    Full size HDMI... 300g weight... SDI ports... Black Magic Codecs.... this camera is the best thing that has happened in quite a while... i know on TH-cam everyone is on a Sony trip for some reason... but a hand full of BM Micro Studio and you can produce pretty much any show! This is absolutely a game changer!! Especially at a price point of around 1000€

    BMD does a lot of things right. The connection options on this thing are what everyone should expect from a modern camera. A proper DC power input, SDI, and FULL-SIZED HDMI (mocking you here, Canon) are nice to see. I think the big miss here is the lack of genlock. This thing would be great for a 3-D setup, but that's a no-go without genlock.

    • @kersplody7435

    Thank you very much for that great first deep dive!
    My biggest issue is the lack of the crop sensor mode (1080 workflow) that would DOUBLE the MFT focal length without any drawback!! I really hope Blackmagic listens and makes it available for the micro studio G2 and the studio G2 as well, that really lack it A LOT!
    To all you out there: let’s make some noise!!!

    • @neonvoid
      @neonvoid 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      how do you mean lack of crop sensor mode? you want a 1:1 readout instead of using the full sensor width?

    • @Matija___
      @Matija___ 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@neonvoid the URSA and the BMPCC have the crop sensor mode that is missing on the Studio and Micro Studio cameras. It enables the camera to read only the middle part of the sensor, effectively doubling the focal length. In a typical live stream the output of the live stream is 1080p anyway (Atem Minis and constellation HD do not even have the ability to go beyond 1080, as many other mixers as well). The BMD "Studio" cameras can only read the full sensor and then convert the signal from 4k to 1080 at the moment. In crop sensor/"window mode"(called in the URSA menu) the middle part of the sensor (1080 width) gets read out and that is directly the output signal. This may not be a perfectly accurate technical description of what is happening, but it is in principle exactly that. BMD "Studio" cameras are mainly used for their output signal to the video mixer, it seems therefore totally strange that those BMD "Studio" cameras miss that ability the pockets and the URSA have. Also, and that is in many cases the deal breaker for not having MFT mount cameras, there are not many if any good and more or less affordable MFT tele zoom lenses under F4. And yes, they are not parafocal anyway but in many cases zooming while being live is not crucial. It is fare more important to have a beautiful picture. Sorry for the long explanation but I wanted to have a complete answer. I would really like Blackmagic to make a software update to fix this issue, I am sure that would make a big difference for many and it is "just" a little software option. Please Blackmagic, I am begging you! Hope that somebody from Blackmagic is reading this 🤞🤞🤞

    • @Matija___
      @Matija___ 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@neonvoid in short, yes! 😁

    • @Matija___
      @Matija___ 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The long version.. since Blackmagic already has the functionality to crop the sensor for a 1080 output on the URSA and BMPCC cameras, I guess it would not be a big thing to implement it on the studio cameras. The ATEM Minis and the Constellation HD series of BMD video mixers have 1080 as a maximum input and output anyway. In the 1080 workflow the cheaper mixers and the cheaper BMD Studio cameras are therefore a very good match. Next step in quality would be the URSAs and maybe the Production Studio or Broadcast Studio mixers if you want to stay all in BMD - but we are talking about MUCH more money. As a reminder - we are also talking about the "Micro STUDIO" and also the normal "STUDIO" cameras that do not have the sensor crop functionality, even though they are mainly used for their output signal in the STUDIO. There would be no real drawback to "reduce" the capability of the BDM Studio cameras with the sensor crop ("Window Crop") mode where the camera is outputting the middle of the sensor (1080 width) instead of rendering down the full 4K sensor to 1080 exept the benefits. Anyway the sensors of those cameras are very nice even for TV broadcasting! The main issue with those systems are the available lenses - there are no good options for tele zoom lenses under F4 for MFT mounts. The "trick" of the sensor mode doubles the "range"/focal lenght and maximizes the ability of the lenses. So please Blackmagic consider to implement the sensor crop mode of all of the Studio cameras, PLEASE!!

    • @neonvoid
      @neonvoid 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Matija___ i had a bmcc6k full frame for a short time, and i had the exact opposite problem, it can do only 1:1 crops, the HD crop on the 6K sensor is basically full tunnel vision - it CANNOT do full sensor width in 16:9 at all, only on obscure ratios (17:9 is the closest) - but you can't avoid black bars, since the HDMI output is 1080p60 ONLY. its ridiculous.

    Hopefully BM has fastened the USB-C port better than they did with the Pocket 4K. Mine was just lying in its bag and the port fell into the camera. Now I cannot use my T5 drives anymore, so I bought a cFAST card. I am just using it for personal productions at this point, so will do fine. Because firmware upgrades can only be done via the same port, I am now stuck with cDNG and no BRAW or gyro stabilization. Which I also can live with. I think real RAW is the best. So glad it fell into the house with my most favorite firmware installed. :) A repair done by BM that costs about $600 is out of the question for me at this point in time... They would swap the motherboard for a new one, removing the possibility of real cDNG RAW recording (only possible with the first version of the camera), which is the main reason I got the cam in the first place. BRAW is good, but not *as* good quality-wise. So, no. I will stay stuck with this good configuration.

    re the lack of bluetooth - I've found in studio environments, which this camera is for, with other things sharing the spectrum, and inconvenient things like walls and even metal house framing causes range issues and even actual interference.
    Not trying to justify BM's omission of it, and I'm a bit cranky about no alternative being included (as well as a lack of Ethernet and internal recording, but also understandable for what it is - a cheap, usable and 'it just works' studio bound broadcast camera.
    If they make a cine version of it I hope it will include all those things, as well as better power options. I appreciate third party manufacturers like 8Sin and Smallrig will descend on this (or a hypothetical cine version) with all the cages and adaptors you could ever want, but it's always nice to have it right straight out of the box.

    The lack of continuous AF on BM cams really limits the usefulness of this system. Since BM doesn't have continuous AF, you'll need to add LIDAR controlling a focus motor, which means you can't use the focus motor for zoom, which means if you also want zoom, you'll need a power zoom lens compatible with this setup. Sony makes great PZ lenses, but it's unclear to what extent this whole system is compatible with the Sony ecosystem, it seems mostly designed for BM. As such, you're limited to only a few native MFT PZ lens options. Most are cheaper, not the greatest image quality. Panasonic makes several MFT PZ lenses that are maybe acceptable (???) depending on your standards. Also, there are no MFT PZ lenses with constant aperture, meaning brightness will change throughout the zoom range. And none very fast (especially considering MFT sensor). He mentions the Olympus ED 12-100 constant f4, but that is NOT a Power Zoom lens, so you're back at square one, using the focus motor for zoom, and missing out on focus....which wouldn't be a problem with literally ANY other camera system that had either C-AF or better Power Zoom lens choices.
    If it was possible to use this whole Middle Things / DJI gimbal PTZ setup with Sony cameras, (or any camera system that supports C-AF), it'd be much better! Not only does Sony make some great PZ lenses, they also have AMAZING C-AF, meaning you wouldn't necessarily even need PZ lenses because you could use the native C-AF for focus, which would free up the focus motor to be used for Zoom on ANY Sony lens. No need for a finicky lidar setup, and you have WAY more and WAY better lens choices. Perhaps better, you'd have the ability to use FASTER lenses, with constant aperture, on larger sensors, up to full frame, meaning faster speeds than an equivalent MFT value (about 2 stops more DOF). Not to mention some of the cool Sony features like clear image zoom, which gives you 1.5-2x the zoom range (with some caveats, look it up).
    In short, I love this system, and everything Middle Things is doing here, but it's really too bad it seems (???) to be limited mainly to BM, which means no C-AF without clunky LIDAR, limited PZ lenses of pretty low quality, no PZ options with constant aperture, and if you choose non-PZ lenses you either give up focus, or zoom.
    PS: The Canon power zoom adapter won't work with this system, so EF lenses are out. And the new Canon 24-105 f2.8 constant PZ lens is for RF mount, so no go there either. Really, AFAIK, if you want the full PTZ with C-AF, you're stuck with pretty limited MFT choices and nothing with constant aperture.

    Great review and really good seeing your control units. Does your PTZ control box work over public internet or is it only for hardwired setups ?

    Funny, I was just thinking about this yesterday so great timing! What is the difference in latency between HDMI and 12G SDI? I have wanted a digital crop punch in on the ATEM for quite some time for 1080 punch ins on the 4k sensor. Thank you for all you do.

    Love the from factor, would have been a perfect size for more content creators (I'm more in that market than pro users but love BM product) with a bluetooth/wifi and prores addition it could have closed a huge gap and challenged sony as the defacto content dslr.

    No Bluetooth, what about time code? My biggest issue would be low light. The older model was horrible. Im hoping to see some real world low light performance. I akso wish it had built in SRT or NDI seing that it supports an ethernet port via usb. Im excited. Going to give BMD another try now.
