puget built the same year at Nôtre Dame du Taur a thousand feet to the south is a rather better instrument, according to a fair few organists who know both well.
      Saint-Ouen, Rouen, has the advantage of never having been altered, although it is wholly unrestored and now filthy and generally showing signs of its age. A carefully-conducted overhaul and conservation would do wonders for it - but it remains C-C's masterpiece. Saint Etienne Caen is pretty bloody special too.
      Nôtre Dame de Paris has been so mucked-about by Jean-Loup Boisseau and others that it really no longer sounds like a Cavaillé-Coll. The original material has been extensively revoiced. Now, before the fire, it was still an exciting instrument, but not really a C-C. How to proceed with it over the next decade will be a dilemma that should not be decided solely by Messrs Latry, Lefebvre, Dubois and Vexo, but by a panel of organists and organbuilders from around the world, following acoustical analysis and the installation of a new orgue de choeur. I would personally hope for a reinstatement of the 1868 tonal scheme and console...

    Everybody: just realize how phenomenal CC was. There are 54 stops on this instrument, yes, just 54.
    Yet it stands head and shoulders above much bigger monsters which have twice as many stops. Ther's where the genius of CC lies. His pipes do not just sound exquisitely individually, but aptly combined they make up new sounds that are amazing in variety and texture. Just view other videos by Jean-Baptiste Dupont palying this instrument.
    St Ouen has about 60 stops as well.
    In my opinion, CC's genius is most instructively demonstrated in his smaller instruments, say with about 20 stops, such as that in the Val de Grace, in Paris. You have to hear that instrument to realize the variety of sounds you can conjure up with 20 stops, when your name is Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.

    The Cornet Solo Mixtures are the Mid range Pipes, those are great for Solo playing & Full Organ mode they balance out the Low & High Ends.

      They are called "Les pédales des combinaisons" - The combination pedals. These manipulate all the couplers and sub octave couplers, they also activates certain stops (those with red labels on the right side; some higher pitch stops, mixtures, cornets and reeds) and they activates tremolo.

    An excellent demonstration of a very fine instrument. Like most French instruments, the reeds are fiery and at times - at least to my sensitive anglo saxon ears - a bit brash and overwhelming. However, my recording of Kimberly Marshall playing the Durufle Prelude and fugue sur le nom d'alain seems to work well, although the cavernous acoustic does affect the clarity towards the end.
    8/10.
