Just picked up a 78 15HP Johnson for $350 with stand fuel line and tank. Just ordered new water pump kit, new plugs this video helped me have confidence getting the job done thank you!!!
Check the compression of your motor, I just picked up a 14’ fishing boat with a 77 15 horse Johnson. The guy told me the engine was done. I took it home it had 90 lbs. Dude it fired up, I’m in the same boat you are I’m putting a new water pump and servicing the gear box
Hi ! A neat lttle trick to minimize gear box oil loss upon removing the fill nozzle is to have a blob of vaseline on one of your fingers and plugging the hole. Gives you all the time needed to insert the plug straight with no mess. Also make sure that you install new OEM washers on those plugs. Scoot along and be merry !
Awesome video man. I just bought a boat that came with the 9.9hp I just ordered the kit as well as the idle set screw because it’s snapped off. The old owner said he couldn’t get it to run well, so I replaced the spark plugs and boom she’s a great runner.
Hi came across your channel I find it very interesting and educational love the way you show bits and peaces and how you go about repairing and replacing things thank you for that your new subscriber watching in from Ireland.👍
Hey Mike, I see that the 15 was in the Foreword position as you I’m pretty sure you need to be in foreword to expose the shift linkage attachment. Yes? No? Think it was just as oversight.
You need to be mindful of where the shift level is when you take it apart. It’s easy to get the gears ⚙️ out of time. But with a little tinkering you can get them back in time.
Hi Mike, thanks for a great tutorial. I followed it for my gear oil change, the old stuff came out green and milky, and i noticed improper gaskets on the screws, which I replaced with proper new ones, the prop shaft seals looked good. Doing impeller next, wanted ask where is the water supposed to discharge? There's a nipple on the lower cover where no water comes out, but i have lots coming out the ports on the back of upper shaft, i believe it's the exhaust?
friend I have the same engine johnson 15 year 1978. How do I find the manual? I need a manual for this engine. Thankful if you can help me. God bless you.
Just did exact swap on my 15. I pulled the shaft all the way out which I now know is not Necessary. I put the pump on the shaft and slipped the shaft back down into the gearbox. Now when I rotate the shaft by hand the shaft just rotates and the prop does not rotate. My motor is a peach. A real beauty. No abuse, no hammer mechanics. Any idea what’s up. Hot to get this motor on the back my Alumicraft V14.
I'm am so impressed with your videos. I just bought a boat, motor, and trailer that was a package all made in 1978 at a descent price. There is a problem, I'm having trouble find parts and a manual for part numbers. Do you have any suggestions where I can source some parts? One more question, will going from a 9.5 x 10 prop to a 9.25 x 10 change the performance of my motor much and will it be positive or negative?
The repair manual calls for a sealer or gasket maker to be put on the underside impeller base plate, between the plate and the lower housing. This is the pump suctionside and they want no air leaks. Nothing on the top.
I have this same outboard, changed out the water pump, but when I tried to put it back together, it feels like something is keeping the shaft from going all the way back in…. I did the forward and reverse wiggle to try to get it to fully seat but it stops about a half in short… what am i doing wrong??
Hello, My Rabbi bought a 1961 boat with a '61, Johnson 40 HP motor (RDS-23). The lower unit where the prop is ; it is really loose. How much play should there be in that area? Thanks.
Ok thank you vey much. Can you suggest me an american dealer where I can find parts for '80 Johnson 25, and 97 Johnson 15. Here in Europe to find parts start to become very very difficult. I'm looking for the screw of the gear drive connector of the 15 cv. n. 48 of the technical sheet.
How do I get ahold of you I want to send you a picture of a 1979 johnson 9.9 that has a air chuck connection to it. And everyone I've asked never seen anything like it
You have not missed it. I am shopping for a 14-16' Aluminum john boat with a short shaft transom. Once I find the right one Franky will be on the water. Thank you for watching
Hey Mike - great how to video. I’ve got a 79 25hp Johnson seahorse. I’ve searched the model # and keep seeing 2 different pump housings on Amazon for the same part #. One is the one you’re showing here, the second has a domed top…Any ideas? Model # is 25R79R. I haven’t dropped the lower to verify yet.
Help please at min. 139 you can see where the long part of the motor(exhaust housing I think ) connects to the transom mount and that is where it pivots, when running I get water coming out of the top of it as well as where it is supposed to the little hose I have rebuilt the water pump but i must have done something wrong at reassembly any suggestions ,thanks John
Help. Q: I need a water pump kit for a 1970, 20hp Johnson outboard. Model# 20R-70E serial# J3242862 Can't find one online. Checked several marine stores, Ebay & Amazon. Also carburetor kit. Thanks
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina yep. Still looking for a fuel pump that will work w/ this motor. Also did not see your info for the prop pin and kotter key below or on Ebay. Thanks,
RMD Creations Ha yeah bigger and there's no disconnect for the shift linkage between between the lower unit and upper. It's a pretty big PITA to get in where the linkage disconnects from the power head.
Hi Mike! Love the videos! I am working on this exact outboard. I had a problem where I'm running at 2-3k RPM's and as I increase the throttle from there the RPM ran up real fast, but it would not move the boat any faster. I read somewhere that the prop bushing may be slipping or the gear dog is worn. I went ahead and ordered a new prop because the old one was worn out anyways and its the easier fix. I have also taken off the lower and the water pump grommet was sideways and the one at the top of the shaft was missing. The casing was caked in orange mud too. I have cleaned out the mud and ordered a new water pump kit. Good news is that when I pulled the drain plug there was no water in the lower, just black oil. Question : Once I get her humming I think I want to add an electric start to it. Is it possible and did you do a video of this in the past. THanks, Ted
Complimenti a RMD Creation ,unico punto negativo è che il video non ha fatto vedere il momento in cui si avvita il bullone per fissare l'asta del cambio

It would be a good idea to tell people about the gasket on the drain screws being takin out. Just inspect and tighten.👍
good idea. Thank you for watching

MarineEngine.com for parts and parts diagrams, you may see your rpm's go up a tiny bit and that's about it. thanks for watching
What kind of grease are you using
Can you tell me if you have a blk rubber band at the top of the shaft nobody says exactly where it goes ,I found it laying about mines is a 9.5
Some have them and some don't. Go to marineengine.com and look up your parts.
Exactly when did you put the shift bolt back in the shift linkage. You put the lower unit back on then put the six bolts back in. ?
Right before you close it up.

Sometimes it takes some fiddling around. move the flywheel to make sure the drive spline is lining up

Hi , how can I clean all the salt from the inside the foot? all the part around the water pum area. The motor of your video looks brand new inside.
It would be nice if there is a salt neutralizer out there you could use, other than that it's picking and scrubbing to get it clean.

Getting that lower unit back on can be a real pain in the ass. Do you have any tricks to that??
Is the part number posted anywhere for the water pump kit ? I am looking for that kit.
Here is the link to the kit on Amazon amzn.to/2UnC5Av
Just wondering if u had a part number for this kit?
check out MarineEngine.com for parts. Thanks for watching

Your copper tubing must not be in the right spot.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina Thanks I will check that out do I have to take the exhaust housing off I hope not? I didn't have it off before Many thanks
Is there any particular type of Grease I need to use
marine grease
I will look for a long shaft idont remember if the size of the transom
What type/brand of grease are you using on the prop shaft and on the water pump?
lucas marine lube
Did you use OSB particle board on the interior of the garage shop? Or did it come like that.
There is a 5 parts series on you tube on me finishing the interior myself.
I have a 15hp johnson, my shaft doesn't have the o ring on the top like yours did, nor does it have a slot for it. Is that normal?
Not all had the o ring. If you don’t have the groove you don’t need the o ring
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina thanks so much for replying
If the water pump is damaged it coul get water into lower unit gear oil? Please help
anything is possible. Generally it's just the seals that allow water into the gear box.
I have a 74 25hp Evinrude. Will it be similar to this?
I would be similar
You're missing the two paper gaskets for the plate? Whats going on here?
Guess they have been missing for a while.

Do you ever work on inboard motors?
I have one that I did a bunch of work on and it's on my channel. Mercruiser 120
crap I forgot too put a little 0 ring on the shaft .😢
Other videos show gasket sealant under the plate. Is that necessary?
I haven't used any.
We didn't test the pump
I just put it in the tank to test the pump, thanks for watching
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina was it a stream or a trickle...🤤😒🙄
Those impellers must be the weakest among water pumps there are.they barely push a half inch of water from the housing.
Just put it in the lake , after showing how to put the impeller in backwards.
Same thing on a 70 hp? Same year
it would be similar
