I just took out an Isles with the 20mm this weekend, it's fairly effective if used correctly. I came at them from the stern after they'd passed above (and I'd sunk the Flowers with my last eel), surfaced and hurried my officer to the gun. Loaded HE to rake the deck, drilled their side with a magazine of AP when they turned to engage, and finished them off with more HE. Their little main cannon got a few rounds off toward me; only one struck the conning tower, though. She sunk pretty fast after I'd unloaded on her, and I scurried off to continue escorting troop ships to Norway. (The accompanying destroyer was crippled by an Isles shortly after leaving Wilmshaven and left dead in the water, the useless thing, and I had been left to escort them alone the rest of the way)

The 20 mm deck weapon of type II subs is not a machine gun, it is a cannon, and hits like a truck against light warships. With HE ammunition put on fire merchants not too hard too. Some people claims that is overpowered.
Overpowered in the early game maybe. Later on with armed merchants and grouped vessels it'll be much less useful for that and relegated to AA duties, and nearly useless in that front once Allied air superiority and radar comes around.

The shipboard hydrophone would not be able to detect a Uboat that far. Warships make a lot of noise and the Uboat is comparatively pretty silent even with the diesels operating.
The 20mm antiair gun on the type II does a ridiculous amount of damage to cargo ships I sank about 5 and only used half of the available ammo, felt cheesy but great way to quickly grind to a type VII, unfortunately now in my campaign most cargo ships have small deck guns so surface combat is nearly impossible unless its a lone ship
A few info comparing 20mm and 88 mm ( below based on quick internet search = may get better info with more time :- ) 20 mm is rated to go through 20mm steel plate , a cargo may have 10 to 15 cm steal plate Surface of hole(pi() R^2 ): 88mm deck gives 61 cm2 hole and 20 mm gun 3.14 cm2=> so need 19 round of 20mm to have the same entry hole size as a 88mm deck gun ...Shooting at close range(as in video) on ~water line with 20mm should be very effective Note 100 round of 20mm gives 314 cm2 =3.14 m2 = 1 m diameter --- pretty big hole already with 100 round ...
The devs added an option to disable the stabilization for periscopes and stuff. You need to start a new game to disable it, but the motion sickness coming with it, really adds to the immersion.
No periscope stability makes the game frustrating. I tried with no stabilization and got fed up with the constant motions where you cant make any sort of calculations until the ships are on top of you because the scopes just kept going all over the place and all you do is constant fighting to try and keep it still which is IMPOSSIBLE. I now use partial stabilization because I want it to be enjoyable even thought I want to keep immersion at 100% where you still have to track everything without knowing where they are, but the scopes jumping around just aint fun to play with. Even the officers scope stabilization skill is useless where it states that it stabilizes manual scopes but it doesnt.
This location would not be the best, and I know the crew of a Type IIb is small, BUT ... would taking the ship as a prize, placing a prize crew aboard, and getting it into German controlled waters be valid and helpful? All that food certainly wouldn't go to waste anywhere.
A possible thought for you Wolfpack, have you thought about titling these U-Boat vids the same as your SH3 & 4playthroughs? in a separate playlist & Patrol 1 Ep 1 for example. TH-cam is a sucker when I watch the latest and then the next video it plays was from 2years ago or something. I absolutely suck at these kinda games personally, but watching you play makes it look effortless. Some food for thought :) Looking forward to this playthrough.
Yo Wolfpack. It’s been a little while but can you revisit cold waters with the Soviet Union. either than that I absolutely love the content with U-Boat and look forward to U-137 future successes.
Many people here still disagree with that including Wolfpack, but I personally see that there is more potential even though I agree there are unrealistic things in this game which need to be tuned properly. The game is made with Unity and if we compare apples to apples, yes SH3 GWX Gold and OneAlex are more realistic than the current Uboat. But SH3 vanilla now is pretty mid let's face it. Uboat vanilla is a lot better as a base game. Now we need the same level of modding for Uboat and it could surpass GWX no problem while running very stable. The potential is there, it will depend on the modding community but to some, Silent Hunter is Silent Hunter and it's the best subsim ever, and will not come over to Uboat to make the latter the best subsim ever.
20mm machine gun is "a bit overpowered" in this game 😅 Need to be balanced which I guess will be taken care of in future patches/mods. thanks for another exciting episode! @Wolfpack345 edit: just applied patch 2024.1 patch 11 which, amongst other things, reduce 20mm gun efficacy
@@galliman123 Spoilers? You can since you can unlock the Tier 4 coning tower for VIIC and unlock the VIIC/41 with a blueprint which comes by default with this coning tower which consists of a couple 2 cm guns, then a quadruple 2 cm gun but sadly it's basically the very same 2 cm guns into one weapon so it doesn't feel that great (mostly because of the sound effect) but it's also a lot better you can take down a flight of 8 aircrafts attacking you no problem as I experienced recently.
10:45
But they're not 'merchant ships', Wolfie - They're...
*Snaps fingers dramatically*
'WORKING ships', sugar!
💋💅💃
I'm not going to lie, the water in this game is so realistic.
A few info comparing 20mm and 88 mm ( below based on quick internet search = may get better info with more time :- )
20 mm is rated to go through 20mm steel plate , a cargo may have 10 to 15 cm steal plate
Surface of hole(pi() R^2 ): 88mm deck gives 61 cm2 hole and 20 mm gun 3.14 cm2=> so need 19 round of 20mm to have the same entry hole size as a 88mm deck gun ...Shooting at close range(as in video) on ~water line with 20mm should be very effective
Note 100 round of 20mm gives 314 cm2 =3.14 m2 = 1 m diameter --- pretty big hole already with 100 round ...
3,14m^2 = 2 m diameter.
But!!! 314 cm^2 is just 0,0314 m^2.
;-)
There seem to be a lot more warships patrolling around the UK, even with the type VIIB I'm having trouble finding any merchant ships in the early war
oh dang, hot off the press :o always love seeing submarine videos, though xD
That was a very gentlemanly episode. 😄
Am I the only one that heard ORE-ships instead of Warships? Glad he said it twice :'D
What method are you using to find the course of the enemy ship over time? Really enjoying your videos. :)
NEW WOLFPACK VID LETS GOOOOOO
Bro ur on fire with uploading.
I fucking love it!
Could we get some longer episodes please? Or even some double episodes? 😊
I believe a professional crew would have at the time dived to identify the propellers and confirm they are warships instead of trying to get closer.
Love the vids great work on this and love this game wish it came to console
Kinda sad the negotiations have to end like that when the ship's captain welcomed you respectfully even as a foe
i love these vids thank you
Addicted to these vids
Haha you sounded like Bea is and butthead at 12:55 😂😂😂😂 class man
This location would not be the best, and I know the crew of a Type IIb is small, BUT ... would taking the ship as a prize, placing a prize crew aboard, and getting it into German controlled waters be valid and helpful? All that food certainly wouldn't go to waste anywhere.
Those crewman should have painted the eels yellow so they blow up better.
Love the vids. Great work.
MORE U-BOAT! WOOOOOO!
If the devs continue to work on the game , I can see 'U-Boat' eventually surpassing 'Silent Hunter III'.
Quite the bummer for the Portuguese crew.
@Wolfpack345 Have you ever been to the U-505 exhibit in Chicago?
A possible thought for you Wolfpack, have you thought about titling these U-Boat vids the same as your SH3 & 4playthroughs? in a separate playlist & Patrol 1 Ep 1 for example. TH-cam is a sucker when I watch the latest and then the next video it plays was from 2years ago or something. I absolutely suck at these kinda games personally, but watching you play makes it look effortless. Some food for thought :) Looking forward to this playthrough.
Yo Wolfpack. It’s been a little while but can you revisit cold waters with the Soviet Union. either than that I absolutely love the content with U-Boat and look forward to U-137 future successes.
hey there cool stuff, is there any mods you recommend for the game ? like do you have a video about it
I have to admit. U-Boat is giving Silent Hunter a run for their money in game quality and in depth details. Turning into a decent sub sim.
The potential is there, it will depend on the modding community but to some, Silent Hunter is Silent Hunter and it's the best subsim ever, and will not come over to Uboat to make the latter the best subsim ever.
uboat is great
20mm machine gun is "a bit overpowered" in this game 😅 Need to be balanced which I guess will be taken care of in future patches/mods. thanks for another exciting episode! @Wolfpack345 edit: just applied patch 2024.1 patch 11 which, amongst other things, reduce 20mm gun efficacy
Tutorial series soon?
That 20mm is a dual purpose gun now 😂😂
I wish we could upgrade it to more barrels 😂 zwilling and vierling!
A bit overpowered, just a bit.
Dang I didn't realize the size difference in those two subs lol
AHH! So they can be ' flushed !' with success! Eh? Hmm! Sorry Wolfpack! I'm replete with a sense of humour!
I'm betting the crew id DEAD INSIDE that boot
well I was wrong lol
