Hey, I saw your review of the Twisted Metal tv show. Personally, I think they should’ve made the main character Sweettooth’s younger brother and his partner Krista Sparks, calypso’s daughter. That way they wouldn’t have had to change Dollface because “John Doe” would have Sophie as his sister instead.
@@michaelboydston313 yeah and i hate that about people, its like the marvel fans all over again, fans expecting every goddamn movie to be just like endgame or endgame level of quality
I’ve always really liked the intro cutscene. It’s just so garish and ugly and bold but it’s really stuck with me. More than ever the world of Twisted Metal seemed like a nightmare world now that it was being run by Sweet Tooth lol
It was definetly really nice to see the new dev team REALLY open up their own ideas in 4, compared to 3 which was still kinda stuck on closely trying to do what 2 did.
@@Hatsworthful I don’t think I LIKE any of their new ideas lol. But in that respect you make a really great point. TM3 was really close to TM2 in concept and it just is so darn boring.
Never forget the voice of Duke Nukem/one of the voices of the Postal Dude (also the voice of Big The Cat!) lent his talents to this game.. to play a trashman.
That's John St. John. Still makes me weep to this day that they got him to do voice acting for the single dumbest, worst character in the entire TM series.
@@atmosdwagon4656That's the VA business; there are no choosers, only beggars. If you think that's dumb, then consider that Tracer from Overwatch's voice actor did some work for an old Wii shovelware game to get by
@@samtinkle9076the VA's are to blame. They need to build their brands better. In our current age where everyone has a platform they need to promote themselves better. The bigger stars they make themselves the more value they bring to the games they work in. Everyone makes more money. It's good business to sign bigger names.
I mean, he probably had the best special pound for pound but most of the time if you use it 1v1, you'll catch yourself in the blast. Plus the radius sucks.
TM4 will always be special to me because it was my first TM game. And as a kid, I have no understanding of game mechanics, story etc so I just had a blast playing it alone and with friends. Also that menu track of One Minute Silence is permanently embedded in my memory. Its up there with TM Black's menu music and the Los Angeles/Playground Peril theme from TM2/SB. Can't wait for the SB video. One of the best in the series imo.
@@williamjacob2060 Twisted Metal Small Brawl was the first game I played when a was a kid, and I felt bad cause many people says that the game sucks and It ain't perfect yes, but for me is a great game
@@theteto8560 it's alot of fun if you enjoy it that's great there will always be haters i say all twisted metal games are flawled gems no game is perfect
i wish i could like it but unfortunately for me is made all the main characters feel like pieced together create a cars and completely ruined the TM experience for me making it more like a sandbox vehicular combat game rather than a story driven one.
One of my fondest gaming memories is when i was like 6 years old, one evening i watched my dad beat sweettooth without cheesing the battle to win. He took him on, fair and square, and WON. My dad was a champion gamer to us back then. He’d play twisted metal, Driver, and super bomberman…… I really miss playing games with my dad
TM4 offers a lot of fun if you can get past the terrible control which wont be such a problem if you never played the better TM games TM4 has a shitload of levels and great music on almost every one
@@Pen_Slinger he definitely does, he HAS game, But he's in his late 50's now and doesn't even make much effort to swing his golf clubs these days. I know he can play games of many kinds and win, but he just doesn't anymore... We lost my grandfather last year and he hasn't really been the same since. He spends alot of time in the back yard alone, and I try to let him have his peace back there. I still want nothing more than to play game with my dad and older brother like we did 23 years ago, before I lose my dad too. You've gotta appreciate the time you have with your family while you still have it.
Nightmare Creatures 2 also heavily featured Roberto Zombie. The intro and T.V. spot both used the song Demonoid Phenomenon. Modern games are missing that. Not only good actual songs that people actually listen to but just good songs in general.
Modern game OST in general is trending toward atmospheric/ambient instead of catchy and memorable, if it's not licensed music. There's nothing wrong with that on its own, but I miss bouncing along or jamming out to a tune while I'm playing
Not sure if you knew or not, but you can use the proxy mines on certain bosses and even regular vehicles to launch them out of the map to get an instant kill. I am sure most people consider this cheap or not a legitimate way to play the game but it is hilariously amusing to me that it can be done. Loved the video TBP and can't wait for Small Brawl!
I have a serie of videos on TM4 on my channel and I blast out off map using proxy mines Thumper, RC Car (sometimes, he is more difficulty to do this), Axel and Sweet Tooth.
The little Melvin henchman that are running around in the background of every cutscene are legit some of the most psychotic character designs ever in a video game. The cutscenes have such malicious, unhinged energy lmao
I don’t get the hate for any of these games man even small brawl was bad ass! 1 2 3 4 black and small brawl are all my favorite I wasn’t a fan of the new one
I would constantly switch between Twisted Metal Black and Twisted Metal 4 when i was younger so i have a bit of a bias but besides the controls i appreciate alot of the weirdness of 4
Oh, and by the way, its the only TM with named special weapons (trash man has Lifter, orbital has Teleorb etc), in all other TMs special is just Special, that was a shame too when I saw this😕
Thank you TBP! Personally, I very much appreciate Twisted Metal 4's avant-garde approach to the series (where bold risks were taken in development, which is an uncommon trend nowadays in gaming), with Sweet Tooth taking over, the art direction, the intro, characters - some new and strange - and the maps such as Carnival, Oil Rig, and Neon City, not to mention the soundtrack (to this day, we still love to play Cirrus' Time's Running Out from Neon City). So much personality in that game! I remember my brother and I going to the game rental store in 1999, seeing Twisted Metal 4's awesome cover on the shelf and being thrilled to play it. Of course there is TM2 and Black, but for these reasons, TM4 always stands out in my mind as one of my top favorite TM games, if not my favorite.
With trash man its more believable since its just his 'big the cat' voice again, but its still bizarre to me that John st. Jon, goddamn Duke Nukem himself, voices Melvin of all characters. Also with his whole 'crazy entertainer' thing going on, i'm kinda hoping we get a melvin and co. equivalent if we ever have a second season of the twisted metal tv series.
THOUGHTS ON GAMEPLAY MECHANICS: 13:41 The codes gained an extra input because of complaints 989 received over Twisted Metal 3's attacks being too easy to accidentally input. I know that first-hand, accidentally firing off a freeze blast when I was trying to do a fast weave in a panic many times as a kid. As for why Rear-Attack costs energy: It was straight up overpowered in TM3 because it bypassed weapon cooldowns, letting you fire as fast as you could input the command. (in fact, the TM3 Hard Mode A.I. abuses the hell out of this too. 989 knew about it.) That said, 989 should have made it cost no energy, while programming it to respect weapon cooldowns. 16:38 Enemies are very easy to kill with the right combos. As for hitboxes, yeah, they were tightened up quite a bit from basically every prior game, so you have to be more precise, and learn what weapons work best at which ranges. Homing missiles over-track at close range, which finally gives them a plausible drawback and forces players to learn how to use other weapons correctly. TM: Black and Head-On would go on to retain these nerfs in one fashion or another. (with TM: Black flat out nerfing the base damage of Homers significantly; they knew it was a balance issue too, 989 just got around to addressing it first) 14:40 I don't agree that there was no improvement from TM3; the cars are VASTLY more responsive, and can actually turn worth a damn now; which is the primary reason the prior game felt so slow and why TM2 feels so fast. Frankly, I prefer these physics to Twisted Metal 2's most of the time, and feel like people forget just how janky they were in that game too anytime the levels got rampy or vertical. The clingy tires are really weird and buggy, I'll give you that. It's something that seriously needed polish. However, what often goes unspoken about TM4 in particular is how its physics let you do some seriously fun car-fu via the Turbo. Those jets of flame that fire off when you use Turbo are not just for show; they actually propel your vehicle in that direction and that INCLUDES WHILE AIRBORNE. You can actually jump (via the command input power or a ramp), turn mid-air and Turbo-boost horizontally in another direction. No other TM game really lets you do this to this extent, and it's the sole reason I forgive the otherwise wonky toy-car physics, because on some levels it's incredibly fun and useful (Amazonia, Minion's Maze, two of the Tron-looking unlockable test-demo levels).
The Machine Guns are cool in TM4- not especially effective but the bullets go on FOREVER and you can see them way in the distance if you shoot off-field. Also the bullets speed is affected my your cars speed so if you go backwards real fast the Bullets will slow to a crawl
TM4 was my first Twisted Metal so since I didn't know any better I still love it XD. Always tossed the PS1 disc in my Panisonic Jog Proof cd player and listen to the soundtrack off the disc :P After that I found Vigilante 8 and Rouge Trip and that's all I played from there on out.
This game felt so legendary as a kid. Unlocking characters from the old game like super axel and super thumper was so cool to me. But trying to play it as an adult I realized how terrible the gameplay actually was
TM4 was the first twisted metal game i played as a kid and it was what got me into the TM franchise. i agree it wasnt the best, but as a kid that had no real grasp of what the story was or how game mechanics worked i was able to just enjoy it for what it was, that and with vigilante 8 for the N64 which was the copy cat of twisted metal. i wont lie, i have been wanting to learn game development because i would really like to remake older games that clearly dont get love anymore from their IP holders. twisted metal is 100% on that list of games i would like to remaster and even make corrections to just so that way it can be brought back into relevancy and enjoyed in the new modern era of gaming. i doubt i will ever be able to do it but its a dream of mine so as long as im still kicking im not going to give up on it.
Yet another TBP banger. Some of your videos made me consider playing a lot of these games you were discussing. Especially God of War and Twisted Metal to expand my horizons. But we'll see if I get to play those but I would like to give them a fair shot.
Weird observation about TM4, but the opening FMV has a new model for Calypso, but his ending recycles the one with the twisted smile from the previous game!
TM4 is my second favourite TM behind 2. It’s really underrated, once you get use to it it’s really fun. Playing on Immortal makes it a lot less boring as well.
I can’t wait to see you tackle Twisted Metal: Black as an experience! That was my favorite in the series for a number of reasons, despite a few obvious growing pains. The lore, the secrets, the levels, the atmosphere… What a fun game.
TM4 was my first Twisted Metal on a hand-me-down PS1 after my stepbrother upgraded to an xbox. I absolutely loved it, and while I recognize it's not the best in the series, it holds a special place in my heart.
I liked 4 a good bit back then (though not as much as Black). The characters are cheesy, but the stages and the music are great and I like all of the secret locations and weapon variety as well. They tried to put a lot into it and shake things up, but the tone did feel a bit different with the newer characters. I didn't get into 3 as much as I just couldn't get into the slippery controls. Overall still good times and it reminds me of how much time has flown by. Also Duke 3d on PS1 allowed you to change the detail to help with frame rate as well. It's definitely a good option to have, especially on more congested levels.
Funny enough, Twisted Metal 3 and 4 were my introduction to the franchise ( had a friend next door who owned both). I had fun with them at the time, but as soon as I got Black for myself and continued on to get the rest, I could see why everybody was kinda hating on the two XD
Prob the control issues you can barely drive in a straight line without skidding (or it seems so bad that you feel you cant drive directly towards a power up) Any time you hit a ramp you have no idea how the car will react not super fun
TM4 was pretty much the best of the series when it came out, gameplay and graphic-wise at least. The reasons they were hated was just because of petty elitism from SingleTrac and their simps. Anyone that was introduced to this game before being exposed to the stigma (like me) would greatly appreciate what this game has to offer. According to my game booklet, 3.4 million copies of this game were sold, which is three times as much as the first game. This game being labeled a "bad/not real twisted metal game" is largely a vocal minority.
I loved Twisted Metal as a kid, but this game always gave me a migraine to play. I could always tell something was wrong with it even if I didn't have the taste or the conceptual vocabulary to understand why. As an adult, I now have the context to understand what a dumpster fire of design on every level it was. Fuck this game.
I always liked 4 a little more than 3. 4 corrected some of my biggest complaints about 3. I do believe they are the worst games in the franchise, but they are still fun and had some decent ideas.
There is a sweet spot for calypso nuke. If u time it right it almost 1 shots all enemies. Man i practiced that a ton It was janky sure. But it was awesome to play split screen with my childhood friends. Only one better was twist 2. But rest of games in that area was subpar.
Twisted metal 4 happens to be my all-time favorite game in the series, but while I will vehemently defend this game, most of the complaints lobbed towards it are legitimate and while I can understand why people might take umbridge with most if not all of the major changes, it will always remain my favorite to this day and no one can tell me that I'm not allowed to like it, warts and all. As for the video, I feel that you hit the nail on the head when it came to bringing to light those aforementioned warts but you were also very nuanced and objective overall. So yeah, the video is primo stuff.
I honestly enjoy this game much more than TM2. It's certainly not a better game, objectively, but it's a hell of a lot more fun to me. It has so many annoying things about it, like a clogged inventory of utterly useless weapons, some pretty woeful characters and unbalanced vehicles, a couple of the most awful levels of all time, and probably the worst physics of any TM game. All that said, it's got a lot of weird charm, and it's really really grown on me. It also has a banger of a soundtrack and some really cool exploits that make it less of a chore to deal with sometimes. It's certainly a much better game than TM3.. *shudders*
I still think that 4 is better than 3, it feels a bit better to play and it at least has a personality of its own. I wouldn't say its great, but it does have some fun and creativity and I'd play it again if I went through all the games, luckily Head On exists so I can ignore 3.
I honestly liked TM4, it was doing it’s own thing. I will admit that there could have been more (like info of the boss characters and them getting their own ending).
As I had said on your TM3 video. I know this game is bad but I love it all the same. I played it alot along with 3 with my little brother so I have alot of good memories with the game. I like the soundtrack more then 3 but I like the "feeling" of 3's atmosphere. I do wish they did more with the custom character on the wishes like it was pointed out. 989 might have done alot of bad with the TM series but I do love they kept Mel McMurrin as Calypso. TM2-4 Calypso's voice is ICONIC for me and the best in the series with David Boat in Head-On following after.
I have a question for you. What do you think on games people universally agree to be the worst games of all time? I'm talking about games like Superman 64, Sonic '06, Bubsy 3D, Ride to Hell: Retribution, Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing, Life of Black Tiger, Batman: Dark Tomorrow, Drake of the 99 Dragons, the Zelda CD-i games, Duke Nukem Forever, Shaq Fu, Flatout 3, Hunt Down the Freeman, and E.T. for Atari 2600. Do you think any of these games deserve their reputation, and what do you think which game deserve to be on that pillar?
Twisted Metal 4 is still my favrotie PS1 game of all time. It has flaws and quite frankly I thought it was good right out the gate, but I think with how crazy it can get, especially Sweet Tooth, yo7 can make an argument that this game really is Twisted. I’ll give you a few things, the physics can be tough to work with although to be fair I find it more humorous than annoying, the stages are indeed ti big but you have to give credit to the amount of secrets there are. Back then in blew me away, it was like the game that just kept on giving. The final battle against Sweet Tooth I’ll only give you half, yeah yeah up up down down, but all things considered if you make it to the game with all 5 lives then Sweet Tooth dosent stand a chance. Plus he’s the final boss, you kinda have to expect final, boss’s to be cheap or unfair. Not to mention there is another way to cheese a fight in a fun way. Use freeze bombs, plant a bunch of Mine’s and lay Dynamite on top of it and wait for the freeze to wear off and detonate, that’s half damage guaranteed and sometimes a fall kill. This game does give you creative ways to kill. And yeah the controls can be hit and miss but I didn’t find the controls to be bad out the gate and Orbital is one of my favorite car’s. And quite frankly the cutscenes are so scary, so awkward and so memorable that one can’t help but love them. I remember each and every character, I remember their dialogues, I remember their ends, their specials, I remember so much about these characters . Maybe part of the reason is because this was my first Twisted Metal game and I own both 3 and 4 and when I tried to play 3 it just didn’t feel right at all. It felt glitchy and unstable and not in a fun way so,I went back to 4. So maybe a new comer could find more enjoyment like I did compared to someone like you who came into the game as a veteran. Twisted Metal 4 is a good game, flawed? Yes, but still good and I’d rather have a good game in hindsight than a bad game over all and for me personally the game was good out the gate. I can understand if a veteran has issues but a new comer might just have a different experience and opinion like me and thanks to that I can enjoy this game without the first 3 games holding it down. Try to keep that in mind 😀✌️ Great video 😀
Moon Buggy and Sweet Tooth specials were SO BROKEN lol. I had twisted Metal 2, 3, and 4. Always loved the games but the physics were horrible. My pipe dream is that they'd make a modern twisted metal game but with GTA4 physics or something similar.
5:27 the weird thing is, as a 8 or 9 year old when this was brand new, I thought these graphics were the shit. Loved this game. Now that I’ve finally gotten a ps4 a new version would be really nice Sony, might even give you something to combat Microsoft with cause they’re running away with all the good companies lately
The only other game of that era I can think of with a "Gameplay or Graphics" system was Tobal No. 1 which dropped around 96. Great video on an absolute hot mess of a game. Feels like there's nowhere left to really go but up with the series.
Easily my favorite TM from the 90s. Great tracks, difficulty was balanced (except for the final boss), best looking cars, killer soundtrack, fun stages.
I used to play this game on the old PS1 as a kid and I never ran into collision issues. I guess I was lucky? I do remember cars feeling rather bouncy though and had the same problems using Orbital. It wasn't impossible but felt kinda ridiculous that I was more like a spinning drill than an "orbital". I don't understand your interest in shortening the campaign. If you wanted to spend less time why not just play a skirmish. As for the levels being too big, I find that also absurd. It was interesting that I could actually lose my opponents and manage to recuperate and come back to fight. I never had a problem navigating but then again I'm also pretty good at mental mapping. Also as a kid I had no idea of any of the D-pad codes. Sweet tooth was hard.
I only played TM4 and Black, the memories I get from playing with my brothers for hours on end, going to the cybercafe to get the cheat codes, or even waiting for days on end for them to come up on the TV (there was a TV show that for each episode would give advice or cheat codes for games, you had to be very lucky to be watching when they talked about a game that you own, AND ALSO having paper and a pen nearby). TM4 was cool as hell for a teenager, wich I guess it was the whole point of the game, cheesy heavy metal with cars and guns, and a pirate, and Rob Zombie as a f*cking playable character, hell yeah!
I actually liked Twisted Metal 4 because it's the only Car Combat game, to my knowledge, that allows for custom character creation. It should also be noted that the custom character ending, that's not an ending, is also used for the various bosses, including Minion and Sweettooth.
If and when the new TM finally drops I wouldn't mind seeing some things from 4 implemented. Although it's far from one of the better entries in the series, I liked some of the new weapons like the freeze remote and Auto Lob (a bunch of mortars fired rapidly), and the the proximity mines were a blast... literally... to chain together. Also enjoyed some of the characters. Orbital had a cool story, Calypso having his own nuke truck was awesome and the first alien character (Quatro) was a neat addition. Creating your own car was a unique and smart addition, hats off to whoever came up with that idea. Yeah it was pretty bare bones but still to this day no other TM has that. The soundtrack was great and each song fit the level perfectly. My only gripes with the game were that the levels weren't real world locations, some of the characters were more awkward than funny and physics wise I'd say this game is the worst in the series. Getting stuck in the ground or on walls, all of your weapons missing the other cars, crappy ramming collisions, etc. It really takes away from the fun and flow of the game, as you said in the video. TM4 while not a bad game is definitely on the lower end of the TM spectrum for me too. Even at the time of it's release there were better games on the market like the Vigilante 8 games and Rogue Trip (would love to hear your take on those 3 games in depth one day). Can't wait for your Small Brawl review tho. Completely agree that it's an absolute gem that's severely underrated.
the thing is, i just wish they would get remaster and brought up to date with modern graphics and game engines so that their true potential can be seen. bugs can be fixed, balancing issues corrected and so on.... actually, i have been wanting to learn 3D modeling and game development because there are a lot of older games that if remastered could likely outsell or out perform most of the AAA garbage that's being pushed now a days. i already have ideas for how it would work, there would be classic mode so everything would be the same but with the graphical and audio improvements, and then there would be the reworked option where it fixes a lot of what's broken and overall improves the things that were broken or flawed before. so like how it takes energy to fire backwards, that would be corrected to zero charge but it would still respect the cooldown for weapon fire because it was broken as all hell in TM3. or how the sweet tooth fight is way overpowered, i would fix it so that sweet tooth cant spam the same special attack relentlessly as TBP points out. just things like that would be my goal with a remaster if i was to try my hand at doing it which i do intend to try eventually. im still learning while balancing two jobs so progress is SLOW. but one day i hope to be able to make that dream a reality.
The prox mines with the remote explosives made for excellent trap setting. You could daisy chain the prox mines or stack a shit ton on top of each other and roll out. Use the remote to detonate remotely if an enemy gets close but not close enough. Was how I originally beat moon buggy since the tram tunnel acts as a bottle neck.
I have all of the games. I have the ps1 games emulated on my tablet for my lunch breaks at work .... guess which one I play religiously ? Tm4 ... your not gonna convince me it was bad I'd love more content and more tracks , and locations and characters and cars sure and the older ones felt different yeah ...but they suck in terms of controlling. The vehicle clarity of the heck I'm looking at and ect. .... hands down disagree but I respect your choice
This game really shines on the hard difficult, it improves the action of the game. And you can even create match against all bosses in the same map. I used to play the tournament with I.A. ally and challenged myself to not let my ally dies, if it dies i just reset the map and play again until i finish the match ( it's really difficult against Moon Buggy and Sweet Tooth )
TM4 was my only childhood Twisted Metal 4. while you are right the TM4 cutscenes are uncanny i love the first cutscene specifically. the voiceover is great and I think they actually did a good job with the 3D designs compared to 3. it felt really intimidating as a kid and I didnt play the game too much tbh. overall I really love the weird creepy presentation this game has with the music and design even so
I remember spamming proximity mines at the opening of the tent in carnival and just watching SweetTooth set them off to his untimely demise. It sent him flying out of the arena everytime. As warthog you could lay his special down at the same spot and really have some fireworks.
You can insta-kill anyone in this game by placing three proximity mines together after using a teleporter, lol. Just make sure there's no roof above it, so they will be sent out of bounds.
I think with Road Rage the freeway section was designed with the idea of the freeway sector being a separate arena, the intention being that combat there would be very high speed drive by type fighting
I only TRUELY played 2, 4, black, and Head On. By truly I mean I put a decent amount of time into. Never played 1 or 3, and only played a LITTLE bit of Small Brawl. I can say that I put the most time into 4. I had SO much fun with it back in the day, so was kinda surprised to see that everyone shits all over the game when I got older. Was it an amazing game? No. But was it fun? I'd say hell yes.
I think that if 4 didn't have such goofy characters, I would like it. It is such a turnoff for me personally that it makes me unable to want to play the game because I have no desire to play as anyone. Calypso is about the only one that is somewhat realistic, while the others seem ridiculous.
I'm kinda surprised that you didn't mention the part of the fandom (Kongdoo) that considers this game to be the best of the series, and TM2 to be the worst.
@@FurbyParade226 I might believe you if I hadn't watched the TH-camrs who claim that TM4 is great and TM2 sucks actually play those games in videos. They sound absolutely miserable playing TM4, and seem to genuinely be having more fun with TM2.
@@ashblossomandjoyoussprung.9917 Well, TM4 is much easier than 2, so I can't really see where the anger would come from. Play Twisted Metal 2 on Hard & tell me how far you get & how much fun you have. Chances are you'll be put in the ground due to your special commands not working & getting freeze locked to death. That sounds like fun!
@@FurbyParade226 It's not that TM4 is too hard, it's that it's too boring up until the Sweet Tooth fight at the end. So, it's like a kid-friendly difficulty up until a massive spike with Sweet Tooth, like how Pokemon Gold/Silver is incredibly easy except for Whitney's Miltank (with the developer adding in a Machop specifically created just to cheese that battle, making it easy as well). TM2, on the other hand, isn't boring. It's hard, sure, but once you get the hang of it it's tons of fun. Plus, everyone I've ever seen who plays the game, even those who claim to hate it, immediately perk up at Paris, Amazonia, and the Easter egg where you can shoot the Statue Of Liberty, which is more than you can say for anything in TM4.
I wasn't saying that TM4 was easy though. Just that it wasn't as hard as TM2's Hard difficulty setting. Immortal in TM4 is still pretty challenging. I will agree that giving Sweet Tooth a hax special is BS. Even MoonBuggy's special sucks if they spam it over & over. "Getting the hang of it" is not an excuse for janky controls. You can get used to any control scheme with enough practice. That doesn't make it actually good though. However, something that I can't get used to in TM2 is having to press up, up, right 7 times in a row sometimes just to get the shield to work. I've also had times where I was sitting perfectly still pressing the Fire button & for zero reason I'd do a Rear Attack (which is left, right, down). Again - for absolutely no reason. The game is actually broken. I've also had times where I'd gently touch an incline & my car would go careening that direction & wouldn't give me control of the vehicle. I've actually died WITH MY SHIELD STILL ON in Twisted Metal 2. Green shield still up, body still intact, no health. There was one time I remote bombed Dark Tooth & he literally teleported to the other side of the screen. Again, for no reason. Not to say you don't get freeze locked & cheap shotted in other Twisted Metals. You do. But because the button commands in specifically TM2 only work when they feel like it, it feels like you're unable to defend yourself. And that isn't fun. Especially on Hard where it ramps up. Now for context, I LOVE Twisted Metal 2 on PC. That game is incredible & there's zero latency issues. TM2 on PS1 though is a buggy mess & debatably the worst TM in the series next to TM1 on PS1.
The title is just a blatant fallacy because the franshise had multiple instalments after twisted metal 4 most of which were really highly rated and praised black, head on and 2012 twisted metal games are considered some of the best in the series even
i remember getting my PlayStation Christmas day in either 95 or 96. never got to experience the original twisted metal game on my own, but did have a cousin who had it. rented TM 3, but don't think i got to far into it. i did however buy TM 4, and loved playing it. main character i picked was rob zombie as i was just getting into metal. made it as far as the Axel boss, and just quit after that. i never could beat him.
I played this one always on co-op mode, so I have fond memories of it. I never play it on single player, it just feels so long and the enemies health bars take forever to go down. O~0 At least the cars are fast. Twisted Metal 3 is just unplayable for me, I hate it.
25:44 correction - the game IN fact gets more difficult when you load your finished save data after replaying the first stage on the finished save data. The AI will become more difficult every time you finish the game on the same save data which is known as loop. i reached loop 8 or something on the same save data and it became noticeably more difficult.
I remember liking 3 and 4 as a kid use too play these at a homies house in my neighborhood.. as a child we don't know any better of course.. even if they are trash now they were fun too play with friends
Ngl this one is one of my favorites specifically because of the Boss Characters. All of them, save for RC car and Crusher, feel delightfully powerful to play as. Especially Super Thumper, Moonbuggy, and Sweet Tooth itself. Out of all the games, it definitely has the best playable bosses. Specifically because they actually feel like playable bosses. Take Minion in Black for example, Minion doesn't feel like a boss character with how much you have to skirt around other cars and employ hit and run tactics to not be annhilated. Which just sort of makes him feel like a normal car rather than a boss one. if I'm playing a boss car, I should basically be in a total power fantasy. The other vehicles have to play around me, and play by my rules, or they will be destroyed. Minion in black doesn't feel that way, he just has a strong special but dies so fast you play him basically just like a normal car. Where as the Boss Cars in 4 are a true power fantasy experience. They're tanky, hit stupidly hard, and can go toe to toe with every single other boss character. Save for Sweet Tooth because he's just broken, but he's really fun to play as imo. The only games that come close to that feeling is TM2 with Minion, given Minion is just unbeleivably busted in that game. And Head on with Dark Tooth, because DT is similarly broken in Head On. TLDR; For all its faults I love TM4 because it delivers the "play as a boss" power fantasy the best. TM2 feels clunky, and Head On really only has one super strong boss character. While Tower tooth is playable, he's kinda weak and squishy for all that size and dramatic flair lol
It's funny my sister and I consider this game to be one of the best. lol We love Black (cause it's fucking great) but I think people shit on TM4 waaay too much just because it's a popular opinion. I have to agree the levels can be too big for sure though. The Highway one is literally hell. lol
On the topic of the ability to prioritize framerate over graphics, one other game from that generation had it- and funny enough it was also a car combat game; Vigilante 8 and its sequel Vigilante 8 2nd Offense both offer options to control whether or not you want "High Res" mode turned on which made the fps a bit worse but gave you improved resolution plus the ability to put in a cheat code for full 640x480 which damn near made the game a slideshow. But this was all only on the N64 version and required the Expansion Pack.
My take on the entire franchise is corrupted, or, perhaps twisted is a better description. I did not play any of the originals, until my first experience with Twisted Metal : Black. With that as my jumping off point, all the others games in the series seems... watered down.

I loved this game instantly as a kid, only to grow up and realize that a lot of people hated it lol I still love it to this day.

Same, the animation works. It's supposed to be odd, it fits the theme of twisted metal, violent nonsense right? Idk
Never forget the voice of Duke Nukem/one of the voices of the Postal Dude (also the voice of Big The Cat!) lent his talents to this game..

I honestly wish they can actually make Calypso playable a 2nd time, this time with newer gimmick outside of making him way to OP.
I mean, he probably had the best special pound for pound but most of the time if you use it 1v1, you'll catch yourself in the blast. Plus the radius sucks.
If we get Another Twisted Metal Reboot, I want Calypso rider a Nuclear Tank named Minion.

I wouldn't say Calypso was OP in TM4. He was good but by no means OP

This game was a guilty pleasure for me. I played it a lot during my teenage years. The create-a-combatant was cool, if severally undercooked.
I don't have any guilty. This game is really good and cool.
The levels are big so they dont get boring too fast and theres lots of them, I just play it when I get sick of TM Black and part 1.
Honestly... I loved TM4 it was such a fun experience and a new take on the series
My brain plays Dragula by Rob Zombie at least once a month thanks to TM4.

One of my fondest gaming memories is when i was like 6 years old, one evening i watched my dad beat sweettooth without cheesing the battle to win.
He took him on, fair and square, and WON.
My dad was a champion gamer to us back then.
He’d play twisted metal, Driver, and super bomberman……
I really miss playing games with my dad
TM4 offers a lot of fun if you can get past the terrible control which wont be such a problem if you never played the better TM games
TM4 has a shitload of levels and great music on almost every one

You've gotta appreciate the time you have with your family while you still have it.
Nightmare Creatures 2 also heavily featured Roberto Zombie. The intro and T.V. spot both used the song Demonoid Phenomenon.
Modern games are missing that. Not only good actual songs that people actually listen to but just good songs in general.
Modern game OST in general is trending toward atmospheric/ambient instead of catchy and memorable, if it's not licensed music. There's nothing wrong with that on its own, but I miss bouncing along or jamming out to a tune while I'm playing
I think it's because they don't want tô pay licenses to the musicians.
Brutal Legend, Metal Helsinger, DOOM and Ghostrunner all have pretty great soundtracks. I'm sure there's a ton more you just gotta look for em lol
Oh no, it’s not cheap at all when you fight a sweetooth with such an overpowered special that gets spammed.
I have a serie of videos on TM4 on my channel and I blast out off map using proxy mines Thumper, RC Car (sometimes, he is more difficulty to do this), Axel and Sweet Tooth.

Times Running Out is a great song
With trash man its more believable since its just his 'big the cat' voice again, but its still bizarre to me that John st. Jon, goddamn Duke Nukem himself, voices Melvin of all characters.
Also with his whole 'crazy entertainer' thing going on, i'm kinda hoping we get a melvin and co. equivalent if we ever have a second season of the twisted metal tv series.
Yeah I wasn't expecting the Big the Cat voice in a Twisted Metal game. Very unexpected.
There was a series?
THOUGHTS ON GAMEPLAY MECHANICS:
13:41 The codes gained an extra input because of complaints 989 received over Twisted Metal 3's attacks being too easy to accidentally input.
989 knew about it.)
That said, 989 should have made it cost no energy, while programming it to respect weapon cooldowns.
(with TM: Black flat out nerfing the base damage of Homers significantly; they knew it was a balance issue too, 989 just got around to addressing it first)
14:40
I don't agree that there was no improvement from TM3; the cars are VASTLY more responsive, and can actually turn worth a damn now; which is the primary reason the prior game felt so slow and why TM2 feels so fast.
The Joneses were a reference to the Griswolds from National Lampoon’s Vacation. They even had the family truckster and luggage on the roof.
I honestly love the CGI cutscenes.
TM4 was my first Twisted Metal so since I didn't know any better I still love it XD. Always tossed the PS1 disc in my Panisonic Jog Proof cd player and listen to the soundtrack off the disc :P
After that I found Vigilante 8 and Rouge Trip and that's all I played from there on out.
I’ll never understand how people love TM2 with how bullshit the AI is at all times
I can’t wait to see you tackle Twisted Metal: Black as an experience! That was my favorite in the series for a number of reasons, despite a few obvious growing pains. The lore, the secrets, the levels, the atmosphere…
What a fun game.
The brutal difficulty!! I had a glitch where it would secretly change my difficulty to Hard so you can imagine how absolutely brutal that was...
I loved TM4 just because I could play calypso. Freeze + nuke combo was the best feeling, especially when you one shot squishy cars.
I never felt the Nuke did much damage which is ironic since its a fuckin NUKE
4 was my first twisted metal game so its got a special place for me
How is it uglier than tm 1?
Funny enough, Twisted Metal 3 and 4 were my introduction to the franchise ( had a friend next door who owned both). I had fun with them at the time, but as soon as I got Black for myself and continued on to get the rest, I could see why everybody was kinda hating on the two XD
Prob the control issues you can barely drive in a straight line without skidding (or it seems so bad that you feel you cant drive directly towards a power up)
Any time you hit a ramp you have no idea how the car will react not super fun
The button imputs were changed to prevent accidental special moves
Man i practiced that a ton
It was janky sure.
*shudders*
The only thing I like TM4 more than TM2 are the controls, im TM2 is pain to control the vehicles
The Bosses are so powerful they take all the challenge out of the game so having Endings for each would at least warrant a play-thru
I gotta love the cheesy ass custom voicelines for player characters lmao
Try to keep that in mind 😀✌️
Great video 😀
are you ever going to flip the bacon in the intro?, its going to start to burn on that side if you wait to long.
Also, if you thought the game was too hard for you, you can always play with an AI as a partner
The only other game of that era I can think of with a "Gameplay or Graphics" system was Tobal No. 1 which dropped around 96.
Great video on an absolute hot mess of a game. Feels like there's nowhere left to really go but up with the series.
988 had some cool stuff.

Sweet tooth’s teeth in TM4 is bad due to eating all the candy and ice cream
Rob Zombie shares your pain. He too is tired of Dragula, but he knows hes gotta play it every concert cuz its his Meal Ticket song.
Ya know, Sweettooth tried Mantasleep blindfolds once, it caught fire almost instantly.
Never understood why Melvin has cat whiskers or why SweetTooth is a mute that may as well be a cardboard cutout in the background.
I don’t mind Twisted Metal 4. It’s not as good as the first, and not NEARLY as good as 2, but it’s a hell of a lot better than 3.
Bioshock 1 and 2 for the xbox 360 (i not sure about ps3)has the option to put performance mode.
TM4 was my only childhood Twisted Metal 4. while you are right the TM4 cutscenes are uncanny i love the first cutscene specifically. the voiceover is great and I think they actually did a good job with the 3D designs compared to 3. it felt really intimidating as a kid and I didnt play the game too much tbh.
overall I really love the weird creepy presentation this game has with the music and design even so
The title is all 🧢🧢🎓🎓🧢🧢 TM4 is the best one especially if you can beat sweetooth best one period love it love it Love it
Favorite game in the series. Hopeful to see it brought to the PlayStation store.
Criticizing things and pointing out certain faults and things is how things improve though
Just make sure there's no roof above it, so they will be sent out of bounds.
you think that cypriss hill song slaps? XD bruh go away. lv2 song
TM4 was by far my favorite of the series, i still love it!❤
I think with Road Rage the freeway section was designed with the idea of the freeway sector being a separate arena, the intention being that combat there would be very high speed drive by type fighting
I didn't know people didn't like Twitter metal 4 I love it when I was kid
I'm kinda surprised that you didn't mention the part of the fandom (Kongdoo) that considers this game to be the best of the series, and TM2 to be the worst.
Because that would be acknowledging that TM4 good & TM2 bad. And we can't have that mindset put out there.
*Even though it's true*
The title is just a blatant fallacy because the franshise had multiple instalments after twisted metal 4 most of which were really highly rated and praised black, head on and 2012 twisted metal games are considered some of the best in the series even
In conclusion video good title bad
Too bad Sweet tooth's wish didn't work on the cringe worthy show
i remember getting my PlayStation Christmas day in either 95 or 96. never got to experience the original twisted metal game on my own, but did have a cousin who had it. rented TM 3, but don't think i got to far into it. i did however buy TM 4, and loved playing it. main character i picked was rob zombie as i was just getting into metal. made it as far as the Axel boss, and just quit after that. i never could beat him.
I played this one always on co-op mode, so I have fond memories of it. I never play it on single player, it just feels so long and the enemies health bars take forever to go down. O~0 At least the cars are fast. Twisted Metal 3 is just unplayable for me, I hate it.
I had the Rob Zombie cd WITH the X on his head.
25:44 correction - the game IN fact gets more difficult when you load your finished save data after replaying the first stage on the finished save data.
The AI will become more difficult every time you finish the game on the same save data which is known as loop.
i reached loop 8 or something on the same save data and it became noticeably more difficult.
good gameplay like small brawl but story and some characters are the worst.
People love to hate things these days. I loved TM4
I remember liking 3 and 4 as a kid use too play these at a homies house in my neighborhood.. as a child we don't know any better of course.. even if they are trash now they were fun too play with friends
Why does Meter Maid look like Brandi Love ?
Someone actually dislikes Head-on?
I loved Twisted Metal 4
This game was my first twisted metal game back in fourth grade. I remember getting this game in 2011 and playing it with my brother on PS1.
Resounding yes. This game sucks.
"How the best game in the franchise killed the franchise"
