That’s Elton John singing back up and on the piano too! What a fun song. it was John Lennon’s only song to reach #1 on the charts in his solo career and I’m hearing it for the first time this is a very underrated song for sure
I remember that terrible night. Listening to the radio and the DJ cut into the song and announced to the world he was no longer with us, and I fell apart and I never knew I loved this guy, but I still do.
Elton collaborated and told John if it went to #1 he would have to start touring again. John had just recovered from heroin addiction. Great insight by Elton and a great song!
He hadn't JUST gotten over heroin addiction. This song was 1974. He kicked heroin in 1969. And he didn't tell Elton he was going on tour. He told Elton that if the song went to #1, he would appear on stage with him at Madison Square Garden, which he did. That's one night. Not a whole tour.
No Elton had a bet with Lennon. When Elton called by to see John who was in his recording studio in Hollywood, Lennon played him 4 songs he was working on. Elton really took to whatever gets you through the night, asked if he could add a little piano to it and a few backing vocals, it sounded great and Elton told Lennon if you release it, it’s going to be a No1 hit. Lennon wasn’t so sure so Elton had a wager with Lennon. He said if it gets to No1 you have to come and play it on stage with me at my concert at Madison Square Garden. It got to No 1 and Lennon honoured the bet and came on to perform it much to the pleasure of the audience who were totally unaware of what they were about to witness. It would be the last time John Lennon would ever perform live.
Elton John appears more than once on Walls& Bridges. Elton released #1 "Lucy in the sky wDiamonds" They appeared on stage about Thanksgiving 1974, together & sang. " Lucy...", Whatever.." & I"I saw her Standing there."
Even though this song is all John, I feel like it is John Lennon lyrics with an Elton John beat. The result is perfection. After the Beatles, John got too serious for almost a decade until Double Fantasy. This song is an exception from that era.
Everybody focusing on Elton on backup vox and piano but are you guys hearing that incredible bassline groove Klaus Voorman is laying down? Dude was a genius
On this day in Music - 16 Nov 1974 John Lennon was at No.1 in the US singles chart with 'Whatever Gets You Through The Night.' Elton John played on the session and made a deal with Lennon that if the song reached No.1, Lennon would have to appear on stage live with Elton. Lennon kept his side of the deal and appeared live with Elton. They played three songs together: ‘I Saw Her Standing There,’ ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’ and ‘Whatever Gets You Through the Night.’ Backstage after the concert, Lennon got back with Yoko Ono after a temporary split.
there's a very short clip of John Lennon at Elton's concert on that Thanksgiving appearance (taken by a fan in the audience) on Elton John's youtube channel.
One of the greatest songs ever created to induce happiness. One cannot help but to smile, dance and sing along to this awesome number, regardless of whatever mood they were in prior to playing it!
It's sadly ironic how he wrote "don't need a gun to blow your mind". But this is one of my happiest songs especially during this long lockdown, it's getting me through, thanks for this!
This song REALLY touches my heart because it was it was John Lennon's LAST recording he EVER did with "Elton John" before he passed away. Plus they were also VERY good friends!! It's hard to believe that it's been 45 YEARS since this song came out!! The saxophone solo ALSO added some style during the song too. John Lennon had a VERY unique way of writing music...especially with OTHER PEOPLE!! However... the memories will LIVE ON FOREVER!!
Elton had just arrived in Australia for a tour when he heard about what had happened to John. When someone came onto the plane after it landed to make an announcement, Elton knew that something must have happened. Which it had.
JOHN LENNON made a deal with ELTON JOHN, who provided backup vocals on "WHATEVER GETS YOU THRU THE NIGHT." If the song reached number one, he agreed to perform at an Elton John concert. Lennon paid up during a 1974 concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
#onthisday 31 July 1974, Elton John joined John Lennon for an overdub session at Record Plant NYC for what would become their #1 single. John: I was fiddling about one night and Elton John walked in with Tony King of Apple - you know, we’re all good friends - and the next minute Elton said, ‘Say, can I put a bit of piano on that?’ I said, ‘Sure, love it!’ He zapped in. I was amazed at his ability: I knew him, but I’d never seen him play. A fine musician, great piano player. I was really pleasantly surprised at the way he could get in on such a loose track and add to it and keep up with the rhythm changes - obviously, ’cause it doesn’t keep the same rhythm… And then he sang with me. We had a great time.
I can remember the Summer this was both in heavy rotation on the radio and the do all catch phrase of the day . Whatever gets ya through the night .... .
Yes, it's obviously Lennon's artwork and it shows another facet of his genius. And the late great Bobby Keys wailing beautifully and bouncing nice on saxophone. I love this video, although it's my first time experiencing it, I feel as though I've heard it as many times as other Lennon/Beatles material. RIP John and Bobby, love and miss you brothers!
One night, I was out in the cold because I had arrived a few minutes late to the shelter. I had given a reading of some poetry at The Last Elm open mike, in Burlington Vermont. It was already September. I had hitched from Readfield, Maine to meet up with Carey Stephens as he finished working the apple harvest south of Burlington, along Lake Champlain. So anyway, I went under a porch of some old house, lay on the dried leaves in the corner made by two walls. There was another fellow also out in the cold. The night was so cold it was hard getting any sleep. Then we heard music. It was drifting over a field from an auditorium on the campus of University of Vermont. It so happened that C&C MUSIC FACTORY was doing a live concert. We got through the night somehow.
There have been lots of Beatles lyrics that I have quoted to myself, and to others, to deal with various situations I found myself in - 'Whatever gets you through the night', is the one that I have quoted most frequently . Seems it suits a lot of situations....and having listened to it for almost fifty years , it's still a fab, fab track.
Shawn Malone, Today there is no real music. Those days are gone, with a few exceptions. Rare is it to find someone with real talent. Everyone uses enhancements today, so anyone and everyone can get up there and it's all a mask... a fake charade. And the songs are crap. I stay in the past... where the real stuff was.
Happy Birthday today John! You are still sorely missed but we all take comfort listening to the wonderful music you gave us which is the best gift of all.

Only WGYTTN is captured on the short fan made video (the fan probably sneaked in a camera).. Unfortunately EJ didn't hire a videographer to tape the show when JL was appearing.
The reason John was there was that he lost a bet with Elton. When they recorded it Elton was sure it would be a #1 and Lennon disagreed and agreed to play at one of Elton's shows if he lost the bet. It also ended up being Lennon's last live performance.
And think this was the only top charts single in solo carreer for John is at the same time happy and sad. He deserved more, but for sure is one the greatest artists ever. Amazing history of the recording of this with Elton John. Two genious.
I had this record ...listened to it a zillion times ..never knew Elton was singing too...Was I deaf ( so obvious that he is singing!) and blind - not reading the record info ??!! Geeze !!! Love it still today in 2019 , and forever more !!
Oh dear goodness! I almost forgot that this was an actual song instead of just an intro to SNL. I want to thank Bing - This day in history - for reminding me of this song. Rock on!

This has to be the most underrated, unknown number one song by a famous artist, ever.
Agreed
I was 14 when this hit number 1 (1974) Loved it then, love it now. Bought "Shaved Fish" back then. Always a Lennon fan! ❤

Elton John doing backup vocals on this great track.

Lennon, música divina y Sagrada, que transgrede el tiempo y tu mente 🎸🇦🇷🌈
yes brother John is star
This song is nearly half a *century* old and people are still rocking to it!
I still have this album, Shaved Fish, which I bought in 1974, with babysitting money. I was 14. Loved it then, love it now.

So unappreciated.
Brown Sugar wouldn't have been the same without his sax solo.
One of my most favorite John Lennon recordings . . . how can one NOT love this magnificent three an' a half minutes of fantastic rock 'n roll?
I’m 20. Man I wish know what it was like in the 70s when this came out. Such a banger. Beatles forever live on Lennon ✌️💓
The music and video of the first 15 seconds remind me of a Saturday Night Live intro

1970s animation. That's how they had to get creative with very low budgets.
His best solo song, featuring the late, great Bobby Keys on saxophone. Bobby was born within hours of Keith Richards and they were best friends.
