  • In episode 7 of our series From Suit To Shoot, Kirby finally makes it to the holy grail of gun makers, James Purdey & Sons. This historic company is a British gunmaker based in London, specializing in high-end bespoke sporting shotguns and rifles. Purdey holds three Royal Warrants of appointment as gun and rifle makers to the British and other European royal families.
There is no one better suited to helping Kirby select the perfect guns for a shoot up in Scotland than Purdey. Luckily, their director of gun sales, Andrew Ambrose, was on hand to walk Kirby through their incredible history dating back to 1814! Then it was time to look at some of their amazing guns.

But I know what you need to do next:
I want to see Kirby explore the world of quality craftsmanship and tradition and go find himself a Bentley, or even better yet, a bespoke refurbished Bristol 410!

Yeah let's market this to the almost extinct boomer class, on outdated platforms they exclusively use, so we can fail to make money back on the project.
The ads on TH-cam are way better financially than TV ads, and extremely less painful to set up comparatively too. The pain comes on the viewer side if you don't pay the $15/month for premium, of which is an absolute steal compared to the $100+/month cable bill, plus the extra packages, then you need to buy the box, then subscribe to a network you like... just for them to release clearly politicized films with enough dramatic pauses to stretch a 30 minute show into 2 hours... or to tune into "news" networks that read the exact same script as one another because that's a sign of true education and not indoctrination.... dare I go on? The platform only exists because it buys votes, stop pretending otherwise.

A British friend had a great influence in my bird hunting proficiency. He introduced me to the 'butt, belly, beak, bang' method that he learned from his grandfather on his estate in N. Ireland in his teen years. I learned to follow the bird and smoothly swing from the rear of the bird and follow its flight and when you swing past the beak you fire continuing the swing which creates a string of shot the bird flies through. Before I was just trying to shoot the head which had me stopping my swing as I fired.

I have a few items from Purdey including the shoes, the filed coat, jodhpurs, tattersall shirts etc. They are extremely durable and the attention to detail is great. One thing about the boots though is that you have to break them in. You really don't want to wear them on a day shooting straight out of the box. I have relatively sensitive feet so it took me a couple months to break them in and they are still stiff due to the Goodyear welting, but they look amazing

Mr Allison, I very much enjoy your videos and are looking forward to seeing you in the highlands with your fantastic Purdeys. Beretta from Italy is a company that also has a great history. They are soon to be 500 years old (founded in 1526) and are still owned by the family.

Very fascinating. I just got into shotguns and trap shooting. He's very knowledgeable about his calibers and even checked to see if a round was chambered before handing it to you. I believe the 16 and 20 gauge are popular in the United States now but everyone who owns a shotgun has a 12. This is my first introduction to Purdey. I would shoot it a lot and put this on display in my home.

12 gauge is still more popular in US. It may be that 20 and 28 are more popular here than in UK. But 12 is still most purchased gauge.

    • @rediius

And Kirby just goes along with it. "And it's more sporting!" No, 12 gauge is a larger size than 20 gauge, with more lead per shot. And 12 ga vastly more popular than 28 ga in the US. I would love a channel that combines high skill shooting and high end tailoring, but until that comes along I'll just have to continue watching them separately.

The amount of history with these firearms is incredible. I can tell that Kirby is not yet comfortable with a gun in his hands.
With that type of artistry and richness of history of these firearms, I would want to feel how it feels shouldered, how the check weld feels, the weight/balance, the smoothness of the mechanism.
But still a beautifully presented and incredibly explained video.

I was thinking... man with the likely low volumes, all done by hand with over 900 man hours these have got to have a hefty price tag. Of course its high but its even higher than I imagined. Prices according to a 2006 article have their bespoke side by sides starting at over 89,000 dollars! The damascus finish shotguns look absolutely incredible.
