That trek was AMAZING! I am so glad you were able to get medical help! I was pretty damn nervous when this was happening to you! You are my tough girl! 😘❤️🥰 Adam, thank you so much for being there and supporting Kathryn! I know not finishing the trek as planned was a real bummer for you both! 🥰
So glad you soght medical treatment right away! Cellulitis is nothing to mess around with - it can be fatal. Very wise decision. Hope the rest of your journey in Peru goes well. As always, beautifully documented. Look forward to seeing your time at Machu Picchu. Have fun and be safe!
You are so brave, that is really high altitude! It takes time to get use to it. A and K you are so sweet and supportive of each other. God bless you both.
Well done for knowing when to bow out and seek treatment. As a fellow FOMO gal, I have pushed myself far too often and ended up with longer term issues. It's so hard to stop when you're in the middle of an experience you might never repeat, but you saved the rest of your trip. Another great vid, and super helpful to me as I'm going to Peru in the spring - you guys always seem to be a few months ahead of me on my planned trips, which makes my planning so much better! Also, welcome to the club of people who cry about overwhelmingly awesome nature experiences 😊
It was a very tough call to make in the moment, but I think we made the right decision. Who knows what that infection could have developed into! That's awesome to hear about your upcoming trip to Peru. We are currently pumping out our Peru content on our website. We're a little over half way through it and we'll have over 20 posts when they're all done. Hoping to be done by the end of the year! adventuresofaplusk.com/peru/
As a peruvian living in Lima feel a bit ashamed that you have seen all of that and i havent. Been to Macchu Picchu a couple of times and always is a blast but took the train both times (is cheaper for us locals). Also good call on going to the dr. Cellulitis is no joke. Antibiotics is a must in that case and in a hasty time too. I must say that a few minutes before the news of the infection i noticed your exposed calves (very nice btw) and thought it peculiar and somehow risky but i thought i was exageraring. Eager wo watch your glorious ascension to the incan sanctuary! Take care and enjoy!
It sometimes seems like no matter how much we plan, life changes everything in a second. I am so glad you took a taxi and got yourself cared for. It was still an epic hike - I would have cried too at the beauty of it all. And really- what’s 12 km when you’ve done so much! I hope your next hike goes off without any drama!!
That was absolutely fantastic! At first! So sorry you needed to seek medical attention but you gotta do what you gotta do! You both are such troopers! I enjoyed all those hostels; they looked nicer than I thought they’d be.
Kathryn is such a tough cookie and as what Adam said she is always positive....in the video she didn't complain at all and she just hike normal...so proud of her... wishing her and Adam have a safe trip !!!❤
So glad you are okay! Our oldest had it when he was about 10. I had no idea it could escalate so quickly! He spent a few days in the hospital doing the IV antibiotics. I'm so glad they worked with you and you could continue your trip! Hope you are continuing to heal and that you have no more bumps in the road on this trip!
Yes it was very scary to research it and see what it can escalate to! We're glad we were able to get help quickly! We can say there were no more bumps on our Peruvian road!
Another beautiful display of your adventure together!❤ hope you recover quickly A! I truly hate that happened to you. Thank you for capturing this experience so we can see this planet we live on. You are inspirational🥹
I've never heard them called land mines-- we always called them road apples. What an adventure. Get well soon.!! A little luv'n from Kona should be part of the therapy. 👍👍
So glad you got medical attention! It was a glitch but you guys still managed to keep it positive and bring us this amazing video! The scenery is mind blowing. Looking forward to all that is going to be coming up♥️
You guys are so inspiring. I love all your videos, but this Peru series makes me want to go myself! You guys always provide so much travel information that planning a trip like this seems simple. Really appreciate all the work you put into this. I know it is a lot!
Thank you for your itineraries we continue to use them on all our trip. Next one Channel Islands. Taking all your recommended gear and following your exact route. Thank you again.
That's awesome to hear! Channel Islands is awesome! We hope y'all have a great time. We have lots of content on our website as well that may be helpful adventuresofaplusk.com/california/
God bless you both for taking care of each other. You are in my prayers. Thank you for showing the honest stuff that could be a set back, but not really a set back for you two. Carry on!
Once again, incredible scenery, you guys are a team and support each other.I so admire you move on in difficult situations. Hope K is mending well ..May the rest of the trek be safe...
Amazing !! Always enjoy watching all your videos. The scenery was spectular!! You two are so lucky to experience all these adventures🥰 looking forward to the next one😁
the last day of this trek is the toughest. I also wasn’t 100% finishing it but i knew i had to power thru since machu was the reward! 😅😅😅😅😅 this brought back alllll the memories from my trek in 2019 :)
I did this trek in 2021 but with a guided small group. It's the hardest thing I've physically done. Got altitude sickness at camp the 1st day and had to miss the beautiful lake trek from camp. My guides talked me into using a horse to get to the pass the next day because I still wasn't feeling great that morning and as they said- no shame with the horse. So glad I listened because as soon as we starting losing altitude I was fine. I say this to you guys- no shame with needing to take care of your physical health! The day you missed was a very grueling uphill hike to an Inka ruin that overlooks Machu Pichu and then straight down. I felt alot of pride that day because I had missed the hardest parts of the 1st and second day with the lake hike and hike to the pass. I ended up taking the train in the end as a shortcut bc my feet were blistering and my toes hurt more than anything. I switched between chacos and hiking boots the whole time to rest my feet but with all the downhill on this trek, I still ended up losing a toenail. It was tough for me even with skirting part of it with the horse to the pass and train at the end. I think I ended up hiking 37 of the 45 miles in 4 days (roughly). I'd love to go back someday with my husband- we met a few months after my trip. Peru is magical and I love seeing my experience through your yours.
It's a very challenging hike! Altitude sickness is NOT fun! The night before the day we skipped it rained very hard so climbing up that steep trail would have been very tough and potentially dangerous. So it's not bad that we missed that section in those conditions. We're glad we were able to get medical help quickly and it healed fast! Great job on hiking most of the trek! It is quite an accomplishment! Thanks and thanks for watching!
Absolutely love your channel. My wife and I our retired and love to travel. We travel across America and look for the out of the way sights. Hope some day to catch up with you and share a moment or two.
That leftover floppy pizza would have been a no for me but what a hike! The scenery is stunning and knowing that there's a culture living in the high altitude mountains for millennia makes it even better.
I know it's not easy to really show the scale and grandeur of these places in pictures and video, but you guys did an awesome job! The lake and waterfall especially -- WOW. Stunning. Also, I bought some Bowl & Kettle meals to eat on a recent trip to Big Bend NP, and they were delicious. Thanks for the recommendation! And glad to hear that Katherine is feeling better after that ordeal.
Thank you so much, Naomi! Glad to hear you enjoyed Bowl & Kettle! They're meals are our favorite backpacking meals by miles. She's all good now. It healed up very quickly thankfully!
Benadryl and Antibioitc cream-always good to have! In addition to pill Benadryl, you can get Benadryl gel-this us great! Even better if you use it in conjunction with Gold Bond anti-itch cream.
Bless you Kathryn for this. I was in Colombia over the summer and had exactly the same thing happen. Bug bite in Salento, and by the time we got to Jardin - our next stop, it was infected and like you, painful to walk on. Your medical centre looked a lot less scary than the place I ended up, and despite also having cellulitis, was given a couple of injections and a prescription for lots of medication from the pharmacy, but wasn't asked to return the following day. Later in our trip we did a 3 day self guided hike through Tayrona National Park and then a 4 day guided hike to the Lost City and was so thankful it had happened before either of these multi day hikes... so knowing this happened to you on what I deem to be Peru's equivalent - I REALLY feel for you!! I was worried you may have lost your slot to visit Machu Picchu, but pleased to hear at the end of the video this wasn't the case. The doctor who diagnosed me thought it was likely a combination of sun screen and dust I'd kicked up from the hiking trails that caused the infection... so after that, I had my hiking socks pulled up to the fullest, despite looking silly. I couldn't bear trousers in the tropical heat once we made it up to the Caribbean coast. All of that aside, once I saw you guys were in Peru, I knew you'd end up doing one of the hikes to Machu Picchu and wondered which it was going to be. My money had been on the Salkantay as it's arguably the prettiest and cheaper than the Inca, but the downside is its a day longer. Knowing you weren't short on time for annual leave, I thought Salkantay, but you caught me off guard doing it self guided!!! This has been really helpful as Peru is certainly on our bucket list - had ummed and aahed over going to Peru or Ecuador next... Ecuador has pipped it to the post, but I'll be using this for reference, plus you blogs when we do make it!
Sorry to hear you got cellulitis as well! We hadn't heard of it before this trip. Funny enough, a girl that we met along the trek got cellulitis earlier this year in Colombia as well. She waited much longer to tend to it and had to spend several days recovering in hospital. We definitely learned a lesson on this trek. Sounds like you did some epic treks! Tayrona looks amazing! Going to bookmark that one. The Salkantay was totally doable without a guide if you have some backpacking experience. Ecuador sounds awesome as well. Definitely let us know what you get up to there as it's on our list as well!
A huge thank you for sharing this video of your epic adventure. I'll never be able to do it myself but, nonetheless, I feel that I have shared the experience and been able to see those spectacular mountain views, even if only through a computer screen. I am in awe of the effort that you put in and your level of fitness. I feel tired watching those sequences where you are hiking away from the camera on a steep hill, knowing that you will have had to backtrack, take down the camera and then walk up the steep hill again. I appreciated your LMNT review. I wish that I had seen it before I set off up Gros Morne (Newfoundland) a few years ago and got into seriousl trouble with muscle cramps from electrolyte imbalance. I am looking forward to viewing your Macchu Pichu adventure.
Loved the video and all the info! Thank you. I hope the cellulitis resolved quickly! By the way, what brands of hooded shirts are you wearing during your trek? Thanks!
I am an old man and wish I would have taken on more adventures when I was young. You both give me hope that our planet will be able to navigate the future and focus on what is really important in this life.
Beautiful! That looks more doable than I would have thought (though as I am usually a solo traveler, I would probably either need to find a friend to go with me, or get a guide anyway). Since you posted this I imagine you are feeling totally better, I hope that's true! Cellulitis is no joke!
Yes thankfully it cleared up quickly and Kathryn is all recovered now! The Salkantay is definitely doable without a guide. We met lots of solo travelers along the way. It was funny because some of them that we met stayed at the same accommodations as us every night and we'd see them along the trail every day so it was almost like our own unofficial group. We wrote a guide to doing the trail without a guide that might be helpful: adventuresofaplusk.com/machu-picchu-salkantay-trek-without-guide/
I adore that both of you love hiking but Adam's hiking walk is a child being forced up a hill. I'm sure it's just to insure a solid hiking stance ❤😂 love it
Awesome, awesome, awesome. Even with all the great scenery, the coffee farm was a highlight as well. Hopefully Kathryn has long since healed up. Probably a good idea to pack a generic wide spectrum antibiotic when traveling in remote areas for those rare instances where something happens in the backcountry.
Nice and instructive video! My boyfriend and I are in Peru right now and would like to do the Saltankay by ourselves too. And thanks for the pizza idea 🤯😄
Awesome! We have a guide on our website that goes into a lot more detail about doing it without a guide adventuresofaplusk.com/machu-picchu-salkantay-trek-without-guide/ It’s totally doable with a little planning! Hope that helps!
Good job powering through, Katherine! Excellent footage! Were you using a fluid head tripod? Some of those pan shots were so smooth but in real time that it seems like you must have. If not, you're much more stable when panning than we are! 👏
Spectacular views! Sorry to hear about the doctor visit, but definitely warranted. Curious to know how you guys do with altitude sickness? I’ve found my reaction to it has varied from location to location - sometimes feeling like I have a bad head cold and other times experiencing just a little dizziness. Any tips on acclimating, if it’s even an issue for you?
Good decision regarding not trekking the whole way to Agua Calientes. I'm sure your body appreciated the break. I'm glad that they had medical care available for you. It's always scary to have medical need in a foreign country.
I'd never heard of cellulitis until I got it almost 3 years ago at the age of 69. It's pretty aggressive. It took two different antibiotics to knock it out. It's not a surprise you needed IV Antibiotics.
@@AdventuresofAplusK Yes, it is a scary infection. If left untreated it can cause several deadly conditions. Same here ---the second anti-biotic did the job. Stay safe.
We planned a few days to take it easy in Cusco. In Cusco we just walked around a lot. Also, drinking coca leaf tea helps. You should be adjusted and good to go after a few days
We have trekking poles, but just don't really like them or have felt the need for them. Also, they kind of get in the way when filming. Just another thing to have to hold on to
A & K, ...those 3D carvings you mentioned. ...Those are called a "Bas relief" ...pronounced "Bah" relief. (I only know thanks to HP Lovecraft's spooky stories where characters find ancient bas reliefs, aluding to dark ancient mysteries.) Cheers.
Hey guys love watching your channel. I'm 57 years old so not eligible for medicare yet. I'm curious, what do you do for health insurance. I want to travel like you but would't have health insurance if I quit my job. Any advice?
Health care is quite a pain in the butt for us. We have one of the healthcare.gov options and it's very expensive and very bad. We're lucky that we're healthy and can do with the cheapest plan which is still about $700 per month. That comes with a very high deductible and doesn't even completely cover "preventative" services. On top of that, it only works in Texas (our legal residence). So it's useless most of the year for us, unless we fly back. I don't know your work situation, but if you can do your job remotely, maybe try to transition it to that. Or if you do quit, you can still have health insurance, but be ready to go back to your home state for appointments. So maybe go on short trips or fly back when needed. I'm not sure if that's very helpful. If you have any other questions feel free to email us and we'll help how we can!
GREETINGS, I RECOMMEND YOU VISIT THE CITY OF ICA, WHICH IS 5 HOURS FROM LIMA...IN ICA THERE IS THE "HUACACHINA", IT IS AN "OASIS" IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT.....NEARBY THERE ARE "THE NAZCA LINES" WHICH CAN ONLY BE SEEN FROM THE SKY...AND IN THE SEA IS PARACAS, WHERE THERE ARE PENGUINS AND SEA LIONS...GOOD LUCK

We're glad we could share the adventure! We definitely notice the benefits of LMNT. That climb up Gros Morne is a grinder!
Wow!! Amazing scenery and commentary. So sorry it didn't go exactly as planned, but an amazing journey nonetheless!!
Thanks and thanks for watching!
Awesome, well done 👏🏻
Glad you are okay.
Beautiful place
After my stroke, I too got emotional when seeing my states Grand canyon. Maybe it was great to be alive?
Spectacular!
We're thankful and lucky we get to do what we do! Thank you
so brave love you both ty
Awesome video! Curious about how these hostels get their supplies at these altitude! Cheers
Can’t wait to go!
I'm sure it's just to insure a solid hiking stance ❤😂 love it
I think it's a combo of being tired and the steepness 😅
Awesome, awesome, awesome. Even with all the great scenery, the coffee farm was a highlight as well. Hopefully Kathryn has long since healed up. Probably a good idea to pack a generic wide spectrum antibiotic when traveling in remote areas for those rare instances where something happens in the backcountry.
We definitely learned our lesson. Thanks!
thanks A+K
Nice and instructive video! My boyfriend and I are in Peru right now and would like to do the Saltankay by ourselves too.
And thanks for the pizza idea 🤯😄
Awesome! We have a guide on our website that goes into a lot more detail about doing it without a guide
adventuresofaplusk.com/machu-picchu-salkantay-trek-without-guide/
It’s totally doable with a little planning! Hope that helps!
@AdventuresofAplusK Yes, saw it. Very precious information in there. Thank you! 🤗
you got a keeper Adam.
You can say that again!
Merry Christmas ⛄🎁🎁🎁⛄⛄⛄🎁⛄⛄⛄⛄⛄⛄🎁🎁🎁⛄⛄
Thank you for bringing this beautiful area of the world to us! I spy a little token of home (pizza ziploc) 😂.
haha yep - the ziploc made it all the way from HEB in Texas
Good job powering through, Katherine! Excellent footage! Were you using a fluid head tripod? Some of those pan shots were so smooth but in real time that it seems like you must have. If not, you're much more stable when panning than we are! 👏
Spectacular views! Sorry to hear about the doctor visit, but definitely warranted. Curious to know how you guys do with altitude sickness? I’ve found my reaction to it has varied from location to location - sometimes feeling like I have a bad head cold and other times experiencing just a little dizziness. Any tips on acclimating, if it’s even an issue for you?
Loved this one! Who makes your sun shirts?
Thanks! Our sun shirts are made by Patagonia. You can see all of our gear here: adventuresofaplusk.com/gear/
Heart broken for your travels. But I love that you're fine ❤
Luckily it didn't take away too much!
Hello, Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving!
You too!
It was pretty scary and thankfully it cleared up fast
@@AdventuresofAplusK Yes, it is a scary infection. If left untreated it can cause several deadly conditions. Same here ---the second anti-biotic did the job. Stay safe.
nice video. I hiked this route back in 2009. im curious about the river crossings. Were there any difficulties etc.??
We didn't notice any difficult river crossings when we visited. There was usually a bridge or at least a log bridge.
how do you prepare for the high altitude?
We planned a few days to take it easy in Cusco. In Cusco we just walked around a lot. Also, drinking coca leaf tea helps. You should be adjusted and good to go after a few days
Using ski poles for trekking takes about 40% of the load and effort off your feet/legs/calves and thighs.
Ah that sounds familiar! Thanks for sharing that!
Anoxia is the best buzz. Lol
😂
What month did you go?
Filming dates are in the description 😊
The intended trek does finish in Machu Pichu, correct ?
Yes you can hike up to Machu Picchu at the end. There is an AllTrails link in the description if you want to see the entire route
Stay tuned for upcoming videos 😃
Hi
Eating pitahaya is quite risky to eat specially if you don’t have a restroom near you 😅
We've eaten dragon fruit many times with no issues. Is it common for it to cause problems?
