Bach - Cantata Ihr werdet weinen und heulen BWV 103 - Sato | Netherlands Bach Society

- Jesus prefers images to explanation, to great confusion of his disciples. After announcing his death and resurrection, he tells them: "You will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy". In the opening chorus to his cantata Ihr werdet weinen und heulen, Bach makes the words for weeping and wailing almost too painful to bear, the vocal lines crawling with semitones. Midway through, the choir suddenly falls silent for a dramatic recitative (for Jesus himself?). In the arias that follow, impressive recorder solos make way for a trumpet; a perfect match for Jesus’s valiant sacrifice.

A pure taste of heaven!
How wonderful to have exceptional performances recorded so wonderfully and beautifully. Thanks!!🙏🏻
Bravo! Greetings from Mongolia.
3:50 to 4:05 leaves me absolutely speechless. Incredible and so, so moving...
The balance between the musicians is amazing, everything can still be heard while keeping the dynamics, amazing performance
My goodness, that opening chorus is sublime!
The shades of blue are lovely 😊
Soli Deo Gloria 🎉
Cordialement Olivier
Amazing! I absolutely love this opening chorus- so dramatically chromatic! Also ASTOUNDED by the sound quality of the recording- I feel like I'm there in the church.
Such a beautiful Bach cantata absolutely wonderfully performed🍃thank you NBS
Well done good souls!
God bless.
Amazing performance: and so nice to hear it at these elegant tempos - and to see the brilliant musician Pieter-Jan Belder playing the recorder solo. (Each morning I begin with another CD from Lady Nevell and the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book played - magnificently - by him). Daniel Johannsen is brilliant, as ever, in his extraordinary declamation, technique and musicianship. Alex Potter too. But actually, everything is outstanding in this performance. And exemplary direction from Shunske Sato. Thanks, all!
Thank you for sharing the recorder player's name. I was about to inquire when I read your comment. I loved his performance as well.
THANK you for sharing the name of Pieter-Jan Belder! I was searching for him (both in the picture and in the description! A perfect example of recorders being hidden again...)
The musical imitation of wailing is terrifying...
That tenor is just perfect. A voice that sounds almost weightless, like the best of the "Evangelist" performances of the Passions.
Wondermooi!
Superb, wonderful, you lift up our souls..Thank you all!
Bravo, great performance, thanks for sharing this jewel, all of you are fantastic, greetings from Chile
Thank you. A sublime performance:)
Thank you so much for this wonderful little piece of peace.
This takes me to a different place. ✨🥰 🎶 Beautiful & Dramatically done. The description was well-written also. ✝️ Thank you for both! 🙌
What a privilege to see and hear this. Thank you so much. 🤩
something heavenly,above perfectness..
0:15 - Mr. Sato got some moves.
Topmäßig! spitzenmäßig musiziert!
I love Daniel singing!
And the Piccolo flute speaking!
For anyone who does not know, playing with baroch bows and cellos without spikes is very difficult! Amazing performance.

Beautiful....THANKS!
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you, NBS! 🙏🏼
Merci beaucoup, NBS!
Love Johannsen‘s drama
BACH was heaven sent. Probably it was even God himself ;-)
Fabuloso! ❤❤❤

💞
Merci pour nos Jeudis de Découvertes 🎉🎶💙
Hello Netherlands Bach Society, I listen to you all the time because as a musician I admire Bach and everyone who plays him.
I would like to ask you the immense favor of taxing the Christmas oratory and that you continue to bring out all the best for your fans.
Thank you so much

Wieder einmal eine absolute Spitzenleistung Von NBS. Hut ab! Besonders gelungen: das Tempo des Schlusschorals!!1
AMAZING !!!
Masterpiece!
Sublime 🧡
wow thzt piccolo (recorder i mean) went crazy in this one ! all is superbe, thank you!
Bravo!!! Excellent!!!
Wonderful! And great trumpet playing, indeed!
Buen trabajo
Gorgeous
I feel blessed!! Thank you!
Hey! I absolutely love your performances, your take on Bach is fantastic and brilliant! But as someone who plays the recorder, I BEG YOU not to HIDE the musician! I was wondering through the first Chor: "Where is the recorder?? He's the main instrument there!" We already have such a hard time being noticed usually, please don't make it even harder! ;-)
Yet another superb performance of one of the great master's works. Thank you so much.
This is just SO STUNNINGLY PLAYED! Beautiful. Thank you so much ❤
That recorder! I must show this to my 4th graders who are just starting to learn to play it.
❤ ! Bravissimo ! ❤
This is a reupload isn't it?
Yes, we did a reupload because something had gone wrong while rendering the video
Beautiful ❤
How am I hearing this for the first time? It's unique, even for Bach. Is it one one of his latest works? It's so good.
It was written in 1725, only his second year as kantor in Leipzig. With it’s beautiful tone painting, intricate polyphony and expressive harmony, this cantata must have been a complete mess that sunday 😅 pity for the poor Bach that could’t have at his disposal the superb musicians of the Netherlands Society 🙌
If only the musicians could travel back to Bach's time and video a performance!@@lucadeieso4815
@@lucadeieso4815
You think the first performance of this cantata must have been a mess? Oh, I don't know ... Bach was a fairly competent musician; I think we could trust him to write for what his musicians were capable of.
@@mwnyc3976 i think most of the performances of his most difficult cantatas should have been a mess. That’s why his vocal music was considered "confused" in his own time and that’s why in 1730 he wrote the famous ‘Short but Most Necessary Draft for a Well-Appointed Church Music’, trying to secure additional funding for the choirs and orchestra, and pointing to the excellence of the musicians of the Dresden court, were the perfection and finesse of the performances of sacred music was renown in all Europe. Pity for Bach, he had in total 17 "usable" singers, 20 "not yet usable", and 17 "unfit". Even the best singers were termed "usable" by him 😅
@@lucadeieso4815 Thanks for the info! Doing this for twenty years though, with his temper, shouldn't have been that bad. :Ρ
But certainly not perfect, NBS is a class of its own.
❤ !!
I'm wondering if anyone hears the following: (1) the first chorus is sad, distressed, whereas the second chorus is happy and frenetic; (2) thus chorus two is simply the "inverse" of chorus one (3) the REAL resolution, the true spiritual answer in chorus 3. If there is a musical explanation that supports this hearing, I would be grateful for an explanation.
How can you explain this? What is this performance? Just speechless. This is God's work.
Het tempo is heerlijk. Past m.i. bij het stuk

English lyrics by Francis Browne (BWV 103, anno 1725)
You will weep and howl, but the world will rejoice
Chorus and Bass Arioso [S, A, T, B / Bass]:
Chorus:
You will weep and howl, but the world will rejoice.
Bass:
But you will be sorrowful.
Yet your sorrow will be turned to joy.
__________
Recitativo T:
Who would not sink down in mourning
when the beloved is snatched away ?
The soul's saviour, the refuge of sick hearts
pays no attention to our pains.
___________
Aria A:
No physician except you is to be found,
[even if] I should search through the whole of Gilead.
Who heals the wounds of my sins
since here no one has any balm?
If you hide yourself, then I must die.
Have mercy,ah! hear me!
You do not seek my ruin,
so come, my heart still hopes.
____________
Recitativo A:
After my anguish you will again revive me,
and so I shall prepare for your arrival,
I trust in the word of your promise
that my sorrow
will be turned to joy.
_____________
Aria [Tenor]:
Recover yourselves, my troubled senses,
you make yourselves all too woeful.
Leave off your sorrowful beginning
before I drown in tears.
My Jesus allows himself to be seen again,
O joy, that nothing can equal!
For all the good that has happened to me through this,
take, take my heart as an offering!
______________
Chorale [S, A, T, B]:
I have for a moment,
my dear child, left you;
but see, see, with great good fortune
and comfort beyond all measure
I shall on you the crown of joy
place and honour;
Your brief suffering will into joy
and everlasting good be changed.
🎵🎵🎶🎶🎉🎉🎶🎶🎵🎵
I listen to this often and love it! One thing at 11:26 though: why sing about 'uncooked chicken'?
The text hier says: so will ich mich zu deiner Ankunft schicken (thus shall I make ready for Thy coming)
🌹🌺🌷🌹🌺🌷🌹🌺🌷
3:49 ???
The recorder is hallucinogenic.
I love this performance as usual. Only - was it my ears- the treble recorder was much out of tune. 😢
Otherwise just beautiful.
ridicoulus the distance they keep beacuse some authority told them there was a virus carried by the music
I sincerely hope you never get as sick as I was from a virus.
