    Thanks a mill, Brandon! It was all about that goofy shift rod bolt that needs to come all the way out! The rest should be a piece of cake! Kudos to you!!!

    Excellent video, crisp and to the point. Looks like it's not strictly necessary to remove the prop if doing a straight lower unit swap, as I intend to do from an Evinrude with seizing issues to another of the previous model year that had a shot lower unit that had been removed.

    Am currently wrestling with the bolt - not moving. Have tried fluid, heat, leverage, nut on bolt and whacking a length of flat metal onto the nut. No joy yet ...
    Thanks for the video. It is good to see the path ahead. Pity about the choice of materials and the electrolysis / corrosion.
    Great to see the exact same motor from the past. Hoping to get father in law's "tinny" back on the water before he falls off the perch.

      I wrestled with the same problem. The bolt and the hole had almost corroded to a solid unit... However I solved it by stacking nail plates on top of the bolt, and then unscrewing the nut against the plates to push downwards on the bolt. Any pieces of flat iron will probably do but make sure you fit as much material between the bolt and the roof of the hole/shelf where the bolt is, to have more thread. The upper threads might take some damage, but they can be remade easier than the whole lower part if you were to damage it while trying to knock it loose with a hammer. Some extra lube on the bolt and nut might also counteract the deterioration. Hope this helps.

    I just bought what I believe to be a 25 horse 1985 johnson. I manually lift the motor up when pulling into shore. However the motor doesn't stay in the up position. Is it suppose to? How do I keep the motor locked in the up position when either taking it out of the water or trailering it?

  • @F8lastcallcharger345
    @F8lastcallcharger345 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The one I am working on has a bolt instead of a stud and nut, it’s the one you sprayed. I think it is a 1963 18, anyway I think they installed a nut that was large enough in diameter to thread into the midsection and lower unit. It broke off with out coming out any and it is about a 1/4” recessed into the hole. Uuuggghhhh

    after following your steps the motor seems to be highly revved, and it is not the speed throttle, and ideas what can be the issues please? also is it normal that the water pump is too tight that the blades bend when inserted?

    I just bought the same motor with the lower unit in pieces. Can you tell me what orientation the water tube installs? Straight section be on the motor end with the bends on at the pump?

    I have a 1978 25 horse shipmaster, very similar to this ingine, but have a hard time finding parts, what water pump, "part number" am I looking for, because I can't find one that matches mine. I can't find most anything that matches my ingine. Or were can I look to find parts for my ingine?

    Great videos. I need to replace the gasket on the lower portion of the split lower unit on a 1979 25hp Johnson. It's leaking some gear lube. Can I do this without taking apart the entire lower unit? Can I just remove the portion attached to the skeg?

      Probably. Well, yes you can. But doing it with the engine upright will be hard, esp. if the gears come loose.

    I recently purchased the same motor, it needs a impeller and I cannot remove the lower end I did everything you did but that one nut/bolt is siezed badly from neglect and I cannot get it off... any tips? Should I just cut it off? There are 4 other bolts holding it on how detrimental would losing that bolt be?

    Hi Brandon. Great video because I have the same motor on an old jonboat I just got and I need to replace the impeller. Question is what does removing the lower bolt do (of the 2 behind the small plate with a gasket) that you took from the rod that continues up into the motor? Do I still have to remove the shift linkage at the motor end of it? OR does removing the lower bolt allow the linkage to detach at that point instead of having to remove it from the top? Thanks for your help.

    I have this same exact motor and have taken it apart 3 times with the shaft being stuck in the powerhead every time, do you have any idea what could be causing that?

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Worn splines, on the crank or the shaft.
      Ever had a slightly rounded nut get stuck into a socket? Same concept.
      Or you're not putting grease/molly lube on the splines when you reinstall; and rust/corrosion is getting to it.
