  • Here's my review for Star Trek: Generations, TNG's first big-screen outing that still divides both Trekkies and bridge enthusiasts more than 30 years later.

Ahhh Generations. I saw this in the mid-90s when it was shown on Sky movies. But we didn’t have sky so I got my mum to ask our next door neighbor to ask if I could go round there to watch it. She kindly let me and supplied me with cans of Diet Coke to drink while I was there 😄

Great memory. I wish mine was as good: I has the chance to see this at the cinema, but refused as it meant missing out on a trip to my grandparents.

This review pretty much sums it up for me as well. I want to like it despite its flaws (especially given what NuTrek has become).
I really like the bits between Kirk and Picard but I wish it was more than “Would you like to punch an old guy in the desert rather the live in fake heaven?”.

Maybe im biased for watching it as a very young lad, but so many of the scenes and even certain shots are just so memorable I can't even explain why. The story flounders but the craft behind the production is gorgeous to behold, it all holds up quite well.

I feel the same way. It's cliched to say now, but they *really* don't make 'em like they used to.

The music is great. Probably the best opening to a Star Trek movie, and the Enterprise B reveal is the 💣

Agreed, love both the music and the visuals at the start.

When this first came out at the cinema I planned to take my young son on a Saturday afternoon, but he wanted to go and see his Nan instead and kicked up a fuss. Nowadays he is a Star Trek mega fan. 😊

In Star Trek V, Kirk tells Spock and McCoy that he won't die when they are around, how right he was!

Very true, in both instances as well - on the Enterprise-B, and on Veridian III.

Worst part about this is learning this movie is now 30 years old 😢

Always liked the film and one of the best. It has many levels and is deeper than many understand because they expect everything to be explained or forced in their face before they understand it. It has many classical performances that is the subtlety. Kirk appears in the kitchen because that day was one of his cherished memories that effected him, questioned his choices.

While I don't experience this movie the way you do, it's interesting to hear a different perspective. Myself.... Surprisingly (considering the budget) the film did and does still look like a quality production. The script? First, 'Yesterday's Enterprise' had already claimed the story that this film should have used for a TOS/TNG cross-over. Secondly, we get a patchwork of subplots. Then the Nexus collapses under the weight of how it simply doesn't stand up to any examination at all. So there's nothing really driving this story except the run-time itself, which needs to be filled. And I thought Kirk here just feels like TNG writer's 2nd hand perspective on him, instead of this being either the real Kirk, or it being an appropriate sign off for him. The theme is facing human mortality full-on. The film isn't able to produce a coherent and involving means of expressing that theme.

For me Picard was totally wrong.
He was emotional and crying, that wasn't the strong decisive leader from the series,it was only till Data went a bit weak-kneed did he start
'growing a pair' and acting like a star fleet officer.
Kirk was better, the real hero of the film,he put himself last and tried to keep people alive.
Soran wasn't really evil,he just wanted as most junkies want- to live in bliss, a believable character.
A good film but changing Picard was a big disappointment and i think Data and his emotion chip moments were childish and not true to
    Data of the series.

I don't agree, but that's fine. I think it's perfectly reasonable for someone to temporarily lose themselves after receiving unimaginably terrible news that would cause anyone to reevaluate their life.
People don't like Picard here because it's not what they wanted. But life, as very painfully shown in this movie, rarely gives us what we want.

@@treklad For a film to be a cross over from original to next gen, it would of being 'safer' for a francise to continue with a common theme. In this case we (the audience) saw another side to Picard and that for me ,at the time was unsettling because of all of the next gen episodes i had seen prior to the film. Picard never showed that emotion to his brother in the series, so why now ? ,,it made little sense. Personaliy i thought it as a plot device to allow Soran to do his thing. I liked the film but came away from the cinema thinking it wasn't right how they portrayed Picard

I get where you're coming from, but I think that's mostly down to the constraints of episodic television. Movies typically always go big on emotion and stakes and stuff like that. We saw an emotional Picard in "Family" which did a good job setting up the pain of losing his brother. I can't relate, but I can imagine the pain of losing someone like that, especially considering how the two had started to grow closer at that point.

@@treklad Yes i can see your point and on reflection Picard should really of been given time to grieve but to me this is why the film didn't do as well as First Contact, the plot was a bit mushy and some characters were acting differently. I'm not bashing the film just giving an honest option.. i will watch it tonight and reflect on your words.

I disagree with you about season 3 of picard. After the confusing mess of season 1 and the TERRIBLE use of the borg in season 2, the show's trust with long time trekkies was at an all time low. A love letter and beautiful send off for the TNG cast was just what we needed. Do I want new trek? Do I want to see the future of trek and have the story expand? Of course, but not Kurtzman Trek. They don't have the talent to tell real Trek stories and they are hollow imitations at best, and infuriating at worst. No more JJ Abrams Trek, no more Kurtzman nonsense. Bring in someone who will do right by Roddenberry and I would love to see new story lines. Until then, why look a gift horse in the mouth? Our beloved crew got the send off they deserved after the mixed (at best) Nemesis movie stalled all forward progression.
