  • In this episode (part 1) Dr. Patel describes the difference between the 5 Neurodenerative Parkinsonisms: Parkinson's Disease, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD), and Lewey Body Dementia (which is discussed in Part 2). While Parkinson's affects 1 million in the United States (10 million worldwide), it's important to note that MSA only affects 15,000 to 50,000 Americans, PSP affects 20,000 Americans (both are rare diseases), and CBD affects 3,000 Americans. They all mimic each other in a number of ways but there are distinct differences. This is why it's important to always document changes in your symptoms and side effects.

Having first seen an Epilepsy specialist neurologist, then a general neurologist this is why it's paramount to see a Movement Disorder Specialist neurologist, doctors like Dr. Patel have the additional education, training and experiences with these other disorders to differentiate them utilizing tests like the Valsalva maneuver to test the autonomic nervous system and get a more accurate diagnosis. Thank you for making this video and having Dr. Patel on with this info.

So good to hear that someone else experienced the same problem I did. Not to make light of what you are going through, but I was referred to a neurologist that did several tests that lasted almost a year. I finally asked what was going on, the "specialist " suspected carpal tunnel syndrome!? Now I'm looking for a specialist in PD, movement disorder.

This info has really scared a lot of people. Dr. Patel should explain how RARE most of these are!

We made sure to add that information to the description. While he says it's rare, we didn't get into those details. Here's what we posted on the TH-cam description:

Sorry, but I don’t believe he is able to provide services via Telehealth unless you are an OhioHealth patient living in Ohio.

Sorry, Aurora, but since we are not physicians, we cannot determine, comment, or recommend things regarding medication.
