I'm the same age as Merse and my addiction ran pretty much parallel with him. reading Tony Adams book Addicted had a big affect on me and I stopped Drinking aged 38 but while I was in the rehab I said nothing about the drugs or gambling. I didn't drink again until I was 48 but aged 40 started taking gear (smack) I used to gamble to try and win money to get gear but never came out on top. Like Merse I wasn't into casino gambling, it was horses, dogs, and got into betting on cricket in a big way, I remember sitting in a cafe watching 2 flies trying to get out, there was a window open at the top with a small gap, I sat with 3 mates putting money on which fly would get out first, sitting there for over an hour watching the flies. I've beaten drink ,coke pretty much every substance I've ever used but I cant beat smack and I cant beat gambling. Now having accepted that I've given up giving up I have a certain amount of peace with that. In a perfect world id be clean but I'm not so applaud anyone who has beaten living in the madness. It was a good listen James and you Paul...Just to finish I went to watch Pompey when Merse was there, it was the only time I watched him live but what a player you were!! .

I've read Paul's book "Hooked". What a brilliant read and I'm not a massive book buyer but I had to get this because I'm an addict like Paul. What I like about Paul is you learn something of him every interview. When he said " I never felt right in my own skin and felt itchy or kept moving in my sleep" I thought wow...that's exactly what I get. Paul in a wonderful human being... From a Recovering addict
An interesting insight into Paul Merson's character, his first thought in regard to regretting wasting money was the fact that he could have bought gifted that cash to someone else. This indicates a very kind heart indeed.
absolute legend, always loved merse at villa, i'm going through the exact same thing as he was now, amazing to hear someone like him has gone through it aswell
This interview was amazing. I just love how quick and articulate Paul is with his answers. There is no filter with this guy, it's all laid bare. A great talker.
I went to a talk night with Merse a few years back and such a genuine guy, lots of funny and compelling stories from him and have a lot of respect for the man and footballer
Got to be one of the most genuine and refreshing ones you have done yet That could have been two lads in the boozer, maybe the coffee shop, discussing their shit with each other. I think the clearest example of how your own experience James can relate to the guest with zero risk of appearing patronising or arrogant, the way some knobs have slandered you. What a guy and his honesty specifically the "what has he got to be depressed about , he's loaded" Money means fuck all. He's seen the top and bottom at the same time! Think this has got to be your best result in terms of guest, but more than that, I think the strongest most genuine message and the number of views is not the proof.. You'll have a higher percentage of viewers taking the positive from this . Quality not quantity! Mers, still a legend! There's a fucking motivation/help/support video/presentation/quotes from clips of this podcast. Thank you
Spurs fan here. But since Merse got into football analysis on tv, couldn’t respect the guy more. Completely honest and a very likeable guy. Wish him all the best.
Can relate so much to this story (without the cups!!) Im a recovering gambling addict and the way you and Merse present yourselves here is very helpful for someone like me. I hear that Kev. But it was only a few months ago he was crying on Harry's Hero's. He shouldn't be on pod casts talking of beating addictions until he has.
Merson was a great talented player in his day. Thing I like about him is he’s upfront and honest about his problems. End of the day everyone has their ups and downs in life doesn’t make you a bad person.
James laughs about his podcast and I say this strongly he is the British joe rogan and what a pleasure it is to listen weekly brother massive respect from what you was to now big respect from a farther of 4 x

As an Arsenal fan I'm very much looking forward to this one
🙌🏼
As a Chelsea fan I am so looking forward to this, Mers is a legend , even as a Gooner, happy Christmas
💪
Good watch this one.The only time a gambler/addict wins is when they stop playing 💯
Merse is the best pundit on British TV. Straight-talking, genuine, down to Earth. Arsenal legend!
From a
Recovering addict
Bookmarking this podcast I think I’ll be rewatching this a lot.
An interesting insight into Paul Merson's character, his first thought in regard to regretting wasting money was the fact that he could have bought gifted that cash to someone else. This indicates a very kind heart indeed.
Great signing James thanks for telling your story Paul
Great podcast. Paul’s so honest, I wish him well, thanks James. Have a great festive season, and all the best for 2022.
absolute legend, always loved merse at villa, i'm going through the exact same thing as he was now, amazing to hear someone like him has gone through it aswell
I love his honesty never tried to blame anyone or anything
Looking forward to this one! Merson is a class act 👍
This interview was amazing. I just love how quick and articulate Paul is with his answers. There is no filter with this guy, it's all laid bare. A great talker.
👍🏼
I went to a talk night with Merse a few years back and such a genuine guy, lots of funny and compelling stories from him and have a lot of respect for the man and footballer
Got to be one of the most genuine and refreshing ones you have done yet
That could have been two lads in the boozer, maybe the coffee shop, discussing their shit with each other. I think the clearest example of how your own experience James can relate to the guest with zero risk of appearing patronising or arrogant, the way some knobs have slandered you.
What a guy and his honesty specifically the "what has he got to be depressed about , he's loaded"
Money means fuck all.
Thank you
Quite agree mate
Boss interview this James. Always rated Merson as a footballer he was unbelievable this podcast shows what kind of man he is. Belter 👍
Spurs fan here. But since Merse got into football analysis on tv, couldn’t respect the guy more. Completely honest and a very likeable guy. Wish him all the best.
Very powerful and positive - I hope he gets to speak to younger players and addicts, he will surely save some from that terror.
Can relate so much to this story (without the cups!!) Im a recovering gambling addict and the way you and Merse present yourselves here is very helpful for someone like me. I watch all of James' material, but this stands out from the rest. Fair play to you both for opening up on this vile disease. Respect!!
Fairplay to Paul, he was a top player and he is trying to help others now. all the best to him.
Not been to a meeting for a year or so and needed to hear this. Thanks Paul.
Outstanding interview this really touching. Great Job James, what a player Paul was in his prime sad that he had such troubles behind closed doors
I'm only half way through this interview and my heart is hurting for you, what a man, please stay strong brother
Anyone watching this should take note of merse because hes been threw a lot but has the courage to tell everyone hope he has a long wonderful life ahead of him
What a top guy, love hearing of successes and people showing the demon of addiction can by overcame day by day.
As much as I admire Merse. And I'm an Arsenal fan. He hasn't beat his addictions....YET!
@@user-yn7ye3tu7f hence the reason I wrote day by day and understand through my own experiences no addiction can be fully beaten .
This is a great guest to have james. Some cracking stories coming up for sure 👍🏻
Look man. I hate england and arsenal but this podcast hits home. Guy chats the Truth. Good podcast James.
James laughs about his podcast and I say this strongly he is the British joe rogan and what a pleasure it is to listen weekly brother massive respect from what you was to now big respect from a farther of 4 x
This will be a good one his book is amazing glad to see he is on the way back up. Amazing story . Keep up the good work James
My name is Paul and I gambling addict but I want to speak to Paul merson cause I was and I am the same and this podcast hit me where its truth
Opening his soul, sad but a great interview from Paul, honesty from you both, respect Gent's.
Thanks
Love this james. I’m Arsenal through and through and we love Merson. Love hearing his story as sad as it is love hearing about him
I’m Spurs through and through but Merse was a brilliant footballer, and much respect for how he deals with his difficult situation. Wish him continued good health
Great down to earth honest interview, there are not many people who would put it all out there like Paul. Great interview, thank you.
Really enjoyed this interview, so interesting, loved every second of it. Wishing you the very best Paul x
Im a compulsive gambler going into rehab on monday! Its called sporting chance merce and adams set the charity up! Nervous but excited! Watched this for abit motivation. Wish me luck
I'm not even an Arsenal fan but Merse was immense. One of the few players I'd pay to watch. He's also a brilliant summariser on Sky Sports.
I just hope he knows how good he was. Mindblowing.
