His kit in the 90s sounded like he was playing the cases. He had that big ass 15” mounted tom and what looked like a 26” bass drum, and what I’m hoping was a 18” floor tom… and no resonance at all
And I just watched the video after making this comment expecting a totally different sound, and holy shit… you were right. The kick sounds like 90s Alex Van Halen, though

(I knew I bought a new roll of tape that disappeared somewhere)
To answer some questions I see in comments. I have recorded the kit, which can be heard, along with other very different types of builds, on the Solos for Concept Drum Sets audio recording and Video on my channel, REFondrums. The video was done with a ZOOM Q8.
Watching the bearing edge test, I'd have to conclude the more serious disparity in the flatness was caused by undue pressures placed upon them in transit. I didn't care about the edges, as long as nothing sharp existed but, I know they were not out as much as shown here in one spot. Still, as David states, the drums are not typical diameters, per se' so, all the heads float and tension up okay. The pushed-in floor tom leg bracket shows what kind of handling they received. I should have packed them up with even more safety area around them.
As far as the kick, 22 vs.18, the first video I did with them on my channel uses the 18" side. Pretty cool thump either way.
As an aside, my friend who mixed and mastered my audio recordings tells me his favorite set of mine to listen to is the Trash Can set. He considers it one of the best sounding kits he's heard. (!!!!)
Just let's us know a very objective fact. Sound is subjective in the ears of every listener.
Thanks to David for showcasing Trash Can drums! (Did I actually type that?) YES!

Also, a little tip for tuning a drum with a warped bearing edge: Use a hairdryer or heat gun on the head when it's under tension, it could (could) help to warp the head in the same way as the bearing edge and decrease the likelihood of wrinkles. Another tip: Don't use glass to check the flatness of hoops and bearing edges; most glass, contrary to popular belief, is not flat!

I think I recognize some of those creations from an old drum forum. I am trying to remember if it's the same guy that tried to sound test 4 different bearing edges on two drums using threaded rod so that he didn't have to install lugs to prove that bearing edge cuts didn't matter because they all sound the same. But the drums were only half tuned with weird pitch bends, and each drum shared two different edges, so there was no final comparison of anything other than you can hit it and it makes noise.
He does make some fun and interesting stuff though. I really liked the plywood (sideways ply) shells.

This reminds me on the 24' Surdo I'm playing sometimes as a Bass Drum. It's more than 24' deep and made out of Aluminum, so that you can wear it on the street samba party. Those lug constructions are really rough! 😅
There's a custom drum builder here in Finland, who also makes drums with wooden lugs, called Saari drums. I own one of those kits. He has used thread inserts in the lugs, so there's nothing dropping out of the lug when unscrewed, and the bolts he uses are deep hexagon socket cap screws, so the drumkey (he included one in the kit) stays upright and basically works like a normal drumscrew. :)

So I built a drum out of a trash can. Bought a trash can mounted it on an old thrown stand, added an old cymbal stamd on the closed end, and attached a kick pedal to the cymbal stand, ran a chain from the kick pedal to the a hole in the trash can and attached it to a batter that strikes the inside of the trash can.

Looks ace and sounds great too....personally I'm a fan unusual looking and sounding drums...lp trash snare is a fave of mine...and I have a popcorn pancake snare which I made following creative percussions fx snares...another snare I like. I made 12 diameter x 10" snare too, that sounded funky. I'm not a fan of the fancy high end kits and have plans to build my own set soon.

Missed opportunity to make the tuning key out of a long 3/8 socket and a bit of that Allen key to make the T-handle!!

My first kit was a very strange starter kit by Rogers… who i never heard of before. Come to find they were kind of big in the past but this kit was a new, low budget kit at the time (probably 2005). Cost 400 bucks. The stock cymbals literally sounded exactly like hitting a garage door with sticks.
But for some strange reason the kick and toms on the thing were and still are some of the best sounding drums I’ve ever heard. Very thin shells, next to impossible to tune with careful nuance, and the lugs and hardware left a whole lot to be desired.
After a while they started to warp a bit and lost their specialness… but I had two sets for years… that one an a way nicer 2500 dollar pearl kit.
I would record a ton and would always try my pearl… and often end up using the rogers shells instead. They just had everything… for no reason whatsoever. Only lasted about 7 years though.

I feel like you did the kick dirty by not micing the reso, but those cans sounded incredible!!

No disrespect intended. I would be curious to see his DAW. How much EQ, compression, etc, was used. Great sound!
