I recall a rugby league team in Sydney doing this. The player subbed off almost immediately for five games. He was injured and would be for some time but would be ok by the time the finals took place. He needed a minimum number of offical starts to be allowed to play in the finals as an offical member of the team. Hence the immediate substitution in the minor rounds.

Now they've modified the rules and are still trying to force more playing time for young players.
