    Great advise. You make absolute sense. I have an issue however, not with you or the video and advise... it's just that I build my own wheels and, for myself, I enjoy building all the different styles for each style of sim driving I do. and since I'm retired and have an engineering background, I can never be satisfied. When I finish one wheel, I look for improvements I can incorporate into my next project. Talk about project creep....once I have a design finalized and have all the needed parts on hand, the waiting for those parts gave me time to rethink and rethink and by the time the parts arrived, I've reworked the design and either need additional parts, or find better parts available than the ones that just arrives and place another parts order. Dang.. being retired give one almost too much time ;) Anyways, if I was a "normal" sim racer, I would definitely follow your advise, It would give greater satisfaction in the long run experience. The cost for me to build a wheel with all the bells and whistles is about a third to half the cost of a retail equivalent. But if I had to pay myself for all the time, there is no way I could financially afford my addiction. All the off the shelf boutique products are really really nice and most are of great quality, and looking at the pricing, I would call them very fairly priced considering, parts, labor and overhead to produce. They are designed by professionals and have mad skills and talents for incorporating state of the art design with state of the art parts. I love my hobby, but If I didn't have a borderline psychopathic desire for DIY, I would be following in your footsteps and indeed you are very accurate about the practicality of design to the functional use in real time virtual racing. I wouldn't take a Lamborghini or Ferrari to a rally cross. It's not only the steering wheel that needs to be chosen to the form of sim racing one does most, but also the peripherals ... shifters, pedals, seat etc...... Keep up the great vids!

      Man that is some great insight into your world and honestly it is very valid. If I had the technical expertise, I would follow in your shoes. These wheels are so expensive that sometimes I cannot imagine why I have spent so much. I too however was pulled into the hype and got myself a grest wheel with a screen. Sim racing for me had become so impractical and expensive that I cannot believe I've spent so much.
      I too would love to design my own wheel and make what I've always wanted. I know it would save me a ton of money and honestly I'd possibly be much happier in the end. The ease of buying off the shelf is the key. And as I get more expendable income I am sure I will buy more. May even dable in the diy area st some point.
      I hope to be abke to have the setup of my dreams and honestly I know in time I'll get there. Just have to be patient.
      Thanks for rhe feedback and do share some of your designs. I'd love to see the wheels you have created so far. 👍🏾

    fun to see someone who thinks!! lol. Most people go for wheels with screen because they look cooler, but in reality it is more mass to spin around, and a screen in a uncomfy position (for GT rigs).

      Yeah I like to think I'm practical. But unfortunately I have fallen victim to the screen and fancy wheels. I tried out the GSI wheels and was sold. I am such a sicker and have to stop spending money. Lol

    I agree with you, i need to keep my dash the same distance as my screen, wearing nerd glasses, how do you cope with it wearing glasses?
    2nd I keep it as minimalistic as possible as it distract me all to much.

    • @grayzedynamics
      @grayzedynamics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having the dash within view is a great thing and it makes racing so much fun. I have also fallen for the screen in wheel and spent way more than I should have. Lol. My glasses are only for screen protection, I actually don’t need them to see, I just wear them for looks and to block out the light from the screen. More of a proactive approach to my sight. Lol.
      I love the different dash’s but I’ve since seen Dan Suzuki and he made a good point about having the authentic dash’s are cool but your looking for the data you use when using the same dash makes much more sense. So I am using the lovely dash he demonstrated on his last review. I quite like it.

    Completely agree, I think for sim racing in general the screen on the wheel looks cool but it's kinda wasted. I have a Grid Porsche 911 RSR wheel with a screen but I bought it because I like the rest of the wheel, for a screen I use the 10" Grid Porsche dash which is stationary mounted to the wheel base and is actually in line of sight and much more useful!

      @grayzedynamics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. I agree. I just got the Bavarian Simtec wheel based on the Merc and it is great. Screen is amazing but I cannot see it at all. Not very practical but the wheel is amazing. I currently use an old iPhone 6+ as a dash. When I get the new wheelbase, I'll be getting a pretty nice dash.

    Very interesting topic! I'm sitting in a GT position, but I barely have to look down to look at my wheel which. In AC for example I'm driving a lot the LMH cars and F1 cars which both have the dash integrated in the wheel. Also in raceroom I sometimes race cars which have the dash integrated in the wheel and especially in Raceroom I always want to race without having the virtual wheel in the sim. Yes, the hud shows most of the data in Raceroom, but some I always only look at at the dash of the car which isn't possible if it's in the wheel. In AC a only use sidekick as a hud because I like the look of it and that it shows some things very nicely but it doesn't show enough things to drive without having the screen in the wheel in game. So without having used a wheel with screen I think it would be very nice to have it for racing some cars, as I don't have to look down that much and I think it wouldn't bother me having the screen if I'm driving GT cars although I obviously don't need it while driving them. But I have to say after watching your video I'm not as convinced I need a wheel with a screen as I was before. It definitely got me thinking.

    • @grayzedynamics
      @grayzedynamics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah don't get me wrong. They are super nice and I do want one. And I may still get one because I'm an idiot. However it would be more practical to just get a dash for you wheelbase. Get a really nice one that works with Simhub. The virtual dash on screen is cool but I know what you mean. You want something more tactile right in front of you. I would get a nice dash off of Etsy myself. Let me know what you end up getting.

    Enjoyed it Ray. I use a (SimCore) dash mounted directly under my G9 monitor on top of a DD2. Because it is in a constant position I have learned to quick glance at it to look at delta times ect. That said, I've often thought that dash wheels were impractical (but obviously super cool) for the reasons you outlined. Knowing where to quickly glance is made more difficult because the wheel is constantly moving as well. I love the look of the F pro! I'd personally like to get a GSI wheel one of these days but am in no hurry.

    • @grayzedynamics
      @grayzedynamics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Patric. Yeah having the dash in a fixed location is super sweet. Since I am on wheels, I have it mounted above the wheelbase with my new LED STRIP. Yeah the screen on the wheel just is too impractical. I couldn't see it at all and a glance would be looking too far down. So I have sold it to someone who sits in that f1 position. The GSI wheels are sweet. Just so freaking expensive and no thumb encoders. That's the real drawback.

  • @baldmar5083
    @baldmar5083 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sitting in an F1 position in my rig, I always thought having a screen was amazing and essential. Side note, I don’t use a secondary dash/screen other than what’s on my wheel. What I’ve noticed recently, even in an F1 position I’m not using the dash on my wheel. With all the overlays on my monitors, they contain all the information that would be displayed on my wheel. So, I’m even willing to say that a screen/dash is not required on the wheel or in a secondary dash…unless you turn all overlays off for a more genuine feel and purely use the wheel.

    • @grayzedynamics
      @grayzedynamics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gotcha. Yeah the dash's on the wheel become redundant if you use a ton of overlays. That is very true, but we know the wheels look absolutely cool. I think that's why we use. I do use the dash for BB and TC. Abs and a few other things when driving a GT or LMP. You are correct tho, using racelabs makes it easier to just not use the dash nearly as much. My new Rev light is much more useful I've started to see.

  • @vt6020
    @vt6020 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the screens on wheels are cool, if you have a rig where they are useful, like you said. Maybe if someone has a considerable tilt on their wheel in the GT position, this could work. Most sim rigs with the formula-style seating don’t look as comfortable to me as the real life car would be. I’ve never sat in one of those rigs, but they look like they would cause neck strain. I race formula and prototypes sometimes, but I prefer being in a GT position for comfort. Most of my performance improvements have come from ergonomic adjustments, not equipment. For immersion, the screens would be really nice. For me, VR is the best way to feel immersed when you can see a replica of the real dash in front of you.

    • @grayzedynamics
      @grayzedynamics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the screens are super cool. Some of the f1 rigs are comfortable and some are atrocious and just are uncomfortable. I love my gt style rig and no matter how much you tilt the wheelbase it just requires you to look down. And the f1 rigs that sit in that position have you looking up at the screen. So it's a sacrifice. VR is great but I cannot use it for fast motion, I unfortunately get motion sickness. I have heard a really good headset can help and using in small increments can get better but I no longer own one. Want to try again tho. In an actual rig.

    Spot on.....I race in the GT position with the Moza FSR wheel and almost never glance down while racing. I race mainly AMS 2 (which doesn't support the wheel) and ACC. The cool factor ended real quick.😄Time to find a good all around wheel I guess.

    • @grayzedynamics
      @grayzedynamics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. That wheel is awesome but I too realized the novelty ended quick. The GS is sweet and with the QR system, every other wheel is an option too. I’m currently using the cube controls wheel. The 282 mm is a great size for a bunch and has some great features. Depending on price range is always the key factor. I’d get the CS and get a few wheel rims. I have done that too. So many options.

      @@grayzedynamics After spending a good part of today racing I figured out how to make the display work with AMS 2. I’m finding myself looking down more and using the screen. I completely turned off my HUD. It’s really not that different than looking down at your instrument cluster while driving seeing that I’m not moving my head to look down.

    • @grayzedynamics
      @grayzedynamics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. With my seating position I have to look down too far. It's better for me to have a dash on my wheelbase. This way in looking right past it for racing and can make quick adjustments.
