Came straight back to this after to watch the rest. What a gent this guy is. I’m a Utd fan so I already loved him, but he seriously is a top top bloke. Great interview.
Is it mad that as a dyed in the wool Liverpool fan (YNWA), I’ve developed a bit of a mancrush on Gary Neville??? What an engaging, personable, witty, intelligent and down to earth honest bloke he is. An absolute delight to watch and listen to, I could do it all day. And when he plays down his ability on the pitch, I think he’s doing himself a massive disservice, one of THE BEST players (nevermind in his position) that’s ever played the game, he must’ve been to have been at Manchester United for 25 years AND been first choice for club and country. Imagine starting at one of the biggest clubs in the world at 11 and then it gets serious at 14 the immense pressure that comes with that. Much respect to the work ethic that Gary has and how he manages his health through all this.
I m a Man United fan for more than 30 years. I really liked Gary as a player with a great attitude and etic when he was playing for the club. For 2, or 3 years now I also really like him with great principles, mentality, and intelligence as a person and as a top consultant. Well done for all that you have done most of your life for this club on and out the pitch Mister Gary Neville. Happy New Year 2023 to everyone and to all Manchester United fans and the whole team.
Gary talking about his Dad broke my heart. A utd legend forged by an incredible family. I'm raising a drink to Neville this evening. You helped raise a wonderful footballer, and player who played a massive part in the best years of my life as a young man and now an advocate for change and positivity in every sense. Gary, i'd absolutely love to grow up to Gary Neville x
he's honest about his biased opinion of Ronaldo at least. but come on, he thinks Ronaldo is better than Messi, you can't trust that judgement. Messi's 7 Ballon d'Ors prove he's better. Ronaldo only has 5 and he isn't getting any more, it's over.
90’s Man U was the best so so happy for a footballer to go on and do so well after the beautiful! So nice to hear how much he appreciates his parents and family. Top G.O.A.T❤
Yeah he has such great awareness when he is complaining about football teams spending money and sacking managers whilst pumping millions into Salford and sacking managers every couple of months 🤡
What he said about his dad and his kids hits hard for me. It never escapes me that my dad was there for me but will not be for my kids. He loved his grandchildren and they miss him massively, hard to deal with.
Started watching from the angle of being a Man Utd fan. However, this is probably the best leadership conversation I've ever heard. I've heard a lot of BS in 30 years of working . These two of them are A+.
There is not one single dislike for this interview which makes me unbelievably happy!! My respect and admiration for Gary Neville has grown so much more after watching this. What a great interview.
One of the best interviews I’ve ever seen. Gary is so candid in every subject they touched on. So honest, smart and full of feeling. Absolutely engaging.
Gary Neville is really smart he won’t let the arrogance in and he’s remained Hubble and passionate I have honestly enjoyed this I can relate to everything spoken about the guy is amazing
Cried numerous times because the way he spoke about his family it sounded like he was describing mine and my relationship with my mum & dad. Honestly speechless after that, what an episode 👏 Thanks for everything U do in Manchester my home town Great guy gary 👊🏻
I am 2-3 years older than Gary, but he was one of my hero on the United team among the Cantonas and the Keanes and the Ronaldos. He’s a proof that passion, determination and hard work can overcome any lack of talent. I am happy he is successful now and I believe he will continue to be successful in the future. ❤
Honestly know little about football, I am a rugby fan. That being said I really enjoyed this interview. I think Gary Neville gets a tough ride in the press. He comes across as a genuine, decent man who is trying to make a difference, yet very humble.
One of the best interviews I've ever listened to online. Over the last 10 years I have listened to literally hundreds podcasts and interviews from around the world, as well as many multi-hour audio books. The honesty and raw vulnerability is captivating. I believe, I really do, that Gary will be the Man Utd manager when their next 'flight of the phoenix' era happens. All his experiences and life lessons are shaping his destiny for that role. That's from a Hammer of over 55 years supporting who also stood on the terraces at Old Trafford when they whooped the Irons 7 - 1 in 1999. The only points I got that day were 3 for speeding up the M1. Amazing work from both guys with very little post-editing too I would imagine from the flow of the conversation...
Gary Neville deserves a lot of credit! And thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly to make this podcast a reality. This was nothing less than fantastic.
I’m an Arsenal fan but I agree totally with the Liverpool fans’ tributes to Gary on here. I remember well our team rivalries, the good days and bad days we all had and still have at each other’s expense . A top footballer, top pundit, top man and I love the values he has . I don’t always agree with his opinion but do more often than not. So, big respect to him for what he’s done and the way he conducts himself. In a world where many people don’t enjoy the work they do and struggle to thrive in working environments that don’t always chime with their own values, people like Gary are needed to show what is possible when you apply yourself and can find your niche.
Great to hear how much passion and love he has for Manchester and the fact he invests so much into the city. I see so many famous folk f off to London or the US but Gary genuinely cares about his home town and its amazing to see 👏👏👏
I am mad on Glasgow Rangers, I know as a fan how much pressure and stress I feel at times, actually got to the stage I had to stop and pull myself away from it as I was so passionate about football,so imagine being a young man and having that on a daily under fergie must have been all consuming, but the beautiful thing that struck me about Gary and his family is they are so down to earth and I didn’t see any of the usual footballers up there own butt and extremely arrogant and most have done nothing like Neville has.good dude.
Gary was a GREAT defender, with a great mentality, and great ability to read the game. Any top team would have him, ANYONE. Yes, it's true that nobody grows up dreaming of being Gary Neville, but once a player hits the first team, and start playing in defence, you can bet he has a whole lot to learn (end even more to win) before having any rights to even be compared to a great player like Gary.
I’m a Liverpool supporter & Gary is one of the best , his football ethic , punditry & he’s so funny especially on the overlap . A credit to his parents and the love he has for them is so special xx
I'm a Leeds utd life/ long supporter but the respect I have for Gary neville ( especially after viewing this interview /video ) far out ways the natural rivalry between our 2 teams ! What a shame for Man Utd he is not The C.E.O/Owner of the Club like wise Shame on my own Club that at Leeds we don't have A living Legend of the Club as a C.E.O./Owner of the Club ! No disrespect to the current owners/C.E.O's of each Club but they will never have the Passion/Desire for success for their Clubs guys like Gary Neville utd or Eddie Gray Leeds have !!!!
Nah I cannot believe after all these years I m still amazed at Sir Alex's genius. I thought I d heard it all but the indirect sort of drill into the psyche of someone to make them contrast their own situation to a family member who went to literal war back and back again is.. i m speechless. If he told me to run straight into a wall i would. Honestly. There need to be psychology Phds for decades to come on this man. PS: Watched this on Feb 6 2023 and look at where United are now. Gary Neville is a genius Icon. What a good bloke. Sir Alex and Roy Keano shaped Gary to who he is today alongside his familia. Elon Musk must love him! Smart ol dude Gary. Captivating
Fair play to you for allowing Gary to properly be himself again, you can hear and see it it in how comfortable and calm he is in his voice and body language. I’d gone off him with some of his punditry on mine and his club United. His conflicting business ventures & politics. Its seemed like he’s been loving the media limelight and pandering for views/retweets and seemingly lost touch from where he come from (which is also practically where I am from). But the setting you created allowed him to drop all the bullshit and just open up; really in touch with who he actually is behind the person he presents on Sky and social media. Loved this and he’s regained a lot of respect in my eye. “Gary Neville is a red…❤️❤️”
When you consider all the negative publicity many professional athletes make the news for, the Nevilles are really a credit to their parents and their upbringing. All stand up, down to earth people who have achieved success in their own right and continue with that some mentality even after retiring as players.
What a great interview. It couldn’t have ended any better, as he’d mentioned so many individuals that had influence his life. As I listened to the interview I thought that he didn’t mention his Mum in the same way. Then Stephen asked that final question and the love and respect for his Mum just flowed out with the openness of that answer. An answer that showed a genuine honesty and vulnerability in acknowledging that he didn’t always show appreciation to his Mum that he wished he had. Also a big pat on the back for Stephen for listening to Gary’s replies and being able to bring out a side of him that many would never have seen before. Insightful and empathetic, yet still able to push Gary to really think about what made him tick and what were his core values that subconsciously sit under the surface, and make him the man he is today. The interview should be played to all young kids with aspirations to do anything in life and not just for Gary’s insight, but also from Stephens perspective too. One of the greatest things we can do is life, that can really help us to grow, Is the ability to listen, and then ask the right question. Which potentially enables us to take a quantum leap to a brighter future if we’ve thought wisely. Gentleman, I take my hat off to you, because you’re both outstanding individuals.
Anybody trying to motivate a team should show them this video. Gary is a smart, humble, passionate guy who's refreshingly honest. You don't need to be a football fan to get something from this interview.
He couldn't motivate his Valencia team could he? And before you say he didn't speak Spanish, there's Plenty of managers that can't speak the language yet they do well in management 😅
@@steven9169 so you're saying if he was the ultimate master in motivation he would succeed as a manager of a big club?... THATS ALL WE NEED LADS, MOTIVATION AND WE WIN!!! Ain't that simple fella. Gary Neville is an inspiring and very likable man. For me he is the best football analyst out there. You can never tire listening to his duo with Carragher. From an Arsenal fan.
As a city fan i agree that city will never be as big as united. United earned their way organically where as city's success wouldn't have occurred without the financial takeover & any city fan that disagrees are delusional & i felt Neville's pain during him speaking about His father. You can tell Gary's a sweet soul
I agree but also disagree. I agree in the sense that United's history is bigger than any short-term success City are having, but I disagree in that if City build a solid foundation for continued success for 10, 20, 30 years, then nothing prevents them from gaining that history and status just like United have. But it will take time, for sure.
@@lucioledizerot196 its not a doubt about it mate they have money and they will win trophies but the bare status of united the history and the way united were born and bred and the foundation that was set in this club from the day that they were founded up untill now they will NEVER have no matter how many years or how much money they invest they will NEVER have the history and respect united have due to very simple reasons
Gary Neville is a class act. I can’t believe I’ve just said that. But even as a die hard Liverpool fan it has to be said. I never knew about his humble background and about how it’s shaped his character and career. The way he talks about his dad is so moving. Beautiful in fact. I related a lot personally about what he said. I also admire how he uses his voice to express concerns about the mess our country is in right now. His position on workers rights and fairness in the work place is admirable and right. I wish more people of influence were like that rather than hiding behind there money and position. As a Man United ex player/fan he still has the honesty to give a rival club like Liverpool, credit where credit is due. As a player he was top class yet humble. No one plays for a team as good as United under a legend like Ferguson if you haven’t got the mettle for it. Brilliant all or nothing player. His commentary is always balanced and he and Carragher are Gold together. Fantastic interview. Mersey Christmas!! 🙏❤️.x
Brilliant interview. And a brilliant interviewer able to ask insightful questions and then letting the interviewee speak at length. Gary's comments on leadership are interesting in that that he liked being told what to do by "the boss". That's exactly what Eddie Jones says in his autobiography on how the England rugby players he coaches respond best to instruction and that, in his experience, is a very English value. Eddie says nowhere else does anyone call the boss "the boss".
Massive Liverpool fan but GNev is a behemoth. Total honesty, humility and a man of the people prepared to speak out for what’s right. Totally uncompromised in a seedy United Kingdom littered with bankrupted souls His work in the community is mega. Great podcast. Big love
Better to be a human being than a human doing. Gary alludes to knowing this but can't change. I really like him (and I'm a Liverpool fan) and I wish he would slow down a bit. Football and sport needs more people like this and I don't want him to burn out.
I really enjoyed this. The part that I picked up on which really bore relevance was ‘presence’. Meditation is now a necessity in this life as we achieve, consume, amass ....at the end of the day we can ‘cram everything in’ but I hope Gary realizes that no one will think any less of him if he stood back and bit and spent time just practicing ‘presence’ more. That’s ‘being’ not ‘doing’ all the time. Thank you.
Gary’s story of Wendy getting the charity balls signed is a brilliant example of thinking (or not thinking) about others. Great opportunity for self reflection.
i've really enjoyed getting to know Gary the past couple years by listening to him by watching the telly. Gary Neville is a very underrated Footballer. Thank You for sharing this interview with us all.
Can’t wait till Gary’s 50 ?, great interview. Very honest from both parts. I don’t vote Labour or have Gary’s views on politics, but I like him. So for a right back nearly off the pitch, he’s done alright. But I’d like to say he has nothing to prove, and sitting back isn’t a failure, it’s recharging the mind & soul. Enjoy the quiet lodge, if not in body but in mind.
I have nothing but respect for Gary. His relationship with his mum and dad hit me hard. But what hit me harder was when he said " they're just good people who put out for their family. And i don't do that." It made me seriously think about where my guilts lie
I have seen quite a few of Diary of a CEO and i am not into football whatsoever, BUT Gary Neville i have to say that this has to be one of my favourite podcasts with Stephen.. watching this gave me goosebumps, i was teary eyed in some parts especially the 'parents' bit... I was glued .... total respect for this guy and how he has come along way ... TOTAL RESPECT TO A LEGEND' THANK YOU. Stephen Bartlett you are a master class of interviewing 🙌🙌🙌💪
Brilliant podcast. As a football player I find that Gary Neville is often underrated, especially by the younger generation. Neville was an elite right back, the best the premiership has ever seen. As a pundit, he is absolutely superb. Could listen to him all day
I've been a dedicated fan for 66 years - Busby babes / come back with Denis Law ( The King and my favourite ), Bobby Charlton ( World cup winner ) and Georgie Best ( who inspired the first European cup ) then famine for 26 years / enter Eric Cantona - SirAlex and then gluttony for the next 20 years / famine again...until Erik Ten Hag ! I am as convinced that Erik will bring us back as I was by Alex Ferguson's appointment back in 1986...background very similar ( Sir Alex success with Aberdeen and Erik with Ajax ) Just watch from now on. Ten Hag is EXACTLY what we NEED NOW ! This CR7 thing is not going to deter him in the slightest.
I literally watch and share with one or more persons, every episode of DOA. This episode, which I watched immediately after Piers Morgan's interview with Christiano Ronaldo, this episode of DOA with Garry Neville, had me in tears. I appreciate his vulnerability, and honestly and he's just so damn likable. Please do not go into politics. It will ruin you. ❤ you SB for creating DOA.
Awesome interview. I have finally understood the key to the success of Fergie United after watching this interview. Thank you, Gary Neville. A deep respect for the culture and the code of conduct - hard work, giving everything, showing up and caring for each other - and we are all equal in the club.
I’m a Liverpool fan of 52 years but Gary Neville even though our arch rival is a great football mind and business man , everything he says makes total sense , very honest and unbiased, very interesting to listen to him , he needs to try management again I’m sure he’ll do well ,

Gary Neville is a credit to Manchester United. Hard working and personable, he will continue to be a success. He mentioned his position as right back being a low level position, but he made this position great by his work ethic. I will say this however, in regards to his opinion of Manchester United's facilities, in that its not what would improve success at this stage. There is a term used in business coaching called "Kaizen", and is something I use in my own business coaching, which emphasises that good to great comes about by a cumulative process. Essentially, continuous improvement - doing the small things right every time. It's clear that Manchester United's team miss an influential leader on the pitch, but I believe that if they were to 100% utilise their current resources, they would begin to see positive change. Investing money at this stage in the infrastructure would be a waste. Look at Iceland beating England in the 2016 Euros! They did not have state of art training facilities. However, bringing in an influential Manager and on the pitch leader would be a more sound investment, as well as a business coach who is not affiliated with the club, and who has experience in incremental transformation. So often clubs throw money at short-term fixes, hoping for long-term results. It rarely works.
Good kids great parents well done mr and mrs Neville as a football parent it’s hard with work and football 4 times a week but there’s nothing more than watching your kids give it there all it’s my life now and I can’t wait for weekends 😊😊
Gary may not have had the natural talent of some of his incredible team mates but he gave everything on the pitch for the club. That's all we want from a United player. 100%. Legend. Great interview.
Not a Utd fan but respect Neville and his IQ of the game. He is the best pundit on Sky Sports as a Arsenal fan alway enjoyed the rivalry between Arsenal and Utd during the during the Golden era.
I am not a United fan so was never a great fan of Neville as player, although respected him as a guy who made the absolute most of the talent he had and was a pain in the arse to play against. The more I see and hear from him now as a man, that respect grows with almost every interview. Seems a genuine and honest guy. Also, sounds like a great boss to work for - got any jobs going Gary 😂
I came into this because I'm a United fan, I left with a piece of mind and understanding as a professional. I'm in my early 30s, I work relentlessly and I always believed I was doing it to help establish our young family. In the end though, I think part of the drive we have is that pull to want better. I also think it is the subconscious nervous energy that we don't want to fail. Not to fail our wife and kids, our family all of that. Since listening to this I have made a conscious effort to establish a better work life balance. I keep separate phones and once I'm done work phone is left by the computer and kind builds that wall of ok work is left here. We have to live in the moment and appreciate your loved ones while we have them. Don't miss the little moments, especially with kids because we can't hit rewind. So I came to this wanting to hear some interesting bit about United, I left with a piece of mind with how I can be better.
I have always liked Gary and his honesty always comes accross and his passion for greater Manchester and his out look is very intresting to listen too.
Great interview. Gary really needs to be brought into the boardroom at Man U. He's passionate about the club, understands what brings success, is business minded, he seems to have everything that is needed to be there
No he doesn’t! Are you crazy? Neville wanted Ole to keep the job, Neville would not put United above his mate, and that is all you need to know about this man’s integrity
Amazing podcast and especially watching this in January 5th. 2023 when so many things changes. We just came back from world cup brake winning 5 in a row and lose only one in 14 games. Ten Hag sack Ronaldo and he finishing his career not in big club but in Saudi Arabia after disrespecting club in that interview. Now we have Casemiro and Varane plus Licha world cup winner in the changing room, Ten Hag bringing back our old culture back and best of all Glazers are selling the club.
Gary’s a legend in the true sense of the word. Yes, I’m a Utd fan, but I don’t care. Tony Adam’s is a legend as well, and so is Gerard. True legends are there for all to see.
Fair play you both! Very well spoken and a very open and honest question and answer session. Gary, i followed you as a supporter and you may attribute your mental toughness to your family and the old guard of united. But do you know what? Your openness and willingness to talk openly about mental health is inspiring to so many people that need to hear… it is human to feel good and bad. Can you two do more collaboration work?
It's the Northerner in him that makes him so relatable. Grew up disliking him because I don't support Utd but have to say he's a brilliant person who has humility and honesty that a lot of pundits sadly don't. Far more watchable than Carragher

You helped raise a wonderful footballer, and player who played a massive part in the best years of my life as a young man and now an advocate for change and positivity in every sense. Gary, i'd absolutely love to grow up to Gary Neville x

Amazing honestly teared up
what a legend Gary is, seems like such a kind genuine person
Shouldn’t you be in the kitchen Gaz conjuring up more wonderful recipes rather than watching this?? Peace out!!

What a sellout Gary is
he's honest about his biased opinion of Ronaldo at least. but come on, he thinks Ronaldo is better than Messi, you can't trust that judgement.
Top G.O.A.T❤
gary’s best attribute imo is his self awareness and honesty with himself. always a pleasure to listen to him talk
You are right. Being aware of your strengths and weaknesses is so powerful.
Absolutely spot on. Completely aware of his failings which is an admirable trait
Yeah he has such great awareness when he is complaining about football teams spending money and sacking managers whilst pumping millions into Salford and sacking managers every couple of months 🤡
As a Liverpool fan and socialist, I have a lot of respect for Gary. Honest and intelligent insights.
@@julietill2499 I didn’t know socialists own hotels and football clubs. Seems pretty capitalist to me 🤡
What he said about his dad and his kids hits hard for me.
Gary Neville is a class act. Very engaging, personable chap. Love his punditry. I imagine his team are very happy to work with him.

There is not one single dislike for this interview which makes me unbelievably happy!! My respect and admiration for Gary Neville has grown so much more after watching this. What a great interview.
I would love working for such a Man like him. He is so realistic, humble and knows how people function
@gary Neville
Your English is immaculate.
You express words effortlessly.
I'm envious.
Just like listening to you.
Keep it going Nev.
Honestly speechless after that, what an episode 👏
Thanks for everything U do in Manchester my home town
Great guy gary 👊🏻
The only points you got were up the m1
Hahahahha
Gary Neville deserves a lot of credit! And thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly to make this podcast a reality. This was nothing less than fantastic.
Stunned by how much I like this guy and his morals. I'm a liverpool fan so it's almost criminal liking Gary Neville, but he's a great man
He’s another one hypocritically taking Arab money for his punditry. He loves the drama.
Just like the Queen has selling our country to the Arabs …
Pays his staff minimum wage on zero contracts… it’s all for profit, not for Manchester or anything else
@@jcjackson4626 thats BS
YOU H A V E to bring Ten Hag to the Pod PLEASE. He s a literal genius!

This interview is just perfect.
It's Dragons' Den's Steven Bartlett with an interview with The Overlap's host Gary Neville.
“Gary Neville is a red…❤️❤️”
him mentioning parents really touched me,, parents will do everything in their power just to keep their family safe
we need to treat our parents with utmost kindness and respect ,,they are the cause of our existence
You could be the best motivated person in the world and it would mean fuck all as a football manager without the other feathers in the cap...
@@davidg5305 try reading the original comment before replying to me 😂 the original comment stated if any team needs motivated then show them this video, and I stated he didn't motivate his valencia team 🤣 on a other note he was a piss poor manager yet he's always shouting about this manager should do this and this manager should do that, when he doesn't have a clue himself 😁
You can tell Gary's a sweet soul
great take, respect
Totally uncompromised in a seedy United Kingdom littered with bankrupted souls
His work in the community is mega.
When an interview feels like a conversation, it is a really good interview, this is brilliant
Cried, smiled and nodded in awe through all of this and will now make my 13yr old footballing boy watch this- just brilliant
Seriously don’t understand why some people dislike Gary Neville
Could listen to him all day
Never has podcast impacted my way of thinking and behaving with in my day to day life.

I want to hate Gary being a LFC fan but can't help but like the guy. Just a genuine guy who wears his heart on his sleeve. We are lucky to have him.

Loved this interview. Hated Gary as a player (being a Liverpool supporter) but what a humble and down to earth man he appears to be 😊
Everything is left out there on the pitch! That's why you reflected what every young viewer wanted to experience in the game. RESPECT
Not a Utd fan but respect Neville and his IQ of the game. He is the best pundit on Sky Sports as a Arsenal fan alway enjoyed the rivalry between Arsenal and Utd during the during the Golden era.
He's a dishonest pundit....alot of United fans don't listen to his views anymore.
