How a mass shooting changed UK gun laws

  • The United Kingdom has some of the strictest gun laws in the world.
In 1996 Thomas Hamilton burst into Dunblane Primary School in Scotland and killed 16 children and a teacher with legally owned handguns. The resulting media outcry resulted in the Firearms Act 1997 which outlawed the private ownership of most handguns within the United Kingdom.
To date, this has been the only school shooting in British history.
The UK currently has only 3.2 million guns, compared to an estimated total of 393.3 million in the US.

"As a result of this ban"
Gun crime has always been low in England. The ban statistically achieved nothing other than sounding good to ioe public.
There are European countries with far more effective laws like Switzerland and Czech Republic. The UK laws are overly strict and extremely complicated.

Switzerland and Czechia have stricter gu laws than the US. And you have no proof that UK’s gun laws don’t work. The fact that the UK has no mass shootings and lower rates of murder and gun-murder is proof that gun control reduces gun violence and violence in general.

Despite the handgun ban imposed under the 1997 Firearms Amendment, research carried out following the implementation of the Act saw a 40 percent increase in the number of gun crime incidents in the UK.
Handgun homicides in England and Wales reached an all-time high in 2000 many years after the ban.
Legally held firearms are and were used in a very small amount of serious gun crime in the UK.
I can't find the statistics but at the time of the ban if I remember correctly, it was less than 1%; I think 0.3%/0.2%. So why remove legally held handguns if they are used in such a small amount of crime?
What did they hope to achieve? A 1% drop in gun crime? Spoilers that did not happen.
Would the ban have stopped Dunblane? No, he was the reason happened not handguns. He would have just used shotguns.
Is the reason the USA has so many mass shootings because they have weaker gun laws? Yes! that's part of it but that's not the major reason, other countries have weaker gun laws they don't see mass shootings at the same rate or anywhere near it. So the major factor in the number of mass shootings has to be something else. That would be the things they really don't want to talk about!

Nope. Any calibre revolver that is MADE from scratch with a barrel longer than 12", and that can be fitted with a 'brace' or grip extension to bring it to 24" overall length is legal on Mainland GB. The only semi-auto handguns we're allowed are .22 rimfire, like the GSG M1911. Similarly, any SINGLE-SHOT handgun that conforms, or can be made to conform - like the 14" barrel Thompson Contender - is legal. Of course, ANY front-loading black powder handgun is legal. However, over in Northern Ireland, ANY handgun is legal.

ALL legal firearms have to be registered in UK. Firstly by the importer, then by the dealer who then 'enters' it onto YOUR Firearms Certificate. Nobody has mentioned non-registration. The only There is no need to have BLACK POWDER handguns fitted with longer barrels and 'braces'. However, they must be 'loose-loading' - that is to say, they are loaded by putting powder into the chamber, or down the barrel for a single-shot style pistol, followed by the ball. Like any muzzleloader, in fact. Remember that NONE of this applies in Northern Ireland, where you can legally own ANY kind of handgun - with a Firearms Certificate, and club membership, of course.

From a statists perspective, though? Well the issue there is that the concept of self defence aids a self-sufficient population. A government that wants power and control can't afford to allow the public to defend themselves, power and force MUST remain with the state or else something horrible could happen, the people could realise we don't need government to do anything other than moderate businesses and guard the borders!

It's too bad that the incompetence of Douglas McMurdo, the (then) Deputy Chief Constable of Central Scotland Police, hasn't appeared to change the slovenly attitude to policing in the UK. Instead thousands of legal shooting sportspeople were made scapegoats in order to appease the tabloids and slow of thinking. Firearm crime due to legally held firearms has never figured highly in statistics. And those rare incidents where it has occured could almost always be traced to poor procedural processing by the police.

As a former gun owner I am glad it is harder to get a gun. Things have changed a lot since the nineties , people aren't the same. There has been mass immigration and different cultures bringing their ideas and weapons. Knife crimes are up in the UK...imagine if those knives were guns! More guns means more criminals with guns and as shown in these mass shootings, it's very easy to say 'but I need a gun for self defence'. That is no good if your gun isn't in your hand at the time you are being shot.
    No guns=nobody getting shot.
Now the argument about knives. Unlss you are a great knife throwing expert walking about with multiple knives, you aren't going to kill as many people as you would with a gun.
The ludicrously stupid 'should we ban cars as well then' argument. Cars are built for people to get from A to B...not with the intention to kill. It's as stupid an argument as sayng hands and feet should be banned as they can kill.

Look up Czech Republic gun laws. That is really the best model for firearms laws.

@Jason Brown Wrong, guns, no matter which ones, were invented with the sole purpose of killing . Then the changing designs are to make the projectile more accurate to kill. In some cases with the idea to end all wars.
Gattling gun for example was hoped by the inventor to take up the job of many soldiers to stop army wars, thereby killing less people...
Hell, even Dynamite was meant to end all wars and that's why there are Nobel Prizes so that Nobel was remember for something other than inventing nytroglicerin.
Going off track here but Oppenheimer regretted his part in inventing the Atomic Bomb.
Look what humans did, made them more deadly so they could kill more people.
Now if you wanted to debate whether guns don't kill, it is the person holding the gun...that's debateable. A gun can't kill without a person (at some stage , someone has had to set up or fired the gun) and in some circumstances ,the person can't kill without the gun.

      @Jason Brown
Where did I say in any part of my original post 'design' or 'designed'? I haven't edited any part of since your first message.
I think you are playing with semantics here.
You can't have a design without an idea and that idea was for the purpose of killing.
"what comes out of the end of the barrel, a bullet, that’s what a gun does and is designed to do. Throw a projectile down range."
Which wouldn't exist if it wasn't invented in the first place for the purpose of to kill.
As you said ,a gun is anything that fires a projectile.
The Chinese invented the gun...a canon...for what reason? To kill.
I edited my answer above probably after I got your reply but before I noticed it.
