I used to love the old Vauxhall's that had the inspection cover underneath were you pulled the input shaft out and dropped the clutch through the inspection cover, clutch replaced in a hour.
Well done Gary and dad. Father and Son learning. Love it when you do these little projects together setting you up with the knowledge for future projects. Enjoyed that.
Great video. Just the sort i like, 2 blokes sorting out their car in the drive and getting it done. Ive got to do my astravan clutch soon so watching this has been very helpful 👍
I've done my gearbox and clutch over the past 2 days. Never done it before but it feels so much better. Watching videos like yours helps alot. I couldn't lift it kn though on my own but somehow had to manage. If I ever have to donit again I'll be getting an engine support hoist. Cheers guys. Keep the videos coming
Haha, used an engine hoist very useful... but the gearbox took me over an hour to get in... Then, I remembered. There in the boot was my solution, a transmission cradle that mounts on the jack☺️ Only problem? I forgot I'd bought it😏🤪
Just did my clutch on my 2017 astra, the clutch was made by LUK and the pressure plate by sachs, both with gm printed on them too. The clutch pedal was light after replacing too, it felt weird but it works perfectly
Great piece of fault finding, finding the root cause, LUK clutches are the best, they were supplied to Engine Assembly at Ford Engine Plant when I worked there. 👍
Been a while since I've dropped subframe on Astra mk4 need to sort out Mrs cabby bushes on subframe be tackling the job wednesday and seeing how far it drops without completely removing has just made my day lol. Great video guys
You lads are brilliant. I'm just on doing my astra cdti 1.7 diesel which is pretty much the same set up and this video is gold. Thank You keep up the great work
That’s a new one on me, too. put it in fourth gear with e brake on and try to pull away. If the engine stalls, it’s ok. For a moment, Martin, I thought you had gone boy racer with yellow hair, till I realized it was your safety glasses.
Well done guys , right result. Strange about the clutch plate centre. Did my Honda CRV clutch myself a few months ago, had some traumas, took my 4 days
Ive got a problem with my car hopefully someone can help.. When driving I get a growling clicking noise coming from wat I believe is the gearbox or diff or final drive area it sounds like a bad wheel bearing to be honest.. But when I'm driving a dip the clutch the noise goes away does this sound like clutch or gearbox..it's a 1.8 vauxhall zafira petrol and I belive its the f17 box she's got..
Really like the video, have subscribed, big vauxhall enthusiest, but... had a few comments i hoped you would clear up... what size socket did you use to centralise the friction plate? Light clutch can be air in hydraulics but you never mentioned the bleeding of the clutch. You suspecred the gearbox 'but' then found an issue with the clutch... and then changed the gearbox anyways, so I am a little confused what the root cause of your problem was. Love the array of vauxhall you had in the drive, I will ignore the ford 👀 lol
Borg and Beck as you knew it from the 70s and 80s (AP Borg and Beck) does not exist now Martin, today it is just a brand name, a Chinese clutch with Borg and Beck printed on it , Brand Name owned by First Line products
great video fellas. I am getting ready to change out my clutch. Was wondering if there is an improved clutch friction disc from the one you all took out? Did you use an alignment tool? Did you use new pressure plate bolts? I have an F17 gearbox in meh Chevy Sonic 1.8L. Thanks again.
1:28 That hose going into the bell housing, dead center, under the big coolant hose. It was easy enough to remove, but how are you supposed to put it back on ? The part is secured with some kind of pin that I just can't get back in. The angle being quite awkward doesn't help either.
Thanks guys just found your channel I’ve a mk5 twin top with grinding into reverse and a pig to select gears replaced linkage re bled clutch but still the same with wheels off the ground press clutch grinding into reverse and starts rotating wheels almost as if input shaft is seized to spigot bearing in flywheel Was doubting gear box out on it but after seeing that the sub frame is easy to drop I might take it on myself and replace bushes in it at the same time along with wish bone bushes
That fault you had with the clutch plate lock tabs failing I’ve only ever seen in hgv’s never in a car possibly dumping clutch at traffic light GP before you purchased the car caused it 🤔😉
Hi mate i hope you dont mind me asking i have a light coming up now and again drive train malfunction and ideas got a new maf coming but still not sure if thats the problem
Hi Martin, great video! I have a Vauxhall Zafira, when I go in gear and accelarte I get a whining noise from the gearbox and even sometime kicks out the 2nd gear, but I’m reverse it’s fine. Would I need a new/refurbed gearbox? Cheers,
Good tutorial guys 👍. Just a quick question,to your knowledge is it the F17 gearbox that's fitted to my 03 plate 1.7 Dti (Isuzu) Astra van ? Or is it the f23 box Tia
I know this is old, so you've probably figured it out by now, but just in case someone with the same question finds this thread : If I'm not mistaken, the F17 has the reverse gear next to first when you shift, while the F23 has reverse next to fourth (unfortunately).
@@Magnettik Thanks bud ,yes I managed to get what I believe was the right info ..The F17 Is the ' push down left and forward 'next to first gear ..so you are right . The Gearbox in my van is fine ,no bearing whines or anything the only problem is first gear is a bit awkward to select in cold weather (which I think is normal )it's fine when warm ..I need to check the GB oil though soon
Good interesting video, I've seen a clutch center with the splines worn off, customer thought his gearbox was faulty,I fitted a new clutch plate, all fixed. The subframe on the astra looks quite rusty ,will this car be a project? I.e. derusting ,powdercoating various parts ,new brakes etc???
Another good video. LUK are better clutches. They actually supply them to Vauxhall from factory. Passenger side brake disk looks a bit scored. Looks good with the 17" coupe wheels. Are you going to get rid of that horrible tow bar too? It spoils the lines of the car. And hope it wasn't used to tow a caravan it could explain the clutch.
I used to love the old Vauxhall's that had the inspection cover underneath were you pulled the input shaft out and dropped the clutch through the inspection cover, clutch replaced in a hour.
@Sprograt - I had one of them and yes it did take an hour from start to finish!
So quick they didn’t make any money
In the middle of doing my friends. Done the clutch just waiting on new gearbox. Great video thank you
Nice one mate 👍🏻
Well done Gary and dad. Father and Son learning. Love it when you do these little projects together setting you up with the knowledge for future projects. Enjoyed that.
Thanks Paul 👍🏻

I've a vectra 1.8. New Clutch and reconded gearbox ready to go in. Helpful video. Many thanks and keep them coming.

That’s a new one on me, too. put it in fourth gear with e brake on and try to pull away. If the engine stalls, it’s ok.

I have another subframe that will be getting powder coated 👍🏻
Another good vid Gary sadly borg and beck is not the brand it used to be there now budget end parts
Can't beat a luk 👍🏻
Great job gents
Another good video.

No was a small garden trailer 👍🏻
I take it, it has a light clutch???
Thank you!
Nice 1 boys Garry pulling faces again 😂👍
😂
Nice job there well done guys, and Gary there seems to be something wrong with your face at the end of the video you wanna get that looked at! 😆
😂😂
Who is this Retrorestore bloke . He looks after the parrots . Good job Bert and Martin.
😂😂 Cheers 🐦
What is the usual time, i mean how many thousands of kilometers, the clutch needs to be changed.
Depending on how the car is driven or around 60/70k 👍🏻
another great video guys and some more face pulling lol
U need an impact gun! Especially when working on back !
Well done by for now
Borg & beck used to be alright not any more LUK are best
If he hadn't found that bit of metal, you'd never have guessed the fault. I've never heard of that happening before, who knew?
Not seen it either before 👍🏻
Ford connects do that as well
Mate come do mine !!! Or I drive to you !!!!
Mate I will pay u to take my gearbox out
Youngster's nowadays have no respect for old geezers - with all that experience of life 🚬🦉😜
Clutch bite should be halfway not right at bottom
It was between bottom and half way,
@@retrorestore ah ok its just when you said it was at the bottom i know mines would bite right at the floor and it failed two days later
Better clean and paint that Subframe
In my opinion borg and beck are dog shat
B & B a good brand!?.......absolute cheap rubbish
Back in the day was a good brand
