39.9: Inside the Volkswagen ID.R's record breaking Goodwood run | Festival of Speed

  • At the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard in 2018 Volkswagen Motorsport brought its Pikes Peak record breaking ID.R electric racer for the first time. In the hands of Romain Dumas, the multiple Le Mans winner who set the record on Pikes Peak, it set a very creditable set of times, but didn't get close to the longstanding Hill record of 41.6 seconds, set by Nick Heidfeld in a McLaren MP4/13 in 1999.
    In 2019, Volkswagen, Romain and the ID.R were back, this time with a modified version of the car, and they were gunning for a new record. This is the story of how Volkswagen's ID.R went on to smash the outright Hill record.

      @@DapperHesher Thanks but I'm going even further, that F1 car ran on 1998 tires and IDK which nurburgring record they're talking about but a street legal Porsche ran just 35 seconds slower the year before and back in 1983 when the ring was a bumpy mess with like only half the guardrails Stefan Bellof went just 5.7 seconds slower on tire technology from the EIGHTIES... why can't EV fanboys just shut it and accept that this time attack monster is awesome but that's it. If Volkswagen puts this much effort into it they can make a Tomas the tank engine break these records there's no point in this besides PR and a sick time attack car with a legend driver behind the wheel putting up a show.

    • @Gearhead221
      @Gearhead221 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@user-hr2zy7ct8h The reason why the ID.R is slower on the Nordschleife is because of the final sector. Electric vehicles just can't reach the top speed of internal combustion yet. I'm sure they will with time, but the technology just isn't there right now.
      The ID.R has some significant advantages for races like Pikes Peak and Goodwood. It's all about acceleration, and that's where EVs shine. No internal combustion engine can match the immediate torque of an electric motor.

    Impressive.
    But I was watching videos of Andy Burton's Peugeot Cosworth 306 rally car yesterday. The sound of its ex-DTM V6 actually brought tears to my eyes. Sound is an important part of the experience in Motorsport.
    As quick as the electric cars are, they lack the aural experience of combustion engines.
    I went to the British GP in 2017. There were two two-seater cars doing VIP passenger rides. I think one was V8, the other was V10. You could tell where they were on-track by the sound. The two of them made more noise than the entire (current) F1 grid.
    I took the opportunity of buying a 7.5 litre big block Chevy powered 1955 Chevy Gasser a couple of years ago, because who knows how much longer we'll be able to hear engines like that?

    How do you know how fast you can go through a corner in an electric race car? In a combustion engine you know, this corner In can take in the 4th gear, that corner in 2nd gear etc. In an electric car you don’t have that feedback… drove this car in RaceRoom race sim but that is really hard to determine…

      There's more to it than just gear numbers. For example, even in a ICE car, you could still take a corner in 5th gear but have 10 KM/H higher apex speed therefore drivers usually have delta times on their steering which shows how far behind/ahead they are compared to their own previous best/their competitor's. They can glance at the delta time to see that they might be 0.5s ahead of their previous best at turn 3 and thus realize that the track is offering more grip to faster so they push harder on the next turn.

      I think you'd have to start at being an amazing French race car driver to understand how, and work backwards from there.

      You simply just think about how fast you need to go.

    Do the participants get a bunch of practice runs up the hill before the crowds arrive? Sorry if that sounds like a noob question, but it occurred to me, it would be difficult to get such a good time on a first run

    I ratter watch (hear) Mr Heidfeld record all day over the ID.R's
    Sir Dumas is a great driver, but this electric thing is good for a lap or run, not a entire race... yet.
    ... abd about that MP4-13 V10 sound. Lovely!

    Would rather go 41.6 in Nick Heidfield’s f1 car than 39 in the ID.R. Still an unbelievable car though…

    @DonLee1980 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The thing about a short hill climb, the electric cars really can shed weight by removing batteries, yet maintain the same amount of power, similar to a petrol powered race car going out on a qualifying lap. This is one of the main reasons why this car went so much faster the 2nd year

    • @jessebarrett7968
      @jessebarrett7968 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not how an electric car works. Less battery density means less kilowatts, less kilowatts is less horsepower.

    • @DonLee1980
      @DonLee1980 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jessebarrett7968 lmao. you are assuming that all electric cars are battery limited power. Hate to break it to you, but some are motor limited, and some are purposely limited to control performance, cooling issues and efficiency.
