    I got an RG Nano too and I love it so much. It has quickly become my most used device just like how my tiny mini Rubik’s cube became one of my favorite items too - it’s small enough to live in my purse. Because it’s ALWAYS with me, of course it’s the one I use the most! It just FEELS so much more expensive than the FunKey S. I do prefer a clamshell form factor but I can’t deny the quality. It feels more like a nice name brand product and less like a generic plastic toy. Plus, I’m a smaller woman so I can seriously use it for a long time without coming uncomfortable. If I could change anything I agree that I would want a different screen ratio. It could have smaller borders too, like to become a tiny miyoo mini (“micro?”). Or a tiny metal clamshell build?? Anyway, great device! My unpopular opinion: I didn’t think I would like the keychain but I love it. It IS a toy, so I’ll carry it around on a little keychain and not worry about that

    One thing I’m surprised you left out is that it’s a great retro iPod/MP3 player.
    It’s small yes but it’s around the size of the iPod nano, smaller but thicker. Much longer battery, large storage capacity from SD card, i can fit a ton of songs on it. Decent audio processing. It’s like a game and watch and a iPod. Great offline time killer like 15 years ago when we had iPod nano and iPod shuffle.

    I feel this kind of thing would probably be better suited dropping two face buttons and making the two Gameboy styled buttons a little bigger. That having said, since it can play gameboy, Super Nintendo and Sega Megadrive games, I can understand what they'd squid all four face buttons in.

    • @crookedtool

      I fully agree. I would gladly give up on 2 face buttons to improve playability of GB, GBC, NGPC, Game Gear and PCE games (what is best suited for the device given the size of the screen and its aspect ratio). They could just release an alternative version for this purpose.

    • @skycloud4802
      @skycloud4802 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattia1026 that's how I feel. I'd be happier dropping two bottons.
      The games on those earlier systems are mostly very optimised for portables on the go. Basic graphics for tiny screens, simplistic pick up and play design. I feel that two very good big face buttons would be so much better than four dismal overcrowded ones, because I can play NES, SMS, GG, GB games with far more comfort.

    • @mattia1026
      @mattia1026 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@skycloud4802 Exactly. These micro-consoles can be more than just novelty items if they have some actual use case niches. Having them on your keychain as edc is fine and all, but as things stand now trying to play everything up to PS1 makes for an all around uncomfortable playing experience even for shorter bursts of gameplay. This is clearly a case of less is more as we would get a much better experience if they just had a clearly niche device play to its strengths rather than do somethig it's ill-suited to do.
      Honestly, each of these micro-consoles has missed the mark for me: either they have cramped controls like the Funkey S or the Anbernic or or their extreme pocketabiity is compromised like the Powkiddy, at which point you can't use it as edc anymore and it competes with the much superior Miyoo Mini. At this point, I might look into modding a VMU with a raspberry pie or something similar.

    I just purchased my first Chinese retro emulation handheld last night. It's the $20 Data Frog SF2000. I knew about it a few months ago from Sonic Love Emulation. Then I saw TechDweeb talk about it recently and then I went, why the hell not?
    I'm a cheap MFER when it comes to gaming. I mean, why are some of us into retro emulation? To download FREE games! I swore to never buy one of these since I already have an Essential Phone, Pixel 3, Razr 5G, Galaxy Z Flip 3, modded PSP slim, and modded Vita slim to emulate all those old games. And I nearly got the Razr+ yesterday.
    TechDweeb and his nerdy, nasal voice got me convinced. If it sucks, I'll just gift it to my nephews in the Philippines. They make perfect Kris Kringle gifts. I figured I wanted this because I love the SNES controller so much and I needed a backup to my Vita and PSP in case their buttons starts wearing off. A lot of old games, there's tons of button mashing. The Data Frog has a really nice form factor that I prefer over $60+ ones.
    I could easily just get an Abernic or Miyoo Mini Plus. But why spend 3-5x more and I have smartphones more powerful than them? Plus, I'm not the biggest fan of portrait handhelds. Miyoo Mini would start feeling cramped. I prefer landscape handhelds. With a bad economy, it's all about being as frugal as we can. ROG Ally might be better than a Steam Deck, but I'll get the cheapest Deck to save $200-$300.
    I think the SF2000 is going to be fun. It's a cheap handheld you can throw in a bag and not care if it breaks. I'm aware it's not great with SNES and GBA emulation. The irony with the SNES. A handheld that looks like an SNES controller but can't play SNES games well. I'm fine with that. NES, Genesis, and MAME are good enough for me. I'm constantly playing the MAME version of Super Street Fighter II on my modded Vita using RetroArch. Great time-killer.
    I'm going to play a lot of Street Fighter II': Special Champion's Edition on the SF2000. I mean, ETA Prime paid $15 to get that McNugget handheld that had only Tetris. SF2000 seems way better than that. A Sega Nomad goes for $250+ minimum on eBay. The Data Frog plays Genesis, NES, GB, and GBC well. The NES and Genesis emulation alone is worth the $20.

      I realise this is an old comment so it’s more for anyone else with the same question: I have both the Miyoo Mini and the Funkey S. The size difference is significant. You can play games with no compromise on the Miyoo. The Funkey is certainly playable depending on the game you’re playing but the screen is slightly too small in my opinion, not to mention the compromise when games aren’t close to 1:1 resolution, they’re either stretched or even smaller. If you really want to play a lot, then get the Miyoo Mini. If you want something with the cute factor and super portability then get the Nano. I’m even getting the Nano since I hate having Micro USB on the Funkey.

Jitter is time distortions of recording/playback of a digital audio.... I know, I know, comments section (I can hear it now), "you must be really fun at parties." I've heard it all... God forbid we try to educate one another.
    int rant() {
    Also, no way on that display! It should have been 320x240 60Hz. *Most* PSX, 8-bit, and 16 bit systems ran games at either 256x224 to 320x240 with some fringe games running resolutions higher than that. So as you've shown, they look like crap because it has to scale horizontal resolution to fit on the screen. Plus, you said you even tried to use PAL ROMs to compensate for the refresh rate at 50Hz and it still judders? What a joke. Then you have Gameboy which has a 59.7 Hz refresh, so it's a mismatch for that, and the screen isn't an even multiplier of the GB resolution (160x144)... what the hell is this screen good for? Who was this even made for? As others have said, apparently for an ant arcade lol. The original Miyoo mini sold well because it struck a perfect balance between small size and usability. Anbernic should have copied that. This thing is just more ewaste.

      I've seen a couple of terms thrown around for that. There's a testing suite that uses the term jank (big or small) to reference any deviation from the reference frame rate over a period of 10 minutes.
      For your second point, the original explanation that I got from the team that made the original device (the one that Anbernic cloned) was that they set it to 50Hz for bandwidth reasons. Outside of this application, the panel has the ability to go to 120Hz. When PowKiddy cloned the Funkey S, they shipped the device with only PAL ROMs to compensate/hide this issue. Anbernic shipped PAL and NA ROMs, but both of them have issues. They either have the issue that I showed here, or they run too fast/too slow.
      The best part is that a 3rd party dev ended up making 60Hz firmware back in March that runs on the Funkey S and the Q36, but it cannot run on this device. It's in testing now, but I don't do wishful thinking reviews. I bought this thing as a customer and this is how it actually is to use the device. Even when it gets that 60Hz patch, it won't be a good device. Largely due to the aspect ratio and the screen size.

      @@TakiUdon I think "jank" should be the de-facto term now lol.
      Hmm. That's interesting. "bandwidth reasons" aka, we don't care if it's not working properly, people will still buy this sh!t. Well hopefully someone figures out how to get 60Hz on this device so that, at the very least, low res handhelds can be used on it without too much sacrifice. We need a real an OG Miyoo Mini successor. It's obviously what the people want as I still see plenty of users constantly asking about it on various Reddit subs.

    Taki, since I've been a long time sub, I feel the need to want to help you succeed with your channel. I have a great idea for you to increase views on most of your videos and will cost you all of a few seconds. Start linking your older video's that relate to the newer ones in comments. Take 5 seconds to mention the links in your videos. It's self promotion but done in a tolerable way to the viewer because for us, that's actually helpful especially if we're in the market to buy. If I see 2-3 links of relatable material in your comments, i'm clicking. Why wouldn't I? Wouldn't anyone? It benefits you as much as it benefits us the viewer.

    I mean for the nano, single core 1.2, it's fine. We got 2.0 GHz dual core in 2005. The number of things that have less than 2.0 GHz dual core cpu, 2 GB RAM in 2023, I'm like why?
    It definitely was a moment when I first got a cell phone that matched or surpassed that. Desktop power, in my pocket, like it's a fun milestone. 2013 was quad core 2.3 GHz, in a phone. It makes things that go the other direction feel really behind.
