I love my history, love the fact that most of us still believe and keep these customs in our hearts, I personally believe in Nyami Nyami and his power our technology helps but also affected us in a ways that we might forget where we come from, Im proud to be African, we are powerful.
Why are they saying was? It shows an erosion of culture and adoption of foreign beliefs. I wish this is what we learnt in high school and not the foreign beliefs that have been imposed on us. Thanks for this video.
I dropped or alienated the bus at Maputi where there is lot of all kinds of animals even the big five but as we were waiting to be picked up the car arrived to take us to kariba where we crossed to the other side of the Zambezi river into Siyavonga village which had a same meaning with Zulu word for we thank you "Siyabonga" there i met the guy called Sidido who had bleeding gums which was a symbol of tooth problem but had a warm welcoming heart and was so friendly, he was from nearby Tonga and Lozi villages, on the way to notice or realize there is a breakdown car on the road you would see green branch on the side of the road, then you know you are approaching a breakdown car on the road. I enjoyed every part of that adventures journey into Zambia.
I went to a lozi (Rozi) village near the Zambezi basin called siyavonga and meet with Sdido which means Sililo and i am also Sililo or Sello. All villages along the kariba belonged to the Lozis and Tonga people whose main food stuff is mopaneworms, fish and pap and they were well known for farming. Amen.
Nyaminyami is Nyame Nyame the creator of the world. The serpent God and goddess of the Akans. In the ancient we only know Nyame and Nyamewaah ( the male and female deities of the Akans and of the ancient kushites.
Rita Nyame came into my mind when I first saw the word Myaminyami. Akans in Ghana call the almighty God Nyame as you rightly pointed out. I think we may share the same common ancestry with these people. The Zulus for instance have words that are pronounced the same as we the Akans with the same meaning.
Thank you for this. I was born in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia and have always held this story close to my heart but with time have lost some of its meaning. Thank you for reminding me.

It's sad and painful to read comments from fellow Africans trashing the existence of Nyami nyami, given a belief is by choice and one needs to be convinced to believe.. My opinion is let those that believe keep believing and passing on this knowledge, we are the same people that believe in Greek mythical gods, Zeus, poseidon and them all but can't believe something so close to home or even give it a benefit of doubt. We as Africans really to change and be proud of our heritage, roots and culture.

Incomplete assertion, Nyaminyami is important to Zimbabwe as it is to Zambia. The same stories are told in both countries, more research between two countries would have provided a clearer picture.
In South Africa we use nyamenyame word when you see some you haven't seen in a long time or when you are speaking to someone who likes to go away and come back after a long time. " nyamalala" means to disappear in sepedi. Sepedi which is close to the lozwi language

you have no idea how dark it can get. These ancient spirits are what keep us poor, just like the Europeans were just as poor when they worshipped Worden, Thor and the Viking dieties one of which was Jørmangadur The great serpent. You must understand, spirits are not African, European or Chinese...they are spirits. The Chinese had the dragon, the old serpent too, the Indian Hindus had Naga. These ancient superstitions need to be preserved...but only in a library or museum. From Africa(the poorest richest continent on the planet) into the African diaspora on the islands like Cuba, Haiti etc....One thing follows adherences to these dieties. Poverty, fear, witchcraft, backward thinking where natural phenomena is attributed to these dieties there by reinforcing their supposed power. I grew up in a family where we had spirit mediums. These things are a one way ticket to poverty.. Its time to let these ancient things die peacefully. If they were as powerful as they claim, our continent would not have been colonized by children. Cecil John Rhodes was in his late 20s and early 30s when he led the colonial project in central southern africa. We were overrun by kids who were thousands of miles from their own homes and our gods couldn't save us. Now I'm just here wondering if you can handle the truth.
