He could have won three titles, and by year three, he could have been the focal point of the team. Rashad has a point, and so does Gil. You are both right. There are no wrongs in a hypothetical. That's why you can't argue hypotheticals because nobody knows what would have happened.
Gil is basing Melo not playing on Darko which is a mistake. I'm from Detroit and they would show clips of Darko in practice where he just wasn't ready for the NBA. Players pushing him out to make rotations. He was lost, that's on of the biggest reasons he didn't play. Melo was not more skilled than LeBron. Melo's handles were weak. Definitely, he could not guard one through five like LeBron in his prime. Further, he could not go coast to coast. Melo had a half-court game.

Gil really disproved his own theory with the James harden example he gave😂
Melo can unlock his skills on defense and being a team player if he was drafted in Detroit. It's like GIL is saying that he won't learn anything if he was with high IQ players. That does not make sense at all. Surrounding yourself with high IQ players make you a more dynamic player. Think about it GIL.
These what if are silly. That's like saying what if Bron was drafted but San Antonio instead of Cleveland. He's yet to play with a coach at that level and look what was accomplished.
imma say this and imma lebron fan . it would’ve been more of a debate if melo got drafted to Detroit .
I think so to. Melo with those vets would've been different
You don't have to say I'm a LeBron fan the real fans don't even say that because we know basketball and how it's played. Selfish players don't go far in the league
It’s not just about melo being selfish but the fact he didn’t work in his body enough like lebron did to really separate himself
Lebron winning a chip on that Denver team. He’d defer to his vets hte said so himself.
@@TOoLoUd89292 your right about the fan part . i just don’t wanna come off as tho im hating wen in reality i been a lebron fan since i was 5 years old .
Good discussion!! But there’s far too many other factors to consider….like CHEMISTRY… Chemistry with the coach…and with teammates. It makes a difference
Gil is 100% wrong, and for no reason 💯

@@tellitlikeitisfresh6541 you a goofy yoself
I'm on McCants side on this one I think Melo would have been fine coming off the bench early in his career. I think brown would have found a way to get him involved in the offense
Why are they trying to argue which one is wrong when this whole debate is hypothetical? Nobody knows what Melo would have been with the Pistons. He could have won three titles, and by year three, he could have been the focal point of the team. Rashad has a point, and so does Gil. You are both right. There are no wrongs in a hypothetical.
That's why you can't argue hypotheticals because nobody knows what would have happened.
McCants slogan “Move tf around”
Melo had the talent to be but not the mentality, drive, and determination to be better than Bron
No tf he didn’t
He didn't have Lebrons level of talent either.
Thats the point tho..off the bench rookie year w those guys leading him..his mentality would of been different for sure
Melo was a better scorer than lebron @@FrozeBone
That's a negative
McCants just want ppl to move around 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Gil is basing Melo not playing on Darko which is a mistake. I'm from Detroit and they would show clips of Darko in practice where he just wasn't ready for the NBA. Players pushing him out to make rotations. He was lost, that's on of the biggest reasons he didn't play. Melo might not have started, but would have played significant minutes as a rookie and made the Pistons that much better.
He probably would’ve started .. Tay probably would’ve been coming off the bench 6man .. Or Melo could’ve been that scoring 6man 🤷🏾♂️
0:09 he don’t become a better player then Lebron but he have atleast 2 rings maybe even 3
Melo in Detroit wins 2-3 rings and they would’ve built a team around him after Rip and Chillups got older.
What if Bron went to Detroit buddy what would his career look like
@@jaybee6892 😂😂😂 Gund wasn’t taking nobody but Bron in 03. I woulda took Melo first bc of what he did at Syracuse but that’s just me.

You have to remember the gap between LeBron and Carmelo isn't just about skill. Carmelo by all accounts is more skilled than LeBron, but LeBron has a better work ethic.
I disagree , melo just has a better jumper everything else id give to Bron
@@yinkz15agreed

Melo was not more skilled than LeBron. Melo's handles were weak. Definitely, he could not guard one through five like LeBron in his prime. Further, he could not go coast to coast. Melo had a half-court game.

4 CHIPS EASY
That would have been Crazy
I cry thinking about the pick we made that year. Tears.
Detroit had a opportunity to take melo #2 in the 03 draft instead they draft a big goofy name Darko . LeBron went first so they couldn't take LeBron..
People forget Melo was the real Rookie of the year. He definitely wouldve been a thorn in Bron side had he been drafted to the Pistons
And you're on crack he would've been better than kobe
Agreed same thing happened a year or 2 after with Ben Gordon and emaka okafor
This is one of the all-time great what if's in NBA history lol
For real haha. Got me asking “what if Lebron went to the Spurs?”
Melo career projection would’ve took a complete different approach on Detroit, he would’ve been a complete different player. You can’t remove his player DNA but he wouldn’t be the same!
Melo automatically comes in as the first option on a detroit team they didn’t have a legit scorer and melo is what they needed
McCants making some sense for once
He's way better than gil lately
You can't do hypocriticals because it's endless. Melo goes to Detroit, then the entire draft changes. Year after year.
Best comment I’ve seen so far. The butterfly effect
Miami heat would have zero championships
@@BattleTruth maybe
Miami only lost to the piston in Wades 2nd year because he got injured.
Gil is obviously intelligent, but I hate when he plays dumb just for the sake of engagement. Like, we’re gonna watch regardless. Stop saying “you’re doing hypotheticals” in one breath, then use hypotheticals in the next. McCants won this - get your feet in the bodybag, Gil.
This is a great question regardless of which side of the debate you support.
I'm tired of people thinking championships make you the better player. Put LeBron on the Detroit team and they'd have at least a 3 peat
I get what Gil is saying. Melo's mindset would've changed because of the culture. He wouldn't have turned into the self player because that wasn't the culture in Detroit.
people just missing the point because we know what the finished product looks like. if he's coming into a championship contender its a completely different dynamic than him automatically getting the keys like in Denver. that team wouldn't even call for him to score 20 until a player or two is traded or let go.
@@TyShizzle121 That team needed a scorer bad. Melo would’ve been exactly what they needed. And he would’ve been the best player on the team by the end of the season
@@alod247do you really think it’d just be that easy? Between how Gil said the coach wasn’t in favor of younger players and just the stars already there having egos I promise it wouldn’t go that smoothly. We see every season how egos and stuff derail or just flat out change teams.
Both sides sound possible all I can say great debate no answer but great discussion

I don't understand the question. Melo had a long career, he had 100% control of his ability to be better and he wasn't. Could he have racked up some championships playing for Detroit? Sure but team accomplishments don't make a player better than another. I guess they mean could he have had a better *career*? Still no but championships for Melo would've put him in some interesting conversations.
This right there. I don't think they even understand what they are about. Melo was not better than Bron coming into the draft. So yeah, Give him 3 rings and 3 finals MVP in Detroit and he is still not a better player.
I do agree with Rashad in much but he was on point with this one.
Look at mccants ready to diminish LeBron 😂 Man we know what type of player Melo is as a player. He had Kmart and A.i. and didn't get it done he didn't pass the ball enough.

Depends on what you’re arguing. Yea Melo could have been a better player if drafted by the Pistons but better than Lebron? C’mon. That’s pretty much saying Melo would have been the GOAT because there’s only one player that has an argument over Lebron. Lebron has 40000 points and 10000 rebounds/assists. When Melo was drafted he went into a better situation than Bron and always had the better team ( his first stint in Cleveland ) and didn’t do anything. He had every chance to have a better career and choose not to🤷🏽
Except he had to go through the spurs and lakers who were winning championships every year
He went to a 19 win team on the west. Hardly a better situation. Also Melo took Denver to the playoffs every year he was there. Lebron didnt.
Melo isn’t a better player than Lebron
Not even close
No, because the media would have never allowed that narrative to develop let alone exist.
Would’ve been much better! Still don’t think he’d have been better than LeBron.
Gil a real life hater bruh the coach Larry brown had Iverson enough said smh
But in this A.I. was already on the team when Larry Brown arrived. Melo is a rookie here and some coaches don't like playing rookie right away.

Skills don't matter without stats, makes me think of the Lamar Odom conversation. All the skills with average stats
Gil lost me when he brought Darko into the conversation lol. He was nowhere the talent level of any of his peers in the 03 class. Darko was never going to be the star player on the Pistons in ANY scenario
The Pistons are run by people who clearly don’t know how to draft or develop. Melo may have never developed in Detroit.
I read somewhere long ago that Chauncey Billups is the only player in NBA history with a winning record vs Lebron, Kobe, and MJ. Furthermore, melo had the most success when Chauncey was on the Denver team with him. Chauncey is a grossly underrated leader and floor general
Gil is all nonsense. Det would have repeated 04 & 05, Melo and piston would have went down as all time greats. Melo would have learned from the pistons to play hard defense and would have been a great 2-way player
