It's interesting how similar Magnus is to Bobby Fischer. Both players were just so dominant and far ahead of everyone else during their time periods that they stopped trying to defend their world titles, both had similar complaints about the game of chess and the world championship format, and both continued to enjoy the game via alternate formats (like Fischer random) Bobby Fischer was even known to play bad openings/troll openings on purpose to give himself a challenge.
All of this makes me realize that magnus, across all best players, is definitely someone who likes to 'play' chess, just another level. This is so resonating with him not wanting to defend the world champion title once again. Full respect.
