I own a 1979 RX-7. I am the original owner. Bought it when I was 30 years old. I gave it to a friend a few years ago and he proceeded to drop a racing rotary engine in it. I ended up buying it back from him and had to spend some more money to get it dyno tuned and transmission overhauled. It now produces 200 hp! It has straight back pipes with no mufflers. I have had to apologize to my neighbors for the sound. My wife refuses to ride in it with me. But oh does it drive nice! I don't know how many people have stopped to look at it and tell me that they once had one!
Jay G. I own a 1979 as well. I bought it in my 20's and am now 40. I own a 90 vert and an 04 rx8. I refuse to sell any of them. Because I never want to regret it. Keep yours, at some point it will always put a smile on your face.
keep this car for the rest of your life, preserve history while also making it, and then give it to a person that will treat it the same. god bless, i wish you a contintuing good future with your 7
Love rotary, bought an rx8 with a new engine 3 years ago and have been used as a daily ever since. A lot easier to maintain than what the Internet wants u to believe.
IRelentless I daily drove mine for almost 7 years without any real issues. I did blow apart the cat at 7500rpm, so... that sucked. If it's got more than 100k mi, be ready for that to need replaced if it hasn't been swapped for an aftermarket midpipe already
IRelentless It'll like it. I, unfortunately, live in one of the handful of counties in my state that actually does yearly emissions testing so that was a no-go for me. It's funny, even the service writers at my local dealer told me they were sorry.
Awesome! I can’t wait for part 2! I owned an ‘81 RX-7, it was a project I got when I was 13, I actually got it running good for awhile & my dad took me for a wild ride in it that I’ll never forget! It broke again before I got my license so I swapped in a Subaru 1.6 boxer engine but at the time I was in way over my head & never figured out the wiring. You brought back like a thousand good memories so thanks!
I love the Mazda RX-7. I bought the ‘82 RX-7 (Gold color, brown interior w/sunroof) after getting out of the Air Force in 1987. I would love to own one again. Thanks for the video.
Thanx for the memories. I had 2 RX-7’s an 81 and a 86 2nd gen. They were fun but not very reliable. I remember I had to have the 2nd car towed to the dealer twice. The dealer said they had to “de-choke” the engine. They both where crap compared to today’s cars. I now own a 2015 Mazda 6 manual and I love it albeit needs more power. Bought the car new and had zero problems. The 6 is the best Mazda yet. Keep up the great work TFL CAR!👍
I really enjoyed this video! Brought back a lot of good memories for me when I drove my 1988 RX-7 for six years! It only had a little over 80,000 miles on it when I traded it in. It was a great car that I had no issues with it other than the A/C had quit on me at the time. I wish I had never gotten rid of it! I would love to still have it today!❤️🥰
Hey, thanks for doing this series. My first car was a red 1985 RX7 GS. Lots of memories driving that car between Philadelphia and Boston ... thru the Bronx by my self at 16. Thanks for all you do TFL.
I had an 85 GSL for a couple yrs in the 90s. It was a lot like this one. I really wish I had that car still. I remember a road trip from KC to PHX one thanksgiving. I hit a huge snow storm from flagstaff for a couple hundred miles. That car was a trooper. It went 100mph downhill w wind. The only issue I ever had was the cruise control stalk didn’t work.
great video, i did an engine back in high school for my friends rx 7, great car . i own a 1985 Monte carlo SS 95% original, baught it from my students parents. great job guys
That brought back some memories! I did the Denver to Los Angles trip via Las Vegas in 1995 in my 1983 Mustang GL. We barley made it up the mountain! Doing 35 mph in 3rd gear was the best my little 4-banger could muster.
Neighbor had a Mazda RX2, 4 door with a Rotary, lil booger would scoot, looked good and was red, she was in her 70’s, I loved when she asked me to take it and fill it up for her, the RX2 was so smooth to drive and compared to my 72 Mustang with a 302 and a whopping 135 horses it felt quick and nimble! Great review guys loved it!
Helpful Travel Hint..............................................Take your jackets off when traveling in cold weather, you can adjust the heat to be comfortable and remove the bulky coat. I have seen people with hoods up while driving, blocking peripheral.. side vision
My dad had an RX-7. It was stolen twice. The second time it was stripped and pushed into a pond. Sad.... I remember playing with the vents and the glass top that slipped into a bag that was stored in the trunk. Thanks for the memories.
Wow... this is an awesome video that made me miss my Rx7. I even used the same Valvoline brand of 2 stroke oil. 10 years ago I had a 2nd gen, Series 5, FC that was my 2nd car during my college days and it was great fun car to drive. It wasn't very fast but it handled like it was on rails! Very, very stable around corners and just like you said, the whole platform keeps wanting to go faster. I can't wait for Part 2
I really enjoyed part 1 and 2. I would greatly enjoy similarly themed excursions, especially in conjunction with an interesting destination as was done in this video. Thanks for the good work.
Thanks I really appreciate that 1983 doo doo brown RX7 GS was my first car in 2004, wanted that car since I was 12 years old that car started a lot of things for me for working on cars and learning Automotive I'm 31 years old right now and I own 93 RX7 now but the first 1gen still is my favorite Rotary car in the future I'll get another one to put in my collection👍👍👍
Had an 81 RX-7 12a rotary. I truly reget selling it. People say they're slow. I disagree, off line they are ok but really shine in high rpm's! You can turn 9000 rpm all day in that rotary. Plus the 50/50 weight ratio. The 2nd gen turbo 2 also a blast.
@@Desertduleler_88 I disagree but we may have different experiences 👍 I've turned 9k easily in my 83 12a. It is almost stock besides an exhaust and air cleaner. It is still running like new. The key is to let it warm up properly and not hold it at 9k. Many fools just keep it at redline bouncing off the limiter for seconds at a time. But if you just shift properly, you will be fine.
I’ve owned 8 of them. The 12a was by far a more reliable engine than the 13b. We got to knowing you have to pull the fuse for the fuel injectors before you kill it in the 13b so they wouldn’t leak all night. Everyone thought they had blown their seals but it’s those damn injectors. Fresh injectors brought 4 of them back to life. It’s a shame no shops know how to change the apex seals. It is a tedious job. The cars handle really well. They drift fabulously! 50-50 weight ratio. I would say I miss 90degree corners at 55 but my typeR does it. Beautiful throwback. The only car I know that injects antifreeze into the combustion chamber. The second one we owned was a 12a. I remember one morning, after working the night shift, I came out and started it. It was a freezing cold morn here in 719. Got in, pulled the choke and that thing smoked like it was on fire. Haha there were firemen there just staring at me. Oh so embarrassing 😆
Twist A piece of paper into A twisted pencil shape and secure it to the inside of the intake before the air filter. This will pull coolant into the engine constantly while you drive. It is A small amount of coolant but it will keep the engine clean of carbon when it turns to steam. You can put your hand in the exhaust stream to feel the humidity before you do this, after driving for about half an hour. There should be dry air coming out of the exhaust at that point. After you do the trick the exhaust will become humid. You might get slightly better MPGs in stock form but with the right modifications this trick will be more noticeable. Use environmentally friendly coolant as it will constantly be needing to be topped off. This is just in the testing phase so use this knowledge at your own risk. Make sure you have A backup vehicle if you try this. Also you can put Spiralmaxes in the exhaust tips and they help the exhaust system flow better. Two per tip is what I recommend. You should spot weld the outer one and the inner one will rest against the outer Spiralmax. You can use A 2 liter soda bottle to learn about vortex flow. First take the bottle and fill it up with water to about 2/3rds full and mark the level with A permanent marker. With the cap off and your hand over the opening flip it upsidedown and have someone time how long it takes to drain out. Next fill the bottle again to the same level. Turn it upsidedown with your hand on the hole. Get the water spinning in one direction then remove your hand. The water coming out should create A vortex if you did it right. It also should come out at A faster rate. You should get an average time of both ways by repeating the process 3-5 times each.
I bought a gsl-se for $1k when I was 20, died a little inside when I sold it. I did buy an 84 gsl in good condition lately and I have a fc drive train for it, that will be my midlife crisis car. I love these cars so much.
I had an RX3. It was a little powerhouse. It would go really fast. The 2nd gear was the power gear. In the middle of the night, I was doing 65, and jammed the accelerator down the floor, and reached 130 miles per hour really quick. I only left it there for a few seconds, because the front end felt like it was getting squirrely. A lot of fun car.
Damn the memories. That was my first car. Cost $3,500 and put roughly 150K on it. Still to this date the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. I know that’s not the norm.
The second button (black unlabeled squares around the screen) from the top on the right is a MUTE button for the annoying commercials at the pump. Another thing we 'didn't have' in the 80s (thankfully!) *{noticed that you had your hand over the speaker}
A cool car from the 80's. Not very powerful, some issues because of the Rotary engine. A carburated engine, an analog radio/cassette player, it can't be more 80's than that. Cool!! The 1st gen RX-7 is not my favorite, but I would like to have one, make it the weekend car. Sadly in my country rotary engines are hard to fix. Some people replace them with piston engines. But first you have to find an RX-7, they are almost extint here. Great vídeo. Greetings from El Salvador!
I worked for a firm where the Managing partner, who had a net worth of 30 million, drove an 85 RX7 as his daily driver. The parking level he parked on was the usual German Auto Show you would expect executives to drive except for one car, his RX7
I had three vehicles in a row that got 27 imp. mpg.MGB and LandCruiser BJ60. I prefer the tractor motors. Mine went to a racing hobbyist. I saw it later in a car show with it's number and roll bars.
They are 2-stroke (need oil in the gas) and they wear out fast. Mazda uses an oil injection system. so you have to fill the gas and fill the oil. I want one so bad right now! Bad thing not family car and my wife can't drive a stick very well but then it be mine all mine to drive. Someday maybe I have one!
These days the LA traffic starts as soon as you leave Vegas. There should be improvements on that freeway, but the state is mismanaged in my humble opinion.
As a former car salesman I can tell you I warmed these cars up well before potential buyers came through as they were oil burning pigs when traded in. Nobody wanted to pay for seal rebuild.
You put in 8 gallons of oil with a tbsp. Of 2 stroke? Should've been about 4 ounces, or more. I premix nearly 1 oz. To the gallon even with a working Omp.
They would if they could pass emissions but they already had a hard time passing EURO4 with the RX-8 (and making it unreliable because of insufficient oil lubrication). We are now on EURO6 and it's going to take a lot of clever engineering to get a rotary to pass that. Maybe with good microcoatings it will be possible

Wow. What a graet trip in that nostalgic car. Congratulations to both and thanks a lot for making this video.
Great video. I owned three RX-7s in the late 80s and 90s. Wonderful memories.
A great trip and video. Thank you guys. It seems you enjoyed it very much.

Fun video! I've owned 3 of these. A new 81 GSL, a new 82 GSL, and a used 81 around 1993.
That's the exact same tape deck I have in my 86 Mazda pick-up - it still works, too!
A rotor and piston are the same. Both perform combustion, one is going around and the other up and down or sideways. Sweet piece of history.
I had a 79 in high school loved that little thing
83 RX-7 GSL past owner checking in.....Loved that car.... Makes me want to find one . I jumped on Autotrader and not many options currently.

WATCH ROTARY HEMI BREAKTHROUGH
Mine was the 1983 Limited Edition!
I like road trip vlogs. :) FWIW, looks like dirty oil when you checked the stick. Why not due an LOF before the trip?

what songs were used in this video?
Such cool cars.
Guys you should do road trips often
Why do all the car shows never bother getting the GSL-SE models when they get FB's? They are superior in just about every way.
My first car was as old as was a 1976 Chevy Impala.
Going back to Cali.
Love it.
Would be cool if you guys did a rebuild on it and restore it
There’s nothing to rebuild or restore. The car is prestine and everything works like it just came out of the factory.
At 15:40 that intro made me think of Wii sports resort lmao
lmao, I was thinking the same thing
I want to buy it !

As a former car salesman I can tell you I warmed these cars up well before potential buyers came through as they were oil burning pigs when traded in. Nobody wanted to pay for seal rebuild.
you guys should premix when refueling
Exactly! Put that oil in BEFORE, not AFTER the fill so it mixes/agitates with the incoming fuel!
You put in 8 gallons of oil with a tbsp. Of 2 stroke? Should've been about 4 ounces, or more. I premix nearly 1 oz. To the gallon even with a working Omp.
I wonder what the Rx7 rotary engine would do if you deleted all the emission control crap?
Roman you might want to correct the spelling of Los Angeles in your video when you display it on the screen....
Keep it.
So I should put oil in the gas tank of my Toyota Tacoma??? Thanks for the info guys!!
Jk :P
Another purchase? WTF? These guys spend faster than a drunken sailor.
Hopefully you get/got a chance to drift it before you let it go.
I’m sorry but Mazda needs to bring back the Rx7 or at least a rotary engines back to their lineup.
Didn't Roman sell the car already?
It's 3:00 A.M. where I'm watching this
