Oh Yosemite🙏 I’ve traversed every corner, every elevation of that park. The 80s and 90s it’s all I did. July 1987 was the first time I hiked to Half Dome. My kids were mid teens. We did it in one day. Should have left earlier cause it was dark by the time we got back. Great memories. My husband and I got married on Sentinel Dome and honeymooned at Tenaya Lake Sept 1988. Love that Park. It’s in my soul. But I live in Montana now and my husband is gone. Glad I have the memories. Thanks for the vid‼️

I hiked up to Half Dome twice back in the 90s, the first time I had to turn around at the base of the cables because of a storm heading in, but the next year I went back and finished the hike. I took the Mist Trail on the way back down knowing I would get soaked! Both hikes were very memorable! I visited Yosemite Valley over a dozen times when I resided in CA. I hiked virtually every trail the valley had to offer. The most difficult one I did was up to Glacier Point. Those were the best of times for me. I’m 79 now and moved to Kansas, but I still enjoy hiking on occasion! Nice video btw’ 😎

The log at 12:18. My wife and I hiked all night on a full moon and then slept under that very log, 15 years ago. The next day we peaked half dome and it about killed me. I found climbing down easier. Almost didn’t do it but my wife said I would regret not doing it. No permit needed then. A giant pile of gloves to use at the bottom of the cables. Almost died of thirst going back down the trails. 61 years old now.

Any hike is harder going down. You’re putting your body weight on your knees and ankle with every downhill step. Going up you have other muscles helping go up. I've attempted Half Dome twice. I seriously suffer from vertigo and fear of heights. Both attempts I had to stop on the way up the sub-dome at the same spot both times. Keeping my eyes on the trail at one switch back there was absolutely nothing on my left side for over 1000 feet and I felt that I was starting to lean into the abyss and had to flatten myself to the rocks behind me. That was it for me. I turned around and waited for my group at the base. If I made it to the cables I doubt I would have been able to go up. Congrats on making it to the top.

I've done this hike six times (would've been 7, except one time we could see lightening in the distance so we turned around at the bottom of the cables). The first time, back in 1979, three friends and I lugged up a full-sized old school metal iglo cooler, and our packpacks with tents and sleeping bags. Back then you could legally camp on top. There were about a dozen people who spent the night. It was fun watching many dozens of people in the valley flashing their flashlights up at us to say "hi".

While stationed at Ft. Ord near Monterey, CA my group of 5 GI's took a weekend leave driving to Yosemite in1960. I was age 22 and in tip top shape due to Army training. Three of us wanted to climb Half Dome and off we went. Half way up two guys went back down and eager me went on up. They told me to hurry so I did. Half running, half fast walking I made it to the top. I crawled to the edge photographing the valley 4,737 feet below. I took a quick and very good look at the sights shown in the Video. I made it down in record time to join my impatient friends who fortunately waited for me. Trying to attempt climbing the Dome could be just as courageous as going to the top. And upon getting back after leaving at 4:30am and getting back at 5-6pm...we just fell into our tents and slept until noon the next day...then rented inner tubes and floated down the river all day easing our aching muscles in the freezing water!!! Enjoyed the video. I've done half dome 3 times in my 20's and 30's before you needed a permit. Its a fantastic hike. Some people start up the cables and can't do it. One woman needed help getting down after starting up. At the top some people crawl to look over the ledge. There is triangular ledge you can stand on and its 2000 ft down on either side. I did that but didn't want anyone near me! great pic with sweaty palms. There is a warning at the bottom not to go up top if you see clouds on the horizon. A friend and I saw them a long way off and went up. Up top we started getting a static shock passing the camera. My friends hair started to stand up on his head. We got off fast at the base of the cables. I went to touch a metal pipe that was broken off. I got a big crack of static about 1/2 a foot away from touching it.

Hiked Half Dome in the early 80's during a high water year- started before sunrise and wanted to shoot some images (Ektachrome) off the leading edge. To keep us humble, we were passed going up by a trail runner- I was told they did the full stretch often to stay in shape! The falls were incredible (only Vernal and Nevada are there- it's called the ''Mist Trail''). Could not, for the life of me, will myself near it standing so I crawled over but only within 3'-- so intimidating! It was a long hike down, but well worth it. Got down in the dark- so hungry and tired, but a must for anyone who loves the grand scene- Yosemite! I'll always remember it-

We camped where we could walk to the trail and were on it before sunrise. We beat the crowds and were on the cables with few people. We spent some time at the top and went down the cables in light traffic. We did run out of water about 2-3 miles before our campsite but that made the ice cold beers even better. Actually getting the permits 6 month’s in advance and having base camp at North Pines campground. Waking up at 5 am and in the hike before 6 am towards Vernal Falls and setting up mid campsite at Little Yosemite gives you time to recuperate from the hike up Misty Falls towards Little Yosemite. Then wake up at 5 am be on the trail towards 1/2 Dome by 6 am wear a double set of hiking gloves (the ones at Home Depot/Lowes for labor/hardware work well). Then hike back down to mid camp at Little Yosemite camp pack it up and if possible go back down the John Muir Trail it’s easier on your feet, there’s fresh water near the river and flushable toilets 🚽 just make sure you don’t get stung by bees 🐝

The Yosemite campground ranger said, "You have to go", in that no nonsense steely-eyed past her prime glare (when I asked to extend my stay). Fine...I drove around until I found a employee I could reason with, for a out-of-the-way spot to 'nitch it' in my van. Bro employee asked me if I had a tent...(yes..! I have my trusty Moss..) you're all set he said, ..go to camp 4 where all the climbers stay, they share camp spots so pitch your tent there, fill out the card and then you can sleep in your van. Cool! Off I go, (great advise.. just as he told me). I wanted to check on my tent before turning in for the night to make sure I had done everything right. When I was doing the walk around my tent, I said hello to these two climbers cooking at the table. I walk over to meet these guys, and started off by saying, "You guys are NUTS!!!" We launched into a conversation that resulted in a challenge for to me to join them do do a Tyrolean traverse 2,500' off the ground out to the Lost Arrow Spire the following morning. He said the rope can hold the weight of a Toyota truck, and he could get me off the rope if I black out from fear...what's your excuse now??!! I had none.
To this day, my memories of dangling out there 1/2 mile off the ground, doing one of the most iconic traverses in the world my first 10 minutes of climbing... will forever be the cherry on my sundae. ✍))) Yellow Bird is also my favorite sauce*

Yes I realize the miss wording now after the 200 comments correcting me 😂. Thanks for watching, appreciate it.

My husband and I have a little Winnebago that we have taken from New Hampshire to Yellowstone. Not sure if we have the energy to keep going to CA. Years ago I wanted to hike Half Dome but my kids researched it and said: "NO YOU ARE NOT." Same for Angels Landing. (Those kids just aren't any fun. :-)) It's too risky now and more importantly, it's not 'calling' me.
I have to disagree with comments: "It was tough and scary but so worth it." No it isn't. I would be haunted for the rest of my life if I saw someone fall. I would jump off a bridge if I saw my husband fall. I'll stick to the waterfalls in Yellowstone and the jaw dropping wonder of Devils Tower. We hiked around it, just 2.5 miles. But glad you two had a great time. Happy Trails.

On a hot day, the mist trail is great because you get wet and cool off. You dry off in about 1/2 hr.

I bet! We ended up returning on the JMT and didn’t come down Mist Trail otherwise it would have felt great at the end of the hike. Thanks for watching.

Did this hike with my dad and two brothers. Was an amazing hike and experience. I think you guys documented what to expect really well. There are a lot of people that shouldn't be hiking this trail that do though. The cables are sketch, I'd recommend having some sort of safety system going down if you can. Hardest hike I've done but well worth it.

That's an awesome memory for the three of you. I love that we will have this memory the rest of our lives. I think if we ever did it again I would bring some sort of minimal harness to clip in. Not worth slipping. And yes, there were a decent amount of people that had no business being up there. They were cramped laying on the rocks, throwing up etc and they forget that's only half way. You still have to go back the 8 miles to finish.

@@prospectoverland I was in the best shape of my life, but I had just torn my hamstring the wenesday before. It sucked, but it was something we were doing togther after my mom passed so I wasn't going to miss it. My brother didn't believe me until I showed him the giant black bruise from my butt to my Knee. Only two of us made it to the top. Dad is terrified of heights and older brother wasn't in great shape at the time. Cool that you guys have this memory documented. We have a few cool pics from ours.

"I'd rather go up twice than go down once..."
    PRO TIP:
Go down facing the same way as when you went up. This isn't 100% the same as going up, but it's infinitely better than directly facing that big open space for those who are afraid of heights...

Thank you, We did walk down it backwards, facing up, but the traffic was so bad we were just stopped at multiple points during the decent

We live 2 hours west and visit the park often. ( never in the summer season) Even though my wife and I still hike and surf, at 65 years old, we have no desire to put ourselves through that ordeal.
I’m with you on the whole height thing as well. Not so much a fear of heights; more like a fear of falling to my death! Lol
    Thanks for taking us there.👍

I hiked Half Dome when I was about 15, encountered a bear on the trail up. I've developed a fear of height over the years, so I won't be doing that again. Maybe hard to believe, but the cables look in better shape now.

    • @prospectoverland
      @prospectoverland  หลายเดือนก่อน

The cables were in decent shape but the wood board slats between the poles were awfully sketching and loose. Thanks for watching.
