    So you didnt shoot and compare RAW because in your words "It wouldn't be a fair comparison." Are you kidding? Isnt that the point of a comparison? To compare each cameras strengths, especially those strengths that one has well above the other.
    You compared the GH5s photography over the BMPCC4K, surely that is not a fair comparison too since the GH5s is primarily a stills camera???
    No consistency and your shot comparisons are all over the place with framing and white balance.

    • @Ryan-Payne
      @Ryan-Payne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      He mentions that the black magic is a clear winner if you want a raw workflow. It's automatically a better image that the GH5s can't achieve, but comes with workflow and hard drive space limitations.
      As for the photo capabilities he mentions those prior to the comparison as an additional thing to consider then goes on to compare the video aspect of the cameras.
      To me the pocket 4k image is clearly better but the GH5s' functionality wins me over for being a camera that I'd own and use for any application. I'd rather rent something for short films.

      @@Ryan-Payne He doesn't mention that the other one is a cinema camera and the other one is for everything else. I've seen comparisons of iPhone vs RED Epic and they didn't say "iPhone is clearly better because I can call with it". or "it's not fair to compare the image quality of those because I can't attach cinema lenses to iPhone".

    I like your videos, man. However, I don't think it's a good comparison since you are exercising selective bias: you can't pick and choose which features you want to ignore like RAW. You need to test each camera's absolute strengths and weaknesses. Not cripple one camera by disregarding a feature like that. Peace!

      Hi Miguel! Thank you 🙏 I really appreciate your knowable comment and you are right. Raw is superior and I say it at least twice in the video. However the headache in post is as of right now a no go for me. This might change with braw. And I still believe that the prores files are far better then the Panasonic files. Have a great day!

      I second your thoughts. While I respect his critiques on his subject matters, I’m highly disappointed by the bias judgement he’s particularly placed on the BMPCC4K. I own both cameras and can speak retrospectively on both without being selective as he’s done in this case.
      However his summaries are with faults of a high condemnation with steers more to giving the Gh5S the greater of esteem.
      Without placing them in the same situations during comparisons and similar control variants, then sadly the ideation to submit true life conclusions is bereft with errors.

    • @ArberBaqaj
      @ArberBaqaj  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IsaiahMcAye Thanx for your great comment. I respect your opinion and you seem to be very well red. To be honest I do not have a biast towards none of the cameras. I just talk about the things that I see and some things are more important to me than others. I made this review with my self in mind and my type of shooting. For me at the moment raw is not important because time is money and post would take at least double the time for me. Also the ergonomics to me matter a lot and there the Pocket Camera is great to hold in the hand but a pain to shoot with lacking both a flippable screen and a evf. I really like both Blackmagic and Panasonic because of they do not cripple their products and give us what we want. So no bias here. On the contrary the GH5s was. slightly slightly better in iso 3200 and 6400 but it was so little so I decided not to mention it and because it can vary depending on how accurate you nail your exposure. As I say. I like both of them and as I siad, really appreciate your feedback. Have a great day my friend!

      @@ArberBaqaj Hi Arber! Great to hear back from you. I think the crux of the matter isn't your personal taste (everybody has different tastes and preferences and that's perfectly fine), but I think it's that viewers click on your video because of its title "Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K vs Panasonic GH5s - lowlight, sharpness and color review and test" with the assumption that there will be a unbiased comparison using the scientific method (i.e. independent/dependent variables & controls). However, in a controlled environment (like I said before), you can't selectively choose NOT to include RAW (despite your disposition towards ProRes). Otherwise, it's not exactly a good comparison. The control of the experiment should be the subject you are filming, the independent variables should be VLOG versus RAW, and the dependent variable should be image quality.
      It's because of this skewed "comparison" that viewers are questioning the test's credibility. Again, this is irrespective of your own personal tastes and preferences (i.e. ProRes).
      Anyway, those are my two cents about why it seems many have a bone to pick with this video. Hope it helps. Have an A1 day!

    you are really missing the point of a Cinema Camera, and trying to set a playing field that is favorable to one camera. No doubt if you want to shoot DSLR like video with auto focus and 8 bit out of the camera footage it might be fair. But this is hardly a real comparison

      Heartless depends on how one defines a “real cinema camera,” to me the blackmagic is as real as a cinema camera gets at that price point and dslr video doesn’t require auto focus, really unless you’re doing a vlog you shouldn’t be using autofocus anyway.

    I find the BMPCC4K colours and tones far more pleasing. I do find it extremely unforgiving and best suited to controlled environments, especially in ProRes. However in RAW, while it's more work later (for small/unimportant projects I even just do a basic re-encode to a smaller format), it really isn't that much harder to work with once you have a decent workflow down as generally you can copy the RAW grades to other clips as the correction before coloring and I find it to be far more forgiving.
    The only facet I consider the GH5 to be superior is the quick turnaround and more manageable files/sizes. I shoot with both on a team and without the budget for 10's of hard drives a month I can't keep raw files, so the extra step of re-encoding for archive for me as opposed to just archiving the off camera GH5 filesas is can be a slight hindrance at times.

    • @ArberBaqaj
      @ArberBaqaj  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are good but so are the Kinefinity files. They are very nice. Raw workflow as of right now is harder for me because I’m a better fcpx user then Davinci and that slows me down a lot. The file sizes also are huge. Both those cameras are great and the gh5 is still the camera I use the most, thanx for a great comment!

    the real difference with RAW video will be in post when you have to change white balance (shooting under mixed lighting)............if you need raw, buy blackmagic..........if not (shooting 10bit) get the gh5/gh5s (or wait forever like me for the mythical unicorn that is the sony a7siii)...........Blackmagic Raw video is also now supported in avid, premier pro and davinci of-course........so the only reason not to shoot braw is if you edit in final cut

    Thank you Amber for posting this informative nice video. Although your are saying the the low light performance is similar on both cameras, the performance of the Black Magic PC4k looks much better at higher iso where the details on the wall in your clip are preserved. On GH5s the wall details look clipped/overexposed. What do you think?

    I'm so stuck between choosing between the two. I have read for 2 weeks now about both cameras and still trying to determine which would be best. For TH-cam and interviews it's best to have an autofocus when you're a one man team, right? But as photographer I also love to grade colors, so RAW is also very appealing. It's a hard duel for me!

    Here my personal experience on a videoproject. I can confirm that ProRes Slowmo looks like shit. Not only is it too soft, it is also noisey. Additionally we shot 250 Gig and had to use 8 batteries, when filming reactions for an event that lasted 4 hrs.
    I was glad to see that that this was the first review I found to mention that.
    I'd love to even see a comparison with an old Sony Alpha Mark II - ProRes vs. AVC-HD in 120.
    If you are used to Raw workflows, you will not care about planning a shot, batteries, terrabytes of Data and hours of color grading or denoising. Don't expect to get movie quality for free.Just be aware what price you pay as a trade off, not moneywise but in usability and functionality.
    I am looking forward to all the shortfilms coming soon. The comment section shows that there is a lot of folks interested in doing so.
    Cheers,

If they were the same sensor wouldn't they share native ISOs? I don't think either of these cameras excels at photography. When you're shooting RAW the color science is much less important. Blackmagic DEFINITELY doesn't design their own sensors. All their sensors are off the shelf (and so are Panasonics for what it's worth: designing sensors is expensive!).
      Native iso isn't an inherent property of the sensor, it's the exposure curve that the manufacturer deems to have the best compromise between noise and dynamic range over and under middle grey. It's a manufacturer's recommendation, nothing else.

      Plus the Gh5S has less pixels than the Gh5, only slightly, on the same size sensor. Still enough pixels for 4k, but not a bunch more like you would want for photography specifically. Less pixels on the same size sensor means that each pixel is bigger and gather more light which is better for low light and video in general. This is called the pixel pitch and the pixel density. You can find websites comparing different sensors against each other and their respective pixel pitch.

As I consider buying one of these cams, the sharpness of the GH5s is actually a big downside, for one very important reason... you can't turn OFF the sharpening effect the camera is applying. You can turn DOWN sharpening, but CANNOT turn it OFF. The BMPCC4K does not apply sharpening in-camera (unless you want it to). That gives you a more flexible file. I DO love sharp 4K video... but it looks like video, especially on skin. For cinematic applications, I would NOT want sharpening, and unfortunately that's just not an option on the GH5s. But it does have so many other things going for it...

    What did I just watch? How's it fair to compare photographic features but not different codecs on video? Other one is still camera and the other is video camera. It's like comparing a van to hatchback and say "hatchback is better because it has 5 seats. It's unfair to compare the amount of stuff I can fit in the compartment because other one is a van."
    There's nothing subjective to what comes to video quality. 12bit RAW vs 10bit ALL-I the difference is night and day.

    • @eliteextremophile8895
      @eliteextremophile8895 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's one clear and simple difference in these cameras. Other one is good all-around camera and the other one is a cinema camera. If you have the money for ARRI and you're going to vlog and photograph, maybe take your money to Leica or Hasselblad.

    Thanks for the comparison Arber! You have basically confirmed my belief that both cameras obviously produce a lovely image when a skilled cameraman uses either tool! I would guess that there would be more variation in image quality in regards to quality of the lenses used, meaning that if one already owned the GH5s and felt like upgrading to squeeze out that little extra subjective image quality, it would probably be just as viable buying the next level of lenses rather than buying the BMP4K. I feel that these cameras are in the same league so the differentiating factors will be how you light, how you lens each camera and finally how good your grading skills with your chosen software are. Also, as Atomos have shown that Apple ProRes Raw can work over HDMI 2 with the Nikon Z6, I would be surprised if they did not team up with Panasonic this year to give us that upgrade to the GH5 and GH5s, then the difference in image quality would be even smaller!🙏🏾

    I came for exactly one info: which cam has less noise and sustains more detail at 3200 iso. I am doing concerts and live performance. Yet, exactly that part of the clip BMPCC ISO-3200 is out of focus.... that´s bitter. I normally record with Canon 5D MK III and Canon 5D MK IV and since last year with the Sony A7 R II but all of this FF-Sensors in combination with fast lens have a problem DoF is very shallow and need constant operation. While the AF in the 5D MK IV is simply brilliant, the 5D MK III AF has it´s limites when live recording and the AF of the A7 RII is simply terribly.

    In my opinion, if you want cinema/film like footage you don't really want an overly sharp image anyway. The best results I've seen with the bmpcc4k were from people using softer vintage glass. If you want a really highly sharp/clear image for a documentary (similar to discovery channel/david Attenborough type stuff) that's when you should start to care about sharpness.

      Regarding battery, $20 12V NP-F battery plate + 2 x 7900mAh NP-F (7.2V is important!) batteries (~$40) and I have enough to go all day. Small enough to mount on top or on a cage, or onto my gimbal. 500GB SSD + reader can be had for around $120, so add around $200 for 500GB of storage and all day battery. Considering SD cards fast enough for high bitrates on GH5/S would get up that high for a 256GB with no extra battery, I'm happy.
      Is it as portable and "easy" as the GH5/S? No. Are the files insurmountably more flexible with nicer skin tones and colours? Yes. I do like the GH5 and by itself of course it's the more complete solution, but it's BMPCC4K all day for me.

      Dynamic range doesn't matter at all unless you have a high-contrast scene. In other words, it only matters when it's a problem. More dynamic range isn't always useful, especially if it comes at an expense. Shooting log/flat profiles with 8-bit output files is a great way to ruin your colors in your midtones, for example, but if that 1/2 stop of DR is all that matters even if the colors get wrecked...go for it.
