How to Make Bushcraft Acorn Flour Bread Biscuits / Day 28 Of 30 Day Survival Challenge Texas

  • Chris foraged us some acorns a few days earlier and after several boils to remove the tannins and make them palatableI, I had an idea. I wanted to make a corn flour so we could make pancakes. At least that's how I presented it to Chris in the morning when he woke up. It takes a lot of work to grind down the acorns into flour. I managed to find two rocks that would help me do that, basically creating a mortar and pestle. In the end I was only able to grind it just so fine. The acorn flour was not as sticky as regular flour so they made biscuits of a sort. So join me on yet another adventure and I'll show you how to make acorn flour bread biscuits. This is one bushcraft survival trick you're not going to want to miss. I failed to say this in the video, but white oak acorns are the best for this. Other acorns require many boils to remove the tannins and remove the bitter taste. If they're too bitter, they could give you a little belly ache.

When I saw you struggling with the acorns, it reminded me of the acorn processing method used by Ray Mears, and Dr. Gordon Hillman over in England.
You may know that Ray is a great practitioner and teacher of Bushcraft methodologies and techniques, who has been featured in many videos about the outdoors.
Gordon is actually a Paleo Ethno Botanist who specialized in studying how ancient people, and civilizations used wild food to survive.
Together Ray and Gordon were featured on the BBC's Wild Food series some time ago.
I am including a link to a video which shows them using the acorn processing and cooking technique and methodology.
The first part starts at about 3:36, and the cooking part starts at around 18:30.
The finished acorn product that they produced looked very appetizing, and did not take a huge amount of time and effort.
By the way, the entire video is great, as well as the series, as Ray and Gordon also discuss, collect, and process many other wild foods, that were used by our ancestors that are beneficial.
    Very interesting and educational!

First time commenting. For the past two weeks, I have been binge watching your 30DSC. Until, yesterday, I assumed that I could finish the 'season.' I was pleasantly surprised that I had caught up and new episodes were still to come. I waiting anxiously for last night's release. Your editing and TV presence is great. I also love that you openly display your faith, too.
I found you by searching for air rifle hunting videos. What impresses me most is your ingenuity and craftsmanship. Until you mentioned it, I did not put it together that you were the S3 Alone winner. My wife and I were blown away by your clever contraptions. Thank you for the entertainment and education.

I always used to get asked by my vegetarian student housemates to get them a veggie burger each from the kebab shop on the way home from the pub but I never had the heart to tell them that they were cooked in the same fryer as the pork sausages and burgers were cooked but that was 30 years ago now lol but backwards nut roasts cooked in raccoon fat does sound a bit wrong maybe but did make me chuckle remembering student days . Also my wife used to use meat stock in her ex'es vegetarian dishes whoops .
I only found your channel a couple of days ago and have crammed Texas in 2 days and totally loving it keep up the good work I'm looking foreword to plenty more entertaining watching .

For the acorn flour pancakes how about reduce down some of those orange lemon fruits to make a marmalade. Hook the minnow through the eyes so it will simulate swimming when you reel it in. For your mortal and pestle, I'd boil both rocks and when they cool grind on them for a while without the acorns to further smooth them out and remove any rock dust that might get into your food.

Late to the party, but been watching these, and wondered why more mesquite beans, or sap, weren't eaten. Guess they weren't in season? Having grown up in deep South Texas, I can say, mesquite beans are a sweet snack, and can be used to make tortillas. The sap is edible, and good for a quick sugar pick me up. The tender part of a Johnson grass stock is good, too. So, salads were all around, in a way.

Ok, just saw a recipe for paleo nut bread...so maybe chop up pecans and stuff them (pack) into the acorn flour real tight while wet & set on the side of the fire to bake slow...and next time you have agave, just take the insides and cook it down & filter 2-3x to make syrup. Pour that over the “bread” just as it finishes cooking. That should help it hold together, release better from the pot & preserve it a bit.

Ilex paraguariensis, Ilex guayusa, Ilex kaushue, Ilex vomitoria. These species of holly are on the short list of species of anything that naturally contain caffeine. Ilex vomitoria is found from mid Texas east to Florida. Toasted dark brown, acorn coffee with a handful of holly leaves would probably be a fair alternative to coffee or tea. My variation I have used Yerba Mate mixed with pea coffee to give a fair substitute of coffee.

Where do you keep your fishing license? How about your drivers license, to get to the survival spot...

God forbid you have an accident and die out in the boonies. Depending on how long it takes for someone to find you, your id might be the only way to identify the body.

If you steam acorns, there are less tannins which make them bitter (versus the standard copious rinsing method).
