Back to Eden By J. Kloss - Medicinal Plant Book Review

  • Back to Eden by J. Kloss is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive books on medicinal plants and herbs but it does come with some drawbacks. In this review we discuss the good things about this book and the bad things about this book. We will also look through some of the sections in the book and discuss the contents inside. When looking at Back to Eden we notice it is very thick, about 900 pages thick. The majority of the book talks about herbs and plants for medicine and gives very detailed information on preparing wild medicine as well as specific recipes for various ailments. Some sections of Back to Eden are organized alphabetically which really helps you to find what you're looking for. The book contains an index to the plants contained inside as well as a regular index in the back. Back to Eden also contains a glossary to old fashioned medical terms and modern medical terms for herbal medicine. This is helpful for comparing terms used in different books from different time periods.

My Mom used that book a lot in the 70’s! Later, I got my own copy when I got my own place. Mr. Kloss was truly a naturopath, and that field is ever expanding. I like that he took time to learn Native uses for herbs. Many of these treatments were used effectively long before modern medicine.

I read that years ago, changed my diet completely. Worked at health co-ops and health food restaurant. Then I went astray. Had kids and started drinking coffee/cappuccino’s. After 30 years of caffeine addiction I just took myself off of caffeine and began eating better, juicing, smoothies. I feel 1000% better now.

Thank you for reviewing this book. My grandmother had a copy back in the 70's. She used it to treat some of the ailments that her grandkids had. I remember she made me a tea to help cure a urinary tract infection that I had.
This book opened my interest into medicinal herbs for myself. In the future I'm wanting to obtain a copy and some others to go along with it.

Ive been meaning to tell you- for the better part of a year- that out of ALL the many wild edible and medicinal tutorials yours are the best. You give all the pertinate information and showing close ups of each feature. There are many that do plants that you dont that i wished you did. They talk of the same featurea but you show them close up making it much easier to see the minute distinctions. Thank you for your attention to detail. Keep up the good work. Ah, Back to Eden, one of the classics that everyone should own, for sure! Josh, I see someone has already mentioned this but I second their comment - grated potato makes an excellent poultice for drawing out infection or splinters. Let's face it, not everyone has a supply of herbs on hand but just about everyone has a potato! And I have no doubt carrot works as well. Vegetables and fruits are herbs, after all (herb just means plant) and when you think about it we have lots of remedies based on them - garlic for infections, onions for coughs, prunes for constipation etc. So don't discount these things too quickly.
Kloss has to be read with the time that he was writing taken into account. Christian beliefs were far more prevalent in his day than they are now.
By the way, re Culpeper, the reason he was so vilified in his day was because the doctors of the time felt he would put them out of a job by teaching people to make their own remedies. Sound familiar? lol. He's a bit tough for some people to read, it's like reading Shakespeare, but definitely worth the effort. He uses astrology in some very interesting ways as well.
If you're reviewing books, you really MUST look into Matthew Wood, Josh!! Start with The Practice of Traditional Western Herbalism, it will blow your mind :-)

Good to know. It sounds like a book that would be used to broaden medicinal plant knowledge.
Video request: How about a video that shows your favorite books for beginners especially when it comes to identification. Preferably one that identifies range, so as to not wrongly identify a plant that does not commonly exist in that location.
    Thanks.

I'll just disregard the first part of your comment.
Not every plant book needs to have identification. As a matter of fact, it's better to have a few books for identification and several that focus on how to use the plants. There's no reason to limit yourself because you have unrealistic expectations of what a plant book should contain.

My apologies for my mean and hurtful comment. Bad manners on my part. I will delete it. Please understand in my opinion, without proper, accurate identification of medicinal use of plants, people ( through their own ignorance ) mis-identify and consume the wrong plants. This then enables governments to enact restrictions, laws and bans on the helpful medicinal plants. Not to mention reclassification and more information filtration instead of promoting education which could stop toxic spraying and wrongly classifying plants as bad, toxic weeds, invasive and further contributing to their extinction... Just sayin... Again, please accept my apology for my bad manners... Peace.

"Prepared fresh everyday", --- fresh infusion, not fresh herb. Make infusion daily (from dry herb), whereas tincture is made for the long haul.
This is my biggest stumbling block, taking the short time daily to make infusion. I wish I could do that for whole bunches of folks, make gallons of daily infusion vs wage slavery... Mehbe one day

Andrew, Infusions are pretty easy to make fresh; daily or every other day, because with refrigeration you can hold them over for a day. Oat straw, nettle, comfrey,... yup got to weigh the dry plant matter and pour hot water over, cap, let sit 4 hours minimum or over night. If I make a quart I pour half to drink in the morning the rest goes in the fridge, for later or the next day. Infusions are easy :) If people buy it, hey that would be cool!!!!!!

But for my plan, I will focus on charity in local community. Vs sales. Reach out to acquaintances for a path, I know a giving powerhouse or 2 that would entertain my wacky desire ....

If you use different herbs you might have to label them, but you can have them all lined up so all you have to do every night is pour boiling water into one.

How can any book consider itself a legitimate book about herbs and not mention anything about the Chinese (Particularly in a historical context)? So many of today’s medicines were actually discovered by the Chinese! I guess this book is strictly an Anglo-centric book about herbs and not a broader, more accurate book about herbs and their history.
