Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow and even Eggman have very similar backstories to one another and each of them had different ways to cope with the trauma. If they can handle Shadows character well enough this might end up being one the most layered and intresting set of movies i can think of in recent memory that really tackle trauma and mental health. Sure it will never be perfect but its clear the team have a passion in making this story the best it can be.
Ive always said this, for "kids movies" the Sonic movies are surpisingly deep. I mean, Sonic has a literal PTSD episode in the first movie and potentially got people *killed.* He wiped out power in an entire region of the country, people on life support, etc.. suddenly didnt have that anymore. It was a deep scene that highlights how hurt people can hurt people, even if entirely unintentional.
the gerald scene at the end of the trailer is giving me pachacamac’s ghost vibes, so it could definitely just be crazy eggman hallucinations or some ghost shenanigans if they don’t retcon his death
Well there are a few things off already. One, Eggman didn't break him out he got out himself but if Gerold is alive I'm going to assume this was his plan and he hacked GUN systems to do so as canonically he was alive for some time after the raid on Arc and this allowed him to plot his revenge and program this plan into Shadow's memory. Also Sonic calls him a rogue alien implying the commander was lying to him as Shadow is a genetic experiment created by Gerold.
@@purplebruh947 stasis. This guy's intellect surpasses that of Eggman. Created a weapon that can destroy planets and immortal life forms 50 years prior. In terms of sci-fi tech cryogenic stasis would be simple for him
@@purplebruh947 Its not yet confirmed Gerald is is her grandfather. Or Robotnik's grandfather for that matter. He could be either of their father in this universe. He looks a lot younger in that flashback. Remember, they're following the games lore loosely, but not 100% exact. And yeah, if nothing else, he just figured out how to keep himself alive longer. Its really that simple. He literally created an immortal hedgehog, and his goal was to save Maria. Its not impossible he found a way to extent his own life. Also, the fact that they LITERALLY JUST PULLED THIS SHIT WITH PACHACAMAC tells me he's legit alive and its not just a trailer stunt. It also makes sense, too--if Jim Carrey did not return all they had to do was cast a new actor for Gerald, so they wrote the film with Gerald alive and simply had a slot available for Jim Carrrey.
7:15 When you said "crab enemy from Green Hill", I wasn't picturing Crabmeat. Due to the size, I was picturing the giant spidercrabs from sandy Green Hill in Sonic Forces.
That’s exactly what I thought. I hope we get some sort of reference to the Egg Dragoon though, as that is the most recognisable Eggman mech other than the Wrecking Ball.
There’s a surprising amount of meat to be drawn out of this trailer in terms of story. There seems to be more parallels drawn between Sonic and Shadow’s histories than in the original games, framing Shadow as what Sonic could have become under different circumstances. I love the dialogue during the first confrontation with “Team Sonic.” The line “You’re a colorful bunch” seems extremely dismissive from Shadow, like he sees Sonic and his friends as corny and doesn’t take them seriously. I imagine he’d have a similar reaction if the Power Rangers suddenly showed up to thwart him (which is a crossover I never knew I needed). Team Sonic also thrives on the power of friendship, which Shadow has good reason not to believe in. Very different in tone compared to the previous films. Later on, immediately following the Shadow the Hedgehog 2015 reference, Tom is seen knocked to the floor while screaming Sonic’s name in fear. Two shots later, the black hole thing appears, with a heavy implication that Shadow created it, sucking in everything within a large radius. The next shot seemingly shows Team Sonic reacting to the aftermath of this event, and eagle-eyed viewers will notice that they are in the same environment as in the scene where Sonic and Tails argue about teaming up with Robotnic. The shots in the trailer seem to say that during Shadow’s rampage against GUN, Tom will get caught in the crossfire as a new and well-meaning recruit and will be separated from Sonic - or even possibly DEAD - for a large portion of the runtime. This would explain the furious look that Sonic gives Tails when he says “When has that ever stopped me?” Something else interesting to note is that Shadow doesn’t seem to attack unless he is provoked by his POV. When he first breaks out of the test tube, he is surrounded by GUN soldiers training weapons at him, a visual that would understandably be a painful trigger for him, prompting him to immediately start wiping them all out before they can cause him any more suffering. In Shibuya, he is initially intrigued by Team Sonic, retaliating only when Knuckles attacks him, with the added detail that he turned his back before Knuckles threw his punch. And if one of them attacks, then he can’t be too careful with the others. I get the sense that Shadow is only acting out of fight or flight during this trailer, and that all this violence and power isn’t what he wants to be deep down. Tom puts it best at the beginning, telling Sonic that despite the hardships he faced, he never changed who he was, which is the major difference between him and Shadow, who was made a monster in everyone else’s eyes. There’s potential here for Sonic and Shadow to go on opposite arcs and switch demeanors, where Sonic will become more jaded and serious through losing Tom and Shadow will find some new element of life to cling to and change his outlook. I think it would be a hard-hitting scene for Shadow to realize that the feelings of grief and vengeance he felt from losing Maria led to him inflicting that same loss on someone similar to him. Will he be overcome with guilt and seek redemption, or will he be further convicted in his twisted outlook on life? Who knows how dark this movie will actually get, but I’m definitely excited to see more!
Given that shadow says in the trailer, “when we’re done, there won’t be anything left.” So I’m assuming Gerald will be the main antagonist after all, but who knows.
Also I'm suspicious on how Gerald is still alive even if he wasn't executed. If the movies still say he made shadow 50 years ago where he was already an old man. I suspect robot shenanigans.
@@Usernamesdontmatter1 cryostatis baby. when maria died, shadow let himself get captured so gerald can get away. While not in the trailer that you reacted to here, the Metal Overlord fight was shown in some more detail in some other previews that have gotten online. Metal Overlord does appear to have a partial immunity to Chaos Control, which he proclaims to be because of having copied the power, as while the boss fight does still slow down, Metal Overlord does not.
I genuinely hate to say it but in general online communities feel so much less expansive ever since trailers and everything got marked for made for kids, it makes everyone's experiences and reactions (besides reaction videos) so much more disconnected
I realllly hope the shadow backstory is well executed. I can't wait to see this dark shade of storytelling in this "light-hearted" kids movie. Sonic stories have far more potential to be mesmerizing.
They just need to get Shadow's character right and I'm set tbh, hell I'll even excuse any bad jokes the movie throws at me. Shadow is someone who I feel has been greatly mis-represented in mainstream media (no thanks to the games for the last 15 years If I'm being completely honest), only seen as a shallow edgelord who spewes out generic villain lines but anyone who grew up with SA2 knows that he's so much more than that so fingers crossed the writers understand the assignment. Ironically I feel 06 was the last mainline game to really get his character right, it respects his past character arcs and gives us quite frankly, the most competent character in that whole game lmao.
He was done well in Prime for the little he appeared, Forces (surprisingly) and other little game projects recently, but at least if the movie gets it right his characterisation will be cemented
With Gerald alone, assuming he’s the villain, it could be so interesting to see Shadow grappling with that. Assuming he switches sides after remembering Maria’s promise, it would be so painful for him to have to fight against the last family he has in order to fulfill the wishes of the person both be and Gerald lost. But while Shadow decided to protect humanity because of Maria, Gerald decided to doom it.
I think Gerald is goig to be the true final villain at the end. After Shadow remembers what maria actually and the super hedgehogs have to fight Gerald in the ark while he tries to destroy the world
I can only imagine Gerald is going to take over Eggman's role in SA2 but also remaining the antagonist, which if they do that I'm really interested in seeing if they give Robotnik those feelings of genuine introspection he has towards the end of the game, reflecting on the actions of his grandfather. Giving Jim Carrey Robotnik some actual character moments like that would be pretty cool to see.
Tails just gets brutally violated every time he’s in the same room as shadow i swear😭 sonic x, sonic boom (bro was tossed into a freaking well and in the game he got kicked into a freaking portal in the game😭) the fox needs a break fr
I don't remember where I saw this, but I remember some article where someone says this movie's about how one can move on from grief and loss. I really hope the way they go about it, is by Shadow being able to overcome his grief because of Sonic and his family helping him through it, were as Gerald processes his grief by becoming unhinged and wanting to fire the eclipse cannon on the planet. I hope it's a big twist that Gerald is actually the one pulling the strings the whole time. In the trailer, they said there's been a security breach on prison island and whoever that was is (presumably) why Shadow breaks out, so maybe it was Gerald, planting his scheme into Shadow's mind. It's always been implied he's done that in the game to manipulate Shadow into doing his plan, but to have that actually be a plot point would be VERY cool.
I won't lie an orchestral version of Live and Learn full would actually go hard. And fits the theme of modern games having an orchestral version of the main theme since 06.
I just hope they bring their A-Game with the soundtrack. With their 30 year long catalogue and especially after the Mario Movie, they have no excuses this time not to fill this movie with ear candy.
Shadow with orange eyes actually looks deceptively good; I wouldn't mind if they retconned his pupils to be orange instead of Super Sonic red at some point. Also Gerald Robotnik actually looking like Gerald Robotnik from the game makes the movie's interpretation of Eggman look... rather uncanny.
Everyone seems to have a different idea on what the black hole is. But if you frame by frame it, you can see it originates from a ring portal. So I’m pretty sure that’s just Shadow exiting the scene dramatically. Seems weird to open a portal into open space. But maybe that’s right after he steals the Chaos Emeralds from Team Sonic and turns super. I dunno. EDIT (2 days later): It's definitely not a ring portal. I've seen a trimmed down version of the trailer that extends the beginning of the black hole explosion by a few frames, and it looks like some kind of object that causes it. Maybe some sort of grenade, hard to tell. It's very brief. But it definitely didn't look like a ring.
@@silversonome5360 yes, but if you were going to the Ark while it’s in orbit, you wouldn’t open a portal to open space. You’d open a portal to inside the space station.
Oddly enough, only the Sonic channel upload of the trailer was marked as for kids, while the first upload on official Paramount Pictures channel is still up fine. It just shows what bias TH-cam has against Sonic, ugh.
I had no idea the director of these movies did CGI for the Shadow The hedgehog game. Looking at this trailer and going back to the game, there’s some familiarity there.
@9:06 I think it's funny that immediately after you brought up an orchestral version of Live and Learn, a couple seconds after you unpaused that's exactly what's playing in the background. The motifs from it sound great in this trailer; I can't wait to hear how they sound in the movie proper.
I’m really hoping Metal Sonic is in the movie and they just wanted to keep him a surprise. Just like how in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” they kept Tobey and Andrew a surprise
I love the way you make reaction videos, because it really feel genuine and you make comments that can start a pretty interesting conversation. I know every creator has their own unique way of reacting to this kind of stuff, but I enjoy this more than someone yelling in a very annoying and unrealistic way.
That is not the ark. I think that is eggman's secret hideaway bunker, that he's been hiding in since the ending of the second movie. I don't think they wanna give away the ark being in the movie cause they know people are looking forward to it, and as a final boss, we could get either gerald robotnik, the bio lizard, and even metal sonic, the options are still open and I'm so excited! Edit: you've earned a subscriber lol i can tell you're a hardcore sonic fan like me. Great vid!
small thing but I love shadow's lightning color. instead of yellow or red they made it a scarlet orange-red which I think suits his personality more and is much more unique. also, though i doubt they put this much thought into it, they could imply that the color is a result of shadow's personality (the red) and his chaos powers (the yellow).
Hard mode in generations make it so bosses take extra health, and in the case of perfect chaos the level route is different, funny enough perfect chaos on hard is actually a faster boas fight than normal but more intense
I wonder if they will keep Shadow alive or they’ll do a tribute to how he originally was suppose to be dead after SA2 by sacrificing himself. He should at least be resolving his revenge arc and fulfills Maria’s wish for humanity to prosper.
I think with each movie they get closer to my ideal Sonic movie. I thought the first one was a fine kid's movie that was better than it had any reason to be.
I mean, Sonic has a literal PTSD episode in the first movie and potentially got people *killed.*
He wiped out power in an entire region of the country, people on life support, etc.. suddenly didnt have that anymore.

Shadow was created 50 years ago. How did Gerald already had a granddaughter 60+ years ago and still alive?
@@purplebruh947 stasis. This guy's intellect surpasses that of Eggman. Created a weapon that can destroy planets and immortal life forms 50 years prior. In terms of sci-fi tech cryogenic stasis would be simple for him
Could be some sort of android.
@@MonkeyboyST1it is?
Sorry, forgot the Death Egg Robot, but that’s already in the movies. Those 3 mechs are the most iconic ones in the sonic franchise.
This would explain the furious look that Sonic gives Tails when he says “When has that ever stopped me?”
Something else interesting to note is that Shadow doesn’t seem to attack unless he is provoked by his POV.
The ark being in London is the most random thing ever and I love it 😂
Given that shadow says in the trailer, “when we’re done, there won’t be anything left.” So I’m assuming Gerald will be the main antagonist after all, but who knows.
Yeah good call, saying “we” definitely implies he’s working with someone. Can’t imagine it’d be anyone but Gerald
Gerald should build something for revenge. that need 50 years to finish and freeze himself to stay alive. when it done, he woke up and free shadow by hacking the prison island system. I can picture it could happen in this movie.
Honestly, Gerald being alive and actively pursuing his plan to destroy the world would be far more engaging than anything the Biolizard could bring to the table.
But Biolizard was Gerald being dead and actively trying to destroy the world…
@@BornagainvillainSo it’s a level of abstraction removed. That’s an improvement in my book.
@@GhostLight06 I would disagree. It takes from the finality of it all. But since this isn’t adapting by the book Adventure 2, it’ll be interesting to see where this goes.
Getting a Sentinel Prime style plot twist with Gerald being revealed to be helping The Black Arms prepare to invade Earth would be absolutely insane.
... wait. waiwaiwaiwaiwait. On the helicopter, Sonic calls Shadow "a rogue alien on the loose", but like, _he_ is an alien in this canon. does. does that mean that they soft confirmed Black Doom being involved in this movie universe. is that what they're implying. because why else would he specify Shadow's an alien? Why make the distinction if they all are aliens?
Hmmmmm... Fascinating you referenced Sentinel Prime from Transformers 3. You got me thinking.
Narrator: “Shadow only found pain and loss…”
bickuribox12: YES 😫 3:20
Bro is desperate for shadow’s trauma and anger - and I’m all for it too! Bring on the movie 🎉
We finally got Bickuribox talking about the Sonic movies‼️‼️
Ikr I hate so much how official Sonic content on youtube has no comment section
I genuinely hate to say it but in general online communities feel so much less expansive ever since trailers and everything got marked for made for kids, it makes everyone's experiences and reactions (besides reaction videos) so much more disconnected
I once saw Shadow kill three men in a bar with a pencil....
A fuckin'.....
/PENCIL/...
10:47 really reminds me of the Raph vs Leo in that old TMNT movie. The way those characters looked in the rain with the red lights was incredible.
LETS GOOOO WE GOT BICKURIBOX TALKING ABOUT THE MOVIES!
Damn right black and red works!
Wasnt expecting you here
I was concerned that Shadow would look too much of a palette swap of Sonic but he looks absolutely incredible here
I realllly hope the shadow backstory is well executed. I can't wait to see this dark shade of storytelling in this "light-hearted" kids movie. Sonic stories have far more potential to be mesmerizing.
Shadow legit sounds like he's 50 years old now lmao. Which he canonically is
They just need to get Shadow's character right and I'm set tbh, hell I'll even excuse any bad jokes the movie throws at me.
Can’t wait to see Big the Cat in the post credits scene.
Voiced by Bill Fagerbakke. (Patrick Star)😂
Woah, perfect casting.
Tails: "Please stop."
Shadow: "No."
This would be amazing!!
I won't lie an orchestral version of Live and Learn full would actually go hard. And fits the theme of modern games having an orchestral version of the main theme since 06.
9:33 I aint gonna lie, you sounded pretty damn good doing that imitation LMAO
The CGI looks way better in this one compared to sonic 2
It's the trailer. Sonic 2 trailers showcased the best cgi, while the movie often looked bad.
@@user-fj4ih2uk9o well, if the cgi in this trailer looks better, than perhaps the cgi in the whole movie will be better than 2's, at least a little
I just hope they bring their A-Game with the soundtrack.
But it definitely didn't look like a ring.
... space. where the Space Colony ARK is typically depicted to be. that space?
@@silversonome5360 yes, but if you were going to the Ark while it’s in orbit, you wouldn’t open a portal to open space. You’d open a portal to inside the space station.
Oddly enough, only the Sonic channel upload of the trailer was marked as for kids, while the first upload on official Paramount Pictures channel is still up fine. It just shows what bias TH-cam has against Sonic, ugh.
The trailer on the Paramount channel is also already marked as for kids, unfortunately
I can't wait to watch the sonic superstars review with my grandchildren
I had no idea the director of these movies did CGI for the Shadow The hedgehog game. Looking at this trailer and going back to the game, there’s some familiarity there.
It's come full circle for Jeff Fowler.

I think it's funny that immediately after you brought up an orchestral version of Live and Learn, a couple seconds after you unpaused that's exactly what's playing in the background. The motifs from it sound great in this trailer; I can't wait to hear how they sound in the movie proper.
The musical arrangement of "I Am" was perfect
The amount of sidequests bro's completing is crazy💀
ik bros content is usually fire but i might actually unsub
Was worried the strikes would hurt this movie but mannnnnn clearly it just meant the (hopefully well-paid) vfx people had a moment to cookkkkkkkkkkk
Also I'd be fine with the final battle ripping off godzilla vs kong and they team up to fight metal sonic bc that's what Eggman was up to
ALSO ALSO I've been insisting the dlc would be black knight, but a level based on the movies makes sense too
I’m really hoping Metal Sonic is in the movie and they just wanted to keep him a surprise. Just like how in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” they kept Tobey and Andrew a surprise
That Sonic 3 trailer was incredible. I really hope they find to incorporate Crush 40's 'Live and Learn' song into the film.

bickuribox12 has FORGOTTEN about the Sonic Superstars review
(I saw an opportunity for the reference I'm sorry)
Great vid!
This seriously has the potential to be one of the best pieces of sonic media

small thing but I love shadow's lightning color. instead of yellow or red they made it a scarlet orange-red which I think suits his personality more and is much more unique. also, though i doubt they put this much thought into it, they could imply that the color is a result of shadow's personality (the red) and his chaos powers (the yellow).
My guess on the black hole is shadow uses "Chaos Rift" a move we've only seen in Chronicles: the dark brotherhood on the DS
Hard mode in generations make it so bosses take extra health, and in the case of perfect chaos the level route is different, funny enough perfect chaos on hard is actually a faster boas fight than normal but more intense
I definitely think Sonic giving Robotnik that quill is set up for Metal-Sonic.
Fun fact: the restaurant with the Chao in it is likely called the Chao Garden as in the background, you can see Chao Gardeb written in Japanese
4:50 this is also a role reversal of when Sonic first fought Knuckles too, fun parallel!
Here's hoping the GOAT makes a vid on Shadow Gens
I wonder if they will keep Shadow alive or they’ll do a tribute to how he originally was suppose to be dead after SA2 by sacrificing himself. He should at least be resolving his revenge arc and fulfills Maria’s wish for humanity to prosper.
I think with each movie they get closer to my ideal Sonic movie. I thought the first one was a fine kid's movie that was better than it had any reason to be. The second one I generally enjoyed and watched it a couple of times. Just a solid family movie. This one actually looks like it'll be a good Sonic movie.
I'm not used to seeing you upload so frequently so I just get jumpscared every time I open my notifications haha. This was so enjoyable as usual!

Ah, but the voice crack makes it even better. I love the voice crack, gives him emotion. He's imperfect, he's hurt, he's suffered asdjkashdlsad reading toooo much into it? Yes, probably, I'm just enjoying life *u*
Glad I'm not the only one crazy thinking Amy showed up in the trailer
