Thanks for the video. I just bought an ariens iKon ONYX. Just waiting for it to arrive. I'm super excited. Going from an old gravely zt44 hd to the onyx. I do residential lawn care.
Thanks for the video. My Onyx is arriving today. Spoke to Arien's and they advised the upgrades to this unit beyond the color are the heavier duty tires, the toolbox on the deck, higher and more substantially cushioned seat and the magnetic control for the deck height. I felt the upgrades were worth the cost difference. Onyx is pronounce aa nuhkxs
I have a 2021 IKON XD52 with the Kawasaki engine approaching 200 hours of mowing two acres and it's been flawless. The one change I don't particularly care about on the new models is the orientation of the fuel filler neck. The new ones are closer to horizontal than vertical which will make it difficult to fill with a rigid funnel. You also can't see the fuel rising in the neck like you can on the vertical neck, so I predict fuel spillage with the new model. Correct me if I'm wrong. Either way, I would definitely recommend Ariens.
I have been so busy that i didn't even see that ariens made an onyx edition. It's pronounced "on-ix" and " air-ens" . About the only thing i don't like about the onyx edition, and ariens zero turn mowers in general, is that they got rid of the serviceable hydros on the lower end / residential units. They used to offer an ikon model with the 2800 serviceable htdros. Now you need to get an apex which is about $1500 more. Gravely does offer a model that fits in the mix, at a slight price increase and not 1000$ dollars more like Ariens
I have a '20 Ikon XD 52" and it's been a solid machine so far with over 200 hrs already. I like the upgrades of the Onyx. It looks like the front tires are bigger as well...not just the rear?
My Ikon in the video is a 2021 model. It's hard to say if the front tires were enlarged on all of the 2023 Ikon models or just on the Onyx. Hopefully someone else knows for sure.
In addition, there are now models from competitors that actually have better seat suspension. If I ever need another that will be a feature I want to check out. I tried one earlier this year and it made me seasick ;-)
The onyx appears to be so much higher up. Wouldn't that make it more prone to tipping over? Specially, if you have to mow on hillside's what are your thoughts
I have a 2022 Ariens Ikon XD 52 Limited Edition and love it. Nice video of the new Onyx. I did notice it as does the 2023 Ikon XD have the gas fill up cap more forward on the mowers. I have heard and seen that this is an issue. It can get hit by a branch or other things and if hit, tend to crack and break the tank. Also the tank is around $400. Had a friend who just had to get a new tank on his new 2023 Ikon. I feel this is a bad design. Other then that I really like tje new model. Tje headlights look real sharp and they have a side step on the leftist so you don't need to step on the deck and climbing on is a lot easier. Just wanted to mention about the gas cap/ tank issue. Be careful not to hit anything against that gas cap. $400 for a tank is excessive in my opinion.
I've been looking at this model. Still unsure about since I can barely get much info on it. How has it been treating you this far? Any problems? How is the cut quality?
The Onyx is my father's, and he just got it 2-3 weeks ago. I can't speak to that model in particular, but I've had my Ikon 52XD for 2 years and have really liked it so far. I have no reason to believe the Onyx won't be just as good or even better. I have videos of my Ikon doing regular mowing, wet grass and leaf cleanup on the channel.
I jut received my IKON ONYX. I cannot get the deck to lower regardless what Inch hole I use. I'm assuming it's in some sort of locking mode for transport. Thanks ahead of time.
I’m sorry, but the Onyx is my fathers and I’m not nearby. Next time I’m there I’ll look and let you know. It appears Ariens offers a transport lock kit for the Ikons. Perhaps you’re has one. Looks like a big silver pin you pull out.
@@BuildALotAcres Thank you for responding. Im hesitant on yanking pins. Lol however there is one pin on each side that looks like it could be a lock. Ill respond. Thanks again.
@@nyredskinsfan The picture I saw showed a single silver pin going through a black metal bracket with a hole on each side that’s at least 1/4” thick. The pin was pretty substantial. I’d guess at least 3/4” diameter and maybe 8-10” long. Should have a cotter pin on one end
The front wheel and the anti-scalp rollers appear to be wider in the black model. But before going goo-goo eyed over these Ariens, check out the service - can you actually change the oil yourself, or is the engine installed in some way that you can't drain it out the bottom and have to pump used oil out the dipstick tube? Can you replace the blades yourself, or does that require a $75-$100 per hour service at a dealer? Is there even a dealer within 50 miles is another point to consider, and don't count on Lowes or Home Depot, they are only sellers, not dealers, and do not service anything. In my experience, Ariens dealer service is hit and miss - great one year, terrible the next. Be sure to communicate what you want done in writing on a work order because nothing else counts. If it is not in writing exactly and specifically watch out for the word "Service" because I've had people decide that means changing the battery and doing a host of expensive but unnecessary work that they decide is "service'. To them service could mean anything from a spark plug to $1000 worth of needless repairs.
Great points. The wider rollers I believe is a 2021 vs 2023 change. I completely agree on changing the oil, and have an older video stating the same thoughts you expressed. My dealer is a real Ariens dealer, but he is about 40-45 miles away. Hopefully I continue enjoying my machine 🤞. Thanks for the great comment 🙏

I have a 2020 IKON 52 inch and just love it with the blower banging unit!
Great machine 👍

I find that on my Onyx, if I flip the seat up I can see when the tank is almost full.
Those both look like really nice machines. The Onyx has a more aggressive look to it which is cool. Nice job guys Take care!
Thank you sir. I agree 👍

The new one looks like a good upgrade with some cool features but they both look like great machines
Yes sir 👍
the new one looks really cool plus has a nicer seat 👍🏻
Agreed 👍
The Onyx is nice! Loving my Apex 52
Great Team work for your comparison Sir and The real question, 🤔 who is the best driver between you too 🤣🤣👌👌✌✌ Cheers 🍻🍻
Definitely Clara 😁

what is that ROPS going to do on the orange machine?? It's so short

I’m not sure if it’s higher up. I’ll have to check. If so, yes I’d agree
The new leavers are hard to adjust if not lined up with each other

How’s it holding up? Iv read a lot of mixed reviews being it’s brand new
It’s my fathers machine. I’ll ask him and let you know 👍
Can you get a bagging system with the new Ariens
Yes you can
Is there little hitch behind the onyx ? Thnks
I’m not sure. The machine is at my fathers. Next time I’m there I’ll take a peek. I know you can get a hitch as an accessory.
The Onyx looks to be a Gravely ZT XD 52 with different cosmetics.
I agree. Ariens and Gravely zero turns are basically one in the same. Ariens owns Gravely
I have the xd and the best upgrade is the wide tires on the onxy. I hate the this small tires offered on the xd. Thing spins like crazy on dry grass!!
Castors and rear wheels look bigger on the Onyx.
That's fine, kawasaki is better than kohler anyway
Grass will get cut quick now.
Yes sir. This is my father's new mower
@@BuildALotAcres oh. I thought you added one.
@@noelstractors-firewood57 No sir. The trailer is new to me though 😉
Pronounced Air ens

One more comment, Kawasaki engine rocks, and Kohler engines are junk.
Seems Ariens and the consumers agreed 👍
