Just to be clear , in regards to Image Quality FSR is not perfect , it also has some issues and artifacts for example when using Sniper Scope or Binoculars , but around moving foliage and trees it looks cleaner and sharper compare to DLSS and choosing FSR or DLSS is purely down to personal preference , personally I hate shimmering and aliasing that's why I prefer FSR in this game but if you want to use DLSS I recommend downloading the latest version from here : www.techpowerup.com/download/nvidia-dlss-dll/ and replace the DLL inside the game's files and use Reshade (or any other tool) to apply some sharpening and make the image looks better. And If you can get good performance at native resolution and you want the best Image Quality I recommend using DLAA with this mod from here : www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/2072
Genuine question why use DLAA over TAA (with a TAA mod/tuned values). What does DLAA offer if you aren't saving fps. Based on image quality comparisons I've seen MSAA>TAA>FSR/DLSS at least as you get closer to 4k because you don't get the shimmering foliage and other taa issues at 4k.

Amazing video! I looked up a guide just now because I was struggling in the tall trees area, in the 45 fps range, then barely keeping 60 fps after I adjusted some settings on my own. But after following along with your video, I'm now between 80 and 90 fps with no discernable difference in quality. Plus, it was awesome to see exactly what each of these settings affected. Great work. Easy sub.
Thank you for the well detailed guide. Even going above and beyond in explaining what each setting is for and how they can affect both your gameplay and its performance. Keep it up!
The amount of impovement I got out of this is unlike anything I've ever had. I went from like sub-50 fps at night in camp to 115 and the game literally looks BETTER! The FSR change made all the difference in the world. With DLSS, the game looked all blurry and 'noisy' in an unrealistic way but with FSR, it looks like the beautiful game it always should have been. That, combined with the MASSIVE boost in performance, literally makes it feel like I'm playing a next-gen upgraded game. It's crazy how important these settings are. Especially with how LITTLE the game tells you about it. These settings should literally come with built in manuals. That's where you came in I guess. Thank you for this. Truly. Total game changer! Liked and subbed!
seriously though i really wish they included detailed descriptions of what you lose by lowering each setting. even then these video guides should include gameplay with action sequences and movement through different areas so we can see how the FPS is impacted from scene to scene.
@@lilpain1997 True, but that was on release of the game, so some things have changed a little. + BenchmarKing also takes CPU limits into consideration, which Hardware Unboxed didnt, so it might be helpful to some people.

BE CAREFUL ! - Swap out your API first! Do not switch graphics API after doing all your tweaks. It will likely reset them. I spent half an hour changing everything according to this video, and then at the end of it you're instructed to try out vulkan or DX12 and see what has the best performance. Immediately knew i should turn Vulkan back on after trying DX12, but when I did switch back I realised I would now need to tweak everything all over again.
Funny how I did the same mistake and came across your comment while trying to find a better list of the optimized setting here (where every setting is in order and not all over the place).
Why haven't I found this channel earlier? This is amazing! Every setting explained and examples shown what the difference is. You got yourself a new sub!

Thanks for this, my settings were changed and I couldn’t get it back to a great balance of visual and performance. You got me back appreciate the work you put into this
Wow thank you! This is the perfect guide and breakdown. I had no idea what most of these did. I just got the game on sale and recently got a hand-me-down gaming PC with an older 1070 TI and a i7-980 CPU, still a great very capable gaming PC so I knew I could run this, but I am also trying to run it on a 4K monitor, so I was struggling getting 30 FPS! I just ran benchmark settings after changing all these, (I used FSR) and now it's hitting 30 and not going any lower at all! So stoked!
Bonus tip , turning on risizable BAR or SAM in the bios and then forcing it on with Nvidia inspector on Nvidia GPU's ( it's already enabled globally if enabled on AMD gpu's in the bios) can massively improve this game's 1% lows figures which will result in a much smoother performance on top of optimized settings of course, Great video as allways keep up the great work!.
Actual Lifesaver. I didn't even know this was a thing that existed, although it had always been enabled in my bios I needed to download a vbios to enable it on my GPU itself. There were some hiccups at first, the game kept crashing as soon as story booted up and I feared the worst, but the vbios messed with my MSI afterburner (I think that was the issue) and once I straightened everything out everything seems to be working great. The small stutter that would always occur when entering intensive areas is gone, and my FPS as a whole as increased drastically. Thanks!
@@kevinfromsales6842 Well sort of an edit to my comment, but RDR2 began crashing again (solely at horseshoe overlook for some reason) and disabling BAR with the inspector has seemed to fix it. Enabling BAR without inspector seems to be enough
@@-Venemic Oh that's weird. Mine crashes when I try to set it to full screen mode and then I tab out of the game but other than that there's been no crashing with resize bar enabled on profile inspector. Even with resize bar I still get stuttering in saint denis. the stuttering seems to be a very common issue so I'm guessing rockstar never really put much time into optimization.
This video is amazing, thank you so much for all the testing. These suggestions took me from 62-65 fps on max to about 110 fps in most areas. Massive difference and the game still looks great.
I'm running a 7950X3D and 4070 Ti Super. I followed your optimized settings, choosing the higher option on the 6 highlighted with color, with the only change being that I chose DLSS Quality (3.6.0) paired with a 2.25x DLDSR setting - 4k resolution on 1440p monitor. Running the built-in benchmark I got a result of 119 FPS average and I am absolutely blown away. I'm sticking with DLSS+DLDSR but when testing the FSR Quality option the game was easily locked to 144 to match my gsync display with power to spare. THANK YOU SO MUCH. As far as I'm concerned, you are THE top of the top. Edit > Updating the default DLSS .dll to 3.6.0 increased benchmark fps average from 113 to 119. Edit2 > After 6 hours without issue I had to replace the original DLSS .dll file as I encountered a game breaking bug when returning to Beechers Hope after capturing Marshall Thurwell with Sadie. One tip to note is that if you using the rockstar launcher version you need a mod to swap dlss for you because if not the launcher detects the file and restore it
I'm using the new 3.5.0 DLSS version with that garbage rockstar + epic games launcher, the file doesn't get replaced with the old 2.2.0 DLSS file that RDR2 uses. Maybe they've fixed that. Restarted many times, still there.

the real joy is going through guides like these to figure out which tweak causes no noticable loss in image quality but magically boosts framerate, and keep tweaking here and there until you have achieved a noticeable framerate improvement with no real loss in image quality, rather than paying hundreds of dollars more for a better card that achieves the same framerate while keeping the ultra preset.

DO NOT USE FSR. Look out of any window or use the binoculars and the game gets pretty funky, same goes for certain weather conditions, especially easy to see on/around tress. I have tried this on both a 3080 and 6800xt and the same thing happens on both. So just use TAA or if you if you can DLSS, personally would recommend neither DLSS or FSR but DLSS is overall less buggy.
You can use a custom DLSS to fix the sharpening. Later versions of DLSS past 2.5.1 don’t have sharpening capabilities at all. This fixes almost all the problems with DLSS. It’s a shame that FSR has busted scopes and binoculars because I think it actually looks best out of the three options. Good level of sharpness and not many artifacts in motion.
@@benchmarking4386 Yeah but you cant get rid of the annoying artifacts FSR causes so I wouldn't ever use it over DLSS if I had the option to choose between the two. FSR does look better though and that is how I found those issues out as I was using FSR over DLSS due to the weird hair and shimmering issues. Now I just use TAA as both are not really ideal and distracting
I use VSR to set resolution to 1800p and then I put fsr on quality and the quality/performance is great on my 6700xt, almost max settings never going below 60fps.
@@brzimtrco6142 Its not about the FPS gain its about the artifacts that FSR cause. Its why I said do not use it as you cannot fix them and its not any different between people or computers it seems. As seen by others that have outlined this issue elsewhere. Unless you really need to push your FPS up then you may as well just stick to TAA. Or if you have Nvidia swap DLSS files over as it does help. The FPS gain will be pretty much identical to DLSS .
A lot of people thing this game is unoptimized for a 2019 game but the game is just massively futurepeoofed. That cant be said about the pc ports that come out these days.

Hardware Unboxed released their findings a number of years ago and they have really made a difference for many, many people. I used them myself for a while because it does provide a good base for visuals to performance. But...I have no idea what graphics drivers they were using then. With all the updates to all graphics cards up to this point in time, I think starting with Hardware Unboxed is still a good starting point, and the individual players can tweak it from there.

Thanks for this guide. For me it was the long shadows setting that hit my performance hard. Switching long shadows off lowered my CPU utilization by around 5%. Wild how some systems have no issues on some settings. I have a very good mid-high range setup, but figured out after it was built that Rockstar games just do not like my system for whatever reason. Optimizing GTA V and RDR2 have been a process.
What did you end up doing for GTAV? I ended up perfecting it, perfecting the mods, then Rockstar forced the usual update and a lot of things broke. Have you been able to prevent GTA from updating?
@@The1Music2MyEars tbh I ended up uninstalling GTA V. It just wasn't worth the headache for a game I had already almost 100% on console. You might already know this from your own optimization efforts, but if you're playing with uncapped fps GTA V engine starts to enter an uncontrollable 'stutter' effect around 160-180 fps, and every guide I've seen recommends cranking the settings up as high as possible to limit your fps to below that range. Good luck with the updates.
Awesome video mate! Note: Many settings you think "Don't do anything" ie - Particle / Particle Lighting Quality - Ultra, etc...is because you are testing with a 3060 ti. Better video cards such as 80's and 90's class nVidia - will see the difference. (Explosions & dust, mostly.) Better video cards DO NOT = "just faster." They actually have upgraded VERSIONS of API's. (3070 = Shader model 6.5, while the 3080 ti = 6.6.) I have a 3070 - and I was perplexed. I could get 150 fps with some settings, and went down to 3 FPS when on max! Thought I had to suffer poor Lightning Quality - but thanks to your guide, I don't. :) The major thing for me was tree tessellation. I didn't notice how bad the performance hit was when I had Vsync on to 60 fps. Removing that - I went from 70-ish fps to 120+ generally. Wow! Never knew how frequently tree tessellation was pushing my frames down below the average. I noticed my water phyics can go pretty high - probably because it's CPU related. I have 3/4 water physics and don't see much of a hit. Then again, i'm running a water-cooled Ryzen 9 5900x. (Don't be afraid to push up physics if you have a nice cpu! If you don't, #1 thing to push down!) Thanks again mate!
@@moralsupporter Hello, I found out that "low latency" - on a good computer - is a terrible thing. It's for potato computers. Turned it off in nVidia control panel. Nice difference! In-game: DISABLE "nVidia reflex low latency." Also in nVidia control panel - "Power Management Mode" should be NORMAL. Why? That simply allows your GPU to rest and clock-down when appropriate. "Performance" makes it run 100% all the time, creating excess heat in the case, which means it HAS to clock down once heat builds up. (That "performance" mode is for niche things like video rendering, not gaming.) Windows 10 settings: "Gaming Mode" and "Hardware Accelerated GPU scheduling" - also - makes things worse. I'd ignore the advice/articles that said it's "now good" or "fixed." It's bad. Disable Xbox gaming overlays etc. Re-Shade - caused constant "running out of video memory errors." Ran the .exe file again to fully uninstall. Strangely, that and "fur quality" on "med" stopped that error, but allowed me "Ultra" Textures still. In-Game: Vulkan renderer. Ditched version.dll for dinput8. I use "Remove Bloom and Vignette" mod. Also, "Remove Camera Effects" and "Remove Camera Shake." I run Windowed 2566 x 1457 resolution. (1440p.) (Mind you, I always run OBS game capture software; so my settings with 3070 and Ryzen 9 5900x are such that I get good framerate and can film without fps drops. If you don't run OBS, you may get better results!) Here's the worst offenders: In-Game settings: Tree tessellation = massive fps killer. Vsync was too. Unlocked Volumetric Raymarch - oh god that's bad. No. nVidia DLSS - I set to "Auto" and got massive improvement. MSAA is horrible for fps. In fact, it's impossible to run ultra "Reflections MSAA" on a mere 8 gig vram card, like my 3070. Just don't use it. Period. I went "auto" for DLSS - it turned off FSR/FXAA and made TAA "high." Triple buffering = ON. It helps! I sharpened TAA about 20-40% on slider. Full Res SSAO is an fps killer. OFF. Regular SSAO I turned off too - as it made objects on wall shelves really hard to see in dark rooms. Grass level of detail/shadows are killers. Quite annoying too, when it makes it harder to see herbs and little bunnies. Grass shadows = LOW. Far shadow Quality - only high. This you can really tone down if you need. Sacrificing grass & the above was a great trade-off...allowed me to push what's important to me. Lightning quality, as I run around doing night hunts. Geometric level of detail (buildings/wagons etc) will tax the machine. I kept it at 100%. Do see a dip from 120 fps to 75ish in St Denis - but nothing awful. Next post, i'll just list my settings:

@@musek5048 I mean he was giving a pretty solid explanation of what the impact of the settings he changed would be

I was literally looking for a guide like this yesterday as i started RDR2 for the first time in a couple years. The timing!
This video TREMENDOUSLY helped me optimize my settings for 4k! I am using 2080 Ti, and am now gettings 60fps stable with these settings! THANK YOU 🙏🏻
Extremely useful & practical video. Even if my hardware differs, these are good settings to start with and the methodology is invaluable.
I just assumed that resize bar worked in all games with nvidia but now i know better lol thanks.
Thanks!
Wow, thanks. I just assumed that resize bar worked in all games.
Thanks!
This video is amazing, thank you so much for all the testing.
These suggestions took me from 62-65 fps on max to about 110 fps in most areas. Massive difference and the game still looks great.

First of all, thankls for this vid, helped me to raise FPS twice! Sad you didn't do such tutorial about GTA IV ;)

Bummer.

dlss is used for 1440p and up
dldsr may be used on 1080p
One tip to note is that if you using the rockstar launcher version you need a mod to swap dlss for you because if not the launcher detects the file and restore it

There are things missing from the optimized settings section and nothing is in order compared to the in game menu
the real joy is going through guides like these to figure out which tweak causes no noticable loss in image quality but magically boosts framerate, and keep tweaking here and there until you have achieved a noticeable framerate improvement with no real loss in image quality, rather than paying hundreds of dollars more for a better card that achieves the same framerate while keeping the ultra preset.
Why did you do this in random? You should have done this in the order.

Thanks for the guide! I was so lost with all the settings, and wanted best quality & performance for my hardware.. this guide did just that!
Yes both FSR and DLSS have problems but overall imo FSR looks more stable and sharper specially around moving foliage and trees.
The best performance I’ve seen yet. Thank you.
A lot of people thing this game is unoptimized for a 2019 game but the game is just massively futurepeoofed. That cant be said about the pc ports that come out these days.
Yeah the second I saw the menu on release, I figured you can get the equivalent of a PS6 remaster.
Woow, this is an amazing video, extensive benchmark and explanations of different settings impact on performance. Thanks for this vid man, you've SIR earned my sub.
How do you think this compares to the Hardware Unboxed optimization guide?
Considering its a more recent vídeo and benchmarKing always lean to the better visual fidelity side, i would say his settings are probably better looking but with little to no difference on the fps
Lets hope the King himself answers it
Hardware Unboxed released their findings a number of years ago and they have really made a difference for many, many people.

This is very useful, I went from about 55 fps to about 70 without noticeable quality change!
Legitimately one of the most useful YT channels on the platform, I'm always recommending your videos to friends
I just want to tell you that this guide is amazing. Thanks for your work.
Awesome video mate! Note: Many settings you think "Don't do anything" ie - Particle / Particle Lighting Quality - Ultra, etc...is because you are testing with a 3060 ti. Better video cards such as 80's and 90's class nVidia - will see the difference. (Explosions & dust, mostly.)
Better video cards DO NOT = "just faster." They actually have upgraded VERSIONS of API's. (3070 = Shader model 6.5, while the 3080 ti = 6.6.)
I have a 3070 - and I was perplexed. I could get 150 fps with some settings, and went down to 3 FPS when on max!
Thought I had to suffer poor Lightning Quality - but thanks to your guide, I don't. :)
The major thing for me was tree tessellation.
What settings changed the graphics the most for you?
@@moralsupporter Hello, I found out that "low latency" - on a good computer - is a terrible thing. It's for potato computers. Turned it off in nVidia control panel. Nice difference! In-game: DISABLE "nVidia reflex low latency." Also in nVidia control panel - "Power Management Mode" should be NORMAL. Why? That simply allows your GPU to rest and clock-down when appropriate. "Performance" makes it run 100% all the time, creating excess heat in the case, which means it HAS to clock down once heat builds up. (That "performance" mode is for niche things like video rendering, not gaming.)
Windows 10 settings: "Gaming Mode" and "Hardware Accelerated GPU scheduling" - also - makes things worse.
Also, "Remove Camera Effects" and "Remove Camera Shake."
I run Windowed 2566 x 1457 resolution. (1440p.) (Mind you, I always run OBS game capture software; so my settings with 3070 and Ryzen 9 5900x are such that I get good framerate and can film without fps drops. If you don't run OBS, you may get better results!)
Here's the worst offenders:
In-Game settings: Tree tessellation = massive fps killer.

Tip: Save and restart game from shut-down if your deadeye core ever reaches 0. Bug where the cam starts swinging around like you're drunk at zero - doesn't go away if you eat/snake oil. Kills fps and makes me sick.
hope this helps!
I was looking for optimization tips like this for ages before starting this game, but most videos out there are bogus and don't have any detailed explanation like yours, so thank you very much for that ❤❤ .
Finished chapter 5 a couple of hours ago, with 40 FPS :") . Might actually restart the game to enjoy it properly this time, with higher frame rates that is 😊
Firstly, thank you for your super informative and easy to understand video. 10/10.
After getting an asus 4k 48" OLED on my asus 3090 , I wanted to revisit the game and see if it made a difference visually. The answer was yes and no. Your video has made it super easy and stopped the confusion.
I have used all of your settings including the yellow settings and now I am somewhere in the ball park of great graphics and decent fps sitting around 85 - 90 as I type.
Thanks again my friend!
Thanks again, saves so much time that you've compared these for us already.
Time to finally check this game off the bucket list 👌🏻
Good work sir. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Just got a new gaming build and want to optimize my experience with these games as much as possible. Gave you a like and I subscribed. I ran a benchmark with these settings and It's averaging 100 fps with Vulkan api. Good stuff!
This guide is amazing. I went from 38-40 fps with all max settings to around 98-120 fps with this video. Best part is the game still looks the same!
legit good guide, improved my performance by like 40% ingame thanks a lot
