It blows my mind how easy people make it seem on TH-cam. I've been doin my swap for over a year now. Props man .. goes to show how truly dedicated you are at what you do.
Hell man I used the factory 83 ranger master cylinder and an xj cherokee slave cylinder with a bracket from dazecars for my t5. Am going with an interal slave and bangshift billy clutch slipper setup once my faceplated tkx comes in
That sounds like a good setup. At the time I decided to go with the 240sx slave and f550 master, i was working in an industrial machine shop and had my coworker weld me up a bracket with a gusset. Works great. But ill look into the xj cherokee setup. Only downside being you have to drop the transmission to change slave in the event it leaks or fails.
@@SBS_Auto yeah. Having the external slave saved my butt on labor for sure. If I didn't have to have it for the slipper set up, I'd have kept the external
This has to be the most useful video I've seen! I have a 2001 mazda b2500 im thinking about doing a 5.0 swap. It is a 5 spd. Can I use that trans, or would it be best to use the auto out of the Explorer? Also, which wire do you change in the engine harness?
@Tealmoney8571 u can use a late 90's f150 m50dr2 from a v6 4.2. Or a foxbody t5, or even later year t5. U dont need to change to an s10 tailshaft like i did either. U can use the mustang tail and trim the shifter hole back an inch or 2.
Cool man. My cousin got a race truck thats a ford ranger hes installed a LS in it with 8.8 and power glide trans. Where you located at? Im also a mechanic and motorcycle enthusiasts.
Wait wait is that a magnetic socket holder dude that's rad. Awesome video, I have a 4.6 mustang and a 88 ranger would I have to do the 4.0 motor mounts or just use the 4.6 or just see what happens
@joeysimmons2779 yep, magnet socket holder from home depot. 4.6 will need tube front end and custom headers built to go around the outside of the frame. I cant be any help with that. The explorer 5.0 from a 96 will bolt in the your 88, but u will need to run a holley ecu or a carb. I havnt seen anyone do a 4.6 or 5.4 in a 88 ranger yet. Doesnt mean it's not possible.
@genoory5090 check out my 2000 ranger 5.0 swap videos they will more resemble the swap you will do. 99-2001 explorer is much different than a 96 explorer.
I have a 2000 ranger 4x4 5 speed it's a 3.0 and I have a 94 gt 5.0 I want to put the 5.0 in the ranger I was wandering about the 4x4 and would the Trans work that's in it
@RobertQualls-re1xp you will need a complete 99-2001 explorer 5.0 ALL WHEEL DRIVE, NOT RWD A 99 f150 v6 4.2 m5odr2 transmission. And a BW4406 transfer case in either electric or manual configurations. Tie together(splice) the NSS(neutral safety switch) wires from the range sensor plug that goes to the transmission.
@RobertQualls-re1xp you can use the block from the mustang, but its worse in every possible way compared to a 5.0 explorer. And you will specifically need a 99-2001 5.0 explorer, a 96-98 will not work. (Yes its possible, but makes the swap much much much harder and more expensive, unless you're going carb, which would be idiotic)
@RobertQualls-re1xp check out my orher swap i did on my 2000 ranger(red), has all the info you need, i will be posting the last few episodes of that build in the coming weeks.
Better for quick shifts most likely. I personally had the m5r2 in my 83 for about 6 months but swapped it for a faceplated tkx because I now have a 675hp 410 Windsor in it and the little mazda 5 speed barely liked the cam and spring only explorer 302.
I like having aftermarket accessibility. And better shifts. The m5odr2 would be great for a 4x4 setup. And would be easier to hook up a slave cylinder with stock equipment. But i didnt use the T5 for ease of install. I used it because i had a T5, and i wanted to make videos about rebuilding one.
Ricksrangerz engine plates, with 4.0 mounts. But this is specific to 95-97 rangers that are 2wd only. Rick makes plates for all years u will need the correct plates

@damianlindsey6177 yep, my next videos after my 2000 ranger 5.0 swap will be the install of the dream beams, sport trac rotors upgrade, radius arms, relocaters, bump steer kit, c-knotch etc

Mustang front drive accesories stick out too far. Explorer and ranger share the same basic framework to an extent. Explorer wiring plugs right into ranger 42 pin connector and fires right up with the change of one wire. 351 is possible, and you can use explorer accessories on the 351w which would make all the stock efi hardware work flawlessly. But the lower intake to fit the gt40 on a 351w is $1800. And you have to have headers custom made outside the frame and have to deal with the steering box and steering shaft. I used RickRangerz.com 's 97 ranger 5.0 swap engine plates with 4.0 ranger rubber mounts. And also Ricks raised transmission crossmember
And on top of that anything 351w has a premium price. If anyone were to attempt the 5.0 swap on a ranger, the very first thing would be to buy a 96-2001 ford explorer 5.0. They come in either RWD or AWD, the awd system doesnt have any electronics so they can be swapped easily to a 4x4 ranger. 95-97 ranger you would use a 96 explorer donor. Return style fuel system, GT40 heads, internal egr 98+ you would use a 99-2001 explorer Return-less fuel system gt40p heads, external egr.
I would stay away from the 97-98 because they were mid-body-style mismatched production. 96 is the unicorn, and 99 has the better exhaust manifolds and returnless fuel rail.
You can use a block from a mustang, but that's it. You would be way better off with a complete 5.0 explorer. You can pull literally everything out and put in the ranger. Complete interior and center console, gauges, overhead console, 8.8 LSD 3.73 rearend, tilt steering collumn, cruise control, literally everything. Bigger trans cooler and power steering coolers, dual core larger radiator, 4r70w RWD transmission, etc...
Mustang guys are always looking to install explorer gt40 lower and upper intakes for quick bolt on power, the explorer 5.0 is the most advanced 5.0 before they stopped being used and replaced with the 4.6 and 5.4. So you may as well get the better engine that literally plugs and plays, with the 5.0 explorer
@jonathanruiz1418 for a rangers up to 97... you can use 1966 mustang tri-y long tube headers. With a slight sliver cut out of the inside of the passenger frame rail to accommodate the header. 98+ with gt40p head you have to use stock explorer 5.0 exhaust manifolds or torque monster/obx headers which are $1,000 and take between 6 months and 2 years to receive them
It blows my mind how easy people make it seem on TH-cam. I've been doin my swap for over a year now. Props man .. goes to show how truly dedicated you are at what you do.
