  • This is an informal, by no means a scientific comparison of the GH5 & the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K in connection with a Set of ZEISS ZE Distagon Primes.
    On the BMPCC4K I recorded to SSD Disk in Apple ProRes HQ, UHD.
    And on the GH5 in UHD as well, as MOV Files 400mbps in 10Bit.
    Lit by Sunlight and a SWIT BiColor Light Panel in 45 degree angle.
    Grading was done in DaVinci Resolve V15.

    Nice test. I bought GH5 two years ago and i loved it. I made feature documentaries with it and now i switched to Pocket 4k. Its great camera. It has way better image, but i am a little bit slower with it.

    • @taikang
      @taikang  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same for us. Our studio uses the GH5 as work horse since 2 years. But we do rent for specific jobs now, also the BMPCC4K (specially when low light strength is needed). Think of adding it also into the fleet of our studio gear. Amazing piece of gear. But the low price is slightly fooling: Since the battery life suck, you need some serious cage/rails set up and adjust some V-Lock Batteries. It's still an insanely cheap set up.

    • @svetvhledacku
      @svetvhledacku 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@taikang I know and you are right. I bought a lot of acessories from smallrig and Tilta. I use Tilta plate with F970 batteries and it works great. Way batter than Canon LP6. Samsung T5 SSD is great and cheap also.

    • @roblivings7447
      @roblivings7447 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@taikang I highly recommend the juicebox battery (around $120 for the kit). Sits right on top of the camera (or mounts to side of cage), and gives you 3 hours of recording time. Smaller than V-mount, so if you have 2, you can just switch out as you need. But one should last all day if you're nice about turning your camera off.
      That said, I prefer the GH5. Panasonic have always been better about batteries than Canon, Sony, Blackmagic.

    • @taikang
      @taikang  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ray Loot thanx. Yes, the BMPCC4K is an amazing film camera. It really depends what you need it for: they both have their up and down sides. If you also shoot stills it’s a no brainier:GH5. Also if you do lots of handhold work and need an IS. For film shooting in a controlled environment, the BMPCC4K has the edge. Specially in terms of skin colours and dynamic range. But both cameras are beasts,
      Specially, considering their low prices.

  • @MartinAaberge
    @MartinAaberge 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    WOW!!! I had to watch this twice. The first time I was just sitting there in awe of all the amazing footage. Then I had to go back and check what was filmed with what. How do you find the RAW vs VLOG to work with? I'm considering buying one of these two cameras.

    • @taikang
      @taikang  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your kind words!!
      Both cameras are a pleasure to grade. VLog and BRaw reacts differently, but for both, you get the feeling for how to work with each one pretty fast.
      They are both great cameras, we are using both in the studio. It really depends on the project, but still if I had to choose only one of the two, I still stick with GH5, the better allrounder.

  • @BloodSugarS3XMajik

    i really enjoyed this. This really gave me a new found faith in the GH5. In the end it's really about the camera operator's ability in camera and in post. I do however feel like the GH5 won this battle. The thing I really like about GH5 is that it's loaded with features, it's beautiful, IBIS, histograms, profiles, codecs, frame rates etc. As for the Blackmagic - the dynamic range and the filmic (cinematic) feel to the image is just awesome, the colors are beautiful. @frEeTEknoPaRTy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hello Sascha! Thank you a lot for your work and videos. I have a question. I generally prefer the bmpcc 4k because the colours seem more natural than the gh5, especially the sky on the gh5 gets really unnatural, do you know why it is like this and do you think with a different colour grading process a result more close to the bmpcc could be achieved? In this really moment I can't choose between those 2 cameras, I would like the gh5 because it seems a bit more easy to use, but I really prefer the colours of the bmpcc 4k!

    • @taikang
      @taikang  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Hermes, I have to keep it short, but let me try to cover it all: the Skype difference has no importance: in this test I was solely focusing on matching skin tones, since I had to use both side by side and needed to be sure of that. Skin tones are the most difficult to fully match, and the most important.
      The Blues of the GH5 are pristine and nothing is wrong with them.
      In terms of handling the BMPCC4K ist a lot easier: simple and clear menu with a lot less functions than the GH5.
      It really depends, what your needs are. None of them is better nor worse. It’s all up to what you use it for: do you need more light sensitivity? An IBIS to be able to use Primes handhold? Do you also want to shoot stills or only film? Do you need to be able to have a compact set up or you don’t mind a bulky rig? Do you the set up to be water resistant? All those (and some more) question, when answered will indicate which one you need.
      In terms of looks: both are great.
      Keep in mind: when shooting log, for either one, you need to do some serious CC and Grading.

    • @taikang
      @taikang  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, if it is a light amount of noise, that is perfectly normal. LOG in general is more noisy Profile. Just look at S-LOG3...looks like peaking into an anthill. That is why V-Log should be only used if the rushes enter a pro post pipeline after the shooting: Part of the grading is De-Noising. The internal Denoiser of DaVinci does a pretty decent job. For ISO400 noise more than enough (spatial DeNoise will do, no need even for temporary). In case, of harsher noise ISO1600 and above, you need a bigger gun: NEAT Video's DeNoiser.

      Sascha Engel What are the top Luts that you would keep on your Atomos? I always run the image “clean” and work with luts in adobe Having the option to have luts on the Atomos is nice. If you use luts on a monitor, do you burn them in while filming or do you use only as a reference?

    • @taikang
      @taikang  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaelfrisch118 Never burn them in!!! That defies the whole purpose of shooting LOG in the first place. Personally, I always put on a REC 709 LUT to see the LOG in a clean way. If I know already in advance, a certain look/grading will be applied, because it was decided on the forehand, I create this look as monitor LUT and load it as reference, so it helps me to light the scene optimal for the look the director/client chose. But also in this case: Only as reference, never burned in!

    • @taikang
      @taikang  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Frisch It actually ain’t a stupid question. Let’s say, for example, you are shooting some Vlog or content that is created with great time pressure and there is only enough time for editing, sound and export, but you do want a certain look, that exceeds the standard picture profiles, creating a look in DVR, making it a LUT and placing it on your Atomos can be a real life safer. Film making is like life: there is not one right way, but only the right way for the given situation. :-)

      Sascha Engel how’d you convert it to EF mount? They are Zeiss ZE? I thought you’re using the old contax zeiss.

      Frankman exactly my thoughts: both are beasts, each one shines in a different area and has its place. Really depends on the job, and what it needs most.
